Why does Melbourne the 2nd biggest sport supporting city in Aus behind us not have one of- a semi, final or 3v4?
Jetmaster
24-01-2015, 09:59 AM
The Vic govt didn't bid enough for the big games because they already had Aus Open and cricket WC lined up.....very basically it.
That is why all the last four games are all in NSW, the govt spent more.

Why does Melbourne the 2nd biggest sport supporting city in Aus behind us not have one of- a semi, final or 3v4?
Their state govt didn't bid on the games in the latter stages due to already having a big commitment to Aust open tennis.
I was down there last weekend. The Sydney international tennis got priority on the big screen over the Aust v Sth Korea game.

Yeah not sure abt Qld, other than it not being a big vote winner for the pollies to chase it. When the bidding process was done Qld were on a massive public spending tightening. Maybe it didn't sound like good PR.
And yes they would be regretting that decision now.
NSW being corrupt as all hell just threw money at whoever asked apparently.
Top stuff.

I think that long term Melbourne would have had to prioritise the tennis over a one off event like the Asian cup.
Tennis Chiefs have been itching to move the 1st major of the year to Asia for ages so there was prob a lot of pressure there.

I'm with everyone on the planet who thought the first yellow was soft.
But for that same bloke to commit 3 yellow card offences in one second he only has himself to blame.
I just think Williams' rep is influencing people's criticism.
I'm judging it just on that one incident.
There was a pretty bad offsides call against Japan early last night but people were like 'meh' BUT BEN WILLIAMS MUST BE KILLED.

The best bit about your defending of this decision is when you called the full blooded swing stomach height at a ball the keeper had in his hand as an identical foul to the player jumping over a GK and making almost non existent contact.
The GK gets up and gives the Iranian a stiff arm, square in the chest. Where is the card for raising your hands against an opponent?
GazFish35
24-01-2015, 12:04 PM
A stiff arm in the chest?
A gentle push away, which then reacts to by falling like he's been shot and holds his face, doesn't get up when told to by ref. deserved a yellow.
Like the ref, the player too should have known he was on a yellow, and not been such a tool.
It was like rivaldo clutching his face when hit in the knee with a ball, and the whole world was baying for blood that the ref was conned.
Williams wasn't conned.....
But the first yellow was soft as hell.

Wot?
First one was a foot left in on the keeper.
Dirty cheap shot.
Other was s clear foul but was way closer to a 50/50 ball.
Both fouls.
Both cards.
I still say the cheap shot is way worse than the bloke at least going for the ball.

Theres 3 outcomes of the whole simulation debate.
1. Player takes a dive, no contact. Book him. Simple. This needs to be done more.
2. Player legitimately gets fouled. Give the free. Duh.
And this is the troublesome one.
3. Player dives after receiving minimal contact.
This has the argument that the player is trying to trick the referee into believing there was a foul by simulating, exaggerating etc. BUT, can the referee be justified in handing him a Yellow for simulation if there was actual contact. The other side, can the referee ignore the simulation, and ignore the minimal contact as it was not enough to warrant a free kick? This is the grey area imo.

To me there is no grey area.
Ref start booking people for what they believe is simulation and players no the consequence will be yellow then lets see how much they want to try it on.
You may book a few incorrectly to start with but the diving will soon stop.
Refs just need to stop putting up with it and deal with it

Or maybe the member has filled his glass a little past half for once and is seeing things a little differently...I doubt it though, more likely a small stroke for him
So, Player A makes a run past Player B. Player A plants foot, player B plants his foot on Player A's boot. Player A dives.
What do you do?
Use of words is a little grey to get the picture of whats happened here.
Either Player A has been fouled or player A has dived.
Ref to make a decision (HIS INTERPRETATION) and then act accordingly.
If he deems it a foul then a direct free kick to attacking team and assess the severity of the impact and determine if a yellow/red is necessary or not and act accordingly
If he deems no foul and the bloke has dived. Reach into his top pocket find his yellow and march over like a pompous twat and wave it in the face of the Robben impersonator
Its pretty simple really.
It shits me watching games when there is contact and a bloke has made a meal of it and ref waves play on. It is either a foul or a dive.
Act on these things

