IN-form Adam Taggart said his Newcastle Jets teammates deserved to share the credit after he received the A-League young player of the month award yesterday.

Taggart was the competition’s standout under-21 performer in November, scoring six goals in Newcastle’s wins against Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne Heart.
See your ad here

The A-League’s leading scorer is now the second nominee for the Young Footballer of the Year award, joining Central Coast’s Trent Sainsbury (October).

‘‘I put it down to the whole team, being able to create the chances and support me as much as they have,’’ Taggart said yesterday. ‘‘For me it’s a massive positive for the whole club and team.’’

The 20-year-old said November was a month he would long remember.

As well as his goal spree and yesterday’s award, he agreed to a new contract extension last week that will keep him in Newcastle until at least the end of next season.

‘‘It’s been a really nice month, to be fair,’’ he said.

‘‘We’ve had some really nice results and for me, personally, being able to sign and stay here for another year, it’s fantastic and nice to know where I’m going to be next season and really concentrate on my football.’’

Taggart was confident his partnership up front with marquee striker Emile Heskey would improve the more they played together.

Heskey started his first match of the season in last week’s loss to Sydney, playing 58 minutes, and will be looking to open his goal-scoring account against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on Sunday.

‘‘Obviously, it’s going to take some time,’’ Taggart said.

‘‘He’s just coming back [from injury] and I haven’t been able to play with him for a long time.

‘‘He’s a great player and brings a whole different sort of game to the team.’’.

EXCLUSIVE: Ryan Griffiths has described Newcastle Jets striker Adam Taggart as an exciting player with a bright future who reminds him of his brother Joel.

Griffiths played alongside Taggart, who has scored six goals for the Jets this term, at Hunter Stadium last season.

“When he first came into the club I actually said to the coach ‘he’s a good player this one’,” Griffiths said.

“He still needs to develop a lot about his game but jeez what a striker.

"He gets in positions, he’s hungry to score. When he was playing with us back in friendly games he’d always score, and technical goals you know.

"He’d always put it away and you’d think ‘jeez he’s always going to score goals’.

"Last year, when I was playing, he came in and didn’t score at all and I was really surprised. I couldn’t really figure it out.

"But this year he’s come on. I think it’s just a confidence thing. Now that he’s scored a couple he’s going to continue to score goals throughout the year.

"He’s one to watch. He’s a typical striker and in my opinion, if he keeps his feet on the ground and just concentrates on playing well, he’s going to be one for the future.”

Taggart has been in hot form this season culminating in a hat-trick in Newcastle’s 3-1 win over the Melbourne Heart in round seven.

The former Young Socceroo and Olyroo, who first broke into the A-League with Perth Glory in 2010, received his first senior cap under Holger Osieck against Hong Kong in December last year.

Fellow forward, Griffiths, believes that Socceroo call-up came too early for the 20-year-old but he has developed a lot since then.

“He got the Socceroos cap when he didn’t really deserve to,” Griffiths said.

“A lot of people were surprised by that because he hadn’t really scored any goals or proven himself.

"But now, if he got a chance to go in the camp, I think it would be good for him. In the future he definitely should be there if he keeps going the way that he’s going.

"He’s an exciting player, he’s always shooting, he gets into good positions. He actually reminds me a bit of my brother Joel with that bit of mongrel in him.”

Based in Newcastle after his move to Malaysia Super League side Sarawak fell apart, Griffiths has kept a keen eye on the Jets this season. The 32-year old spent four years in total with the Hunter outfit including stints in the NSL and A-League.

“I think they’ve done really well,” Griffiths said of the club.

“The first few games they were playing that possession-based football but it was really negative, all the balls were getting played backwards and there was no real strike power up there.

"The coach has changed his tactics and it seems to be working. They’re playing a lot more entertaining football that’s for sure, they’re scoring goals and doing well."

Anyone else getting a bit fed up with some of Tagz poor decisions lately?

