His name means brilliant, can't go wrong with him.

Another fun fact that I only found out the other day:

Tiago's name is actually pronounced "Chee-ah-gu", not "sick ****".

Aparently 10 Del Piero is the highest selling Juve shirt this season. Is no true no 9 is signed i might just do this, or get Del Piero on a Jets jersey to support what he is going to achieve for the entire league

Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets forward Ryan Griffiths will continue to wear the Club’s number 23 jersey during the 2012/13 A-League season.

Griffiths was set to switch to number 11, but he will now stay with the jersey that he wore while scoring nine goals for the Jets last season.

“I was always very fond of the number 23, because my idol was Michael Jordan and I used to love my basketball,” Griffiths said.

“I first opted to change to 23 while I was in Romania and as soon as I whacked on that number it was like my career took off. I started scoring plenty of goals and was transferred to bigger clubs.

“Ever since then I’ve been wearing it. I wore it while I was in China and I still get messages and tweets from people overseas wearing my number 23 shirt.”

The number 23 was made famous by Jordan, but has also been worn by a number of other high-profile athletes including Shane Warne, David Beckham and LeBron James.

“There’s a lot of successful sportspeople who wear the number 23 so maybe it does have some type of lucky significance,” he said.

“It’s a number that I’m happy to stick with, because I don’t know if it’s a psychological thing or not, but I really enjoy wearing it.”

Griffiths continuing to wear the number 23 jersey means defender Connor Chapman will don the number 11 shirt throughout the 2012/13 season.

pv4

am all about the chapman's wearing 11, the gallas's wearing 10. love it!

tbh i thought, judging by tweets, ryu asked for #11. when he said he was going to wear it, he said it was his favourite number & he was more like his fave player ryan giggs, who he shares initials with.

anyway, should fill the #9 with j.griffiths, hey?

If Football Manager is anything to go by, the registered first team squad members must be 1-25 (or is it 23?) and no restrictions on who wears what within that 25 (23). Other numbers are reserved for promoted NYL players or something.

James brown is rocking joggers & I haven't seen him do much, but he's definately around training & in training gear. rubez is a monster. gve looks keen to sign Joel.

I like Heskey (big fan of him when he was playing for Leicester back in the day, go the Foxes!!) but he just doesn't seem to fit the mould of the players that GVE is trying to bring in.. (Must have good engines, etc)
Unless he wants him up front as a target man? Heskey was never known for his speed or stamina.. More of a big lump up front, to get the ball and lay it off..

We haven't got a proven goal scorer. This is what we need. The last thing we need is another player who likes to give assists. I can just imagine the whole forward line (except Heskey) assisting each other and nobody wanting to put it in the back of the net (except Heskey).

To be fair Heskey is probaly the best of wats left. Vassell is terrible, and John Carew is bit more likely to just come here for a holiday. Heskey more likely to be a success in my opinion. Griff comes back in January when someone screws a knee and frees up a spot.

The crowds roar when we score is worth more to me than some cheesy arse song played like some T20 cricketer on his way out to bat.

All Music other than NTUA needs to get the **** Out of the game.

NTUA Played 5 mins before kickoff. Get the lads pumped up as they are about to walk out and can here Stade De Newy belting out OUR anthem.

Then the crowd makes the noise just before and as the players come out.

Then the next time the PA should be used is at Full time (for anything other than the ground announcer informing of subs/ goalscorers) when NTUA can be played again to celebrate OUR victory.

End of discussion. Anything else is complete shite and yesterdays announcement of letting clubs do their own thing and now doing this is a two steps forward two steps back move

A question I have about the whole thing is are we going to have to buy the rights to each of these songs allowing us to play them or is that only required if you play a certain length of time on a song?

If we do have to pay for each songs rights, and you are right - they will play a song regardless because that's what they will do, it should make more sense to buy the rights to ONE song, not 20-odd.

