Newcastle Jets Women Head Coach Peter McGuinness has selected a squad of 18 to participate in the 2013.14 Westfield W-League.
Coach McGuinness says the selected side displays a clear pathway for young talented girls playing within Northern NSW.

“The majority of the 18 players selected have previously played for the Newcastle Jets Women, Northern NSW Football, or are currently part of the Emerging Jets program,” said McGuinness.

The only Jets player to have participated in every season of the Westfield W-League with the Newcastle based club, Gema Simon, has been announced as Captain, while Hannah Brewer will assist in the position of Vice Captain.

Following the retirement of stalwart player, Hayley Crawford, McGuinness notes the importance of the inclusion of experienced players; both local and interstate.

“The squad which has been selected displays a mixture of youth and experience with the likes of Gema Simon and Hannah Brewer in senior positions, as well as a number of Emerging Jets players who will gain their first experience playing at the level of a national competition in Libby Copus-Brown, Adriana Jones and Sophie Nenadovic,” said McGuinness.

In addition, the squad has been bolstered by the addition of three Queenslanders Hannah Beard, Lauren Brown and Ashley Spina, who have previously played in the Westfield W-League with heavyweights Brisbane Roar.

The Newcastle Jets Women commence their campaign on Saturday 9th November when they host Perth Glory at Wanderers Oval, before three consecutive fixtures on the road against Sydney FC, Adelaide United and Melbourne Victory.

Prior to the season kick off, the Jets will face Sydney FC in a trial match at 10am on Saturday 19th October at Adamstown Oval.

Wish em the best of luck, but I don't hold much hope for them. HSG don't give a crap, and NNSW just see it as a training thing for young players from NNSW, as opposed to a national competition, like Canberra United do. The loss of EVE hasn't helped things either. 7th or 8th this year methinks.

Can we get any lower than 8th? :gent:

Year of the double spoon! If we are rubbish in the NYL, we could go for a famous treble :lulzturtle:

People need to get out to the games and give the team their support. At least they show some pride in the shirt unlike a few too many of the A-league players.

Well 2 games in and they've already conceded 9 goals.

I'm honestly feeling sorry for the girls, they're trying their best, but when you come up against players of the quality of de Vanna, Gill, German captain etc, they don't stand a good chance. It's all well and good to promote youth, but I swear their average age must be 19. The oldest is I think Brewer and Day, and they're 24.

May attend their next home game in 6 weeks to see if they're competing, or if the scores have been unfavourable.

I was reading bits and pieces of the twitter feed yesterday. Sounded reasonably competitive but then blew out towards the end. Think we hit the bar three times in a 5 minute period then they went and finished it off up the other end.

Saw their game last week and hughlights of yesterdays game. The goalkeeper has been terrible, dropping bals, and generally has no idea.It is all very well to promote youth but this is the highest level of womens football in Australia and you need some older heads to have any real chance. The defence is also very suspect.May be ok in a year or two if they stay together and get a decent coach but will struggle big time this year.

Good to see I'm not the only one that thinks this. The keeper is the same as last year, and she had an alright season last year, but you're right, having your eldest players being 24 is a recipe for disaster. Look at last year, they had EVE, but she's obviously left because she didn't deem the team competitive. When you have Newy locals leaving because their team isn't being competitive, its quite telling imo.

3-0 down at HT to the Lady Reds, the team formerly the joke of the W-League.

Why bother, seriously? Surely it'll be better if we simply didn't have a team and stopped embarrassing ourselves every week.

It's like having eleven Michael Bridges on the pitch at once.

Maddy Searl gone for the season with torn ACL.

Just reading up on here... U17 national rep, development came to a sudden halt when she broke both ankles... AT THE SAME TIME. Also suffered from CFS and ongoing hamstring problems.

If the team is lost funding is also lost, from a NNSWFF perspective that is. They are required to provide elite pathways, and this is one of them. No pathway lower FFA funding etc

What the pity appears to be is it is being treated as a necessity and just that. I acknowledge the serious costs involved, travel alone for an entire squad to an away Brisbane game would be I assume in the vicinity of 25 rooms, 30 air plane tickets, food, transport etc

But I dont think we do anyone justice , especially the players concerned justice by entering a competition under resourced to be competitive.

But we're giving youth a chance! Doesn't matter if where winning games in a professional called or not if we're promoting youth!

Honestly, I've stopped caring. NNSWF obviously don't see it as a worthwhile effort, so why should we care?

NNSWF headline: Sydney FC deny Jets first win

W-League headline: Sydney FC brush Jets aside.

We lost 3 nil. Worst thing is they are charging people to attend.

Score flattered Newcastle. If Sydney had been any good inside the final third the score could have been anything

Can't be right...just coach to the curriculum and things will fall into place...just ask Dave Smith and cronies. Yes we need more pro coaches but we seem to be very one directional in our approach. I reckon in another 5 years there will be a completely different structure in place.

Good game today against adelaide. Down 2-0 during the first half, bounced back for a 2-2 draw.

I thought both of adelaides goals were really against the run of play, and Barbieri had a blinder of a game to keep us scoreless for much of the first half.

Great to see us finally get a point, but it really could have (should have) been all 3.

I really give Peter Mc Guiness a lot of credit for what he achieved with these girls. If you watched them at the start of the season, it was looking like a long, long season. The last 3 or so games they were really competitive and could have won one or more with a bit of luck.
I think Peter would have viewed it as possibly the greatest coaching challenge he has faced.
As I said, very impressed by the improvement.

The problem for next year is will they hang onto their current senior (20 year old?) players!
