well he didn't burn two seasons and a full preseason to get there for starters
didn't need to gut the team either, worked with what he had and recruited players to improve areas where he believed they were weak, without wasting spots & cash on x factors that only play youth league

Does anyone know the deal with huge aliens red? Was it a second yellow (couldn't remember a first one during the game) or a straight red for dissent?

It was nice to get another win, but I had a horrible feeling when Burns stood up to take the pen- never thought for a moment he'd get it. He seems to be all dribble (and granted its nice to have someone on the jets who can take a player on like Burns can) with no final pass or finish at the moment.

Thank god for two nice finishes by Taggart!

Commentators said it was a straight red but on the vision I'm sure the ref put up a yellow, then a red (he was already on a yellow)

Judging by fox sports match centre... he got 2 yellows during the same period there... I never seen the ref pull a yellow but that's what it says. 2 yellows and a red in the 87th minute

Dainnan
17-11-2013, 07:23 PM
He definitely put up a yellow first, so if aliens was already on a yellow, that explains it.

Was confused because the ref took so long to put up the red after the yellow. Must have needed a reminder that Aliens already had a card.

Match centre on FFA website says he only received one yellow, so it can only have been an R6 offence - foul/abusive language. Might be worth appealing if he said something in dutch…..

From my vantage point Kew got a yellow for the tackle on the touch line (which wasn't even a foul let alone a card). 2nd yellow was given for mouthing off.
2 yellows = red ergo 1 week off nothing more to worry about.

Middleby was locked in negotiations with the puddle as I left the stadium. From my sources he's offered it a 3 year deal.
Puddle will still probably sign for Sydney though.

I thought that the tackle on the sideline was ok.Wasnt play restarted with a throw in from that?Referee appeared to start to take YC from pocket but put it back.RC appeared to be a straight red. From the look on the referees face he appeared quite angry and I thought that the card was for OFFINABUS for something that was said to the referee.

I'll add in again, Kew was NOT given a second yellow, unless he received one in the first half. Per my understanding, you have to "show" the card to the player, i.e. hold it above your head, you can't just say to someone you've been carded.

That, and the official stats only list 1 yellow card to Kew's name,

That, and the official stats only list 1 yellow card to Kew's name,

I am up in the western stand and was pretty much on top of the incident. My thoughts were he knocked the ball out and was not booked for that.

He turned around and gave the ref a gobful for the lack of action on Zads being fouled. Ref issued a yellow.

Kew turned and walked away and kept talking and got a straight red

I hope it was just his ankle hurting after rolling it, because I thought chapman resembled topor-Stanley today. He seemed to just boot it a little too much, unless it was part of GVE not wanting short sharp passing.
Besides that he is such a good young defender!
It's a shame jaliens got that red, he is a bloody classy defender.
With those two there and playing well I really think we finally have a decent chance at keeping goals to a minimum. Definitely the best cb pairing we have had since topor and ljubo!

And what can you say about tagz, that kid certainly can finish a chance! He is very classy in front of goals. He really does remind me of j.griff when he plays!

I thought the tactic to not **** around with it at the back was a good thing today considering the weather conditions. Seemed to effect Brisbane coz thats where our goals came from.:wtf:

Couldn't give two ****s if Chapo booted it long today. It was the smart play.

Was pleasing that Birraz got less and less touches as the game wore on and our defenders looked like they had made the smart decision to use him less.

Indeed. I was in the Western Stand today and they were starting to get into over there. Keep it up!

On that note, any reason why the Squadron was in the corner instead of Bay 2? I may have missed something...
Good to hear that the Westerns were getting into the C&R - its a bit difficult to judge form the other side if some are getting into it or not.

Also we moved to the terrace for this game as we didnt have many people and we thought a smaller area would look and sound better than being spread all over bay 2. I think it worked.
But as I said in another thread - it was a one off.

It's been mentioned before, but how about that "Final Pass" to Taggs for the 1st goal, eh? Honestly, we obtain a player who looks more and more likely every week, he misses a penalty (which every player in the world has done) and suddenly it's "Get him off!", "Why did we sign him?" - give me a break

P.S. I'm not saying you have said these things Dainnan, just using your post as a reference.