Don't get me wrong, he has done more than most this season, but I could probably count nearly half a dozen times in his past few games where he could have easily put a man 1 on 1 with the keeper, but shot rather optimisticly instead.

He needs to realise he has been identified as a threat now and attracts more attention from defenders. He needs to use this as an advantage and now draw the defenders to release another player of ours who is neglected and somewhat open. I feel he may have gotten a little too excited about his early season form and he has now become a little big-headed and selfish.

The difference between a flash in the pan and a good player is one who finds the right balance.

I was saying this to pv4 last night, Taggart has easily been our best player this season. Any team in the league would love to have him in their team. How long has it been since we've had a player like that?

pv4 suggested Brillante and Birighitti as other players of the season. I think they've been great, but not on the same level as Taggz.

Clayton Zane: Ange Postecoglou should look at Adam Taggart for Socceroos

Newcastle coach Clayton Zane has hailed Jets striker Adam Taggart as a strong chance to make the Socceroos World Cup squad following his side's crucial 1-0 A-League victory over Melbourne Heart at Hunter Stadium on Saturday.

The 20 year-old attacker netted the only goal of the match early in the second half to steer the Jets to just their third home win of the season and end Heart's five-match winning streak.

"He has to be a bolter for Brazil, personally I would take that type of that player just to give him the experience because he's going to be around in the national set up for some time," Zane said.

"The boy never stops finishing at training. All he wants to do is hit the back of the net. He's desperate to score goals.

"It's good for him to get a little run of goals leading into the finals, he's a very important player for us."
Taggart's 11th goal of the season puts him in a good position for the golden boot award and Zane said his current form deserves to be rewarded.

"The strong points for Taggs is that he's a goal scorer, he's so hungry and he's got that turn off pace that will allow him to go and play in a decent league in Europe.

"Based on that performance today, he could find himself on the plane to Brazil.

"I'd love to see someone like Adam Taggart given the chance because he's been quite consistent this year."

Zane admitted it was not his side's best performance but he was pleased with the determination and resilience of his troops as they held on for their third win in four matches.

"Yeah its huge, it's great to overcome that hurdle of winning a home match again, I think that takes a little bit of pressure off us," he said.

"We still looked lively on the counter attack, some good points to take out of it but probably the biggest one and the most positive for me is that it was an ugly win and I don't think we've had too many of them this season.

"We're not home and hosed yet, we've still got a lot of work to do because it wasn't a pretty performance but we can be a lot better at home and take a lot of confidence from that."

The Jets had several opportunities to kill the game off in the second half but some wasteful finishing and some excellent keeping from Andrew Redmayne kept the visitors in the match until the final whistle.

"It was one of those games where the Heart were always in it so we did need that second goal," Zane said.

"Redmayne was terrific with some of those one on one saves and on another day you come in here and you're punching yourself for not finishing them off but they did well to close the game out.

"We were desperate, credit to the boys we're starting to show we can knick goals on the counter attack so we're going to be a bit of a threat heading into this finals period I hope."

Well the herald are saying that Taggs & Birraz both have $400k buyout ceilings in their contracts, so I’m guessing at absolute best we’ll get $400k, no club CEO would pay over an existing buyout ceiling……….. (go on plague I’ve set it up nicely now just tap it in)

Brillante is the other that’s rumoured to potentially be on the move come the end of the season and he has no buyout ceiling so we could theoretically get more for him then our starting GK & our leading goal scorer, but I’m not sure when his contract is up he could actually walk for free.

ADAM Taggart believes the time is right for a move to Europe – now it’s up to his management to secure a club.

The youngest player to win the A-League Golden Boot, Taggart has a year remaining at the Jets but regards an overseas transfer as a priority.

‘‘If there is a time to go, it is when you have scored 16 goals,’’ he said.

‘‘For me it would be a bit silly to stay for another season.

‘‘If there is going to be an opportunity it is now when you are scoring goals.

‘‘Going overseas is a priority and it is up to management to get it sorted.’’

The Herald understands that Taggart negotiated a transfer ceiling in his most recent contract with the Jets.

