Been hearing a fairly catchy song at work over the past few weeks. No idea who it was so I interneted it and Lo and behold.

It was 5 seconds of summer.

I always thought they were some sort of One Direction type boy band but they are actually a legit talented bunch of kids.

Good for them.

Anyone else getting to the Cambo tonight to see Psycroptic and Goatwhore?
If you are in to your metal, Croppers are one of the best going round for tech death metal.. Absolutely MASSIVE in Europe and USA, not bad for some blokes from Tassie..
I'm hoping to get down there after training..

Oh nice man.. Thy Art Is Murder are awesome musically, but have a bit of a reputation as loose unit d!ckheads.. haha..
Back around 05/06 we played a few shows with Psycroptic and they were just awesome down-to-earth pisshead blokes.. Great times..

I've got a mate who likes to pretend he is in to metal more than me, when I asked him if he was going to the show tonight, he confirmed he would be in Sydney seeing Ed Sheeran..

New song released by Between The Buried And Me recently for their upcoming album Coma Ecliptic..
A lot more melodic than previous albums, but so far I like it.. Huge Mike Patton influence in the vocals with less screaming and more clean, musically they are just ridiculous.. So many influences you could name for the prog sound they have shifted towards..

Lindemann has released their first single, with debut album coming out next week..
Side project of Till Lindemann (singer of Rammstein) and Peter Tägtgren (just about everything in Hypocrisy)..
The first minute of the song, I couldn't work out if it was a massive pisstake or what, hahaha..

Oh yeah, I should probably warn that if you have lots of kids, don't have a sense of humour, or are offended easily, then probably shouldn't watch/listen to it..

They did an ok cover of the old Kraftwerk song the model - but that's about it for me.

When I was a wee lad they played BDO, I'd nowt heard much of their stuff but my mate was all like "they are a bit of a show", then within 10sec of the first song old mate has set himself on fire and was giving it the big ones.

Yeah I was at that show too (minus the acid. hahaha), their live shows with all the pyrotechnics/fake phallus', etc were immense..

I guess you could call it a gimmick, a show, whatever.. From a musicians point of view, their songs could be considered quite simple, however they still write extremely catchy songs.. (They aren't exactly being labeled as tech-metal, haha)
Its all subjective.. Nirvana's songs are rock-bottom basic but I wouldn't say they were sh!t..

Musicality aside, I've also got plenty of respect for a band who can be around for 20+ years, and have the original and same 6 guys for the entire time..

Drummer tried to stage dive and didn't quite make it to the crowd! Ouch.

Also in regards to Dillinger Escape Plan, i'll back up Bon's claims. Saw them at Soundwave whilst waiting for someone else and had my socks blown off within about 10 secs of them walking on stage. Never witnessed so much intensity from a live band before or since.

catching up on some new releases today

didn't have much hope for the new Foals album because i thought the singles were a bit generic. have to say it's actually pretty good and is probably just behind Total Life Forever (my fav and their best) on first listen.

now onto Beach House's new one - which has the lamest name ever - Depression Cherry. unsurprisingly it's great; they're one of the best going around for me, if you're into that sort of thing i guess. their sound hasn't changed much but they don't really need to.

also spun the new FKA Twigs ep. she's a goddess. love it.

new Dre is pretty sweet too.

spotify is amazing. i need to upgrade to premium but every time i try it comes up with a blank window for some reason :'(

The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour aired from 1969 to 1972 in the USA. EDIT: They also did a few tv shows in Early 80's so this could be where it is from

Glen Campbell was probably the most sought after session guitarist in the USA during the 1960's. He could play anything and play it anyway you wanted it played.
On his own records it's all pretty laid back just doing it for the money type stuff. But on other peoples records he's a beast.

Jerry Reed most people know from Smokey and the Bandit but Chet Atkins named him a CGP [Certified Guitar Player] as he was practically untouchable when it came to finger style guitar.

Elvis Presley covered Guitar Man and they could not find a single session player in Vegas that could play the licks. So they rang Reed up and he flew in from his fishing trip and did the gig.

Another great Guitarist of that era is Roy Clark.

A lot of those sort of bands are actually releasing a downloadable "instrumental" version of the album these days, as they realise that a lot of people love the music but not so much the vocals..