Agreed. It was always going to take some time to get used to playing in the HAL, and playing at all, for Burns. He seems to get better every week. Like I said a page or two back - the assist to Taggz & the goal-saving slide were the two biggest highlights I saw from him.

IMO if he didn't take the pen at all, or scored it, he would have gotten 2 or 3 points in that FS voting thing. But Taggz, North & Neville got those points iirc

-Taagart is the off spring of griff. That celebration for the second goal and the og against the coast i think is a pure sign of how passionate the guy is. Re-sign him immediately.

-Burns (bar the penalty miss) was great and has a future at the club

At the end of the Press Conference yesterday, GVE was asked about Burns' future. Said something along the lines of looking at it soon/ in December. Ultimately up to his parent club though, and whether they will accept any offer for him.

At least the intention is there to try and retain him as a permanent squad member

When Nick Carle was allowed by Sydney to take his sand-league dollars in the UAE, he has come back to them on basically minimum wage. Here's hoping that Jerks can use a similar ploy, and say that because we were good guys & let RG chase the coin, he now plays for SFA. Can't see him being like that though.

But after saying all that - I'm still confused as to how, and what position, RG fits into GVE's system. He's not pacey, which is what GVE wants from his wingers. He's not ultra-creative. He's not hard-working defensively. He's not playing in the shadow striker position, because GVE's system doesn't allow for that position. I fail to see how he fits our system, so see his signing a bit pointless.

Burns on the other hand - loving him. Re-sign him!

Rgriff has the nouce our young guys lack.

He easily play wide or a forward central role and make it rain goals.

So currently we play 4-3-3, and this is roughly how we're lining up:

-----------------Biraz------------------
Neville--Chapman--Jaliens--Gallaway
-------Zad---Kanta---Brillante---------
Hoole--------Taggz-------------Burns

We don't play a #10 anymore, but more or less have Kanta screening & Zad & Brillante just running around. Both our wide guys are there to push the ball past their defender, use their pace & create chances. They're also big on the ambush pressing game that requires a bundle of pace. Then you've got Taggz, who's doing his thang. And you've got Heskey to return also.

Where does R.Griff fit in? If he gets similar coin to before (around 200-250k + goal bonus), or even if he's on SFA, how do you validate bringing him in when Burns, Taggz & Hoole all are staking claims for an undisputed starting spot? What about if GVE decides to stop killing Goodwin's career, wouldn't the left mid spot be for him? If Griff is known to up and abandon us, and is old, wouldn't it be better to have a younger player more likely to hang around? What happens to the poor, helpless, misunderstood, often-unwarrantedly(?)-targeted, Michael Bridges? What about Virgili? Caravella as a 10 is still an option? What will Griff bring to the team, and from what position, that our current players aren't?

On this subject, who here would have gone low & who would have gone high?

If that was me, I'd be worried if I hit it on the ground that the damp pitch would slow it down and/or stop it. Maybe I wouldn't have attempted to hit it as high as Burns, but I would have attempted to get it off the ground for sure. What would be the correct way to take a pen in those conditions?

Also to any and everyone who has made mentioned to Burns lacking the final ball - is this excluding his assist to Taggart?

low and hard any day, Keeper went the wrong way and unless he kicks like Berbatov, it would have gone in even if slowed by wet ground. Burns spent the whole match over thinking things. He needs to step back, relax and just keep it simple. he turned the ball over needlessly so many times trying fancy back heels, one two step-overs and trying to slide the ball around players rather than the simple pass or chip. He also spent time walking the ball into traffic rather than the easy pass.

Even if low and hard had missed it would have been acceptable compared to that legendary **** up. but it was just a cherry on top of a steaming pile of excrement of a game he had.
he was good last week though.

Perhaps I am being a bit harsh. It was more of a reference to GVE's insistence to playing Burns for a full 90 mins.
GVE's interchange strategy seems scripted well and truly before the game starts ... it was always a given he was going to take Hoole off in the 70th minute irrespective of who seems to be the better option at the time.

Have you noticed that if you score ... you're a dead set certainty GVE will interchange you ... (mind you ... his late interchange of Taggart for Caravella did make sense at that stage of the game with only 10 men (I'll give him that one).

