That's coz every song these days is either:

Or

Some shitty Mumford and Sons imitators, which is terrible because Mumford and Sons are the ****ing worst.

well fesitvals still want rock bands to headline and pretty much all of the bands that are "worthy" to headline these big festivals are dinosaur bands e.g. soundgarden, tool, metallica, pumpkins, alice in chains, blur, stone roses, even radiohead.

digging the debut lps from two good young australian bands: rufus - atlas, and snakadaktal - sleep in the water.

rufus is a dance/house group who write really catchy tunes. might have heard them a few weeks back on the j's as they had the feature album. saw them last year at the cambo and they were great.

snakadaktal's album has really impressed me. i'd heard "air" and always dug it, not a huge fan of the single "dance bear" from last year and didn't really know what to expect from their album. very pleasantly surprised that it's a real atmospheric, dream pop/shoegaze outing which is exactly what i'm in to right now. great vocals. check it out qmun.

I'd even go and see Green Day if they promise to play Dookie from Start to finish as they have been doing the last few shows.

Gwar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bowling For Soup, Nancy Vandal, Alice in Chains, STP (even with that wanker from that other band I don't like), Korn, Rob Zombie, Rocket from the Crypt

CLUTCH!!!!!!!

Rumour NIN and Maiden to play.

Throw in a few more solid Punk in the next announcement and I'll be a very happy man!

I am a metal fan through and through, but I got dragged to Green Day when they were here on the 21st Century Breakdown tour. ****ing awesome live band. I became a fan after that show after avoiding them since dookie which I hated when it came out.

But Megadeth and GWAR, that alone is worth the price of admission. Gwar should have some new stuff to play by then as well.

Add to that, Living Colour and its a sweet line up. I am hanging for some side shows though. Megadeth/Gwar together or Living Colour with anyone any my credit card will hurt.

Bit different for you lot, seem to only like old metal around here.

For those that don't mind checking other stuff out I present Nicholas Jaar's essential mix.
Used to listen to EM's a fair bit a few years ago and recently decided to check out some, this one was EM of 2012.

Chilled out mix with plenty of touches of orchestral, piano, some jazz stuff.
Opens with a great Twin Peaks gem.

http://www.mixcloud.com/aimnat/nicolas-jaar-essential-mix-bbc-radio1-19-05-2012-wwwaimnatnet/

It's going to be fighting Trentemoller for my new favourite chilled out mix.

Yep! Have never really gotten into NIN (not that I dislike them, just never given them a good run) but love Qotsa.

Anyone else vote in the hottest 100? My listening year has been pretty dreadful compared to normal - haven't been to any gigs & have listened to more mainstream or classical stuff for some reason. But I voted:
Stonefield - Put Your Curse On Me
Birds of Tokyo - Lanterns
Kanye West - Bound 2

Vance Joy - Riptide
Disclosure - F For You (Cannot believe they produced the 'Fire Starts to Burn' abomination)

So, I'm throwing together an originals 80's hair band with my drummer mate. Think Motley Crue, Poison, Billy Idol, etc with a tinge of good old fashioned pub rock.

I need a bass player (Bon pull your finger out and make it happen) and vocalist. Big arse amps a must.

Anyone here want to join in.

Must have a love of beer, football (drummer is a roar fan, what do you expect from a drummer), hair metal and being booed the **** off stages up and down the east coast.

Will play free benefit gigs to raise tifo funds when its together.

Some friends & I "found" (lol) these guys back in around 07 or so - pretty much they played covers back then, plus their Flippers song. I'd say out of my top 5 live music moments of my life, these guys have been 2 of them (Note: the best song I've ever heard live was New World Order by these guys - think it was at a Newy Uni sand/beach party in 08, or maybe Good Vibes in 09 or so?). But honestly, I've rarely rated their recorded stuff. They are the epitome of a band that live vs recorded, are completely different IMO. After the Parlez vous music video, I kind of lost interest in them - the whole Bumblebee song era onwards I've just not been a fan (and to be totally honest, I think I got a bit hipster-feel and lost interest once they became "too famous"). But that Create/Destroy - it's probably the first bit of recorded music I've heard from them that I've totally got into. I love it for some reason! A few of my family are talking about going to Splendour - if they do, and I man up and join them, I'll definately be checking out AvS again.