The 20-year-old has been linked to a move to Holland but a formal offer is yet to materialise.

His agent Zeljko Susa was in China on Monday but business partner Richie Hinton confirmed that there were a "a lot of people interested" in their client.

Taggart, who is expected to be named in the Socceroos squad for a friendly against South Africa next month, has long held ambitions to head abroad.

"It would be stupid for any young player to say they don't want to go overseas and challenge themselves at the highest level," he said.

The Perth-born attacker capped a breakout season with a late goal, his 16th, in the 2-0 win over Adelaide on Friday night.

It created a new club record and moved him four clear in the race for the leading goal-scorer's title.

"At the start I didn't want to say anything about the Golden Boot," he said.

"You don't want to put more pressure on yourself than there already is.

"At the same time, it would be stupid if you are striker and said you were not going for the Golden Boot.

"Who are you to be a striker in the A-League and not want to score the most goals.

"It doesn't matter what league you are in, if you don't want to score the most goals why are you playing.

"That is why I said yes, of course it is a goal.

"It was on my mind from the first game. Even when I hadn't scored in the opening four rounds, it was still a goal.

"As they went in, I put more pressure on myself to work harder and keep improving and score more goals each week.

"You have to set standards and you have to set them high.

"If you don't meet them then you have to work harder."

Taggart credited former coach Gary van Egmond for "toughening him up" and admitted it was a difficult time when his AIS coach departed after round 15.

"A lot of coming here had to do with Gary in terms of hardening up the mentality and becoming a senior professional rather than a youth team player or someone on the verge," he said.

"We were away with the Olyroos at the time [of van Egmond's sacking].

"For us to be away when he left was a little disappointing.

"At the end of the day, Clayton [Zane] came in as coach and it was a positive move.

"He was a striker himself and has been good to me.

"As an attacking player, he encouraged the team to play forward and encouraged the team to take risks in the final third and things like that."

Zane also orchestrated a change in formation from a 4-3-3, in which Taggart played largely in a wide role, to a 4-4-2 where he partnered Emile Heskey up front.

Taggart had scored six goals in his first 13 games, including a brace and a hat-trick.

After the change in round 16, the striker netted 10 goals in the final 11 rounds.

"To be able to play up top alongside Emile, where more of the attention goes to him, was nice," Taggart said.

"I was able to sneak in around him and pinch a few goals.

"He does so well holding the ball up, and winning everything in the air.

"It allows me the space and freedom to go and attack and score goals."

 Here we go post season shenanigans start now
Can see plenty more of this occurring

On another note I will get in early and say if Middleby has signed and agreed a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for a minimum 400k the bloke needs running out of town.
Strikers with his potential at his age are likely to develop and improve to say that no one expected him to continue to improve when he was re signed to a new deal early in the season shows naivety and incompetence.

400k is chicken feed for a bloke of his ability and talent and particularly with the position he plays if this 400k figure is true then he is well undervalued and the decision to allow a clause in his contract of those terms is a ****ing disgrace

Well now that depends on your opinion.

Is it better to get a bloke to sign a 12 month extension, meaning if he leaves in the next transfer window the club gets a transfer fee, albeit capped at 400k, or is it better to allow a player’s contract to run out and then not have the player signed for the following year, meaning he could go and sign an early contract for the next season with one of your rivals and when the player lands a transfer you receive nothing & your rival cashes in, or even not have him sign a contract at all and move on a free as the golden boot winner.

Whilst I don’t like players having transfer ceilings I can see how they work out as a sort of compromise for the player and club.

Also MFKFC just assuming it is "only" 400k is a bit naive. DDS is going to Roma for "only" 500k. But with appearance bonus, sell-on fees, etc could escalate to 2.5m (so you're not right, Thomas). Taggz will have similar in his buyout clause.

And realistically, whilst the club wants to make money from him, they can't stand in his way if he wants to test himself in Europe. I daresay the FFA & PFA get heavily involved in buyout clauses too, to ensure clubs don't hold the young player(s) at ransom. 400k upfront is one of the higher sell prices the HAL has seen. Carle maybe was 500k, I think Rostyn Griffiths went for 1-2m to Asia but that's a different kettle altogether.

