their young guys are so good they're being offered contracts overseas. lucky GVE had the forethought to pick one's that aren't as good.

list of players whose contract expires at the end of april next year, that are free to talk to other clubs. who would you take? (note: is from a herald sun article. may not be fully accurate - ie it says virgili is open but he signed a new contract recently)

i wouldn't mind any of:
fyfe
neumann
cassio
nichols
paartalu
bozanic
mcbreen (bring him home)
rogic
fred
garcia
grella
kalmar
tadic
m.thompson
rojas
miller
bvdb

and from our squad i'd be keeping:
tiago
heskey
ribeiro
solid
jobe
rubez

Ok having looked at this list from a few months ago, I'd attempt to sign:

Watson
Ferreira or Neumann
Fyfe
Hingert
Meyer
Garcia
Gibbs

Some have prob signed new contracts since. Can't recall

How many foreign spots can a club have? Accord to the TWG line ups sydney have 8 to our 5. Also why do we have Vrteski taking a spot? People calling for Bridges head should axe the rookie keeper first.

militiamon

Us:

Ritter
Bridges
Bernardo
Heskey

Vrteski is Australian.

Sydney:

Fabio
Yau
Lovrek
ADP
Bosschaart (Tiago = injury replacement for Bosschaart)

McFlynn and Abbas are both Australian citizens.

i'm genuinely sick of feeling like we have to sign blokes, because i'm always majorly let down when we don't sign them, but ffs he is one of the best cbs in the hal i've seen. probably hasn't had the greatest year this year, but could be great for us. would love to see him partner chapman

Played for Sheffield Wednesday youth academy. Scored an absolute cracker of a goal last season or the season before, think it won goal of the year. Will see if I can find it.

Ok, so it was the youth academy goal of the season. Second goal in this clip. Aww god that music is awful.

Sydney once again. Now it's official, I have renewed my contract with Sydney FC for one more year. That's what I wanted, and that's what the club wanted. My choice, our choice.

I would like to thank all who have shown their interest towards me, all those who have considered a possibility to approach me, but I still have a lot to do in Sydney and I don't want to stop.

I'm grateful to those who wanted me in the first place and wanted to keep me here for another year, I would like to thank the owners of the club and its President, Sydney FC management and all our fans: I can't wait to celebrate the renewal under the Cove with my "tongue out" and Sky Blues number 10 jersey on.

I'm happy to stay in Australia, and my choice apart from football career includes also my life and my family: I just love being here, we all feel at home and really welcomed by this extraordinary country.

I said that this choice wasn't based only on football, but it doesn't mean that football isn't on the first place. I am a football player and a sportsman: it is my profession and my passion. I feel that I still have a lot to give to my team and that's the main reason I want to keep on playing, I want to give my best, to face new challenges and to win.

And sorry if I don't have much time to think about next year… We are in the middle of Championship , on our way to play off, my team mates and technical staff are concentrated on reaching our targets. My main concern at this moment is about our next match.

C'mon Sky Blues!

Some interesting general HAL responses posted on twitter.

DG: Coasties have target set of FIVE THOUSAND members :gent: FFA want to help them reach that.
DG: No expansion for the next few years (at least)
DDB: We are working towards having professional referees (does this mean FT whistle blowers? Whoo)
DG: Cup style competition in 2014 (believe it when it happens...)
DG: Working on a model to allow clubs to attract more sponsors (not sure what the Q was)

Everything else is CCM crap that I don't care about.

Other stuff...

DDB: looking at possibility of playing more NYL games before HAL fixtures.

Hilariously, gypos are going to get a commemorative shirt put together when they reach FIVE THOUSAND members. Dreaming big.

Rather ironic Smurfs are doing this.

At the Socceroos game last week in Sydney what was noticeable outside the ground was the WSW tent and the WSW soccer field for the kids to have a kick.

They don't have much width in midfield... looks like it is going to be Bojic and whoever their left back is. (Marc Warren going by wiki...).

pv4
28-06-2013, 01:19 PM
They just signed Warren, but I can't see him starting ahead of Rhyan Grant who was excellent at LB for them when he played there this year.

Emerton said the other day he wants to play more centrally aswell, so their wide workhorse even doesn't want to play wide. They'll probably end up with a Vieira/Makelele-days-France-esque horseshoe in the middle, and as you said get their width from the wide backs.

Would have to assume that if they haven't already used it (and it actually still exists...), Gameiro would be their junior marquee.

If you compare SFC's squad to Melbourne's a couple of seasons back, it still isn't quite as impressive imo, at least not in terms of the big names.

