Andrew Parkinson Previews Round 11 of the Zone Premier League

Round 11 of the Zone Premier League season kicks off this weekend with several important fixtures set to affect both ends of the table.

In the match of the round, University host Cooks Hill United at Ray Watt Oval on Saturday afternoon.

Uni will be fresh after their wash out last weekend and will be desperate for a win to keep them in touch with the finals.

Uni is equal fifth on the table, four points adrift of New Lambton.

Cooks Hill will be looking to continue their fine recent form to stay within touching distance of the top of the table.

United, third on goal difference, were 3-1 winners last time out over Plattsburg Maryland and a win here would see them go five games unbeaten.

Also on Saturday, Morisset travels to Cardiff No.2 Oval to take on Cardiff City looking to finally kick start their 2012 campaign.

Last season’s grand finalists are rooted to the bottom of the table and are the only team to have failed to win a match so far.

Cardiff is level with Uni in fifth and will see this game as vital to keeping themselves on the cusp of the finals.

Mayfield United will be hoping the week off freshens them up when they host Swansea at Mayfield Park.

Mayfield are ninth and will be in for a tough afternoon against the in-form team in the competition.

Swansea has won their last four in a row, moving into second place in the process.

However, with the tightness of competition this season, any slip up will give hope to the chasing pack.

In games on Sunday, Plattsburg Maryland will be looking to stop the rot when they host New Lambton at Col Curran Oval.

After a strong start to the season, Plattsburg have now lost their last three matches, sliding to seventh.

They are five points from their opponents on Sunday afternoon and a win is essential if they are to keep touch with the Eagles.

New Lambton will be looking to maintain their charge towards the top of the table, having accounted for Cardiff 3-2 at home last weekend.

In the final match of the round, top of the table Warners Bay host Dudley Redhead needing to win to maintain their place.

The Panthers have two games in hand on the teams chasing them; however, the problem of midweek fixtures and tiredness may become difficult.

Dudley was disappointing last weekend losing their derby at home to Swansea and the Thistles will be looking to bounce back with the scalp of the high-flying Panthers.

Morriset had nothing from the minute the game started.

The midfield was rarely coming back to the help the backs which ended up with 2 or 3 Cardiff players free or unmarked.

Round 12 of the Zone Premier League season kicks off this weekend with a huge top of the table encounter.

Cooks Hill United host Swansea at the Newcastle Athletics Field on Saturday afternoon with both teams needing a win to maintain their place near the summit.

The winner of this match will keep the pressure on Warners Bay, while the loser faces the danger of slipping outside the finals places.

Swansea have been on an excellent run of form lately, winning their last five matches in a row.

Their last defeat came back in mid-May when they were beaten 1-0 at home by Warners Bay.

Since then they have conquered all comers including an impressive 2-1 win over New Lambton and a hard fought 1-0 victory in their derby contest with Dudley Redhead.

Last weekend Swansea overcame Mayfield United 2-0 and will be looking to make it six in a row on Saturday.

Coincidently, Cooks Hill are also five matches unbeaten with their last defeat coming on the same day as Swansea’s, also at home and by the same score line – a 1-0 defeat to New Lambton.

United were impressive 4-1 winners away at University last time out and will be looking to continue their unbeaten run with a win over Swansea.

In other matches in round 12, top of the table Warners Bay travel to Mayfield Park to take on Mayfield United on Saturday.

The Panthers eventually defeated a valiant Dudley Redhead last weekend, while Mayfield face their second tough test in as many weeks after losing 2-0 by Swansea in round 11.

University host Plattsburg Maryland at Ray Watt Oval on Saturday looking to bounce back from their defeat to Cooks Hill.

Plattsburg Maryland need to rediscover their early season form if they are to maintain their finals challenge and a win against Uni would put them right back in the hunt.

On Sunday, New Lambton travel to Dora Creek Oval to take on Morisset hoping for another victory to further strengthen their hold on fourth place.