I'm on record as being unsatisfied with the one year extension he signed. I thought we negotiated from a position of weakness.
But anyway.
Having said that now is the time for him to go, and if we get $400k so be it. There's something about him that doesn't sit right. I just don't see him making it in the big time. We should get whatever we can and hopefully maximise our assets in future.

Yeah, the cynic (realist?) in me thinks this. All a transfer fee will do is mean club losses (HSG/Tinks) will be less, not more investment in the club. Could sell him for $20m and that just ends up as cash back for HSG/Tinks.

If we sell for a price, the higher the price the better as our profile as a talent breeding club increases globally. Clubs all over the world will get wind of a transfer from some australian club to somewhere for $xxxxxx and a scout somewhere will think "wonder who else they have".

It's a positive move for the club, even if our budget doesn't increase from it IMO

Grimario
15-04-2014, 09:29 AM
You are confusing "talent breeding" for "schmucks we can rip off because they undervalue their talent".

If I was Tinkler, I would be livid that someone in my organisation signed a clause for a player that is going to rob me of potential millions.

And you are making the point that the HIGHER we sell someone for, the better it is for the club. How is that a good thing if we have a 400k clause and are getting ****ed out of millions????

pv4
15-04-2014, 09:36 AM
Who exactly is paying millions for a 20year old Australian striker, particularly when you look at the track record of Australians heading overseas (how many are actually starting each week?)? Like I said - 400k is a massive transfer fee from the HAL.

If I was Tinkler I'd applaud that they re-signed Taggart, and got a transfer fee at all, as opposed to letting him go on a free.

Grimario

Scum got a record $1.3m fee for a no talent plonker like Rostyn Griffiths. We have a fringe socceroo, potential world cup bolter who has just won the golden boot.

Seeing as the FFA get a cut out of all transfer dealings overseas I can't imagine they have any interest in stopping clubs selling players for more money as they stand to gain more. The PFA have no leg to stand on if a club refuses to sell a contracted player anyway. Yes a club can stand in his way by refusing to agree a deal unless they are happy with the compensation. That's what a contract is for and it is a 2 way street

Assuming it is 400k with clauses like the De Silva deal has I can cope with that. Problem being is I see it happening that we sell a bloke of his talents for 400k and that's all with no clauses.

Can see many clubs in Europe taking a gamble on him at 400k cause worse case scenario it is a good investment cause if he fails and it ain't that much money down the drain for Euro Clubs.

IF he works out you polish him up get some on field value out of him and can then on sell him for a million or two or even more to a bigger club

I think there was something mentioned at the time of re-signing. I'd heard this figure before but can't remember the source.

I hope Taggz does well if he goes overseas and am glad we will be getting something for him if so because we really weren't getting anything for him. The player in this instance had all the power in the negotiations. At the time I recall a lot of people saying his re-signing was only going to be until the end of the season anyway.

I just hope that IF he fails he returns to our team because they gave him the chance to play and get that overseas contract. That will be a big test of his loyalty.

Bloke makes the WC squad and then gets on the field and does anything positive like score a goal and the buyers will be lining up particularly at the 400k price he is allegedly available for.

Agree it would be good to see him stick around for longer but at the end of the day he will learn and develop quicker out of this league and if he is a success over there he will be better off for going now.

Going now will only reduce his chances of success but the rewards are greater if he in fact succeeds

For the Socceroos long term and Taggz own personal benefit he needs to go this off season

I'm all for having a bunch of arrogant pricks for players (from the stories I've heard Taggart definitely qualifies for this category), but you blokes do realise that he said "it would be silly for me to stay here another season"?

I mean I'm 99% sure that Griff won't want to stick around here next season either, but to openly say it in the media like that shows a massive disrespect to the club and fans.