What they are doing is a gimmick anyway. Would still rather hear the crowd instead of a song.

does anyone know what a pre-contract in the hal actually means? are they obligated to play for whatever team they sign one for, or is it more of a letter of intent and if someone comes through with a better offer they can go there?

we used to sign them in nbn, but i'm pretty sure they meant sfa when it came to contract-signing-time at the start of the season - so many blokes signed them & played for different clubs instead.

MFKS

Believe it is more of a letter of intent arrangement. As of whatever date these Pissant players who remain unsigned are able to test the waters of what is available out there.

Our club could e.g offer Ian Ramsay a 150k a year 3 year deal. Ramsay could sign the pre contract saying he wants in. Ramsay for all intensive purposes could make his mind up there and then he is coming to Newy next year but can't actually sign a legitimate deal to do so until another set date.

In the meantime Pissants and other clubs can continue to offer Ramsay a deal and Ramsay can then still renege on the deal with us if he gets a better offer else where.

Eventually a date will pass and Ramsay can then sign on dotted line for whatever club he feels.

Our pre contract deal holds no sway but could be used by Ramsay and agent to make sure we live up to our offer or miss out on him signing if we decide to reduce the value of our offer and on the flip side can be used also by the club to entice him over the line by showing their levels of committment in bringing him to Newy

You've got to admit, though, it was fair enough to think that we wouldn't get a no. 9. I mean, it's not exactly as if the club has an illustrious history of signing strikers or anything. And they certainly left it until very late in the off-season (again).

As for Heskey: I won't deny being among the initial knockers, because I usually base my first reaction to attackers that we sign on their scoring record. But once my knee-jerk response based on the fact that the Jets have never really signed a good striker (other than Griff) wore off, I realised that a bloke who's played his whole career at the top level in England had to have at least a decent chance of tearing up the A-League - regardless of his rep. So far, so good! He seems to have settled in really well, and I'm disappointed I can't be there every weekend to watch him play.

I hope his surgery is successful as well. I hope he comes back the player we all want him to be. At present he is a weak link in our team and I cringe when he is selected. Feel his absence will hopefully force GVE's hand to sort out or realise he needs to sign someone for our Central midfield because the combo of Kanta Zads and Jobe don't cut it in my eyes to play the way he wants us to. Need someone in there with a bit of class and these 3 don't have the touch of class say a KFC Hernandez or Flores Nicky Carle would bring

Grossman joins Jets on injury cover deal
Tuesday, 20 November 2012 9:30 AM

The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets have signed former North Queensland Fury player Chris Grossman as injury cover for midfielder Ben Kantarovski.

Kantarovski had arthroscopic surgery last week to clean up a small meniscus tear in his right knee and is likely to be sidelined for four to six weeks.

Grossman joins the Jets having made 43 A-League appearances for the Fury between 2009 and 2011. Prior to that the 25-year-old played seven matches for Queensland Roar during three seasons at the Club.

He has most recently been playing with Moreland Zebras in the Victorian Premier League (VPL).

“It’s unfortunate for Ben that he’s out injured with his knee, but I’ve been lucky enough to be called in to help out for a few weeks and I’m here to enjoy it, so it’s a great opportunity,” Grossman said.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for myself. The Jets are doing extremely well this season sitting where they are and I’m hoping to come in now and add something and help their roll-on in the season."

Grossman said he has been working hard to keep himself in shape since the conclusion of the VPL season in the hope that he would be picked up by an A-League Club.

“I’m hopeful of still getting back in the A-League and this is a great opportunity for myself and I’ve got to prove it with the time I’ve got here,” he said.

“I’ve been playing in the Victorian Premier League and keeping myself fit.

“That season finished about a month ago now, so I’ve had to do a little bit of extra work by myself, but I’m ready to get rolling tomorrow at training and hopefully push my case for next week’s game in Melbourne.”

The former Young Socceroo said he was eager to make a positive contribution to the Newcastle squad during his time at the Club.

“I’ve heard a lot about the boys here, that they’re a great group of guys. They’re sitting in a great position now so hopefully I can come in and it can be smooth sailing and we can all have success together,” he said.

Now that Birraz and BK are out the Egg and Deans should be showing faith in Jack and saying we believe you are good enough to play.