Ok, when I read that the other day, my first thoughts went to some of the classics that I know you would already be familiar with, like Opeth, In Flames, etc.. (Although they aren't completely clean vocalled, and arguably less death-y)..
A band I've been digging for a while now Conquering Dystopia play heavy technical stuff that is all instrumental.. (A bit of a supergroup - guitarist for Arch Enemy/Nevermore, drummer for The Faceless, bassist for Cannibal Corpse, and Keith Merrow who is a freak.. haha)
I don't even know how they play stuff like this on guitar.. Especially all the arpeggio stuff around the 3:15 mark..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdAyDntlkQ4

There are plenty of bands I could recommend that sound or play similar to The Black Dahlia Murder, although it is tough to think or find any that are instrumental or completely mellow vocals.. Part of the genre is about screaming your tits off I guess.. haha..
As I said, a lot of them release instrumental versions of albums, or have instrumental one off songs on an album (and I can recommend plenty of them, love it!), but not many that I can say are completely clean..

Sometimes when there are keyboards and things involved all at once the music just gets a bit too "busy" for me, but this is tops..

Still waiting to hear back about my amp/head, although I was warned it would be a few weeks before they could diagnose the issues..

I took an acoustic to Musos for a set up. You could drive a bus between the 12th fret and the strings when I gave it to them - and you could still do it when I got it back.

Furthermore, they don't even write a report detailing the measurements of the setup so you can replicate it in the future.

Did they give you the measurements when they set up your bass or was it just a case of here it is ?

What sort of an acoustic was it? I'm assuming it wasn't a cheapie if you were taking it there for a setup/servicing?
I didn't get measurements, however they fixed internal wiring, tested the active pickups (i was afraid they had rusted a bit due to ocean air), tightened everything, fixed the bridge, polished it, replaced strings with gauging of my choice, etc.. I know these are all relatively basic things to do yourself, but once every few years I like to send it in just to make sure I haven't missed anything and to get that "freshened" feeling.. haha

I haven't jammed with my big amp in years (only my small one on low volumes while practising at home) and after pulling it out all I was getting was hectic farty disgusting tones.. Plugged DI to record some of it to see if it was my cab or head, and it still came out horrible.. Which made me question if it was the head or my actual bass.. I'm assuming I've got some sort of corrosion in the head, or blown a tube.. In which case could be cheaper to get a whole new head. Not happy if thats the case..

You did well with the guitar. They did a lot of work on it - and it would have taken a bit of time as well. The fact they don't provide measurements of changes they make and so on though still gives me the impression that they are not serious about what they do.

The acoustic is a Solid Mahogany Maton Mini. I only use it for noodling on the lounge while I watch TV - so nothing too speical or serious about it.

With respect to valve amps I have had them for over 40 years.

Tubes do not die over time only through usage. Power tubes depending on plate voltages used can last 5000hrs for very good ones not pushed too hard - but average is around 1000hrs and a few hundred hours for Chinese types pushed hard - if you are lucky.
Pre-amp / input tubles like 12ax7, 12au7 or other dual triodes can last for 10,000hrs even longer.

I'm guessing your problem is very simple.

1. You need to check / adjust the bias
2. You have dust or corrosion in the tube sockets.
3. You might have a failed Cap - but 99/100 times a visual inspection will answer that for you. Looking for bulging or crack in severe cases.

One thing you don;t want to do though is run the head without a speaker connected. The reason is that the output transformers need to be coupled / connected to a load / speaker. So if you do run the head without a load long enough you will eventually burn out the output transformers [Reason: Without a speaker connected the impedance to the Output transformer will tend towards infinity] - that is an expensive problem.

Oh very nice, Maton's are beautiful.. I've been thinking about getting a Maton acoustic, one of their lower end ones like the S60, just to do the same sort of thing, a nice strum/fumble around at home..
Not entirely sure yet though..

As for the amp, I really hope it is something "simple" like that.. I don't like the idea of forking out another couple of grand for a new head.. (although its a good excuse to have a look at some nice Ampeg badboys.. hahah) I've had the amp for about 10 years now, but definitely have not had it going for 5000hrs+.. (It has got a 12ax7 pre-amp and EL84 output)
For any of your guesses, do you think it would be an expensive job? I've got no idea..

If you want an acoustic go to Jacks / Music Head Quarters and play a Larivee acoustic. They are a lot better than a Maton acoustically and price wise are very similar.
Matons are great plugged in but can be a little overbuilt / tightly constructed which doesn't equate well for them acoustically.

Valve amps are very simple. These guys are supposed to be very good and are authorized repairers for a few well known valve amps brands: http://www.centauriaudio.com.au/
They are at Waratah. I don't know them but have heard good things. Might be worth giving them a call.

