If this happens and they manage to keep burns all of a sudden we have a very competitive squad.
Hesky, Griff, Burns, Taggart, Mooy... who plays where? It doesn't matter, i like the sound of it and would give me hope of having a serious go in the semis!

It must be difficult for players that don't have families. I mean when you want to earn more money you can't say "I have a family to think about" and when you don't like the style of football the manager wants you to play you can't say "I want to spend more time with my family "so as to justify a move back home.
Can't blame Ono for wanting to leave though. WSW play the most unattractive 1950's style shit in the league.

Tbf Rogic would add the creativity we need in midfield. I'd rather win with a gypo then lose every week without one

Obviously been reading the Ryan Griffiths play book.
If Middleby was McBreen's CEO, McBreen would have been taken to Sydney airport in a stretch hummer driven by Biraz, had Griff & Heskey as stewards on the plane, Middleby giving him footrubs the entire flight. All paid for by the club.

Yep, playing with CC. Apparently ban finishes Feb 15, although he mentioned how awesome CCM have been and that he's been talking to Moss and looks likely to go back there if he gets back to "a-league form". I use that term loosely as I'm not sure if he's ever reached a-league form.

With Premy and co on this.
Will not begrudge him of the right to act it up, but 'sif have sympathy for him. Has worn the yellow jersey with pride for several seasons now, unacceptable.
Edit: Also will call him out for being a grub in this instance as well. I can remember him complaining last season about not getting a new contract offer from the Mariners. They put their faith in him for another season despite his age, but then goes and jumps ship at the first chance he gets to repay his loyalty.
That's not how his contract last year happened at all.
He asked Arnie what he needed to do to get a new one, arnie said 10 goals. McBreen gets golden boot, arnie holds up his side of the deal.
There was a period where Arnie wasn't giving him a contract after he'd reached the 10

Only thing is I would want it to be for more than just till the end of this season, otherwise it's pretty pointless.
so your fine with signing a player on a multi year deal before we even know who is coaching us next year, I think it could create a whole new GVE type affair of not his players, no squad or salary cap to move, does not suit my system etc etc
also as its the end of a world cup cycle I'd like to save some cap & squad spots for visa and marquee spots for any players who might miss out & may be up for a move after the world cup

Tommyjet
02-02-2014, 12:59 PM
Carney is shit overseas and at international level but is more than adequate(compared to others we have) at a-league level. Although he cops a lot of stick at left back I'd put him there and leave goody up the wing, with kew inside carney there shouldn't be too many errors. He will get caught out getting too far forward and this is where we need kanta who is good at reading who is out of position and slotting in, zads will have to do it in the meantime.

even if he does, he'll bring international experience, will definitely be good for A-League level (he did decent in MLS which is better than A-League) and will be better than Gallaway and may benefit Gallaway by passing on some knowledge.

no way would i play a player of carneys quality (in the a league) at LB, i would play him at LM.
goodwin has been better the last 2 weeks but still no where near as good as he was at the start of last year.
seriously don't understand why they don't just play him at LB, he is more than fit enough to get back up and down the field and a player of carneys quality would have him in good positions when he received the ball.

This is EXACTLY what I was thinking!
I actually thought Gallaway looked a little distracted on the weekened, and this explains it for me.
I remember how good Carney was at LM/AM for Sydney back in the day. He was terrific.
But I can't help but notice how much lack of playing time/changing of the league/etc made Nathan Burns, who killed the league back in the day, not even convince his own supporters that he was quality this year. So particularly seeing as though Carney is older, has had limited playing time, etc - I'd be giving him runs at LB before "rushing" him into attacking positions.

I don't know about Mooy. He can't defend like Kanta, he doesn't cover as much ground as Rubz, and he doesn't have the mongrel of Brillante.
Moreover, Mooy rarely scores and he's not exactly a playmaker in the mould of a number ten either. His passing game is ok but it's not great.
The fact that WSW are not throwing coin around to keep him suggests they don't rate him.

I think he's more comfortable on the ball than any of the midfields we you listed Dunster, and probably better as well in terms of passing / vision.
Having said that he doesn't really fit a well defined role, he's definitely not a box to box midfielder as he doesn't have anywhere near the workrate of Kanta / Zad however I do think you underestimate his tackling etc.
He's closer to a playmaker but doesn't really suit that either.
Although I do like him as a player I see him as a luxury player and don't really want him in our team.
Edit: don't think he suits our style or our philosophy
Edit 2: having said that, I'd take Mooy over Kanta.

Lol... clearly haven't been a Jets fan for long :lulz:
Seriously though, we've been completely unJets like the last month or so. GVE gone, Griff back, Carney signing then being seemingly and realistically linked with some half decent players. The world really must be ending.
Been a newcastle team fan since the early 90's and still waiting for us to target the players we should be. Griff and carney were definitely unjets like signings.
You do realise that you must now sacrifice her to Griffo to now pash her (or whatever it takes) and exorcise the demons
Don't start me on that.. She knows a lot of the Jets (dated one of the ex players for several years), so she laughs at my fanboy following and keeps trying to shut me down with "Oh that guy was the sleaziest guy ever.. So-and-so, he was a nice kid.. No, that guy is a fvckwit" etc etc..