A top Asian football official has backed Australia to host the World Cup after organising the "best ever" Asian Cup with full stadiums and record TV audiences in the region.
Asian Football Confederation (AFC) general secretary Alex Soosay said Australia, which lost out to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, had overcome initial doubts within the body.
At the quarter-final stage, attendances have already soared past Qatar 2011 and TV ratings in China, Japan and South Korea have hit new highs for the tournament.
"I think holding a World Cup in Australia, definitely, they have the mettle, they have the confidence, they have the infrastructure," Soosay said.
"They have everything here to host. I think it will be a remarkable World Cup here if Australia host the World Cup."
Asian backing would be important if Australia does launch another bid for the World Cup following their disappointing campaign for 2022.
Australia attracted only one vote when the 2018 and 2022 hosts were decided in late 2010. The bidding process was later investigated following claims of corruption.
Soosay said the AFC was initially "not very optimistic" about rugby and cricket-mad Australia hosting the Asian Cup when the body first considered it in 2011.
But attendances of more than 465,000, with two stadiums sold-out, and a Twitter reach nudging two billion have put any doubts to rest and set a high bar for future hosts.
"It's truly another World Cup. Six months, seven months ago in Brazil we enjoyed spectacular fan support and today we're seeing Australians in their yellow (shirts) - we're seeing another samba kind of support," Soosay said.
I think holding a World Cup in Australia, definitely, they have the mettle, they have the confidence, they have the infrastructure.
AFC secretary general Alex Soosay
"The fans are enjoying it, that's very encouraging for us. Really it's the best ever Asian Cup and we don't want to lose this momentum. For the next one, how are we going to sustain this?"
Soosay said United Arab Emirates, one of only two remaining bidders alongside Iran, was a strong candidate to hold the 2019 Asian Cup. The eventual hosts will be announced in March.
"They have the facilities, they have the training fields, they have the hotels, they have the infrastructure," he said.
"Everything is ready-made in the UAE."
Soosay said Iran was more "challenging" logistically. But if chosen, UAE would find it difficult to match the stadium atmosphere generated by Australia's patchwork of expat fans.
"Yesterday the majority of the crowd was Chinese, it was almost like Chinatown in Brisbane," he said, referring to Thursday's quarter-final between Australia and China.
He added that momentum was now behind Australia, with the Socceroos in the semi-finals, as football tries to rival the country's leading sports codes.
"In Melbourne yesterday we had football there, and in the other stadium next to the Rectangular Stadium we had the Australian Open tennis," Soosay said.
"We were looking at the fans and we saw more people walking into the Rectangular Stadium than into the tennis arena... football attracts more people and it's a more exciting competition."
.
One of the best decisions ever seen. Guy should be getting kudos
no red card, no best game
might as well light the powder keg
Time to face some facts and realities about this.
Last nights results have basically given us the best chance ever to win this comp.
We have a final at home at a ground we rarely lose at. We are playing before a home crowd and their is no one left to fear in the comp
We showed last Saturday we can beat Korea. It was not out night. Play that way again and we beat them 9 times out of 10. Their No 7 is all class but he can be shackled
As for the rest of the teams left UAE may have that bloke who looks like David Luiz and can actually play but there is little to be frightened of with them as a unit. The 120 mins of chasing Nippon around will see them physically spent and the emotional high will be hard to overcome with another performance against a host nation who have had a pretty good run physically in the tourney.
Iraq do have a player who deserves respect in Younis Mahmood who should have played his career at a much higher level than he has but I have seen little to be frightened of.
There are a couple of huge things riding heavily on Ange Timmy and co winning next Tuesday and Saturday nights games
A trip to Russia in 2017 awaits. Russia Germany Sth American/Euro Champion 2016 etc be great preparation for WC 2018 plus I am pretty sure FIFA throw some money FFA's way for participating
Last Thursdays China game got TV viewing figures in the million plus mark. I am pretty sure our semi on Tuesday will also be million plus (shame it ain't the Japs making it a more must see match)
We get to Saturdays final and it is pretty certain to be one of the best viewed events of 2015.
These TV ratings are a huge thing as it will be just the spark to push more money into the HAL in Sponsorship as some of the dimwits in Corporate Australia see the potential of investing in our code not to mention will mean that 7-9-10 etc will be much more interested in competing for TV Contracts for not only Socceroos fixtures but HAL and other football.
This has the potential to be the greatest kick along to the future of this code since that glorious November night in 2005 when Aloisi showed Honda and Kagawa and co how to actually take a ****ing penalty at Stade Australia
A lot is actually riding squarely on the shoulders of Ange Timmy and co. than winning two games of football and a ****ing trophy.
NO PRESSURE BOYS BUT IT IS IMPERATIVE YOU DELIVER

