Nah, flogs like Milligan and McKay can get called up while being not good enough or shit, the Beard should be in the squad ahead of either of them. Jimmy H before all of them though.

I'm not a fan of Troisi with Luongo, essentially playing 2 AMs in the middle, but apart from Bresh who is on his last legs do we have anybody else who can play a proper CM role? (Don't say McKay or you will be moved up to the top of my kill list)

It was always gonna be obvious that nerves were gonna play a big part, but they came back well.

Who got MOTM?

Luongo MOTM.

Antonis? We could even move Cahill back 10 years and have him play in midfield, making the late late runs into the box like he used to.

Brilliant, love the little Indo.

Yeah Terry is a good shout, maybe a little bit raw for now but he will be the perfect foil in a couple of years, but by all means blood him now.

Not sold on Franjic either, I believe there are better RBs than him. Good on the attack but a bit of a liability in defence. Probably a tad biased but I'd like to see Chris Herd ahead of him.

The defending for Kuwaits goal is terrible
And a majority of our goals wouldn't have been scored against better defences
And a majority of our chances came from Kuwait handing us the ball although the way we defended was good, we had players positioned correctly
We shouldn't get ahead of ourselves, a lot of work is to be done to beat teams like Iran, Japan and South Korea to challenge for the Cup

Whats the set up like down there??

At the fan fests at the WC you could buy piss and grub and kick back and watch the game with a pile of other sponsor shit to keep you occupied like mini fields and shoot at goal things etc like you may see at HAL games. In between games they had musicians/DJs etc going

The price of food and grub was not great price wise Brazillian standards but not as much of a rort as you find at stadiums/events in this country so you could actually attend and not be violated in the wallet.

All in all was not a bad place to watch games

Wouldn't mind dropping in and checking it out. Am I gonna be able to grab a beer or two whilst there or not??

WolfMan

Dare say you would have to frequent the nearby licensed establishments for a brew MFKS. No way they would approve a liquor licence in an open area like that IMHO, especially so close to businesses doing the same. They wouldn't have signed off on such a request.

No kick abouts or DJs or anything, it's right in front of the dockyard etc so you can go buy grub and a beer from there, if you get there early enough you'll have a good seat in front of the screen at the dockyard. Plenty of room to set up your chair and esky if you bring your own booze. Or you could do what a group of guys did and bring down your own lounge.

I'll be a frequent viewer down there, might even take a rod and bait and have a cast too.

Not even specifically talking about that dude, but there seems to be 1000 blokes so far this weekend who play at a speed and technical level much more advanced than A-League.
I just remember Roar signing the big centre back from the Middle East a few years back and he was a star. Just seems like a part of the world we don't look close enough at.

I would think the gulf region players would be on pretty good money compared to HAL

Just look at how many blokes go play there and stay there.

Bresciano has to be getting good coin otherwise he would be back in Australia as a marquee in a flash

There are plenty of other Aussies who have went there when they could have stayed or got a gig in the HAL.

That says to me the money is much better

The blokes not up to the standard of anything than being a first class ****.

The booking he gave the Iranian for scoring after an offside call was a disgrace. Who would have heard the whistle in that environment as the Iran support went off when they got within kooee of the goal.

For all of their midfield flair Japan are really lacking up front. Yeah yeah they scored 4 goals but I just felt they were short at the point. They seemed to play one ball too many and want to pass the ball into the net.

They're very quick on the break but if you can limit them getting in behind I think you go along way to shutting them down.

Active support on both sides did well. Certainly no issues where we were seated in bay 10. 15000 seemed a bit short to me. Was the top teir of eastern stand full?

If that is a 15k crowd then the Jets bullshit us with their crowds.

The Eastern Stand was 80-90% full. The western stand was 80% full if you take out the media and cordoned off seats. There was also a few on the hill. I was expecting a 20k crowd.

