Schwarzer, Neill and Milligan were our best

I was unimpressed with Kruse despite a few good runs and Oar looked out of confidence in the first half

Honda and Kagawa really played us off the park

First time I have done this in years but well done to luca$h Neil.

Probably one of the main reasons (other than schwarz outstanding save in the first half) Japan relied on a penalty to score the only goal for them. Besides marshalling himself on the 18 yard box he defended superb and his distribution was slightly better than the long balls I am used to.

Og on the other hand i think is done.

Agree with militia on bresc blokes ability to open the game up is immense and passing game is so simple and smart at the same time.

Next game would have jedinak in for Milligan, both have the same ability in defence but jedinak will be able to offer something going forward as well which I didn't think Milligan did

Simplicity of the Mackay matter;
Don't play players out of position zullo in next game

Imo Japan with out Honda and kagagawa would be shit but I think everyone thinks that.

agree with basically all of this.

will add endo to the standout japanese players. particularly in the first half he was slicing & dicing us. if it wasn't for the work luca$h did, we would have conceded about 4 goals solely from endo's passing. and speaking of luca$h - man, best player out there last night. i am his biggest critic, and probably fumed more than anyone that he was included in the squad after his 3 games this year and general oldness. but he amazed me last night.

like i said in the no-mfkfc thread - bresc needs to be given a bit more freedom. he was relied on too heavily to defend last night, and particularly in the first half was made to look silly a bit. give him the ball when he's got a man close to him, give him a few runners darting away from him, and he's brililant. get him to do the defensive running of a 23 year old and he's past it. would love to see him in the hal. i really hope it's not ridiculous to think that hsg would at least enquire into him.

i usually love mckay, but he was so noticeably out of position and lost last night. it's simple, like rover said, just play a defender in that position. between mckay and og, we were a ticking time bomb to conceding. it was no surprise whatsoever that one of them two led to the goal. i wish lolger would have picked up on this in the first half and even put thwaite or someone out there, just to shut up shop.

now that lolger has seen that his instructions to oar to release the ball early in a cross-field switch wasn't working, i hope he gives him a lot more freedom. over in the anti-mfkfc thread we were all saying how lethal he looked when pushing past a man, and his goal was through sheer determination (and luck). let him loose.

all in all - don't forget that we deserved nothing from the game. if japan needed more than a draw, they would have felt robbed. we were diabolical except for brief moments, and the whole game was spent thinking it was only a matter of time before we conceded. whether we make it to the world cup or not, can't help but feel we'll perform even worse than we did in 2010 - and i will be highly embarassed. our goal shouldn't be JUST to qualify for the world cup, we should be aiming on jagging second place in the group. i don't think we have this mentality currently

do we still need to simply just win the next 2 or mathematically can we afford a draw/loss??

my understanding of it:

2nd Oman Played 7 GD -2 Pts 9
3rd Aust Played 6 GD 0 Pts 7
4th Jordan Played 6 GD -6 Pts 7

we play iraq and jordan. oman play jordan.

my understanding:
if oman beats jordan, we must win both (and regardless of scores will auto-qualify). if oman and jordan draw, we have to win at least one, do a bit of head maths with the goal differences, and it probably ties in with that winning game needing to be against jordan. if jordan beat oman, we need to beat jordan and work out our goal differences.

basically winning both will shit us in. beating jordan is the big one for us, and it's played before oman play jordan. potentially we can get through with a win and loss, but a lot has to work out for that to happen.

I disagree, we had a game plan. we carried it out very well. Do you expect us to go to japan and play a similar game as them? we would get thrashed!
I didnt think we were diabolical, i thought we were very effective! Sat deep, forced them to shoot from distance alot. We scored a goal (yes it was lucky but we got it) and really shwarzer only really had to make 2 real saves!
Just because we defended alot doesnt mean we were diabolical or didnt deserve anything!

And why didn't Tom Rogic come in instead of Vidosic

And why didn't Holger use the 2 subs he had left on the bench in the 87th and 89th minute to take the momentum out of the inevitable backlash that was to come after we had scored. Why wouldn't use the 2 subs to stop the game and give our defence a 45 second rest (x 2) to regroup and have a breather. Not to mention put out to fresh players to chase and close down in the middle of the park and help out for the last 6-7 minutes. ****ing coaching 101 that is.... We got pretty much what we deserved in the end, but once we scored we should have brought it home.

What I don't get about the whole McKay thing is that for the Asian Cup he was universally considered the best player of the tournament for us, playing in a bit of a roving midfield role similar to the one he'd played at Brisbane with Ange. So...why the fxxx are we playing one of our best players in a completely unsuitable role?

(fwiw I don't think he played badly last night, apart from the handball obvs)

PS As much as the media like to use the old hyperbole with many of Australia's games these days, Japan - Australia matches have turned into cracking fixtures imo. Always tight, huge passion in the players and fans.