Melbourne Victory 2011-12 Big Names
Harry Kewell
Archie Thompson
Carlos Hernández
Jean Carlos Solórzano (after his outstanding season for Brisbane)
Marco Rojas
Isaka Cernak (when he was rated one of the hottest prospects after playing for the Fury)
Adrian Leijer

+ later arrivals of Ante Covic, Mark Milligan and Julius Davies

Sydney FC 2013-14 Big Names
Alessandro Del Piero
Nick Carle
Brett Emerton

He was as big as Gameiro tbf. He'd just come off the back of a wonder season with Wellington. It turned out he had a rubbish season that year, but that was due to not having a coach more than anything else (and didn't change the preseason expectations at all).

What the Thomas and pv4 said. He had a huge amount of hype around him after his performances for Wellington, he was one of the hottest prospects in the league alongside Halloran imo.

Overall the quality of the squad MV assembled was far better imo (at least on paper), but I'd bet SFC are operating at a similar squad salary to them.

Maclaren a very good signing, Perth also a chance to pick up either Ryan Williams or Ryan Edwards on loan which would give them a very good youth brigade blended in with smeltz, burns and co.

Konstantinidis goes alright, was meant to play Greek super league last season but team he signed for crashed financially and got relegated, 190 cm skilful winger/striker.

That would mean 2012/13>>>> 2013/14>>>> 2014/15.

Cooper meanwhile, joins the Jets on a two-year deal after playing six games for Gold Coast United in 2011/12.

Was originally signed for the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons. So it's a one-year add-on, and basically lets him know that he's got this season and the one after to actually do something

EDIT: Didn't even fully appreciate how young he is though, tbh. He's 18 now, he'll be 20-21 when his contract expires. He has a long way to go - hopefully he's the goods!

THEY might look graceful with a ball at their feet, but Perth Glory players were decidedly out of their depth today when turning their hands to pole dancing.

The entire Glory squad had a lesson at Bobbi’s Pole Studio, just a stone’s throw from their home ground nib Stadium.

While diminutive winger Adrian Zahra showed some talent, most of the players struggled to replicate the graceful example set by their instructors.

Glory coach Alistair Edwards said the exercise would help build the players’ core strength.

“You can do a lot of stuff on the park, which is going extremely well, but we thought we’d mix it up and it’s great to see the boys laughing and working hard as well," Edwards said.

“It’s core stability work, a lot of stretching. We’ve got a long season ahead of us and these type of things are great from bonding as well. To mix it up is great because it freshens things up."

Glory skipper Jacob Burns said the players found pole dancing tough on their bodies.

“I’ve got a whole new respect for pole dancers and how strong they really are because they weren’t many of us that could actually do any of that," Burns said.

“I think a few of the boys have pulled up sore to be honest. It’s tremendous for the core strength and something different."

Meanwhile, star Glory striker Shane Smeltz is likely to miss at least the opening month of the A-League season after having surgery on his troublesome hip.

Smeltz is still two months away from running after having the operation a fortnight ago.

Edwards said the club had hoped rest would help Smeltz overcome his hip issue before a decision was made to send him for surgery.

“We thought that having the rest in the off-season would alleviate the problem, but it was still there," Edwards said.

“For short-term it’s not so good, but for long term it’s going to be better for Shane and for the club."

Barbarouses joins Melbourne Victory

New Zealand international Kosta Barbarouses will make a welcome return to the Hyundai A-League, after signing a three-year-deal with Melbourne Victory.

The 23-year-old forward was the leading scorer in Ange Postecoglou's all-conquering, championship winning Brisbane Roar side in 2010/11 and is currently an integral part of the New Zealand national team as it looks to qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Barbarouses joins Victory after he was released from the final year of his contract with Russian National Football League side FC Alania, however the Kiwi spent last season playing in Greece after securing a loan spell with Super League side, Panathinaikos.
Postecoglou said he was looking forward to working with Barbarouses again in 2013/14.

"We are delighted to have Kosta on board with us at Melbourne Victory and he will add even more attacking flair to our team this season," Postecoglou said.

"Kosta has plenty of pace, great technical ability and is a proven scorer, having netted 12 goals the last time he played in the A-League."

“While he’s only 23, he has made over 50 appearances at Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix, so he’s certainly aware of what is required to perform at this level, and I know he’s excited to be returning to the A-League.”

Barbarouses will link up with his new Melbourne Victory teammates on Monday.

Nominate Your Club for Jets Halftime Participation
August 21, 2013
It’s that time of year again where Club Football comes to an end and the A-League season starts to creep into the spotlight!
Once again Northern NSW Football would like to offer Under 8 and 9 teams the opportunity to participate in halftime entertainment at Newcastle Jets home fixtures during the 2013/14 A-League season.

