Maybe not, though I'd say the Kiwi guys are even more shameless. Will never forget the time we played them over there in Season 4 (and lost 3-0: the game where Griffo and Milligan didn't get sent off) and Ngata or Dewhurst or one of those clowns cried out, "Oh, Karl Dodd, giving me heart flutters with that back-pass there!" I mean, f*ck me dead, how obvious can you get?

The Newcastle Jets are traveling with a 16-man squad to Wellington for Sunday’s Round 18 clash at Westpac Stadium, which includes new signing Zenon Caravella.

Caravella comes into the squad for the suspended Ruben Zadkovich, while Taylor Regan and Adam Taggart are also in the traveling squad.

Ben Kennedy has been rested (knee) this weekend, with young keeper Jack Duncan making the trip across the Tasman, while Josh Mitchell is also omitted due to a fifth yellow card.

Newcastle Jets squad: 2. Scott Neville, 3. Zenon Caravella, 7. James Brown, 9. Emile Heskey, 11. Connor Chapman, 12. Josh Brillante, 13. Sam Gallaway, 14. Taylor Regan, 15. Craig Goodwin, 16. Jobe Wheelhouse, 17. James Virgili, 20. Mark Birighitti (gk), 22. Adam Taggart, 23. Ryan Griffiths, 26. Andrew Hoole, 30. Jack Duncan (gk).

Copy and paste from the jerks site.

Isn't it one good player and one shit player different to the side that was the first to get anything at Gypoville last week? Mitchell out + Regan in = win. RubeZ out + Jobe in = almost neutral?

In his 10 or so minutes on the park, Caravella managed to do something that no one bar Heskey and Ribeiro have been able to do all season... pass IN FRONT of the players run. So many times seeing us pass to a winger or overlapping fullback and they have to check their run so they don't miss the ball.

That was some pretty painful watching. Good thing I still have whiskey left over from yesterday.

Why the hell did Goodwin come off. Better having him and Virgilli running amok on the wings. The proper wings, not this swapping over shit. Not only that when Galloway got sent off they lost a fill in at left back. Carravella should have come on firstly for Brown. The Taggart for the last change. Frustrating game to watch. We should have gone for the win.

One can only hope that our other midfielders don't indoctrinate Caravella into the Newy way ie. try to do just enough to win your next contract and no more. I hate how this team can never take an opportunity to be anything more than mediocre. Feel for the guys that put in cause we were just pedestrian in midfield until Brown came off and Caravella came on. Too late by then.

I've always been behind GVE and what he is trying to achieve, but it is not getting us anywhere. I do think we need to bring in someone out of left field to change the culture and mindset of this club, even somebody like Miron or similar "continental style" coach.

We play out too slow, our first touch is poor and we don't pass in front of the receiver as somebody else said earlier. Our goals are scrappy and I don't think we have totally dominated a side all season, let alone given them a towelling. It is always get in front and hold onto it.

Alot of the cattle is there (still need a genuine playmaker), but the utilisation is all wrong.

My thoughts.

Neville is more a liability than help on the field

Brown stifles any attacking Play by getting in the way, holding the ball far too long and/or running backwards with it.

We seem afraid to attack the ball or put our body on the line.

Birraz is awesome

We missed Zad

Despite the love I showed him this week, Jobe didn't do himself any favours.

Pretty well spot on.
Just to elaborate on Zad, he has become the heart and drive of this team. Without him we just look pedestrian....plain and simple.

Next week I would put Brillante in for the suspended Gallaway at LB, bring back Hoole to RB and start with Caravella partnering Rubes in the middle.

Both teams look like top 6 when you consider that top 6 includes a team from the bottom half of the table. Top 6 finals is a joke! Cream (sadly the scum... for far too many years, at least pre-finals football, :lulz:) rises to the top... and then under that, you just have the team that has the most fibre in its diet so the floating turds make up the numbers.