The best place to kick penalties is on the opposite side of the way the goalkeeper goes.
You need to kick it at least low enough to get under the bar and hard enough to get it to cross the line. This tends to work quite well.

I think the only frustrating thing about Burns it that since he is such a good dribbler and runs people into the ground left right and centre, its so dissapointing to see his lack of vision in the final third, too slow to release the cross, picks the wrong type of cross and tends to dribble into trouble rather than play a simple pass out of it. I think part of all this is that he is desperate to get himself a goal and i think you can tell he wants to be the player that the fans want to see but in his keenness he's trying too hard.
If he could just add the skill of consistently offering a quality final cross etc he'd be one of the top players in the league.

Last 2 years when we were shite the majority of our decent players (aside from Goalie) have been our wide blokes (Goody, Griff, Brockie etc).
We have finally got a decent spine to the team with the addition of Heskey and Kew, and the coach finally picking the likes of Beard, Chappo and Kanta consistently (and Rubes being Rubes).
As many have stated he's working the team to suit the players.
Why anyone would want to **** with that middle of the park astounds me.

Regan > Kanta (in that position) > Pepper > Galloway > Mitchell so I wouldn't even have Mitchell warming the bench.

Regan has been playing fairly regular youth matches and played in the reserves v CC reserves a week ago.

So I would put Regan there and leave Kanta alone to do what he does best, rather than weakening the screening role to expose a weakened central defensive pairing.

Honestly, we obtain a player who looks more and more likely every week, he misses a penalty (which every player in the world has done) and suddenly it's "Get him off!", "Why did we sign him?" - give me a break

P.S. I'm not saying you have said these things Dainnan, just using your post as a reference.

Fair call if he did make that pass to Taggs. Embarrassingly, I actually missed the ball to Taggart so may have been a bit harsh on Burns.

I don't want him off the park, I love the ability to take players on he brings to the team. Just wish he would improve his crossing and shooting a bit. As someone said earlier in the thread, he seems to get under every shot he makes and they tend to go sailing over the crossbar.

I agree with How well Kanta is playing but always Kew is a big lost. IMO i would much rather see Kanta there as he has been playing reg first team footballs instead of Regan even though i do rate regan. bu most importantly i really dont want Mitchells to play there

Kanta looked good in the couple of minutes he had to fill in for Chapman when he was off getting treatment and Brisbane were pressing us yesterday.

Our improvement in the last few weeks has coincided with Kanta's return to the first team and I wouldn't want to risk moving him out of midfield though.

How did everyone else think Pepper did yesterday? Thought he did ok for the most part in defence. Offered about as little as Gallaway going forward though.. Would prefer to see Goodwin starting there if he's not sulking/Gary's not sulking/whatevers going on there.

I didn't think yesterdays was scripted. I thought the bloke done a great job as soon as Taggz got the equaliser to actually bring on Heskeytime ASAP. When I saw Heskeytime come to the sideline I thought he was gonna **** it and Taggz was getting pulled.

I thought it was a great decision by the Egg to actually ask Roar another question straight after the equaliser and give the crowd something to cheer by bringing on Heskeytime and giving the side the jolt to push on for the win whilst they had their backs up and not to wait 10 more mins to let the game settle down

Burns was great yesterday. He runs himself into the ground defensively and going forward he causes problems.
what about all those times he didn't chase the ball down or track an opponent, yes he can dribble but he can't finish or cross

Agreed.

Would lve to see heskey and taggarts together.
Heskey's best years were when he was working in conjunction with Owen, whe open was pacy and could finish.... Taggart fits this description. Big man, quick man. Make it happen GVE.

You would like to think if he is going to do it, it would be this weekend....
Hesky looks fit, Tagz in great form, playing at home against last place.
Knowing Gary though, he will try to pull of something crazy and play 6 at the back, 4 through midfield with kanta up front by himself. You know to show what a genius tactician he is!

The 6 at the back will be Taggart, Heskey, Gibbs, Hoole and Goodwin with BK in goal. And it will definitely be our smallest stature player up front whilst we play hoofball. SURELY.

I hope you have included Birraz in your six at the back because if you haven't, and GVE can pull this off, we will have at least a 1 man advantage. If he can get away with that he would truly be a genius.

Hahaha he can play the old school roaming goalie rule!
