So i'm toying with the idea of establishing a History of Football in Newy website, a place for people to go to see how we've been represented over the years on the national stage, with the plan further down the track to have it spread to lower levels of football too.

I'm 95% sure i've located electronic copies of all KB/Rosebud match day programs from 1978-1985 and also possibly videos from of most/all KB, rosebud, breakers jets games from 1980.

What i'm looking for is any photos, footage, newspaper articles, stories you may have from attending national league games seeing any of the teams to of represented Newy.

If you know of anyone who has some history please let me know.

Yeah thanks Gav, that is where i am getting the match day programs from. Only problem is he has 5-6 libraries listed as having a copy of his completed research project on usb but the only library i've found that actually has a record of ever receiving it is the National Library in Canberra, so might have to make a trip down.

Newcastle Raiders were just KB United as far as i know. All the NSL teams had to choose a nickname. I've got a feeling that Sydney City were called the Sydney City Slickers??

Too kind Gary. Thanks though.

The go-to document for getting a handle on the deep history of the game in Newcastle is Phil Mosely's thesis, A SOCIAL HISTORY OF SOCCER IN NEW SOUTH WALES 1880–1957

This is the first para in the 2nd chapter on the Newcastle district.

Soccer in the Newcastle District had been organised by the Northern British FA since 1887. By 1900 there were fifteen teams playing in official competitions and by 1909 twenty-eight teams. In 1910 the Wallsend and District British FA was formed and took over from the Northern British FA. In its first year the new body raised the District’s number of soccer teams to fifty-two. Four years later, the Wallsend and District British FA was itself superseded by the Northern District British FA. This change achieved some positive and immediate results but, due to World War I, it was not till after 1918 that soccer’s popularity in the Newcastle District climbed rapidly. By 1922 official competitions were catering for sixty-three teams, ranging from adults to under sixteens. School teams numbering forty-four were registered in under fifteen, fourteen and twelve age groups.

Here's a couple of very early references to football in Newastle from the digital newspaper archive in Trove in the National Library

http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/108007687

This is from all places the Melbourne Argus in 1887: (http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/7867391)

The final match of the season under the British Association rules was won on Saturday by the Hamilton Athletics (Newcastle), who defeated Granville, the former champions, by 4 goals to 1.

This is from 1888 (http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13692754) when Victoria defeated the combined Northern district "3 points to 1"!

This is from 1888

A new club has been formed at Burwood, near Newcastle, to be called the Burwood Swifts. Tbe style of game to be played will be the British Association. This game seems to be gaining in popularity. I believe we now have five Northern teams formed, viz., Hamilton, Minmi, Burwood, Wallsend, and Greta, with every prospect of others joining. The number of players required to .compose a team-viz., 11- causes less difficulty in organisation than in the Rugby or Australian game.

Trove is a marvellous resource for anyone wanting to research the game's history. If you are interested get in and have a look around. But be careful as it's addictive!

If anyone wants more suggestions just ask.

Cheers

But to be stalked by Ian Syson..... This is awesome.

Everyone should read his log, the guy is ****ing legend, especially based in Melbourne where afl run the show, he just quietly goes about the business of demonstrating how wonderful our game is and how rich the history is despite what the sun herald want people to think!

There is a heap of archived stuff at Newcastle Library on microfiche compiled by Harry Hetherington - written history as well as newspaper articles. Harry Hetherington has done a mountain of work looking into the football history in our region and is a NNSWFF life member and FFA Hall of Famer.

Back when the squadron was starting I reviewed a lot of it to put on the website. I've got bits and pieces of extracts and things like club formation dates, but it's all there at the Library if you want it.

Pretty sure there was some kind of interview with the original Minmi Rangers, many years after the first game was played.

There was all sorts of stats about people from this region who had played representative football at state and national level in the very early days.

No worries guys. Newcastle not my strong suit and I was just offering some starting points that I'm aware of. I would be interested in some links, especially to pre 1887 material. Mosely is of the opinion that your region and parts of Sydney are the cradle of the game in oz. There's a lot still to be discovered and recorded about your region.

Having said that I can only assume Rosebuds might have been formed by English expats as opposed to Scottish.

My goal is to have a football museum up and running in the area by 2020, in the meantime i am trying to acquire as much as i can to go on display and also want to have before the start of next season (2015/16) a website outlining every national league / cup game that Newcastle has played in with Results, crowd figures, match reports, video highlights and also scanned electronic copies of the matchday programs.

A big job but it will be worth it in the end and if i can atleast get it online sooner rather then later it will hopefully save it from being lost forever.