Well that was a hard game to watch. I for the life of me couldn't understand why GVE persisted in this match with having the defence press high when Wellington are known for throwing the long ball in behind the defence, add in a few fast players on their side and it was inviting trouble.

I feel sorry for Brown, I rate him as a player, but he needed time in the youth when he was back from injury to find his feet. He has been thrown to the wolves and is struggling and it is showing. Why Ribeiro or Bridgey aren't given a go is beyond me. Clearly Brown isn't working at the moment.

Zads was missed big time in the midfield, but Caravelo looks like he will be a good pick up in the middle of the park. He needs to start next week.

And I think that is the last time we will see either Regan or the Physio after GVE's dummy spit. Both will be banished from the squad and are probably being told to swim home.

The Regan incident does reflect poorly on GVE. Huge lack of communication between GVE/Deans/Physio.

So Neville is still getting game time even though he can't cross or defend, Brown does one great thing in 18 rounds and is still getting more game time than Bridges who for all his faults can still take it to the corner better than anyone in the team, Regan fights his way in to the Squad and because GVE can't understand a physio's explanations ofRegans injury pulls him out of the game and now because he blew his stack is likely to be back in the Youth team hanging out with Ribero for the rest of the season.
A draw in the land of arse kicking's may be better than the usual but we are still seeing shit players choosen ahead of players who have a greater potential of creating an impact.

GVE is still shit, no matter how good Heskey is making him look.

How does it reflect poorly on GVE? Regan was down injured for over a minute. There was a couple of minutes left in the game, GVE was about to make a sub. What was wrong with subbing him off?

I like Regan a lot and thought he had a pretty good game but I the outburst at being substituted was absolute shit. Surely he has to realise how petty it was to lose it when there was only a couple of minutes left in the game. A bad look for the team, this attitude might explain why he has seen less game time this season. Would fully back GVE if he were to drop him for next week.

Why Regan upset?

Because we had no defenders on the bench and had to drop Heskey to centre back. At 1-1 in stoppage time in a place we never pick up points, the last thing you would want to be doing is pulling the defence apart for no reason and stiking a striker in CB.

I can see your point, but was that really why Regan was upset? (I personally didn't see there being a problem with the move btw)

Regardless of what he was upset about, there was no need for that kind of carrying on. Very unprofessional behaviour, particularly for a player who has struggled to get game time this season.

It was a tactically devoid decision from GVE. Pretty much summed up our night, tactically devoid.

The only benefit of the doubt I will give GVE is that communication with the Physio was poor, but you would want to be sure of whats going on before making a call like that to replace a CB with a striker.

Regan showed how much he wanted to win, and probably more to the point how frustrated they are getting with the coaching.

Thought it was a terrible performance and very hard to watch. Once again no cohesion and nothing happening when we had possession. The players seemed unable to find space. Very rudderless and uninspiring against a shite opponent. Agree that Caravella showed more in his cameo than the others did in 80 minutes. egghead looks like such a sook when he is under pressure - interesting to see what happens to Regan after the spit- history would say he is gone. regarding Bridges and his non appearances, Gaz believes the recent feature story on Bridges in the Herald was set up by Bridges. it wasn't of course, but the insecurity and paranoia of Gaz saw I t differently. His prickly relationship with the local media didn't help. Don't know how the players can tolerate this goose.

He has done all these things in the past 2 years. He is quality. He is a good leader and mentor for the younger players. That's why he should be in the starting XI along with Heskey. If given some time to gel, a Heskey Bridges combination might well be what we need. But the illustrious Van God has chosen not to give that reasonable assumption an opportunity to show itself. :lulz:

in bridges cameo v brisbane, he touched the ball 6 times. 5 of those times went to the opposition, the other time it got passed to him and he had barely taken one touch and smith slid through the back of his legs and we got a freekick. so in terms of pass completion rate, or possession-retention rate, bridges is one of the worst players in the league. he looks lively, he's cheered on by a large segment of an idiotic audience, but he does sfa yet people cannot see it somehow.

lol that one went across the bow, and I take warning and duck my head!! lol. I don't keep such detailed statistics. How did the other 13 go against Brisbane? And how did Taggart go against Wellington when brought on to replace a defender at 90 minutes?