To participate each club must:

■Bring exactly 16 players in the under 8 or 9 age group.
■Have one coach selected to organise participants on the day and liaise with Northern NSW Football Staff
■Nominate a preferred home game fixture to attend. (please note you can nominate several home fixtures- but you will only be asked to participate once)
■Wear the club’s uniform – jersey, shorts and socks. No Football Boots are to be worn by any participants by regulation of Hunter Stadium.
■All participants will need to fill out an approval form once your club has been confirmed a date. (sent with confirmation)
Participation in Newcastle Jets half time demonstrations is solely at the discretion of Northern NSW Football, we will endeavour to ensure most nominations have the opportunity to participate.

Due to high demand not all nominating clubs will be able to participate, so get your nomination form in as soon as possible.

http://www.northernnswfootball.com.au/index.php?id=10&tx_ttnews%5Byear%5D=2013&tx_ttnews%5Bmonth%5D=08&tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=2789&cHash=3cce28299cfc9ac8e1980aa87adf5ec3

Matt Thompson, the A-League's record-holder for appearances with 203, expects to find out next week whether his career in the competition will be extended with Wellington Phoenix.

Heartbroken Thompson gets on with it
Thompson to look overseas

Thompson, who was cut by Melbourne Heart at the end of last season, is in the middle of a trial with Phoenix after its coach, Ernie Merrick, contacted him through the player's manager last Friday.

After linking up with Phoenix in Sydney on Tuesday, Thompson played in the 2-1 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers at Seven Hills on Wednesday and will go around again for against the Jets in Newcastle on Saturday.

Thompson, normally a midfielder or defender, played further forward than he normally would against the Wanderers as Merrick took into account his lack of match practice.

"I got 25 minutes off the bench," Thompson said. "It was good. It was my first hit-out since the last game I played last season.

"I gave Ernie the heads up about what's been happening with me for the last few months and he put me in the number 10 position just to give me a bit of a free role and have a breather when I needed. It was a good hit-out.

"I think Ernie has in mind more of a defensive role in the midfield, if he does sign me, but I'm not sure what his plans are for the Newcastle game."

Thompson, who turned 31 last Sunday, has been living in Brisbane and training with Roar. That club had informed him some time ago that it wasn't in a position to offer him a contract, but was allowing him to work out with the team to keep fit.

He and his wife, Leslie, were staying with her family while awaiting the birth of their second child, and Thompson had been negotiating to continue his career with a club in Asia. He says a switch to Asia is still an option.

"I was doing a couple of sessions a week with the Roar," he said. "We've got the new baby now, so I've been pretty busy there as well. I've got a fitness base - I haven't put on 10 kilos or anything ridiculous like that - but the match condition obviously isn't there.

"Now that the games have started, three or four games in you find yourself pretty prepared, so I'm pretty happy with getting a run on Wednesday and I'm really looking forward to Saturday now. The camp wraps up after that game and I head back to Brisbane on Sunday."

Asked when he thought he might get a decision from Merrick on whether there was a contract for him with Phoenix, Thompson replied: "Ernie's a pretty straight-forward type of guy. I don't think he's going to waste my time and I'm not going to waste his, so I'm sure he'll have an idea of what he wants to do and will let me know when he's ready.

"He has obviously seen me play before and knows what sort of player I am - that's what got me to this situation in the first place. He would have wanted to have a close look at me play and see what sort of shape I'm in and how I fitted in with the other players.

"I tend to think that within a week after Saturday's game I'll be likely to hear something, but if he needs more time then that's no problem. It might turn out best for me to wait however long to see what he decides as well.

"This wasn't an opportunity I was going to pass on. If something comes from it, then, great."

Thompson said he was used to playing against the Phoenix players and was friends with some of them.

"I'm sure I'd have no trouble fitting into the group," he said. "I know Andrew Durante very well from playing with him at Newcastle. I've known him for 10 years or so and he's a good mate of mine.

"I've mixed with some of the others on nights out after games over there. They're a good bunch and it's comfortable being with them."

Thompson said he would continue to investigate the Asia possibility in the hope that either it or the Phoenix trial results in a deal.

"If both come up then I'm going to have to make a decision," he said. "But I'm not jumping forward to that stage. If it came to that it would be a good problem to have. Or there might be zero. I'm just waiting to see what happens."

I didnt know where to put this but fox sports has recently run a survey of 10,000 rugby fans and this was one of the questions.

36. Who is winning the publicity war?
AFL - 35.1 per cent
NRL - 30.3 per cent
A-League - 31.3 per cent
Rugby union - 3.3 per cent

And the giant is only just waking!

Exactly.... I could not see how Pain could be left out of a starting team and then you see Victory front third!
I still think he will get a heap of game time, he is my tip for young player of the year!

Yeah, it's tricky business when you think that Pain may get left out. It's a similar story with the Jerks - Goodwin may not get a run in a full-strength lineup!