Has the bloke been sanctioned by any of the approved doping authorities by FIFA??
If so and he is banned then there may be a case but then the onus for the **** up is on the AFC for allowing his registration for the tourney and the Iraq FA for picking and playing him.
If the bloke has failed a drugs test and hasn't been tried and found guilty then there is **** all that can be done as the case would need to be tried already for a Iraq out Iran In verdict as you couldn't kick Iraq out when the bloke hasn't been found guilty yet
The whole thing is a farce anyway as the Iranians if they had any gripes with this had all tourney to bring it up and could have easily brought it up pre game at any of the umpteen interviews they had before the Asian Cup Press FFS

great game despite the weather.
south korea were all over them last night from the get go. little bit of a comeback from iraq during the second half, but the koreans were never really challenged. whoever wins tonight, they are at serious risk of being out-chanted by the korean fans, they were awesome.
looking forward to the final, hopefully the weather is better this time!

**** oath it does. Heavy pitch our blokes with extra day rest our opponent having 120 mins in the legs. Not to mention our Euro players will be quite used to playing in these conditions.
We should be more dominant the longer it goes.
We get an early goal or two and we will walk all over them like one would do to a certain Hunter based ALeague side and chalk up a bag ful

I'll be happy tonight if the Socceroos are Adelaide and UAE are the Jets - go up in less than two minutes, score at will for the next eighty eight
but hey, no team could ever score seven goals in the semi final of a major tournament though yeah?

What's with these media soft cawks Lynch, Hassat and Duvotovic going on about a lack of atmosphere tonight?
I really don't get it. The thing about a Newy crowd is that they cheer in the right places, they applaud in the right places, they groan in the right places, and they anticipate a goal. They know how to bring a team home. This tells me we have a very educated crowd. Tonight I had guys around me debating various aspects of tactics and player performance. A newy crowd is engaged in the game.
So what if Newcastle people don't sing. It's an anglo trait and a sign of the mainstream nature of the football in our city. Expect more of this if the game becomes more and more mainstream in the rest of the country.
These dicks want to turn crowds into performing seals, cheerleaders. For what? So that they can go on about how great the atmosphere is? Funny listening to Duvutovic say what needs to happen to create more active support like he is a chess master pushing the pawns around.

But I do agree with you hauss, the fans last night were really engrossed in the match so yes they were quiet during some stages. I don't think that it was a problem but as I said before, after the rumblings about Newcastle getting the semi in the first place, they're going to be looking for reasons to say they didn't deserve it.
I think the city represented well last night.

I've been to Socceroos games at ANZ where you can hear a pin drop.
I guess last night also shows that NSW's second city has always had a raw deal stadium wise & that we deserve better.
I'm sure if there were 35,000 in a stadium that had a roof at either end to keep the noise in they'd be raving instead of complaining.

I thought the active support was pretty poor last night. Far too many bouts of silence mixed in with a sporadic song.

Membah, not sure how it was in Bris but I thought the organised active was far better than the active support in Sydney which was a shambles. For future reference please note the difference between acoustics on the hill vs acoustics in the stands (UAE supporters).

The Koreans were ****ing out doing us something shocking in Brisbane.
45k crowd about 3-4k of Koreans were out doing us every time we had a chant going they would come back twice as loud.
They only seemed to have 1 chant though but they all got in on it.
I ain't expecting a RBB Wanderland wankfest etc from the NT active support but it should be a hell of a lot better than it is which is a ****ing shambles. At least stay involved in it for the majority of the match regardless of what the rest of the plastic fans are doing not a sporadic interlude like it is. Wow that was a great buzz standing on the southern hill. Helped prepare the Aussie flag pullover thing at games start too. I would have to rate that as one of the best experiences in the home end, the call and response Aussie chant with the eastern stand was amazing too. Fantastic visual presence too with the flag waving.
Hope that sent a message to the FFA that active support can work on the hill only issue is the acoustics are alot different.