The Eagles have two games in hand on most sides in the competition and will believe they can climb even higher before the end of the league season.

Morisset’s disappointing campaign deteriorated even further last weekend when they were thrashed 8-0 by Cardiff City.

The 2011 grand finalists are currently rock bottom and still the only team yet to register a win.

In the final match of the round, Dudley Redhead host Cardiff City at Lydon Oval.

Hello all. Enjoy the break?

A reminder for wet weather.
Club Exec are NOT to ring other club exec/coaches on match days to see games are on or not.

There's clearly a proceedure where 1900 numbers and websites are to be consulted.
One of our Exec members was woken by some knob 4 weeks ago at 7:30am (he wisely didn't pick up)
and left a V/message, asking if we were on at Athfield or not. (as if we'd be off....)
Said person mentioned what club he was from but didn't leave a name either!
And they accused us of being amateurs....

Warners Bay v Cardiff
res-4-2--Cardiff led early, fill in keeper did well for Cardiff, but in the end Warners to good
1st- 1-1--very interesting game with both sides missing players, Cardiff kept the Bay to only two shots in the 1st half whilst making more of the chances and taking a deserved lead on 40 min mark with a great dead ball strike from 20 yards out. Bay equalised on 44mins after Cardiff reserves keeper dropped the ball from a corner and after a scramble on the line it went in, not sure who scored or if it was an oggy. The 2nd half was similar to the 1st with Cardiff having more of the chances until the last 10 when the bays fitness came thru and they could have pinched it at the end. All up to take a point from the leaders in a game on there ground and with so many out of our side, it will have to do.

There's noting stopping the scores being put in if your the away club either.

Swansea were, yes the better side, more possesion, more shots etc etc etc
tigers scrambled well, got in the way, made them take shots from when they were frustrated.
There goal was dubious pen on 15min, we scored with 15 to go(2nd half), then with 5 left scored another.

But well done to our guys 4 games in 10 days at this level is hard work and a lot of you played with injuries tonight and kept trying all game.
A special thanks to the Ref and linesman who stayed after reffing a Girls game when the Refs didnt show up both had a good game (even if you did get the penalty call wrong lol).
and also well done Warners Bay for hosting the game due to our ground being unavailable and supplying a linesman.

Mid-week shortage of Refs now.
Times really ARE tough....

Good to see clubs still exist with the attitute of playing games whenever and however possible.

Warners Bay vs Morriset

1sts
WB 8 - 1 Morri

Cracker of a morriset oggie for the first goal, and that pretty sealed the game was Warners Bay ran over the top of them to seal the minor premiership. Great year by the bay and hopefully it continues into the finals series

Reserves
WB 7 - 1 Morri

With a large amount of morriset players backing up, combined with what was a fairly hot day, this score could have been anything. Morriset played well in patches but where outclassed by a good display from the bay. This also seals WB reserves as minor premiers

U23's
WB 4 - 0 Morri
Morriset played well in the first 30minutes and created some chances as did the bay, When WB finally strung 4 passes together we did eventually score and led 1-0 at halftime. WB then consolidated their standings with a second after 10minutes. and that was pretty much the ball game.

Big Props to the morriset keeper who played two and a half games. made some great saves and despite being small won pretty much everything in the air he went for.

Andrew Parkinson Previews Round 18 of the Zone Premier League

The final round of the Zone Premier League regular season kicks off this weekend with places in the finals series still up for grabs.

Cardiff City travel to Col Curran Oval to take on Plattsburg Maryland on Sunday needing a win to have any chance of qualifying for the finals.

Cardiff is fifth on 26 points, three behind New Lambton who also have a superior goal difference.

City need to bounce back from their 5-1 hammering at the hands of Warners Bay last time out but with a place in the finals on the line they may have the motivation to do just that.

Plattsburg Maryland have had a good season since being promoted from League One and will want to finish 2012 on a good note by denying Cardiff a finals birth.