^ Would be a good replacement for Heskey.
Actually anyone would be a good replacement for Heskey at the moment. Soz Buddha.
Stein would be a great signing. Clinical finisher. A modern day Juho Makela - The Surgeon (sup, q).
But, we have no players to service a Stein (or a Berisha, or anyone like that). He would look rubbish if he came to us and we had the same players backing him up.
Also, in b4 the "Bridges could do it".
----------------Biraz-----------------
Neville--Regan--Chapman--Carney
--------------Kanta------------------
Hoole---------#10---------Goodwin
-----------Griff---Taggart-----------
For next season, I'm picturing something like the above may/could work. Assuming Griff & Carney are still around then. And assuming Kew isn't.
Having a brief look at sfcu (and assuming what I looked at was up to date), the players I'd be keen on us attempting to sign who are off contract would be:
Brattan
McKay
Spiranovic
Finkler
And IMO none of them are realistic targets.

I came to the conclusion last night that we are probably the least attractive option for an off-contract player. We still have a young developing squad. We have had zero success in the last 3+ seasons (being the elast successful club over this time).
Two things can bring the players here - $$$ or the coach. $$$ Are going to be an issue.
For me it comes down to who we appoint as the next coach. The next coach needs to be able to attract these players OR get the current crop playing above their level and develop them further.
I came to the conclusion last night that we are probably the least attractive option for an off-contract player.
:rof: agreed, hence why I consider no players to be realistic transfer targets.
We're good for players who have run out of options, are down on form/luck/opportunities elsewhere, etc.
We also seemingly have no-to-little players who can attract players. Look at when ljubo was here - he got a bunch of players over. Petkovic or whoever at SFC has dragged half of Serbia over.
I've come to a conclusion that I draw routinely - we need to splurge on Bresciano

When Hoole and Goodwin learn to cross, yes. Until such time we need a top quality winger.
When Hoole and Goodwin learn to cross, yes. Until such time we need a top quality winger.
In your opinion, which current HAL wingers CAN cross?
And if you were given control of the transfers, which winger(s) would you sign from where (doesn't necessarily need to be from HAL)? Let's say you have the option of: medium-pay salary cap player, high-pay salary cap player, australian marquee, international marquee.
russjaybee

How is it so hard to put in a decent cross ffs.
A-league players that come to mind that can cross ...
- Cassio
- That shit idiot from sydney who reckoned he was a fk specialist? Came from a state league team? I can't remember his name now. Played on the right.
Actually can't think of many decent crossers lol.
Rojas / Thompson were putting in some pretty bloody good balls to each other, most of them on the deck though.

Bratten can take a decent free-kick.
russjaybee
25-02-2014, 01:33 PM
Bratten is a good passer but he's not a winger. In reality I can't remember many teams that have converted lots of headers in the a-league.
For some reason reminded me of old mate Coveny, much love. He's managing Victree Youth team apparently.
None of the strikers on our books at the moment could finish like this (except of course jg).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9ZuKilph0o
Also, how bad is the defending rof.
So really, there's barely any HAL players who can cross.
Kewell can, Franjic can, not many others.
We apparently want better wingers - there's barely any wingers out there nowadays. A high&wide man is more inclined to beat a man and run in, or cut back out and play in a close-proximity central midfielder. Goodwin is great at the first, Hoole is great at the second. They'll only get better with age, too.
Possibly the only out-and-out winger in the HAL is Hersi - who I don't necessarily rate as a crosser either. Plus he's old. And too busy making movies with Tom Hanks.
russjaybee
25-02-2014, 01:53 PM
Rof.
Goodwin should be an excellent crosser of the ball as according to everyone he's got great technique on his left foot.
He just needs to attack the by-line and cross more often, though he was woeful against Sydney. Give him time imo, during GvE's reign I'm almost certain the wide players were given a mandate to cut inside and re-cycle the ball rather than hit the line and whip in a cross.

Umm not knocking Bresciano but feel the play maker we need should have younger fitter legs. Bresciano would be a great signing if complimented with another playmaker though. No point for a club in our situation of mediocrity putting our faith all on the legs of a bloke who is not far from retirement and likely to break down. Can just see us signing this bloke and Rd 5 arrives and we are looking promising and then he breaks down and we are back to the mediocrity we are accustomed to as we have no other options.

And when he gets injured at his age then what??
Back to Caravella/Zads and their creativity??
We need more than just Bresciano and need another creative outlet in the middle of the park
ie We need a few signings in this area not just one

You can't just not sign someone because you think they might get injured. Any player is prone to injuries.
But I do agree one creative player is not enough. Look at Brisbane, victory, Adelaide etc all have more than one creative type or player capable of stepping in to do the job.

Yeh i cant see him being marquee at heart. They have already said they wouldnt be getting "big names", they would be getting the right player.
But i also agree that there is a good chance heart will be able to fit him under the cap. Home town, good relationship and already trains with them when he needs to. I have no doubt that they would be able to work something out to get him.
Lets face it, our big new creative signing will probably be someone like Cernak.... another club hopping no hope!

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but surely the decision by Kewell to walk out on Victree the other year after Ange had just arrived and went out of his way to design a system at Victree to best accommodate Harry's talents was probably the death knell for any WC involvement he had even if it happened 18 months ago.
Sure Ange may never admit it but he may well have had an axe to grind over that which is easy to use with his NT role now
Admittedly Harry came back to HAL to have a shot at making Brazil and he would have had no idea Ange would end up with the gig and Holger get the arse