Apparently the Russian WCQ Campaign is getting changed and we will have 2 groups of 5 to negotiate to get to Russia this time.
There was talk the other week that the FFA are looking at spreading the Socceroos around to places like Canberra Adelaide Newy Gold Coast etc instead of playing all the games before not full stadiums in Sydney Melburn Brisbane except when we play a Japan Korea etc
I think the Asian Cup has ensured this will be done with the large turnouts by locals for basketcase games between 2 sides most Australians wouldn't be able to find on a map

If they are not amalgamating the Asian Cup 19 and WC 18 Qualifiers into one and keeping them separate I would rather we had to qualify for 2019.
Feel the games being genuine and not glorified friendlies are good prep to blood players and develop our side under battle conditions.

I'm going to go against the apparent grain on here and say that i thought the atmosphere at the Oman sydney game was way better than this UAE one. But being at a field that didn't have the open ends to drown noise out, plus being twice as full, is probably the main reason for this.
In saying that, the atmosphere the Iran supporters made was 10 times better than both.

Apparently even though it is listed as sold out, you can still buy individual tickets from the AFC website for the final.

I don't believe they are counting freebies at other games so I would expect the freebies everyone got today by email don't count either
2 enthusiastic teams made for a good 3rd 4th playoff.
if it wasnt for the ticket give away the crowd would have struggled to get above 8000 imo.
More than ever do we need Australian football to drive the fans to love this game as our home front offers to rip it out from us.

As I said before 3rd v 4th place games are a waste of time buying tickets early.
The only issue with them can be if the host country is playing and even then you don't find that out until a few days prior so still have plenty of time to get in the week of the game and buy

Football day: biggest football day in australia since 2005. Love it.
Result is imperative today.
Not forgetting the trophy Confed Cup berth on the line, a pile of money into the code and also a boost for our ****ed FIFA Ranking. We need to get it up before the WC Draw is done so we are seeded.
Winning a game of football has never been so important since November 2005

we will loose
we will loose
This isn't the Jets.
We at least have a chance to win today.
Rather interesting feeling knowing I am going to the football today I care about the result and I believe we can win as well as lose and the whole thing is in the balance and could go either way.
Tuesday night I was adamant we would win so the nerves and fear were not there
Usually with the Jets I hope we win and believe we will lose.
Amazing what a degree of confidence in the coach and players having the ability to pull it off can do
Reports in the Australian media claimed that a movement was gathering pace within the AFC to throw Australia out.
Australia, which is hosting the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, is set to face Korea Republic in the tournament final in Sydney on Saturday night.
The speculation was centred on quotes from Sheikh Salman in the Dubai-based newspaper Al Ittihad, with other Australian journalists claiming on Twitter that many Middle Eastern nations were annoyed with Australia's perceived lack of commitment to Asian football.
The Sydney Morning Herald quoted Sheikh Salman as saying: "There are indications that prove that such desire exists among the confederations of west Asia to evict Australia.
"But I also know that the Arabs are not the only ones who are not convinced that Australia's membership in Asia's football is feasible."
However on Friday, Sheikh Salman claimed his quotes had been "manipulated".
"I'm really stunned with the timing to bring this topic out. It's a false topic," Sheikh Salman told the Herald Sun.
"To read a story like this is really sad because there's no truth in it.
"The success of this tournament has exceeded our expectations. I won't let a story like this affect the success of the tournament we had in Australia.
"We have to put this record straight. It's been manipulated in a way to make it negative."
To be expelled from the AFC, a member association must meet one of four criteria and then have a three-quarters majority vote to throw them out at the organisation's annual congress.
The grounds for expelling a member association are: failing to fulfil financial obligations to the AFC; seriously violating its own statutes, codes, rules, regulations and standing orders or those of the AFC or FIFA; it ceases to be the legal football association in its own country; or it ceases to be a member of FIFA.
Sheikh Salman claimed Australia's hosting of the Asian Cup proves its legitimacy.
"It's been a great tournament and it's thanks to Australia, the FFA and the Local Organising Committee," he said.

