furns, do your thing and make this look proper like.

Loose.

Started purely because of some comedy on FB with someone saying "Arsenal lost their round 1 fixture to Aston Villa at the Emirates, and their now on the top of the table".

Bridges back, Burns shunted out to the right, Beard in for Zenon, probably never to be seen again.

I think we will bounce back this week. Perth looked good but that's two weeks on the road in a row.

2-1 win. Taggart and Goodwin. Nagai for them.

Burns needs to play wide, he is far too rusty to play in the middle, his touch sucks and he couldn't hold it up with his back to goal.

I think he's a much better player out wide anyway, just glory hunting in the middle, wanting to be "the number 10".
I'd play Goodwin and Burns as the wide players, Bridgey in behind Taggart.

Zadkid + ??? as the holders.

Was impressed by Huge in his first game, will be interested to see how he goes now.

We really lacked movement up top against Sydney, way too static when the backs / deeper mids had the ball.
The likes of Taggart / Goodwin / Chilli needed to be rotating a lot more instead of just staying in their channels.
Taggart is not Heskey, aka a target man. His strength SHOULD be in his pace and movement.

PS ffs it was painful watching KFC and Flores the gypo getting about on the weekend.

You could see this when Huge would step out of the backline and look for passes.

Smashed.
Utter embarrassment.
Deans and GVE to tell the press "there's still 25 games to go, we could end up on 75 points".
Middleby to do **** all.
Massive Bridges fight breaks out on the Foz to get us through to next week.

Optimistic. I think Sidnei and Nagai will destroy us out wide. Edwards surely knows how rubbish GVE is as weren't they both involved with AIS or Aus Youth at some point? Can see this being an embarrassing huge home loss.

The less game time Brown gets, the better.

FFS he's more hopeless than the rest atm. If you're gonna play Brown, why not Hoole? Or even Kale ffs?

Brown has shown 1 glimmer of skill in all the games he has played over the past season and a bit. 1 good part doesn't outweigh the amount of tripe he has come up with, otherwise BK would be our #1.

hoole in for neville. burns out wide, move chilli to bench and gove bridges his last chance behind tagz to make difference. Could even keep burns in behind and hoole out wide where he played for australian youth.

So GVE's change will be Bridges in for Virgili. Good change imo

I'd also like to see the beard come in for Caravella. I like Caravella but I think Brillante will give us something differentin the centre

It's only round 2 and it's already a must win imo

hausmann
15-10-2013, 02:12 PM
I'd like every game to be seen as must win. The Jets seem far too casual about losing. They know they are one of only 10 teams in a salary capped league. They know that they are one of the few teams with a genuine marquee. There probably isn't another league in the world where any team has such a great chance of winning the Premiership, and yet they are happy to concede that they will not be the team at the top of the ladder come the end of the season.

I agree that Brillante should start as well. I think he will have a stronger presence than Caravella.

Before his first little mind snap I actually thought he was not bad, was working hard and wanted the ball. Even for the screw up with Chapman he should be commended for putting in the hard yards to get back, just didn't need to do what he did.

Not sold that Brilliante will be much of an improvement tbh.

The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets have named an 18-man squad for Sunday’s opening home game against Perth Glory at Hunter Stadium.

Veteran attacker Michael Bridges comes back into the squad after missing the Jets’ Round 1 clash with Sydney FC due to a groin injury, while striker Joey Gibbs has also been added after recovering from illness.

Bridges said he had been close to playing against the Sky Blues in the season opener, but was not quite at 100 per cent fitness for the match.

“At the end of the day I’m not going to lie and let the team down, or let the manager down and I’m certainly not going to let the fans down,”

“If I’m not 100 per cent and I’m feeling something, there’s no point in having 10 men out there

“I could have gone out there and wrapped myself in cotton wool, but I would have got found out, and that’s not in my nature.

Bridges said he was feeling good ahead of Sunday’s clash with the Glory.

“I’ve trained all week with the boys and I’m feeling good now,” Bridges said.