The draw has been kind to Cardiff on the final day with their rivals for a top four spot New Lambton having to take on the premiership winners Warners Bay at Adamstown Oval on Sunday.

Warners Bay celebrated their top of the table finish by thumping Cardiff last weekend and will be looking to keep their momentum going leading into the finals series.

New Lambton suffered a tough 1-0 loss to Swansea in round 17, however, a point on Sunday will be enough to see them advance to the post season.

Cooks Hill United hosts Mayfield United at the Newcastle Athletics Field on Saturday needing to win to assure themself of third place.

Cooks Hill won a see-sawing contest away at Dudley 3-2 last time out and another win here would guarantee they avoid Warners Bay at least until the grand-final.

Mayfield United can still finish sixth and will be looking to finish as high up the table as possible with a win against finals bound Cooks Hill.

Morisset will be looking to end their dreadful season on a positive when they take on Swansea at Chapman Oval.

Morisset are the only team without a win in 2012 and will be looking to claim their first three points of the season by upsetting Swansea on the final day.

Swansea has sewn up second place and will be hoping for a polished performance heading into the finals.

The final match of the round sees Dudley Redhead travel to Ray Watt Oval to take on University.

If results elsewhere go against them Dudley can still finish second from bottom so will be desperate for the three points to finish their season on a high.

The Thistles have produced their share of quality football this season with consistency being a telling factor in them not reaching the top four.

University can jump Dudley into eighth with a win and will be confident of victory on their own patch.

W/Bay vs New Lambton

1sts
WB 2-1 NL
New lambton came out of the blocks fired and and ready to go while the bay didnt look to enthusiastic at the start, about 15mins NL hit the lead and continued to maintain the pressure on the game, with 5 to go till half time they had another 1v1 with the keeper but the striker managed to kick it well over the bar from 15yards out. WB where happy for half time, made a couple of changes and went out into the second half with a lot more energy. eventually the pressure told and they grabbed the equalizer through a nice move down the left hand side. Both teams squandered possession and it wasn't the prettiest game to watch, but the bay where looking the more likely to score, and with 10minutes to go knocked in another goal. There was some tense final minutes as NL needed at least a point to guarantee their place in the top four, but the final score finished at 2-1

ressies
WB 5-3 NL
WB where knocking the ball around well in there own half and had a couple of early chances, but some poor passing almost cost them a couple of times as NL look to capitalize on their mistakes. WB eventually scored from 18 yards out as the shot was hit through traffic from a corner. NL had an appeal for a penalty turned down almost on half time, was a strong shoulder to shoulder challenge which you see given some weeks and then other weeks your told to get up. Half time the score was 1-0 to the bay who came out firing at the start of the second half and knocked in a quick fire three goals to lead 4-0. However NL fought back well in the last 15 and with a mix of some poor defending, good attacking a brilliant oggy managed to claw back some respectability to the score and it finished 5-3.

U23's
WB 5-1 NL
With dudley upsetting uni, WB needed at least a draw to secure finals football. And the young lads came out firing from the first whistle, 15minutes in and a optimistic cross was met with a header from 18 yards out, however the NL keeper had tryed to come out and punch it and it bounced slowly into the net for the lead. the second goal was a slick move involving three of the players and was a terrific team goal. After that the flood gates opened and at half time WB lead 4-0. After the break NL had the run of the ball for the first ten and managed to score a goal, but WB defended well and knocked in another goal and finished the game with a 5-1 victory, meaning that WB jumped from 5th to 2nd and like their first grade counter parts, get to play NL two more weeks in a row.

Andrew Parkinson Previews Week One of the ZPL Finals Series

After 18 gruelling rounds the Zone Premier League has reached the finals series with two exciting contests to look forward to over the weekend.

In a very close and often difficult season to predict, just 10 points separated the semi-finalists and the team who finished second from bottom.

In the first semi-final on Saturday, New Lambton will host the premiers Warners Bay at Adamstown Oval hoping to avenge their loss from last weekend.