If you ever wanted to see the fine line between genius, crazy and rebellious here is a good starting point.
Back when artists were announced to perform the Superbowl halftime show, probably the most watched musical event every year, they usually did a press conference to promote it.
Anyway the year Prince does it he gets announced, walks onstage with a full band and asks for questions.
3 words into the first question he cuts the reporter off with a screaming guitar then just jams for the next 12 minutes.
If you know anything about the NFL and the way they do things this was such a slap in the face to the authority and him just saying "screw it, I'm here to play and thats it".
In this day and age where music is so corporatised (which is no problem, everyone needs a dollar), he was a true rebel who continuously did **** the system, not just talk about it.

Red Hot Chili Peppers released their new single, Dark Necessities, as a preview to their new album coming out in mid June.

I don't mind it. It's pretty similar to their more recent songs - a distinct difference from the likes of Otherside and Californication.

You would think this would be one of, if not their last album to be released surely.

Yamaha CD-S3000 and a Marantz 8B amp hooked up to Triangle Magellan Duetto Bookshelf speakers.

But I find myself listening to a lot of internet radio these days through the computer and a set of powered Yamaha HS-50 monitors which can make your ears bleed with poorly mixed / mastered material.

This is sort of music related.

I want to set my turntable up in my Office. I have some Yamaha bookshelf speakers rated at 30 Watts.

Can anyone suggest a small, relatively cheap, amp that I can stick my turntable through. Not looking for super high quality amplification as the speakers aren't there and I have my main stereo for that.

I was looking at one of these from Topping that have some reasonable reviews. But was curious as to whether anyone else had any suggestions.

KsE, such an amazing live band.. Hilarious dudes, original singer Jesse has come back to join them again..
(I know this clip has their old singer Howard going, but for anyone who hasn't seen them live before, it gives a good indication of how good they sound live and what idiotic stuff they get up to on stage, haha)

Oh yeah, a Howard fan ay?? Did you ever listen to Blood Has Been Shed? (Howard and Justin's original band?) Amazing stuff..
I think they are both awesome, very happy that Jesse has rejoined though.. Howard has a better clean voice, whereas I think Jesse has a better scream..

I'm sure I've posted it before, but this song in particular is just idiotic with the continuous triplets and time changes. No idea how the guitarists or drummer carry it on for so long..
Have seen them live a few times and they just makes it look so easy..

Anyone know the best or decent places online (or in person) to purchase vinyl??

For the new stuff: Birdland in Sydney - www.birdland.com.au . Great little shop owned and run by music lovers not business types.

If you want new vinyl directly then Mobile Fidelity [MOFI] have a solid catalog of good quality recordings at very reasonable prices.

http://www.mofi.com/

If you are after 2nd hand Vinyl then: Garage sales, deceased estates, Charity Shops.. and so on for the used stuff. Actual record stoes will charge you a fortune and the quality is far from guaranteed.

If you are truly prepared to go the vinyl route then go 2nd hand records to make it worthwhile, buy in bulk and sell what you don't want to cover your costs.

Don't even consider the shit they sell at JB Hifi. It's poorly handled, overpriced, and sounds more digital than a good CD.

As someone that has owned over 5000 Vinyl LP's my question is what are you after and why on Vinyl ?

To get Vinyl to work costs a fortune and the ritual of maintaining the software is a complete pain in the arse.

For convenience get a mid priced SACD Player and get into SACD and CD because it's a lot easier to manage and a hell of a lot cheaper as well.

This is what I have: http://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio-visual/hifi-components/cd-players/cd-s3000_a/?mode=model

It's about 20% of the cost of a decent Turntable, Phono Stage, and moving Coil - and the difference in sound quality is negligible at best.

Sound wise - a mid range SACD player as described above will eat any Turntable anyone here who's name isn't Hawk can afford.

There's music on there I don't like. And some hosts I don't like, but in general I like it more than other stations when I'm in the car. I've found its broadened my musical tastes a bit by exposing me to songs and genres I wouldn't have otherwise listened to a while ago. And the main reason I like it is there are a lot of songs I hear on there that aren't necessarily huge songs or massively popular, but are refreshing to me to hear because they're just different and I wouldn't hear them anywhere else.

I do agree that the directions of JJJ and pop music at the moment are a lot closer than in the past. Is this coincidence or is it just that Triple J has become a lot more popular in the last 10 years and so it pretty much is the mainstream now - whatever is a big success on there, the commercial stations have no issues about chucking into super rotation on their own playlists. Personally I'd like the balance to be a bit more back towards rock and guitar bands than it is at the moment but I don't mind the producer/electronic style prevalent at the moment too much.