Jack Duncan should be in Nets at AAMI this weekend if we are fair dinkum. Show some faith in the ****ing kids. Playing a Newy reject in Nashy before him and even signing another bloke to sit on the bench at Duncan's expense is a ****ing CRIME.

Vrteski in as cover for injured goalkeepers Thursday, 22 November 2012 2:59 PM

The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets have signed former Perth Glory goalkeeper Aleks Vrteski as cover for the Club’s injured shot-stoppers.

Vrteski made 13 appearances for the Glory during two separate stints at the Club in the 2006/07 and 2009/10 seasons.

The 24-year-old former Young Socceroo arrived in Newcastle on Wednesday after playing 18 matches with Persija Jakarta in the Indonesian Premier League last season.

With Ben Kennedy already missing with a knee injury, Vrteski was given the opportunity to link up with the Jets as injury cover after Mark Birighitti fractured his cheekbone during last Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Wellington.

Vrteski said he would be looking to put his best foot forward during his time with the Jets.

“It’s really unfortunate what has happened to Mark, especially considering how well he was playing,” Vrteski said.

“He’s a Perth boy as well and a good friend of mine and you never like to see that sort of injury.

“I’ve got a good opportunity now and I just need to train well and do the best I can to help the team. If I get a chance to play I’m confident I can do a good job.”

Scott Neville and Josh Mitchell were teammates of Vrteski while he was at the Glory and he said knowing them had made it easier to settle in.

“Scott has been great since I first made contact with the Jets and he’s offered to let me stay at his place,” Vrteski said.

“It definitely helps having familiar faces like Scott and Josh here to help you settle in.

“It’s a good environment here and even though the last result was not what they wanted, I can see the way they've trained today and I know they’ll be keen to bounce back.”

Thought signings in the HAL could only go through come the 14th of January hence why Lord Griffo can't play yet for Smurfs

Might be allowed to play NYL though cause they have some weird shit going on there with some form of interchange used at games

I've been thinking for a couple of weeks now that it does not make sense that James Brown and Heskey play in the same team. They perform a very similar function and it doesn't make sense to have two people on the field doing essentially the same job (although in somewhat different styles).

I could understand a Brown/Smeltz combination or a Heskey/Joel combination but not a Brown/Heskey combination.

MFKS

Browns a waste of space at present. Don't quite see how Heskey is that bad ??

Not saying Heskey is bad at all. I just think we are unbalanced at the front. And I don't necessarily think a "no. 10" is the answer. After all, Heskey did his best work when he had Owen running off him.

MFKS
31-01-2013, 11:37 AM
Well that is the formation the Egg has us playing. Heskey ain't gonna get a strike partner up front come what may.

The Egg sticks to his pattern on this pretty solidly. Playing 2 up front in a standard strikeforce of yesteryear just will not happen.

Better get used to it and work out who we can get to do Browns job a bit better than he does

Agree with this.

Playing the way we do I feel we do need a bloke to play up front to run in behind and stretch defences by playing on the last man's shoulder. Unfortunately Heskey don't play this way. Once the in behind threat came Brown Chilli Goody etc would offer more of a threat with the opponent having to worry about more about dropping in to cover the forward runs from us.

Bloke in my Avatar would have been perfect for this

Maybe we could have a front four of:

Virgilli.......Heskey......Goodwin
...............RyGriff

Playing Heskey behind Griff will be an unexpected ploy, and would allow Heskey to roam, while keeping a Striker at the point.

Won't happen though, can dream.

Not exactly the worst idea. Heskey has shown himself quite adapt at coming short controlling ball laying off to teammate. Also play him here he would be quite hard to mark. Assuming he had the fitness to make some late runs in the box would open up a world of possibilities particularly if GVE paired him with Taggz. Taggz would offer the in behind the line threat and Heskey would have a pile of room to play in

Why wouldn't he be going back??

At present he is uncontracted next season and can easily jump another flight back if things change.