“We’re all just focusing now on Perth and how we can break them down in the final third and get some goals.

“It’s almost like having another gaffer on the park, so hopefully with myself being back this week I can take the pressure off the younger boys and they can go and express themselves.”

Newcastle Jets Squad: 1. Mark BIRIGHITTI (GK), 2. Scott NEVILLE, 4. Kew JALIENS, 6. Zenon CARAVELLA, 7. Andrew HOOLE, 8. Ruben ZADKOVICH, 10. Nathan BURNS, 11. Craig GOODWIN, 12. Connor CHAPMAN, 13. Joey GIBBS, 15. Josh BRILLANTE, 16. Jacob PEPPER, 17. James VIRGILI 18. James BROWN, 19. Michael BRIDGES, 20. Ben KENNEDY, 21. Sam GALLAWAY, 22. Adam TAGGART (two to be omitted).

Ins: Joey GIBBS (returns from illness), Michael BRIDGES (returns from injury)

Outs: Nil

Unavailable: Emile HESKEY (knee – 3 to 4 weeks), Mitch COOPER (knee – long term)

Has anyone ever seen Brown head the ball? He didn't get near a single one today.

Jets better than last week but still full of holes (Perth could easily have had a couple) and still unable to score.

Huge thanks to Birra for taking the time after the game to sign kids shirts and pose for photos.

Well done to the Squadron. Good effort on the chants today when faced with the heat and an uninspiring match.

An understrength Sydney and well understrength Perth. No HAL team could have asked for a better draw to start the season. And we've gotten 1/6 points. Absolutely not good enough.

Oh also ftr - joey gibbs would have been better than Bridges today.

Yeh i agree with Neville... i thought he was really good considering how he has gone in the past. I thought he looked decent when he got forward and he contained that Sydney guy quite well in defence.
Birras massive standout though, looks like another year of our keeper getting player of the year.

Jeterpool
21-10-2013, 07:59 AM
I agree with Neville too. He had a great game and that shot was cracking.

Burns looked better when pushed out wide late in the game. Zads was my MoM - showed the passion I want from the team. Birraz continues to impress. We won't keep him for long.

Anyone know what the diagnosis is for Jaliens?

Jetmaster
21-10-2013, 08:09 AM
The obvious would have been Burns on the left, Taggart in the middle and Goodwin down the right, Bridgey in the number 10. None of those guys looked happy with where they were playing.

Burns was a much improved player in the second half when he moved. Bridgey would have done a job at number 10 - his days as a striker are long gone.

And why didn't we have a defender on the bench ? GVE appears to be justifying Peps as his "play anywhere" man.

Game on a whole - poo. Only good thing was Burns settling in, god he needs Heskey with him though.

Thomas477
21-10-2013, 08:21 AM
I agree jetmaster. Seemed strange that Bridges was the striker when Taggart was out there. I'm gonna say it now, Burns isn't the number 10 we need. We'll get more joy out of playing Taggart in behind Heskey, when he's fit, and playing Burns on the flank.

Maito Mitch
21-10-2013, 09:09 AM
Agree with the comments about Neville, probably his best game in a jets shirt. Seemed to really fire up this week

Can't understand why everyone in the front third was playing out of position. Taggz up front, bridges behind him, Goodwin on the left, burns on the right. It's not ****ing rocket science Gary.

I almost got the feeling that GVE is being forced to play Bridges, so he plays him out of position to make him look ordinary? What other reason is there?

Anyway, decent improvement on round 1 (hard not to be) and we probably should have got the points. In saying that, Perth could have easily snatched it with some of their chances that we again gifted to them

21-10-2013, 09:13 AM

You are obviously missing the work of the master tactician GVE at work here. He sent each of those players out there with specific roles to play and it was not due to his ability to coach that they were unable to complete their assignments (Sarcasm to be inserted). The only error he probably made was going away from the pattern of play that they had spent the last six months trying to perfect which had Bridgey in the No 10 role and allowed the younger, quicker, fitter players to make runs that would engage the defence and allow Bridges to have time to direct the pass to the open player.