I spent many a year following, playing in, organizing shows, drinking heavily, with the local heavy scene. however I haven't been to too many local shows of late and now I'm a bit out of the loop..
My mates used to run a late night show at the uni on 2NUR for metal (which wasn't strictly local, but a lot of Australian and local stuff did get a run). I'm not aware of any strictly local radio shows like the one you mentioned in Sydney..

As I said, my experience was mainly with the heavy scene, not all music in Newy.. I don't know of anyone following, reporting and blogging on all aspects of live music around Newy.. Would be a cool thing to get in to and look at though!

We played live on that Metal Show a few times in the late 90's. Wish I still had the tapes.

I'm a bit like you Bon. Spent close to 10 years playing in, organising shows, getting smashed and generally loving the live Newcastle scene. Seemed to really back off though in the early 2000's. I remember in the mid 90's there would be multiple pubs packed out with punters watching original bands. Used to even get enough money to cover strings, transport and more piss than I could (should) drink.

Sadly I haven't played in a band for over 10 years so I am really out of touch with the scene.

But if anyone wants to start a band I have a guitar and like to make noise.

To me it sounds like a very polished, generic rip-off of the late 90's/early noughties angsty metal bands.. However it is well-produced, catchy as fvck, and pretty damn tough at the same time..

I'm actually not so impressed with it at the moment.. A couple of really good big names (FNM, Soundgarden, etc) but other than that, to me, its boring as batshit..
Already turning in to the next BDO..

Yeah they are good, along with Judas Priest and Mayhem (who I didn't think were actually allowed in the country?? haha)..
I still think compared to other years, it is fairly disappointing and crap..
There will be more announcements of bands in the weeks to come, I just hope they get better..

Oh mate, nice..

I've been listening to a lot of Infant Annihilator lately..
Massive pisstake on the whole death-core scene, but insane musicianship.. The drummer is just a nutbag with his gravity blasts..
Been wanting to download their album but I'm too afraid to go searching for it incase I get put on some federal register or come across some unsavoury material.. hahaha

The Rolling Stones tonight :brr:

Honestly one of the best gigs I've been to. These guys, even considering age, are just so fxxxing good. They don't care if they make a mistake or if someone takes a solo 5 mins too long, they don't care if they're too old and skip a note or forget the words, they just play rock'n'roll.

Great show!

Interesting to see that Keith Richards clearly looks the oldest, and Charlie the drummer looks the youngest, but I think they're respectively the youngest and oldest - shows what 50 years of cocaine has done to Keith :rof:

Ok, music nerds, DJ nerds and physics nerds. I've been mulling this over, and would like some other opinions, or if i'm just missing something.

Take for instance, a band: A drummer, bass, Lead and vocals. All 4 are making sound at the same time. Just different sounds.

Now, physics wise, these sound waves, should be affected by wave interference, constructive or destructive... correct?

Ok...So lets take a split second of music where all 4 are making sound at once.
I'm assuming the interference occurs, because you don't exactly hear, a little bit of guitar, bit of vocal then more guitar. It's all at once.
This is tough without pictures. *Goes to work on paint*. Assume the below picture is 4 instruments making their sounds, and they are affected by interference. And the overall amplitude (essentially) is what we hear (in a very simplified)... Correct?

What if, i then go to my computer, and with the whizz bang computers and they programs, i make an artificial sound that is the same amplitude, frequency and pitch as the resultant wave from above, do i end up with an identical sound?

(I had a long drive tonight)

what is the actual question you're trying to ask here?

does interference from other sounds affect how we hear a specific instrument? yes but not my any noticeable degree as the vibration isn't one dimensional

can you make a single wave that sounds exactly like an entire band? yes this is what your speakers actually do - whiz bang computers take a digital signal of ones and zeros and make this waveform with a speaker

Bremsstrahlung

Bit of both, thanks.
Was probably more based on the first part.