Good thing is I think that Newy made a compelling case to hold a Socceroo match in the future. The turnout also would have said to the FFA clearly that they have to fix our Jets issues as the support is here. It just needs harnessing

I was in the back row of the Eastern Stand and it was packed. Getting into the ground took ages compared to a Jets game as well and my bag wasn't searched today, unlike at a Jets game.

If that was 15,000 then both the Jets and the Knights are professional fudgers of the crowd figures.

Based on crowds at the Jets (and knights on the TV) I would have been expecting 20,000 easily.

While I loved the crowd, and loved the general Newy public getting behind the game and all that - I can't agree with this line. There were so many Japanese and Palestinian fans there - I wouldn't say they were unharnassed Newy fans as much as just their to see their team. There was also a heap of CCM, SFC and other club jerseys scouted in the place.

Saturday will be a better test of how much the newy public has taken to it - two teams that aren't necessarily draw-cards, yet on a Saturday night.

I have doubts over whether it is true or not (I can't remember where I read it - prob some hype-driven thing on facebook that I was suckered into amirite), but my bank account is one thing I care about in this world so nowadays I attempt to chop up things like tickets, hotel cards, etc just in case.

Luongo was great when he was on
I thought McKay did quite well
Oman looked better than Kuwait did IMO

went to the south korea v Kuwait game last night. Kuwait were good, korea slightly more classy where it mattered and did look they were playing in 3rd gear for the first half. Kuwait stepped up in the second (particularly in the last 20 minutes) and but for a coat of paint would have equalised. I think korea played within themselves, got a bit lucky, but should step up for Saturday's match. I think we've got them covered though, particularly as a draw is enough to go through in 1st.

Hot scouting tip for Stubbsy: Aziz from Kuwait would be a great no. 10. has a slight problem with passing (although I can't back that up, his passing could be brilliant, it's just that he didn't pass all night!)

got wet, bolted home at the full time whistle, missed the first 30 seconds of the socceroos match. how good is it living 500m from the stadium? took me longer to get out of the stadium than from the stadium to home.

Spiras newest fan right here, I don't think I've ever seen a defender look so composed and calm on the ball as much as him. A ball playing defender of a high quality. Plus that Backheel to Kruse that set up Bresciano. Phwoar, nearly blew my load.

But disappointed in our crosses tonight, and a few of our set pieces, if we could take Bresciano's dead ball ability and give it to Massimo he'd be complete

Yep he is all class!

Runs a lot. Good on him. Could have put one of 20 other midfielders in there with engines and they would have done the same thing. He's just above average in everything... Jeggo is better.

I feel like over the last month I've had arguments with people a lot about how they don't rate Milligan and McKay for the Socceroos. I thought both of them were outstanding (as I usually do) last night. Would also like to give a big shoutout to my main man MFAW in regards to him saying he doesn't rate Juric  I still can't believe you were rallying for Alex Wilkinson to be in the Socceroos for all this time - we're so much fxxxing better without him!

Love that Spira is still Spira. I've loved that guy since I first saw him.

And I copped a lot of shit for my views in the past (and probably always will) but far out, Sainsbury is good!

McKay (apart from the left back era) has never had a "bad" game for the Socceroos I can recall. But he doesn't have any kind of x-factor and can't break a game apart like Luongo did in the first half. And don't mention the long ball to Juric... Jobe/Zad/any other average midfielder would have done the same, it's not some glorious bit of amazing football when the other team is pushing hard for a goal.

And that's ignoring the fact that he has been average in an average side this year... shouldn't even be in the squad in the first case. Form my arse. Ange out. (not really)

McKay and milligan while impressive for me last night are no value when the pressures on

i reckon jedinak does both there jobs hence no need for him.

i personally would be playing

jedinak, luongo and tommy oar as my 3

tommy has played in the hole for utrect all season.

As much as Bresciano has been a loyal foot soldier for Socceroos over the years last night showed that Ange needs to pension him off.