Wouldn't expect Heskey to be walking the streets of Newy all winter either and will most likely be back in the UK and can tie up a new contract from there

I think the idea was to have Ritter as the attacking LB and use Mitchell and Chapman as the CB's, until we discovered that Mitchell wasnt good enough. And then when he tried Regz in CB he never got a look in again after the debarcle in Wellington.

To me the issue with Ritter is pretty straight forward. He is an OK player at this level but nothing special and like all has a few weaknesses for opposition to exploit. With the way our season went this year and the fans seeming to want change/ dramatic improvement to arrest our low pecking order place Ritters future looks bleak.

As most of our squad is already signed we only have what 4-5 positions left. Now we can resign Ritter or we can look to sign a replacement superior to him that will hopefully fix a few of our issues. I don't see the Ritter/Chapo partnership being world beater material next season. I do though like the idea of getting a bigger quicker in who can offer some leadership and direction t the side/defence and also help Chapo out.

To me the choice is pretty simple Bye Bye Dom

So supposedly we're trialling Sebastian Usai (of NQF and then bench warmer for Blackburn) and some John Solari bloke who I have never heard of, both for that critical 3rd keeping spot. Usai is an interesting one, still don't get why we're looking for a 3rd senior keeper though, seems like a waste of a squad spot. Surely the youth team keeper (whoever that is) will be decent enough as a 3rd option.

Birraz>> then BK >>> then if needed call some one in on loan ala what we done with Nashy last year.

Why in gods name do we need a 3rd EXPERIENCED keeper for??

Surely the young yoof keeper can fill in this role and be overlooked for loan keeper when our keepers get kicked in the head again like we did with jack Duncan last season.

If Birraz is leaving then surely we need to be looking at signing a replacement of a calibre greater than these two mentioned as BK isn't good enough

Jets highlight key areas for recruitment

http://static.ffa.sportalhosting.com/site/_content/article/00068200-leadimage.jpg
Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets head coach Gary van Egmond has confirmed the club is still on the lookout for a player to bolster their options in the attacking third, as well as an experienced central defender.

The Jets confirmed on Wednesday that Socceroos international Harry Kewell would not be joining the Club for the 2013/14 A-League season

However, van Egmond said the Club would still be looking to add another high-quality attacker to their roster, along with a central defender.

“It doesn’t alter who we’re looking at positionally from the fact that we need an attacking player and a left-sided stopper,” van Egmond said.

“They’re the two areas that we’re looking to get and we need both to have a good deal of experience, especially in the backline.

“We’ve got some good young players coming through, but we need someone to give them a little bit of direction, controlling that back four and our defensive shape at times.

“I think that’s something that we really missed last year.”

Van Egmond said that if Kewell was to make a return to the A-League this season, it would be beneficial for the whole competition.

“Of course we would have liked to have someone like Harry come to our Club, but it wasn’t to be,” van Egmond said.

“I read a couple of interesting articles where it was quoted that it was to do with money or what have you, but I don’t think that’s the case. I don’t think Harry would be signing anywhere just for the money.

“I still see it as a real positive for the A-League (if he returns).

“Last year we had Shinji Ono at the Wanderers, Del Piero at Sydney FC and obviously Emile here in Newcastle.

“Now it looks like we’ll have another high profile player at Melbourne Heart, hopefully that might be the impetus for a couple of other teams to get that type of player as well.”

Van Egmond was speaking following Hunter Sports Group’s announcement that nib health funds (nib) had reaffirmed its commitment to the Newcastle Jets and Newcastle Knights by extending its major partnership for an additional 12 months.

Under the agreement, the local health insurer will maintain its coveted sleeve sponsorship with the nib logo appearing on the sleeve of the players’ jersey for both clubs.

“It’s fantastic from the perspective that it’s a Newcastle icon as far as a brand is concerned,” van Egmond said.

“Their partnership with the Knights is the longest-running sponsorship as far as rugby league is concerned and hopefully that can in turn happen for the Jets as well.

“It’s fantastic that it’s a local company that is getting behind the Jets and the Knights and in a very competitive market for sponsorship, to have nib renewed is fantastic.”

Seriously, would be nice if the club could spew out anything more than this tired, old rhetoric.