I simply make the point that Bridges is thought to be a class player by many apart from me. Its a bit harsh to condemn the man on one brief appearance.

I don't claim to be a football football genius, I just base my argument on what he does when he's on the park, which in my view is almost always good. Give him a start and see how he goes as a playmaker for Heskey and co.

i have a personal gripe against bridges, which i've gone into many times since he was "6-8 weeks away". i know those detailed stats about the brisbane game because i found it ridiculous the amount of cheering he got, so figured i'd take count myself while at the game. it was <20mins so was easy to keep track of, i didn't do it for the other players though (but if they were keeping possession 1/6 times too, i'd be onto them. in fact, i believe i keyboard-warrior on virgilli about this regularly). and i haven't had the chance to watch wellington yet, and wouldn't be compelled to do the stats on taggz as personally i don't have an agenda against him. i'd imagine he got less touches on the ball for that amount of time on the park, though. and if he got similar amount of touches, i'd say he was in a lot more ball-receiving opportunities than bridges in his 15mins cameo v brisbane - so maybe he'd be more useful. but i can't fully say.

the thing about bridges is all of his appearances are similar to the brisbane one, just no one notices it. i've posted the stats many times about how many times he gives the ball away. he rarely keeps possession, and rarely makes any opportunities, in his sub appearances. i have no idea how this could possibly warrant a start. if i were the coach i'd be looking to keep a future prospect, young player a go rather than bridges. especially if said young prospect is going to be as useless to that current game as bridges would be. at least we'd be looking towards the future. i'd rather piss off bridges, bound for retirement, for giving him no game time than pissing off taggart/cooper/etc, who actually have a future on the park.

let me put it this way - apart from the timewasting in december 2011 that bridges did @ suncorp, does anyone remember a thing he's done on the park? the only thing that comes to mind is he come on as a sub at home in one random game last season and did two noteworthy things - an outside of foot flick on pass (after which he did a spin on the spot), and an audacious outside of foot long through ball from within our own half to a running-on striker - both of which landed at the oppositions feet.

we are all idiots, but i mainly meant the first one.

:lulz:

in bridges cameo v brisbane, he touched the ball 6 times. 5 of those times went to the opposition, the other time it got passed to him and he had barely taken one touch and smith slid through the back of his legs and we got a freekick. so in terms of pass completion rate, or possession-retention rate, bridges is one of the worst players in the league. he looks lively, he's cheered on by a large segment of an idiotic audience, but he does sfa yet people cannot see it somehow.

boom, headshot

What you fail to point out in all of that is that all of the subs in that game were ineffective and honkingly bad as they were played out of position.

Simply shuffling the team a little when the subs came on would have made everyone look better. As it was Taggart was on the Left, Bridges up front with Griff in behind, Surely if they had pushed Griff to the wing, Bridges takes up Browns position and Taggart put into CF, everyone plays better, but no everyone came on out of position and it showed in the way the team finished.

So the point is, don't judge a player being played out of position when those around them are also out of position.

I don't want to get into a slanging match, but in answer to making opportunities, in his cameo appearances this season at home, two deft moves that I do recall was a pass from 10 yards in the opposition half on the right, he gave a first time, ball to the left winger, switching play and creating an attack which ultimately failed due to others. On another occasion, he split the defence with a beautifully weighted ball on the deck to a striker who was within inches of beating the advancing keeper. Not bad for a player who gets so little game time.

As others have said above, playing people out of position, makes the whole machine run poorly.

