world xi is fixed. How there can only be 3 Bayern players and no Dortmund players and still be Ramos, Alves, Xavi and Iniesta. I thought it was supposed to be the players that performed the best in the year

Ronaldo is just lucky he got injured when he did or he would have been a shoe-in.

Brisbane Roar's female goalkeeper got the womens one

I've got a little Ballon d'Or story of my own related to her.

It starts with Retro in Germany last July. I watched all the German games of Sweden 2013 Women's Euro with my father-in-law on the box. During the course of the games the commentators mention that German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer is off to Brisbane Roar after the tournament to play in the Aussie W-League. A few games later, Germany wins the tournament. Next couple of days of course the local small town rag has a few photos in the national sport section; one in particular of Angerer - and Retro brags to the old boy "I'm going to get her signature on these papers". "Yeah...right mate. No chance." is pretty much the reply when translated.

6 months later: Women Jets lose 2-6 to Brisbane Roar at Wanderers on Sat, Jan 4th.
What was I doing? Retro is on Hols with the family, nursing sunburnt thighs from Diamond Beach the day before and rushing to pack up a tent site at Wallamba River after lunch, just so he can go see the Men's Jets lose that night to AfterBirth Glory. (Chris Harold...oo are ya?) Quite frankly, I forgot about the women's Jets v Roar game. Opportunity missed....or so I though.

Track forward to last Sunday's Asian Cup 1 year launch at Wheeler Place.
Retro attends, hangs back after everything is done and dusted to get photos with the Cup, along with a certain fellow KB United nutter (init: DB) who's apparently scanned every KB United home program. A couple of the Jets W-League players who attended are still there. Retro asks a player (I find out later from DB via email that it's Lauren Brown) about Brisbane Roar, Angerer and that the opportunity has been lost to get the signature. Brown states that she played with Roar last year and keeps in contact with former team mates and can organise the signatures. I arrange to meet her at training: Adamstown Oval on Tuesday arvo. Done.

Monday morning, Retro bundles off to Hamo PO to organise self addressed envelope etc and who's in the PO? DB! Funny co-incidence, seeing I'd never met the bloke before Sunday. So, stamped envelope for Lauren Brown to post off? Check. Self addressed envelope for Angerer to post back? Check. 2 newspaper pages from July 29th and 30th edition of the Ostsee Zeitung, 2013? Check. Nice letter asking for legendary goalkeeper to sign newspapers? (1/2 in English, 1/2 in German) Check.

Tuesday morning: Retro checks the latest fitbh news on the net to see that said goalkeeper is a Ballon d'Or winner :fright: and the first goalkeeper to win it! Retro then prints out 2 more photos: Angerer with sad sack Cristiano Ronaldo (http://www.couriermail.com.au/sport/football/brisbane-roar-wleague-goalkeeper-nadine-angerer-wins-womens-ballon-dor/story-fnii0fc3-1226801169758), ammends letter and sticks them all in the envelope to give to Lauren Brown Tue 5:30.
Well, the look on her face when she came up to me said it all. We both had a laugh at the synchronicity of it. All the squad new of Angerer's award from the night before. So, Brown takes my little parcel of hope and says she'll post it off to the appropriate person. TY Lauren Brown.

Now, with any luck and in a few weeks time, Retro should be in possession and the proud owner of the signature's of a current Ballon d'Or winner!

Some bloke also won 7 Tour De Frances and deceived the world with lies and denials before it all came crashing down on him.

the fact that people like Daniel Garb vote on this says all you need to know about its relevance.

Johnny Warren medal is all that matters.

I agree 100%. Disgrace that not a single Spurs player was in the top 11. A side that made the Champions League Final of all things and a side that features one of the most lethal strikers of all time.

Shameful.

And just think.. that's the greatest side you'll ever get to see in Spurs colours and they can't even break into the top 10.

Even we got one in at 20 and this is the worst side I've ever witnessed in Arsenal colours.

In all seriousness tho. The Ballon was already pretty bad but know it beyond a joke.

No matter which way you look at it the rankings don't make any sense, football wise. Winning trophies don't seem to matter as much as individual stats... but then they do in other cases. International doesn't matter for Messi but then it does in other cases (Mahrez or Modric last year for instance). Goal scoring seems to be a huge factor, unless your Lewandowski. Winning the EPL isn't important, but winning La Liga is. Usually it's more important to win the UCL but this year that didn't matter because it wasn't a Spanish team....
I mean it's a team sport so the award is already useless, but it sucks that they keep it going when it just trashes what actually happens throughout the year.

It's an individual award in a team sport. It's always going to be contradictory.

TBF Ronaldo or Messi should win it every year as they are still the 2 best players lacing up their boots. De Bruyne, Mbappe, Sterling, Suarez, Aguero, Van Dijk etc are all the best of the rest but none of them even come close to those 2 players ability.

Why? What did spurs win or what spurs player had an astronomical season?

Just show him how Eden Hazard won Europa League player of the year after playing 2 full games and scoring 2 goals. Thats a good way to explain how to win these individual trophies.

As Frodo said the whole thing is irrelevant. Unless you're South American or speak Spanish you will not feature.

Or don't score 54 goals in a season. Just maybe