First half we attacked at speed with a high tempo game and looked fantastic.

Second half Bresciano comes on the attack speed plummets and we don't look as good.

Going forward with the likes of Luongo Sarota DeSilva Antonio and even Tommy Rogic hopefully this tourney will be his swan song.

Not knocking his ability but the way Ange is playing he is a square peg in a round hole

Juric is probably one of the best natural goal scorers in Australia atm, he's just got that knack, plus it helps him being a gigantor, getting on the end of crosses

The beauty of McKay is he is Ange's perfect player.

Ange (and all international coaches) get bugger all time with their squad to implement their system. McKay is so adaptable to everything, and knows Ange's philosophy backwards.

No, he won't provide the X-factor of Luongo. No, he won't score like Cahill. But he does his job, which is exactly why he is the perfect option for Ange.

We can't play a lone holding mid unless we have Jedinak. When Jedi is out, we don't have the quality to replace him with one man so need to go to 2. This works perfectly with Milligan/McKay because Milligan does the yards defensively, and McKay follows the ball around like a puppy dog and will rarely if ever turn over possession. And that's good, because we have some highly active, mobile players in Leckie, Troisi, Luongo, Kruse, Oar that we move the ball around, and switch it, a lot. And we're lucky to have someone of McKay's engine-room to be the outlet for those players. How often do you see in a Jerks game we switch the ball and the guy (usually Hoole, or Carney) who gets it on the wing is just compeltely isolated. This rarely happens when McKay is on the field for Australia.

After saying all that, I'm not sold on Oar still tbh. And I'd definitely not play him in the hole at this level, particularly now that all of our remaining games are against top opposition.

MFAW saying Matt Simon is better than anyone smh

This is absolutely spot on, the bloke just works so hard and does the basics. No he doesn't have the X factor but you don't need every single player in your team to play killer passes. With Luongo, Troisi, Leckie, Kruse and Oar there are plent of blokes who will pick the ball up off him and try to do something with it. His cover of Milligan (who i also thought was brilliant) was great.

I also agree that when Jedinak plays, he does the job of these two combined which gives you the luxury of another forward player. In my opinion, right now on form, that extra player should be Troisi. Oar has so much potential, its obvious he does it for his club side, but he is still yet to really find his feet at international level.

Juric has a ton of skill / ability but lacks consistency. If he ever becomes consistent he will be playing in Europe.
Happy to see him playing for Australia and won't be suprised if he one day makes the grade so to speak in Europe.
Alternatively, I won't be suprised if he still lacks consistency in ten years time either.

So we've booked a spot in the quarters, what do we do against South Korea? Do we play a second string team and rest our first teamers? Will this disrupt our cohesion?

I think momentum plays a massive part and we should play a number of our first teamers but rest a few.

Newy crowd till seems well short...guess we'll never know the true crowd.

And apparently max stadium capacity is 22,000 for this tournament !!?? So, if Japan v Aus is on in the semi the stadium cannot be filled as those on the hill are people who bought seats and just moved.

I think we should be trying to top the group. I assume Uzbekistan will top Group B, which would see us likely play Saudi Arabia or China. Saudi Arabia without Al Spitter is a good fixture for us, I think.

In saying that, this Korea game will be a good chance for us to keep our cards closer to our chest when facing better opposition, as well as give us a chance to rest injuries/fatigue/etc.

It'd probably be best for all our players on a yellow to play this one, so they get potentially suspended for our first game out of the group rather than further into the tournament.

I think it will be much the same with a couple more rotations.
Davidson, Franjic and Kruse to rest (Kruse off the bench though)
Behich, Herd and Burns to come in.
Cahill to still only play maybe 50-60 minutes and Juric the rest

I don't think it matter who we play in the next match, i think we have all 3 of Uzbeks, Saudis and China covered. Its more falling to Japans side of the draw which is the biggest thing to avoid. We want to play them in the final!