New Lambton have had a busy season highlighted by a mid-season trip to Coffs Harbour for the finals of the State Cup.

Strongly tipped to be among the teams to beat at the start of the season, the Eagles ended up fourth on the table and will take on Warners Bay on Saturday looking for a reverse of their 2-1 defeat to the Panthers in round 18.

The teams also met back in round nine, with the teams sharing the spoils in a highly entertaining 1-1 draw.

Warners Bay have been a revelation since being promoted from League One in 2012.

The Panthers won the premiership by six points and have played some outstanding football along the way.

A grand final berth is just two matches away and a good result away from home on Saturday would be a massive step towards claiming the league and grand final double.

On Sunday, second placed Swansea will travel to the Newcastle Athletics Field to take on Cooks Hill United in the first leg of their semi-final.

Swansea have been somewhat of a surprise packet this season, finishing second on the table and getting some impressive results which has made people sit up and take notice.

Cooks Hill will be hoping for back to back grand final wins in 2012 but must get past Swansea first to have a chance to defend their crown.

United have slightly had the better of the two teams meetings this season, claiming a 2-1 win at Chapman Oval way back in round three, while round 12 saw the combatants play out a 2-2 draw at the Newcastle Athletics Field.

The winners on aggregate over two legs will meet in the grand final on September 16.

Finals Series Week One Fixtures

New Lambton (4) vs Warners Bay (1) at Adamstown Oval. Saturday September 1, 3pm.

Cooks Hill United (3) vs Swansea (2) at Ray Watt Oval. Sunday September 2, 3pm.

23's uni 1 - cooks hill 1

Interesting game with both team trying hard to hold on to the ball in the first half. Uni possibly shaded the more fancied Cooks Hill outfit and got a deserved go ahead goal late in the first half, and went in to the break 1-0 up after a hard fought battle. Quality of the game degraded significantly in the second half with both teams resorting to long balls trying to find the faster front men. Cooks Hill evened the game with a well taken free kick early-ish in the half. However uni dominated the later stages of the game as Cooks Hill seemed to be quickly running out of legs, and we unlucky multiple times not to grab a go ahead goal. In the end a combination of poor finishing and some bad offensive choices from uni kept Cooks Hill in the game, and uni will probably feel that they should be taking an advantage into the second leg. However the tie being in the balance at 1 all should provide an entertaining 2nd leg.

Reserves
Swansea 1 - Warners Bay 4

This game looked set to be an interesting battle with the Swans being the only team to topple Warners Bay this seasons as the Bay marched to the premiership. Bay started the match in control and took an early lead from a well taken finish. The Bay dominated much of the half, but were unable to find the 2nd goal. Swansea fought their way back into the game finding a way to penetrate the edges of the Bay defence, and were rewarded for their effort on the stroke of half time when the referee awarded what seemed to be a soft penalty. The second half seemed to follow the pattern of the first, with WB dominating possession and field position. WB was awarded their own soft penalty (seemed to be a get square) early in the half and never looked in danger from that moment on. Swansea was reduced to 10 men 15 mins into second half with a defender fouling a runway WB winger. WB scored from the ensuing free kick and grabbed another goal to lead 4-1. WB had multiple chances to grab the 5th goal late and possibly seal the tie in the first leg, however the Swans held on gallantly to at least ensure that the 2nd leg will still be a contest. They will need to turn the fortunes around however to challenge the dominate WB team on the return leg.