GVE must have thought that because he and Edwards were both at the AIS Edwards would be on to him if he played the system that they had been training with for half a year and it isn't that bad at least there are still 75 points available and it is one less home game that we have to watch.

I was sick to death of every player trying to flick the ball on hoping someone was running off their shoulder, only to look up and have no runners.
This to me is the coaches fault. Half of the players think someone should run through, the other half think the ball should be dropped to their feet. every time the ball was flicked through the two players just stare at each other. Surely every player should know if player A gets the ball either player B makes a run, or player A drops the ball to player B's feet and then moves himself.
Surely its not the ****ing hard!

why do we need two screening midfielders, caravella is suppose to be an attacking ball player yet he plays as holding midfielder, ruben tried hard but he wasted a lot of energy closing down their keeper which is usually fruitless most times, goodwin looked disinterested and jamieson took the piss on him in the first 15 minutes, I beleive I was watching the battle for the spoon yesterday, hope Im wrong

I wouldn't call either Caravella or Rubez screeners tbh. In Garynaccio terms, they're 6 & 8 positions. Neither Rubez or Caravella really screens - see how much Sydney cut through us. They're more inclined to follow their man and nip at heals rather than screen.

The work that Rubez did yesterday pressing - made me miss Labi so much. He would have owned that game for us.

Burns is shit. just wanted to dribble the whole ****ing game refused to cut back for Taggart on a few occasions who was making runs into space.
****ing worst bloke. if thats all hes got then January cant come quickly enough.
Bridges is worse. ****ing disc-race. worst thing ive ever sat through. him and his fan boys can **** off. anyone thinking hes the answer, well theres exhibit #96 why its not.
Taggart has got some real quality about him. was the most composed and thoughtful bloke in the front third. made plenty of runs but was refused service by apparent 'pros'.
Neville, good game, well in. now how about you dont fall into the Mitchell trap and have some decent games against teams other than your old clubs. Should have cut it back for Taggart when trying to score from the tight angle. but hey, everyone else is doing it, why not be a glory boy (pardon the pun).

well in to the Squadronz, came through the north end and the noise was good from kickoff.

the following things are a discrace.
GVE. seriously, you are the worst.
Middleby, great idea refusing to open any of the bars and food outlets on the top level of both stands. as if anyone up there wanted anything. you treat people like shit.

**** you. get out. treat customers like shit and see where that gets you.

just got tickets to this fridays game at Etihad. will be good to see some inspired football at a stadium and city that looks after its fans (ill have my copy of the geneva convention just in case). i guess im some sort of bandwagoner or something now Member?

Worst thing would have been if we won that pen and scored. The shitness of all shits that was our performance would have been forgotten. Deadset replace the whole team with Hamilton Azzurri All Age J, Drinky would score a hatty

I'm with plague on Burns - he was getting pushed off the ball all day, his passing is woeful / non-existent, and he seems to have lost a few yards of pace as well.

Overall, I'd say he's triple the price of Labi - with a third the chance of scoring a goal.

We needed someone good enough to replace Ryu.

Hence, I can see the Jets giving Burns a long term contract.

Watch Bridges get removed for Heskey, and Burns will get a bag of assists

Without wanting to argue too much I put it to you that for one to be credited with an 'assist', one must first learn to pass the ****ing ball to the bloke in a goal scoring position.

To be fair though PV4 I gave him credit for at least being positive.
But seriously, after all the "working on out front third" talk from GVE all week the blokes out there looked like they'd never met each other before.
Frustrating to watch.

I see what you're saying.

I also think that he needs people to pass to. IMO Caravella and Burns are always left high&dry with the ball, with sfa options to pass to.

Once we remove Bridges, and replace him with someone who actually wants to be there, Burns will have people to pass to.

I still rate Burns as a player, he has quality. Last time I watched him was for AEK when he came and played in Sydney and he killed it, playing wide left, where he should be.

All he needs to do is get this "im a euro star coming to smash the league" mentality out of his head and remember that it was hard work and good running down the left that got him where he is today.