Australia will:

secure at least a 5th Round play-off spot if they defeat Jordan AND Iraq do not defeat Japan
be unable to qualify directly if they lose to Jordan.

Iraq will be eliminated if:

they lose to Japan and Australia do not draw with Jordan, OR
they draw with Japan AND Australia defeat Jordan.

no idea if it's correct or not.

Jordan to notify FIFA after football coach detained at Melbourne airport

The Jordanian Football Association (JFA) says it is outraged that its national coach was detained by Customs officials at Melbourne's Tullamarine Airport.

Adnan Hamad was stopped at Customs yesterday after flying in with the team from New Zealand.

He was detained for several hours despite having a valid Australian visiting visa.

The JFA says other members of their delegation were also detained inside the airport despite having valid documentation.

The Jordanian embassy intervened in the process and Hamad was eventually given permission to proceed to the team's hotel.

The team is said to be so outraged they will contact the sport's governing body, FIFA, over the incident.

The Jordanians say Football Federation Australia (FFA) did not send a representative to meet them at the airport, according to protocol.

But the FFA says it had two representatives at the airport and it was an unfortunate incident involving Customs.

In a statement the JFA thanked the Jordanian embassy for helping the coach.

The FFA says it hopes the incident does not overshadow the crucial World Cup qualifier game between Australia and Jordan in Melbourne on Tuesday.

kudos to Customs. :lulz:

Good to us see us finally playing these mind games - we are growing up in the football world.

If we can't win 3 out of our 8 games we don't deserve to qualify, therefore we must win both.

TBH - I don't think we deserve a spot and although I pray I am wrong, I very much doubt we will get maximum points over the two games.

In the media, the sky will then fall......

Favourite score on TAB is Australia 2-0, some juicy odds on Jordan

The reason they are at juicy odds is because they have little chance of winning. This team has been good at home and abysmal on the road. Even when we played them and they rolled us it was more our ineptness than their quality that seen them build up a 2-0 lead. FFS even Archie scored against them last time out. A fired up Socceroos on home soil should comfortably put them to the sword

If Socceroos don't win by 3-4 Holger should quit if he ain't lynched first

A draw tonight will put them on 6 points and a win V Socceroos will put them on 9 max
Austraila would finish on 10points with a loss and be ahead of them point blank Japan are long gone so the best they could hope for would be 3rd.

With Oman playing Jordan

An Omani win sees them on 12 points
A Jordan win sees them on 10 points
A draw would see Oman on 10 Jordan on 8

This would be still more than Iraqs max 9.

Iraq need to beat the Japanese tonight or they are GONE

Which makes me think straight away, what sort of team will Iraq send for a dead rubber if that's the case?

Was working tonight and elected to watch from the 60th minute live and seeing Luca$h getting his first Intn'l goal was pricless...so was the
inane bitchin' from their defender. Wtf was he whining about? Couldn't believe he was out jumped by Neill for the ball?

The reason they are at juicy odds is because they have little chance of winning. This team has been good at home and abysmal on the road. Even when we played them and they rolled us it was more our ineptness than their quality that seen them build up a 2-0 lead. FFS even Archie scored against them last time out. A fired up Socceroos on home soil should comfortably put them to the sword

If Socceroos don't win by 3-4 Holger should quit if he ain't lynched first

It is always good to be proved right:yay:

^ Most impressive thing about Rogic was his confidence.

That is also the key thing with Kruse I feel. You can see the potential of him in the NT, but so far I think he's played very nervous and safe. Tonight I think he started in the same way, but as he got more chances you could see his confidence grow, culminating in his nutmeg goal.

Similar situation with Oar, Oar and Kruse will both be real forces once they become comfortable at this level.

even though qualifying through asia is better in every respect for the socceroos, these games lack the romance of the once-every-4-years, all-or-nothing home and away ties against a team that we are not expected to beat.

i'm not saying i want to go back to the old system, just saying that we will never play another game that feels as big as 2005 against uruguay or 1997 against iran unless we make a world cup semi-final.

Respect to the people trying to get something started.

Observations last night were:
1. All the people in active support looked nothing like the people we see in the BWB or Yarraside.
2. A lot of the chants ARE similar to those done by certain clubs e.g the Sydney FC Crocodile Rock one. I know it's been around for the NT for a while now, but it still felt weird hearing that sung by a Melbourne crowd.

Just my observations anyway, not trying to criticise anyone's efforts but there are obvious issues with NT support that still need to be worked through. It'll be interesting to see what it's like in Sydney this week.

Good luck with it all. If people want to make it work, it will. Good first up effort last night and a something that I'm sure will improve. I agree with what they are doing and the maturity shown by people leaving loyalties to one side can only help the game grow IMO

just my opinion but.
the noise in the stadium last night was awesome. the active support wasnt all that loud and I dont think much of the average joe fans were joining in with them.
the noise came from the fact that the match meant something and the home team played some good, fast football that was exciting to watch.
the "nippon/green and gold" chant was either a bit lame (if they were knocking it off) or quite funny (if it was a piss take).
also the active bay is quite a bit back from the field at Etihad so maybe it didnt help.
good on them and hope they get heaps more people wanting to join in next time.