First Grade
New Lambton 2 - Warners Bay 5

After a hard fought battle last week (NL going down late 2-1) NL fancied their chances against the premiers in the first leg of this tie. The referee had hardly started his watch when NL found themselves 1 goal down from a slick passing move from WB. WB showed that they were the dominate force in the competition destroying the NL defence almost at will in the first half. A quick fire double from the Bay's striker (including a 35 yard screamer) had the Bay going in 3-0 up at half time. the 2nd half was a much more even battle with NL displaying the form that got them to the semi finals, competing with the bay across the park. The bay grabbed a 4th and it looked as though the scoreboard attenedent would be worked overtime as the game closed. However NL dug in and pulled themselves back into the contest. WB afforded a NL midfielder far to much time outside the penalty area, and a cooly slotted finish had the NL on the board. Minutes later they found themselves back in the game from the penalty spot. WB scrabbled to hold NL out as NL dominated the next 10 minutes of play and threatened a few times to grab a 3rd goal. WB however regained control late, and found what could be an very important 5th goal late in the game. Next week should be interesting battle with NL forced to chase goal, while trying to contain a very slick WB offence.

From what I have seen during this season, both Warners Bay (especially) and Cooks Hill have not entered into banter as far as the players are concerned. I think we have the GF dream match as far as Zpl 1st gde is concerned. WB deserve to be the favourites and a decent pitch with two teams who play good football will be a winner regardless of who wins. A Cooks Hill side aiming for three consecutive GF wins V the standout team in their first year at ZPL level with a star studded lineup. Is WB unbeatable as some say? Im sure other people would have their own opinions and thoughts as deserved.

I defiantly don't think WB are unbeatable, but if they play anywhere near their potential then Cooks Hill will need to be at their absolute best to challenge the premiers. Although Cooks Hill got past Swansea last weekend in a game they mostly dominated, they required a late winner (against a 10 man swans) to get the job done. During the season WB have held the ball strongly and dominated many encounters, however they have also proved that when squeezed (like New Lambton attempted in the 1st leg of the semis) they are also ruthless on the counter. If the right Cooks Hill teams turns up to play this should be a belter of a contest. Interestingly, WB reserves also play in the GF, and if they are able to get past a strong and organised dudley outfit it may provided the lift in the sheds for their firsts team and put the club on course for a memorable day.

WB were far good for for Swansea over two leg (8-3 on aggregate). However their performance last weekend left much to be desired and conceding two soft goals may provide some angst for what has been the dominate team over the course of the season. Dudley on the other hand easily accounted for Cooks Hill (4-0 on aggregate) and although Cooks Hill had numerous chances to get on the score board last weekend, dudley will take plenty of confidence into the decider on the back of 2 post season clean sheets.

under 23's see the interesting situation of the 3rd and 4th place teams battling out the seasons decider. Uni scrapped past Cooks Hill in a very competitive encounter (2-1 on aggregate) however they seemed to clearly outplayed the premiers and deserve their place in the GF. In the other semi final NL took care of Warners Bay in another excellent encounter (3-2 on aggregate). This game went right down to the wire with a red card to the NL keeper (for a brain snap) almost costing the NL team. However they hung on and will face uni in an interesting encounter. It will be interesting to see if the the NL Goal keepers absence will cost them this weekend.

No need to be defiant but well summed up.

I've heard there will be no changes to NEWFM league which I feel is wrong but with the way the Federation stuffs football in NNSW anything is possible.
One day we may have relegation pronation from State League through ZL3

What I'm more interested in is what happens at the other end of the table.
It will be interesting to see what decision Sir Topham Hatt makes in regards to Morisset and Barnsley.

On another note: A great afters party was had by both clubs late last night/this morning at Pests (aka Wests)
after both respective watering holes shut shop early on a Sunday night.
As I left Pests the last thing I saw was the Bay boys toasting their Minor Premiership(s) and Club Championship.
A commendable season. Congratulations to the Bay on your 1st year up in ZPL.

IMO Barnsley deserve to go up and Morisset certainly down.

I understand that Morri had a tough year with players moving on or after seasons start and replacements are hard to find and credit for still taking the pitch. But, what they bought to the competition this year was very disappointing. Many fixtures weren't competitive. This effort is probably exaserbated by the fantastic effort and style which they bought to the comp (L1) last year.

Are there any financial negatives for dropping a div?

The money game is less per win & draw in ZL1 (plus Minor/Maj/GF appearance winnings) but it costs less to enter L1 too.