I'm a subscriber to the notion that the receiver 'makes' the pass, and Bridges reads these situations well, its not his fault that others aren't running into space and reading the game as well as he. That's down to the bloke in the grey suit.

bridges is class. he does make a pretty mark-able impact when he does come off the bench, even if he does lose the ball a bit too easily sometimes.

Bridges in the Jets team is like a pony at the donkey show.

pulls out all the tricks the donkeys can't perform, but put him in amongst the horses and he can't even jump the first hurdle.

so we have a former retiree player who is not athletic, can only play in one specific position and nothing else, and doesn't fit in with the coaching philosophy.

I still think that's offensive. A lot of people from a lot of different walks of life go to watch Jets games and their motives are all different. When the chips were down and we were only getting 4,000 people to a match, I wouldn't have refused a single person being there, no matter what their reasons. That opinion hasn't changed despite the bigger crowds. It all adds to the theatre of the game. It's a game of opinions but also of little moments that stick in the memory, and some of them come from little cameos from the players who may be past their prime but still have a bit of skill.

I for one cheered for Bridges when he was subbed on against Adelaide, not because I think he is the Jets saviour, but because Brown needed to be replaced and it was just one of those moments where it was the right response to the situation we were in, just like I cheered when the pitch invader ran on in that game where it was the most exciting thing to happen on the field. The fact that the cheer sent chills down his spine is just great feedback to get. It is that sort of emotional connection between player and supporter that you crave for your club. At the end of the day, his performance in the Adelaide match WAS entertaining. Sorry, yes I do like to see little flicks and turns and see the defended made look like a fool. It may not be your cup of tea but each to their own. I really like to see skills that I do not possess, as well as overall tactically good play.

While I didn't think Bridges did much in the match against Roar, I note that he was put in as striker after he expressly stated that he could play much better as a no. 10, while Taggart was placed on the left. I think the positioning swapped again and roar were pressing. It was hardly a cameo appearance that can be used to attack him as a player.

if you personally are bridges, I'll say sorry for highlighting your shortfalls as a useful player for us but respectfully request you terminate your contract so we have a squad spot & visa spot available to sign someone else.

if you are not bridges - pot, kettle, black, etc. I have played no individual (non-player) man in my rants, you dialled up the class by doing that yourself.

btw I agree with barely anything you've posted on this foz to date, but haven't ridiculed you personally. #allclass #allswag #hatersgonnahate

You played a bucketload of individuals when you said;

he's cheered on by a large segment of an idiotic audience, granted you intended that to be those who cheer him are an idiot, but that doesn't change that you did play the individual in your rant.

End of the day, you don't like him so you will see nothing but the negatives you are seeing to support your argument, thats fine, buy others love the guy and have their just as valid reasons for it.

Personally, I think Bridges has a bit to offer in the number 10 role. I'd love to see him get the chance but its not going to happen for whatever reason. One things for sure though, what we are trying at the moment in that role hasn't been working either. Like Hauss, I cheered when he went on and replaced Brown in the Adelaide game.

I wasn't cheering Brown coming off, I rate the guy, but I think he could have benefited from a few runs in youth to find his legs rather than being thrown to the wolves like he was. Maybe then he wouldn't have struggled to find form like he has.

seriously, aint doubting the fact that Brides WAS a very good player... but now it is over hyped cameo, he has done alot for the club image wise but not necesarily footballing wise... woo a couple one off performances.. people have saying gve out for getting useless imports that he doesnt use. (he is still classified as a visa player, no?)

There is no doubting that he has shown some heart and passion for our town, but isnt the be all and end all. PV4 is right with the stats against Brisbane... and this has been a trend for many of the games he has come on...

Lets seriosuly move on.. we got a point, neither team really deserved the win... should be happy we didnt lose.. but still need to want more from the jets performance wise..

You fellas need to build a Bridges, because no matter what, GVE doesn't see much potential in his play. I personally believe that he has something to offer as far as creativity goes, but would need to be used in the right manner. Just not sure what that is.