So if the bloke gets an offer to go OS or stay at the jets which is the smart decision. If he stays and has a shit season what then, he's out of contract with the jets, he's got no offer OS and he's no longer the hot shot young golden boot player any more meaning general interest would have reduced.

Simply I'm reading between the lines knowing first hand how reporters can decide to twist a quote, or lack the context of the question in their article.

Look at his first quote he's clearly responding to a question about when is the right time to leave to head OS, well geez Sherlock journo I'd imagine after you have set a club scoring record, won the golden boot, been the youngest player to do so in the HAL history, made the step up to the socceroos, potentially making a world cup squad/camp and you have achieved all this with a basket case club who's had a coach sacking, poor performances, an unbalanced squad and when you have a nice attractive transfer fee ceiling in your current contract and current interest from OS clubs. Its not rocket science, its not like his current club is on the cusp of achieving things, we still aspire to being slightly greater then the bottom 45%of our league wow wee such high ambition, no coach appointed, an owner that is in financial trouble and desperately trying to sell to anyone interested.

But it's 100% true.
If nothing changes, if no one pulls there finger out, if next year is the same old dross it would be stupid for him to stay here.

If he goes, good luck to him.
If he stays, hopefully his truth bomb, rocket up the arse might get some in the squad/club to work header/smarter and we might see some results improve.

We have been shit for ages, we have no coach, it would be stupid for him to stay, and we (fans players club) get upset by him saying that then we deserve the shirt we get.

The mediocrity the club and squad have served up for so long deserves no respect.

@ Pico: difference is that there's isn't an overseas offer yet, but he's virtually already ruling out playing for us next season. This is the key point that everyone seems to be missing.

Regarding the shoddy journalism, fair point, but in any context it's a pretty bad quote. What's wrong with the old "I'll make that decision when it comes" approach, or better yet "I love the club, but if I get an offer from Europe then it will be hard to turn down"?

@ Gav: I can see where you're coming from, but personally I don't think that's the right way to go about things regardless of the circumstances. The club was still the one who gave him his big chance in the A-League, and the fans were the ones who supported him and voted him player of the season. I don't think this was the best way to go about making that particular point.

Plus I find it hard to buy that Taggart is doing this for anything other than selfish reasons.

GazFish35

Taggz has always given 100% plus while playing for the Jets and as a fan we really can't ask for anymore than that.
He's perhaps the most exciting prospect this country has produced since Viduka and as such he needs to go to Europe sooner rather than latter.
Good luck to him and I look forward to seeing him ply his trade in the leagues of Europe.

Mark325
15-04-2014, 10:42 PM
I'd like to see him get another season and see if he can have either equal or similar success before he considers a move. Chances are he'll turn into the other top prospects of recent years who have all this momentum, decide that leaving for an international club is the right idea, then you never hear about them again because they don't get game time and are still to young and inexperienced

No where near to young, he is a year older than raheem sterling who is killing it with liverpool ffs, he should go now (if there is an offer) and start developing now why he is young with the best coaches in the world rather than the A-LEAGUE.
I think 1 more year might **** him up, go now why he is hot property...

Taggz is far better than Oar, Leckie, Armini, Rogic, and the other fringe players that went overseas when they were not ready.
Taggz won the golden boot. The other lot had the odd good game and yet played with winning teams. And as far as goals are concerned none of them did anything special on a regular basis.

That none of that lot made the grade in Europe is no surprise. Taggz will be successful and he will play first team football in Europe.

Grimario
16-04-2014, 11:55 AM
Apart from Oar who is a regular at Utrecht.
And Sarota who is also a regular there.
And Leckie who is a regular at Frankfurt.
And Kruse who was a regular at Bayer Leverkusen before knee injury.

But none of them have ever gone on to play first team football in Europe. Taggart would be the first. Definitely.

Don't disagree with your point though - he has had a far more impressive season in a shitter team than they all had when they departed.

12 goals in 44 appearances over several seasons.

In his last stint in the A-league he amassed a massive one goal in nine appearances.

His best season he scored nine from 22 appearances.