But the second part intrigues me. Say you strum a guitar once. You get a sound wave. If you then try to replicate this in a computer program where you design a sound wave and you hear the result, can you replicate the sound without "recording" it.

I think your question is more to do with sound synthesis.

Can a synthesizer exactly emulate an acoustic instrument - no. Can it sound as good or better to you and me than the real thing because we don't know any better - absolutely.

I've been knocking about with syths since the 1970's Moogs, Midas, Prophets, Emulators and so on. Things have come a long way but not to the point you are asking about.

I am a huge triple j fan, i am not a hipster. I listen to it as i hate the ads on commercial radio. Through listing i have come to love a lot of music i have found on there. I don't like Taylor Swift or much pop music i hear on the commercial stations (every so often something comes up) but i can certainly recognize that some have a fair amount of talent.

In saying that, this whole Taylor Swift thing is fair game. The hottest 100 is dubbed as the biggest music democracy in the world. Therefore any and every song should be welcomed if it gets enough votes. It is no different to a situation quite a few years ago when some presenters (adam and wil i think it was) campaigned to get a pretty hilariously awful song by a band call Salmon Hater (heavy metal parody kind of band) into the 100. It got in, no difference here i think. Good luck to tayswift (yep i called her that), i still doubt it will happen though.

admittedly I consider last year to be one of the worst years for music in quite some time, also I haven't really been keeping bang up to date with current musical trends other than listening to FBI, 2SER and JJJ in the car

but when you compare Taylor Swift to most other female solo acts out there, she's infinitely better

Piss weak doesn't begin to describe how poor Taylor Swifts muzak is.

Compare her output with that of Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, or Carole King at the same age and her lack of talent becomes even more obvious.

As a business Swift is succesful no doubt - but as an artist her songs are more akin to a child writing about a lost teddy bear than they are of people and relationships.

The Harvard MBA's have a hell of a lot to answer for when this crap floats to the top.

I put in this category basically any female singer under 40. Most rap/hip-op shiate and boy/girl bands.

Today's hottest 100 can surely only be a victory for hipster haters.
Scenarios:
1. T.Swift wins and everyone dies.
2. Bruno Mars wins but the hipster presenters only refer to it as a Mark Ronson song.
3. Hilltop Hoods win and become the first artist to win both the Hottest 100 AND Kyle and Jackie O's super dooper awesome mega Pepsi Max countdown song in the same year.

Let's just hope there's tonnes of silly bushranger bearded heads exploding all over Australia some time later today.

Solid band in their day.

Ex wives demanding more money or the IRS chasing them ?

That's the usual explanation for bands coming out of hibernation after this many years.

Seriously though I don't think any band in history has ever made a comeback album remotely close to the quality of their best work after ten years off - let alone 18 years or whatever it would be for FNM.

The very best bands have around ten years in them at the most and thats it. Beyond that they make so much money and live such extravagent lifestyle that they soon enough forget why they became musicians in the first place.

This is generally true..
I gotta say, i was really disappointed with their latest single "Motherfvcker".. It was ok, but kinda boring and just forced.. If any new band had released it noone would have given a crap, cause you got FNM doing it, you had fanboys whacking off in a frenzy..
I'll still be purchasing the album, as I hope they can still pull out some of the old magic.. I won't be expecting a King For A Day, Fool For A Lifetime classic album though..

I had the luxury of getting the train to Sydney on Sat morning to attend a best mates bucks weekend, but the train ride down was a real eye opener.. Very interesting dichotomy of music fans actually..

There were two Future blokes in front of me chewing their jaws off and three metal dudes talking about arpeggios just to the right of where I was sitting..
Here is a transcript of the conversation when old-mate short-shorts made eye contact with them:

Future Guy - "Sick Metallica shirt cvnt, where you goin' to?"
Metal Dude - "Ummm.. Soundwave?"
FG - "Don't know what that is.. Whats that in the container in your hand? I've got pills in this little box here if you wanna buy some"
MD - "Its a packed lunch and sunscreen"
FG - "Can I get the plastic off your packed lunch so I can wrap me pills in it, I need to shelf em and get em into the venue???"