Have procured a very rare piece of KB paraphernalia today. 2 in fact! Have told Todd about it and he's already called me a bastard

Had an SMS from a notable type who was heavily involved with KB in the day and was the instigator of the Canns Bakery KB cards promotion.
SMS read "I have a couple of Canns Bakery souvenirs here, Mrs # is threatening to throw out! Got a good home for them?"
I was there in under 5 minutes...
The full set of cards on the big guide card I expected (Signed by Peter Willis to the dudes daughter I think) but the empty guide card and the master sheet of cards he gave me were eye poping.
I have a few complete card sets glued onto guide cards and 1 mint set of individual cards in a photo album but this master sheet must be the only one in captivity!
Has players laid out 6 wide by 4 deep for the 24 card set. Logo top right 2 cards. Green spill outline and guillotine cut marks. Bottom of card has yellow and magenta splotches.
Rear of card has 2KO Music logo on the back of every card plus more guillotine cut marks. Worth framing!

Anyone know where I could get such large items scanned? (For Todd's FB Page) The bigger guide card is ***mm W x 428mm H. The smaller player master sheet is 410mm W x 425mm H.

Another intem that came with that lot was a 240 x 380 yellow pennant. Red 1979 above the Black/Red KB logo (seen here (http://www.newcastlematchdayprogramsrahs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=146629976) on Danial B's page), Red writing under that with P.S.L Season. Looks like something that might have been given to opposition teams at KO's or just a supporters item.

Jets wore all white.
Ned Zelic's first game....went off injured.
JP De Marigny was coach.
CC won 4-2 on penalties.
Reddy had a blinder in goal - BK was on the bench for the Jets.
Parisi hit the post.
Breeze was referee and didn't produce a red card for "the incident".
Milicic missed first pen, dunno who missed the other.
Andrew Clarke's pen hit both posts and the keeper before going in.
Mrjda scored the winner.
I realised Gypos were c***ts.....

I think Nicky took a pen but not sure.

Had a thought - if BK was on the bench in the 2005 pre-season, only Archie would have been with a club longer now Hutch is gone?

Jets played MV a few weeks before.

2-1 victory over Sydney FC. Milicic and Johnson score early and Yorke comes off the bench to get one back late. Corbo and Corica (I think - not got my info in front of me) sent off. Corica (straight) for bad challenge on Bridge and Corbo for the ensuing melee (2nd bookable)

In 34 seasons of National League participation Newcastle have won in the first round 12 times.

Of those 12 times there have only been 3 occasions where Newcastle have scored 4 or more goals and on each time a Newcastle player has scored a Hattrick.

1996-97 Newcastle Breakers 6 vs West Adelaide 1. Scorers Bennet 62, 67, 69, 72, Thomas 78 and Sprod 80

1997-98 Newcastle Breakers 4 vs West Adelaide 2. Scorers Zane 9, 11, 25pk, Bennett 79.

2017-18 Central Coast Mariners 1 vs Newcastle United Jets. Scorers O'Donovan 9, 28, 38, Champness 81, D Petratos 90.

Roy O'Donovan's Hattrick is only the 12th in Newcastle's 900+ game history.

The Hunter's Hattrick Heroes are below.

1979 Rd 26 - Boden
1982 Rd 20 - Johnston
93-94 Rd 11 - Spink
95-96 Rd 20 - Halpin
96-97 Rd 1 - Bennett
97-98 Rd 1 - Zane
97-98 Rd 17 - Tollenaere

There's a few more things to come, I just have to work on the formatting when I get some time.

I've sent these on to the club, because they should be on the "History" page of the website but it's still to go up and it needs to be captured somewhere - so here it is!

Happy 40th Birthday - Newcastle KB United and National representation of this fine
city in the Philips Soccer League and other leagues beyond.

It was an honour and privilege to attend the luncheon last Friday. I was seated between
Graham Heys and Con Mitsios. Other legends a the table were Craig Mason, David 'Jonah' Jones,
Peter Willis as well as former directors of various club incarnations David Brown and Eddie Boards.

40 years ago today Newcastle KB United played Sydney City Hakoah and lost 1-4. The crowd according to OzFootball records (http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/NSL/1978/Round01.html)
was 15,067. Kenny Boden scored the club's first goal - a pen.
It's taken 40 years but Saturday night felt like we were back to something of those halcyon days.
May they long continue - with full community support this time.

Hey ToddGB (or anyone else for that matter),

I'm hoping you can help me. I am looking for the squad numbers for the players in season 2000/01, 2001/02, 2002/03, 2003/04.

I am hoping in your match-day programs you could send me a few photos of such line ups with the numbers? I'm hoping they have them!

I need them to determine player cap numbers for the club as I close the data gap with the Newcastle United NSL years

Cheers for anyone's help. This is what I have found so far - https://www.worldfootball.net/teams/newcastle-united-jets/2001/2/ and clearly there's some gaps for each season, plus I want to confirm against an additional source