Out of curiosity, what drives you guys' interest in heavy/metal music? I've never really gotten into it. The themes? Technical/musicianship side of it? Just the louder/heavier/more dense soundscape of it?

There is heavy and then there is HEAVY. I grew up listing to Blue Cheer and Vanilla Fudge then moved onto the bands that copied them like Deep Purple and Black Sabbath. The thing great about these bands is not only were they great musicians they also represented the way we felt about the world at the time. From then the torch was passed to Iron Maiden and a host of other bands - the playing became more neo-classical and all but the theme behind the music was always a case of us versus them.

Meanwhile the Punk movement hit and we had The Stooges, Ramones, Paty Smith, Sex Pistols, Saints, GBH, Radio Birdman.... and so on. The hard rock and heavy metal went to the back of the play list for a couple of years

By the time Metallica arrived there wasn't much that had,'t already been done. Sure they played well and had some great riffs but overall they stood for nothing and didn't bring anything new to the table.

Fast forward to the extreme HEAVY sound today and while I'm not a fan I can appreciate that it must relate to it's fan base much the same way as Sabbath and Deep Purple did to me as a teenager.
There are still pretenders out there - from Germany who can't play for shit - but they represent an audience more so than the mainstream who represent whatever their Harvard MBA puppet masters demand

Oh - and the concerts - there is nothing like hard rock / heavy metal at 120db. Even if you are not into it - go to a concert and you soon will be - Home stereos don't do this music justice.

Not having a crack at your individually, but this is a common theme I see from the generation that thinks triple j has "gone to shit".

Triple J plays a lot of rock and guitar music, especially from young Australian bands. They are still huge on new and independent music. But the reality is rock is not the dominant force it used to be in youth culture right now.

Electronic music and hip hop are getting more popular every day and quite frankly the quality of music coming from those genres is consistently higher than the rock scene at the moment. I can't think of many rock bands that have come out in the last decade that have captured the world the way a Radiohead or U2 have in yesteryear.

The j's first priority is to stay relevant musically and cater for what young people want.

Yeah I don't disagree with anything you've said. And like I said I don't mind the mix that's there currently. Tash Sultana, D.D. Dumbo, Harts are just a few guitar based artists that have come up in the last year through the station.

But yeah rock is definitely not as big as it used to be. Read an article a couple days ago analysing the claims that Triple J is more "mainstream" than it used to be

which pretty much proved its not. What it did show is that the more mainstream music it was playing 10-15 years ago was a lot of rock stuff, your Powderfinger, RHCP, Green Day etc where now its as you said, the "Urban" music, electronic etc

It's funny being 50 plus now - many friends move onto "middle of the road" stuff and for some reason think Bon Jovi is the greatest heavy metal band of all time or love things like Michael Buble - ffs. The ballsiness of watching Thorpe, Slade, Purple, Sabbath, Quo, Hush et al is forgotten as people chuck out their LPs.

Like Dunster, I don't think anything matches the thrill of loud, guitar/bass/drums rock. Not just your ultra heavy, but any of the great hard rock bands live, at full volume, is a thrilling experience.

I was thinking the other day, the problem I have with electronic music is its "moderness".....the sound from "You Really Got Me" and "Satisfaction", for example, was achieved by slicing speakers with razor blades - inventive thinking. Then the complexities of tape loops for "Strawberry Fields" or "I'm Not In Love". These are things that can be done electronically in a home studio now. I used to have to drive down to Sydney to use equipment to cut and splice tape!

Of course my thoughts are clouded by life experience - modern music is for now and the youth have different tastes.

Hope I die before I get old.......

All music 'trends' are just a cycle anyway.

Late 90's was when erryone was like "BHUH TOO MUCH DANCE MUSIC DANCE MUSIC IS NOT REAL MUSIC BHUH".

So the pushback in the early 2000's became Limp Bizkit and Coldplay.

Be careful what you wish for.

how is it that you can find 3 million people that say they were at the guns and roses concert at eastern creek in 1993, but you can't find one person that was at the big day out when limp bizkit played and there was clearly 100,000 blokes there :yap:

Me too.

Actually 2 things I remember apart from Limp Bizkit (because LSD) were Killing Heidi having backup dancers on stage which was the wackest thing I'd ever seen, then Coldplay being really good.