It's hard to say what Ange will do - he loves Barb from the Roar days (and is an All-white), Troisi is a Socceroo so between striker, winger and AM you'd assume he'd be 100% starting. Archie is too pivotal to leave out. Ange loves Nichols from Roar. Milligan is a Socceroo. Finkler is the only player you'd say could be replacable, because he's just come off a big injury, but he is SUCH a good player when in the team and in a lot of Victory fans eyes is the first choice player out of anyone.

I really don't remember a stronger starting XI (and immediate bench options) in the HAL than this Victory team. As long as Contreras is quality, and between Galloway & Geria they find a RB mainstay, every single player could walk into any other HAL team with ease.

Yeh Finkler would be one of the first on the sheet... the short time at the start of last year he was leading the comp for assists by quite a way.

The only way Goodwin would not get a run in the starting XI at the jets is down to:

1 My crazy benching philosophy being employed
2 GVE doing his much vaunted team changes so the line up constantly changes and he forgot to put Goody in
3 Goodwin is injured or released on a free

Other than that you are talking out your arse if you think he won't be in the starting XI

My thoughts above were what I thought GVE would do - not what I would do.

Give myself free licence and I would have our lineup as:

------------------Biraz-------------------
Brillante--Jaliens--Chapman--Goodwin
-------------Zadkid--Caravella----------
-----------------Brown-------------------
----Taggart----Heskey-------Burns-----

Melbourne Heart sold to Storm owners for $9m

OWNERS of embattled A-League club Melbourne Heart are understood to have agreed to a $9 million sale of the club to the same company that owns NRL club the Melbourne Storm.

Rumours of the sale swept the sport on Saturday night as the Heart slumped to yet another loss, this time 3-1 to arch-rival Melbourne Victory in the Melbourne Derby at AAMI Park.

It was the club's 16th straight game without a win, keeping it rooted to the bottom of the table and putting further pressure on under-fire coach John Aloisi.

Aloisi is struggling to retain his job, but that has been overtaken by the events regarding Heart's sale.

The Storm is owned by New Zealand entrepreneur Bart Campbell, having bought the club off News Corp Australia (publisher of The Australian) in May.

Negotiations for the sale of the Heart have been going on since the start of the season. The Australian reported on October 10 that a sale to the Storm was imminent, though co-owner Peter Sidwell said at the time there "was no truth to the sale" on the eve of the season opener against Victory.

Sidwell did not reply to The Australian yesterday. Heart chief executive Scott Munn denied yesterday the club had been sold.

"We have been approached numerous times in the last year. We are on record saying there have been six or seven approaches, some that have been absolutely inappropriate, some that have been interesting," Munn said. "But the club is not for sale. We will continue to talk to people if they want to help grow the club, to invest in it and help improve the league. It would be foolish if we said we didn't."

Asked if the Storm had bought the club, Munn paused before giving a more considered answer.

"I am not privy to who owns the Storm. All the talk is about me and the club," Munn said. "As I said, we have had different approaches and the club's owners have a clear goal to deliver in the long term for the success of the Heart."

A former barrister in the New Zealand High Court, Campbell is regarded as a mover and shaker. His company manages All Blacks superstars Richie McCaw and Dan Carter.

The Heart, which is understood to be one of the few A-League outfits to turn a profit last season, was also the target of a huge approach from Victorian state league club and former National Soccer League giant South Melbourne, but that was turned down.

Meanwhile, Munn says Aloisi remains under pressure while taking a swipe at former Socceroo Mark Bosnich, now an analyst for Fox Sports.

Bosnich upset the Heart camp and Aloisi when he asked the coach during an interview after the match if he would consider resigning in the wake of the club's poor results. Aloisi hit back saying, "Bozza, you don't know me well then" and "I am not a quitter".

Munn defended Aloisi. "John is the ultimate professional and Bozza is paid to give an opinion, one that is not necessarily an educated one. But that's fine," Munn said. "Fox Sports is good for the game, but Bozza probably lost a bit of respect from some people after last night's silly statement."

Except he breaks most of the big stories well before others. His biggest downfall is being a gypo but he is usually spot on with his stories.

All the best to Paul Ifill in his recovery. He has been one of the best foreign players in the league's history but I don't expect we will be seeing him in the league again.

Also has an awesome name for puns.

sauce?

ridiculous that they wouldn't sell the licence to South Melbourne if they've gone and done this

Um I suppose you want some other reason other than they were not allowed to bring the ethnic clubs back to the top flight of football in this county

So the member is a short sighted racist.

Let's cover those ethnic clubs up.

And the holocaust while we are at it.

Wow that feels better.

how then did WSW get in?

:rof:

For ages when WSW first came in the FFA spent so much time & effort to tell people "they're not Croatian ffs". I think they've just given up now :rof: (but in saying that, pretty sure SFC have more cro players than WSW nowadays)

IMO it's only a matter of time before the FFA cave to the compelling case SMFC have put forward into letting them come back into the league. I welcome it - but I hope there's three Melbourne teams as opposed to replacing one.