Iraq stars pull out of Socceroos clash

Iraq's preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Australia at ANZ Stadium on Tuesday has been rocked by the withdrawal of two of its iconic star players.

Captain Younis Mahmoud and midfield orchestrator Nashat Akram informed the Iraq Football Association (IFA) of their decision not to travel with the squad, which arrived in Sydney on Thursday evening, after the 1-0 qualifying loss to Japan in Doha and did not travel with the the squad.

The Japan result eliminated the 2007 Asian Cup winner from World Cup contention. The World Game has learned is understood the team is rife with internal divisions on the eve of a match the Socceroos must win to secure one of four automatic places in Brazil.

The national team has gone through more than six months of upheaval since its Brazilian coach Zico resigned from his post in November 2012 in the fallout from an acrimonious pay dispute with the IFA.

Youth coach Hakeem Shaker was appointed on an interim basis before ex-China boss Vladimir Petrovic took control in February. It is believed that many within the side have serious reservations about the direction the team is being taken.

The side has played two international matches in the past six months – one against a Syria and the other against an understrength Liberia - before consecutive World Cup qualifying losses against Oman and Japan sealed its World Cup fate.

Iraq supporters have taken to Facebook over the past few days to launch a series of attacks on the IFA administration and it’s understood those protests could be replicated in Sydney on Tuesday.

While Nashat, playing in his homeland, will continue his club career, Younis has retired from both club as well as national duty.

Both were key contributors to the 2007 Asian Cup title and their departure brings to an end what is widely regarded to as one of the golden ages of Iraqi football.

Alaa Abdul-Zahra, who was sent off in the loss to Japan, as well as one of the backup goalkeepers, also failed to travel to Australia meaning Petrovic will rely heavily on a young and inexperienced squad.

Up to five members of the country’s youth side, which qualified for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, are expected to be involved against the Socceroos

Found this poorly researched piece on TWG site tonight.

As if facing a must-win encounter in front of more than 80,000 expectant fans wasn't daunting enough.

For many of the Socceroos a victory against Iraq on Tuesday represents their last chance to play in a World Cup.

Australia's most capped player Mark Schwarzer, who would be 41 come next year's showpiece in Brazil, would become the oldest ever player at a World Cup should the Socceroos triumph over world No.98 Iraq at Stadium Australia.......bla bla bla
Alarm bells started ringing when I read that statement. It didn't take long checking a few birthdays on Wiki and thinking of Peter Shilton and Roger Milla off the top of me head. FMD, who writes this shit? Schwarzer will be 41 on the 6th October this year so yes, 41y 8mths next year if we make it and he's selected. Roger Milla born 20 May 1952 was 42y 2 mths in USA 1994. Peter Shilton born 18th Sept 1949 was 40 and 9 months at Italia 90. It will make Schwarzer the oldest goalkeeper in WC history and the oldest Aussie player by far as well, but not "the oldest player ever".

militiamon
16-06-2013, 11:03 PM
Good call Retro. Seems that that probably just got that line from this Herald Sun article:

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/football/socceroos-goalkeeper-mark-schwarzer-adopts-strict-meat-and-veg-diet-in-bid-to-become-world-cups-oldest-player/story-fni2wcjl-1226660953356

Which has the headline:

"Socceroos goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer adopts strict meat and veg diet in bid to become World Cup's oldest player"

but confusingly, if you read the article itself it says exactly what you pointed out:

If he plays at next year's World Cup he will become the oldest keeper to do so, overtaking illustrious trio Pat Jennings, Peter Shilton and Dino Zoff, and the second oldest player after Camerunian Roger Milla.

And a quick check of the FIFA stats confirms this:

Newy Herald can get knotted - posted a comment this morning that 2005 was the greatest atmosphere in Australian sport and nights like tonight show why this is the worlds greatest game.

Bogan moderators must have deemed it offensive - it's not there !

glad we've really managed to put together a good pitch for this game.

not sure what to say about this performance so far.

Terrible. Worst of last fortnight. Kruse peaked last week it seems. Wilkshere can't cross to save himself. We rush our final cross when the option to bring it in and cut back exists. Effing round with it at the back.

But Cahill scores after 4 mins it's totally different game. Needs Thompson. And Rogic

do you have a bug in my house? :D

yep, creativity required. holman off, rogic on at 60 minutes. thompson on at 70 minutes for either kruse or oar.

i would also say nervous and anxious.

After tonight, Rogic should start ahead of Holman. We also need a left and right back. Wilkshere isn't cutting it anymore and McKay isn't a left back

none of that. save it for tomorrow morning. i'll willingly join in then. :)