What the **** was going on in my life back then?

It's just as simple as they are catering to the needs of their target demographic (15-30).
My old man tunes into 2HD because they play music he grew up with. Other "middle aged" stations like NEWFM ("Old and new hits!") and Triple M ("for the blokes") cater specifically for their audiences.
2Day FM etc all contribute funding to the Justin Bieber, One Direction, Adelle concerts and headlining acts that come to our shores and accommodate the screaming girls.

Triple J focusses on the 15-30 age bracket and provides a myriad of different genres of music (especially if you listen after 9pm). The 15-30 bracket has a large expendable income (no mortgage, no kids, new to employment etc) and provides festivals to take advantage of this. Big Day Out was the first "festival" i went to and it's focus was rock on the main stages, dance in the "boiler room" and indie/triple j bands on the smaller stages. That's what the people wanted. Now, the musical tastes have somewhat shifted. Every 2nd person is a DJ, or hipster/indie. And this is what the station caters for. If it remains the same and aims to serve the 15-30 target audience now, and continue to please them as they grow older (by playing the same music) they will gradually lose the younger listeners as a new musical focus/phase is introduced.
The rock category is still reasonably well represented, though slightly different to what most are used to. Now Violent Soho, Modern Baseball, Amity Affliction, Parkway Drive, Catfish and the Bottlemen are the modern day rock'n'roll.

Given the increasing popularity of the station, amongst the 15-30 year olds, "mainstream" radio media 2day FM, Nova, NXFM etc see what is most popular on triple J and give it a play on their own. Triple J still uncovers bands and music that is different. It's listeners respond so positively, it makes other stations take notice and play what is popular. Thus "pop" music.

I was at the BDO on that day but I was in the boiler room

Carl Cox was doing the set that continued after the main stage ended and the hoards of bog shitcunce flooded in

religious people might be able to help with the analogy but it felt like that bit of the bible where the mongols smash their way into the garden of eden and wreck up the place

2JJ opened up in 1975 playing Skyhooks. That's essential a mainstream band who's main following was teenage girls between 13 and 16.

The rest of us in 1975 were listening to the greatest album Led Zeppelin would ever make, and dropping microdots while we ****ed about with the pop up album cover.

Hence, I think playing Australian more so than offring alternative music was and still is what JJJ is all about

Remember the first song played was "banned" from commercial radio "You Just Like Me Cos I'm Good In Bed"....2JJ was about being controversial and different to commercial. They also played Skyhooks tracks "Smut" which was about jerking off into a bag of Twisties, and "Why Doncha All Get F****d - as the man says, "far out!". The bands then all had naughty songs that couldn't be played on good old 2NX and 2KO - Hush had "Get Rocked" which the kids changed of course and Ted Mulry Gang had "Dinah" which was about a girl spreading her legs. These are songs that were banned at the time!

They still do promote Australian music. Way way more than any other station and have implemented a lot of initiatives to help further develop Aus music.
And they still do play a lot of music that is otherwise censored/not played on mainstream stations.
Idk that they have changed, but the music has.

I used to go see the Oils at War and Peace in Parramatta in the late 70's - they were brilliant back then - It was more surf music than it was a political at that stage - but it kicked arse.

The first Album is still great even 39 years later. Can't believe it was so long ago now.

The first Oils song I ever heard and still my favourite.

As long as Mick and Keef are alive I can never feel old - they were gigging before I was born.

George Harrison once said that the music you listen to between 13-25 years old shapes your life and I agree - once you get to my age you have such a huge collection you don't need to listen to new stuff!

Smashing Pumpkins is about the newest band I'm into and they started nearly 30 years ago [I only got on board when Parksey recommended them to me a few years back].
Apart from that I'm probably too old and out of touch to listen to the new stuff out today, or I simply don't have enough time for what I already own to look for something new to listen to.
I like a few songs from the past 20 years or so - but usually it's because they remind me of something I listened to 40 years ago or more.
There's probably more great music out there today than in any other time in history. It was just easier to find it when I was a teenager.

$10 schooners! ffs.

Thoughts on Protest the Hero? I gave them a bit of a listen as the dudes from Propaghandi go on about them (and propaghandi are legends), but it just didn't quite get there for me.

You are forgetting Tuesday Night at the Palais after 11pm. Before 11pm they had male strippers on for the girls. The chicks were dripping for Cawk by the time the show was over. So you basically waited out the front

wearing speedos with your hands above your head and waited for some action.