Was an amazing night.
One of the endearing things will always be the feeling at end of normal time when with victory in sight the chant for Aussies went up the scarf were being waved Korea looked physically spent and them from out of nowhere the Koreans scored.
Everyone was on such a high and then flat as a tack
Can't believe ****s had the balls to do it again in ET though
The other endearing memory will be the first class beer shower I got when Troisi scored.
Was sitting next to a corporate box who were getting free piss. They covered half the stand when it went in and missed the rest of the game thanks to the Riot Squad removing them.

ABC scores ratings goals with Asian Cup final and Queensland election coverage
The Asian Cup final between the Socceroos and South Korea had an average TV audience of 1.8 million people on Saturday night, but the live coverage was seen by more than 5 million people overall.
The match, which the Socceroos won 2-1 in extra time, was broadcast live on the main ABC channel everywhere except Queensland (http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/queensland), which carried the state’s election results instead. Viewers in the sunshine state watched the match on ABC2.
With both the Asian Cup and the ABC’s “Queensland Votes” election night coverage, the ABC easily passed its commercial competitors to become the most-watched channel on Saturday.
The ABC network of ABC, ABC2, ABC3 and ABC News 24 had its highest share of audience since digital channels were introduced in 2008.
The ABC’s main channel and the ABC network were both No 1, with shares of 20.3% and 28.6% respectively.
“The ABC’s coverage of both the thrilling Asian Cup final and the election result in Queensland demonstrated our ability to cover multiple events of national and state importance across all platforms,” the ABC’s managing director, Mark Scott, told Guardian Australia (http://www.theguardian.com/football/australia).
“The Asian Cup final in particular brought many new viewers to the ABC and we are very proud of the results.”
The ABC’s election coverage reached 2.1 million viewers across ABC and ABC News 24, including 959,000 viewers in Queensland.
Queensland Votes on ABC and ABC News 24 achieved a combined metro and regional average audience of 466,000.
The Asian Cup semi-final between the Socceroos and the United Arab Emirates reached 3.1 million Australians nationally and the quarter-final between Australia and China reached more than 1.8 million people nationally. Reach means the number of people who tuned in at some stage and average refers to people who watched the entire broadcast.
The ABC’s head of sports and events, Justin Holdforth, said the Asian Cup had been a celebration of Australian culture, community and diversity.
“It’s been a privilege to be part of and we are immensely proud to have brought this landmark moment in Australian football to audiences throughout Australia, live and free-to-air and across ABC radio and iView,” Holdforth said.
There were 43,000 live streams of the Australia v South Korea match, plus an additional 12,600 catch-up plays of the first half via ABC’s iView catch-up TV platform.

Asia has the 2022 so by "FIFA rules" another Asian nation cannot host another WC until 2034.
2026
America have it nailed down as Europe and Asia can't host and South America seem to be putting all their eggs in the 2030 basket.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2693508/Uruguay-favourites-host-2030-World-Cup-USA-line-2026-tournament.html
2030
You would be correct in the prospect of Argentina/Uruguay WC
http://www.argentinauruguay2030.com/?m=1
Chile wants to join in on the bid also
http://m.firstpost.com/sports/chile-joins-argentina-uruguay-expressing-interest-host-world-cup-2030-1787593.html
2034
Would be between Asia and Europe as no other African nation other than South Africa has the resources, infrastructure or money to do it, the logistics of a joint African bid will not come together quite well either. Europe would more than likely have the edge due to Asia hosting 2022.
2038
So with Europe hosting 2034 Australia will have to convince Asia to back them and not China, Japan, Korea, India ect no easy feat.
But knowing how FIFA works the price of Ice will go through the roof and Antarctica will buy the bids.
I reckon Morrocco or Egypt could host it tbh.
Don't think Morrocco will be hosting anything anytime soon.
Don't think Morrocco will be hosting anything anytime soon.
I don't think Africa will be hosting it either anytime soon.
If it ain't security issues or health issues it is the reality that outside of Sth Africa none of the countries are stable or financially adequate to do it