I have no doubt that if he knuckles down and works hard he could kill it on the left for us.

Firstly it sounded like someone else posted under your name, not the usual.
Secondly Burns and Bridgey are the only forwards that deserve to be in the team. Taggs is hopeless, No.9 who never scores, Goody did nothing.

Care to elaborate on how Bridges deserves to be in the team? What traits/qualities does he bring? What did you see from Sundays game that you could label good things (and did you see any bad?) about Bridges game? Any stats from Bridges games to support any views? Imagine you're a neutral third party viewer, that is watching Bridges for the first time ever - what would you think? What would said viewer have thought after Sunday?

These aren't indirect questions either - I'd love to see/hear what a Bridges fan has to say still. What, exactly, does Bridges bring to the team to deserve a spot still?

If possible, talk about Bridges' qualities first, then feel free to compare him to any of the other players in the squad (and reasons for/against, stats, examples of the other players if you're into comparing Bridges to them).

Any chance you could spend 5 minutes to answer any/all of these questions?

I'm a part of the Bridges out crew (wer're a crew, right?). I think part of why I think he's so bad is because everyone seems to love him, and for the life of me I can't work out why. He's never done anything. He tries some fancy flick passes that rarely come off and everyone faps over him.

BUT, who is a better option at number 10? We've got no one. Brown? He's lost it, dunno how he's gonna get it back. Who else is there?

Just play 4-4-2 ffs and go down the wings all day

Good golly gosh what an interesting statement that is.
I too, would love to know what Bridges did on Sunday that cemented his spot.
As for Taggart, all I will say is that in order to score you need to get into good positions then receive quality service. 1 out of those 2 things happened on Sunday. I rewatched the game to make sure. i encourage others to do the same.
Agreed Goodwin was poor, as too was Virgili when he came on.
As for Burns, any coach that gives instructions to go out there and dribble around everyone and score is a fairly poor one. So either GVE's plan was rubbish (entirely possible) or some players didn't follow his real one.

pv4
22-10-2013, 11:31 AM
The defence I'll give Goodwin is he was against a very inform scott Jamieson for most of the game. I look forward to seeing other forwards up against him this season. For such a little pit bull, jamieson is quality

russjaybee
22-10-2013, 12:48 PM
Jamieson is a rat cut from the same cloth as your Bojic's and Franjic's.

Clearly dreams of being a winger and loves to read his own headlines.

Can play at times though.

As far as Brown goes, in our meeting with GVE last week he mentioned that Brown had been playing with pain since he left GCU and this season is the first time he is playing pain free. The quote GVE said was "it was like running on hot coals".
Hopefully that his issue is now fixed, with some gametime, confidence and support from the crowd he can get back to his best of a few seasons ago.

If he was in that much pain, why was he playing? Surely it would have been better to get it fixed, given we weren't exactly short on numbers in his position...

Bridges is clearly a class above, his touch and vision far exceed that of his colleagues. Should start every game if jets are any chance to win a game. GVE should build the team around him with a mix of youth and experience. After another two seasons as the focal point to our play, he can then be player/manager and lead us in the direction of enlightenment.

steve136
23-10-2013, 04:48 AM
Bridges is the one player that can give us that edge in the attacking third. He just needs players with good engines that can learn to have the same vision as he does, so they'll be ready for all the miraculous passes he's making.
Bridges has that killer instinct up top, which you can clearly see by all the goals that he's been scoring. Bridges in, everyone else out.

I love how Zad cops so much shit for his row-z shots, when he has calmed down on them so much & I daresay (more research required - I'm not going to be like a Bridges fan and make a wild assumption, treat it as gospel & refuse to recognise any other opinion/stat/evidence/etc) as a percentage per game did less of them than Bridges last year.

Last game of the season will be Bridgey's last as caretaker player/coach - will be presented with the keys to the city, number 19 will be retired and the Western Stand named in his honour. With all the money he makes from his media gigs from then on he will open up more restaurants around Newy and eventually buy the club.

Forza Bridgey.
