The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets have named a 16-man squad to face Melbourne Heart at AAMI Park on Friday night.

Jets head coach Gary van Egmond has made two changes to the squad that drew 1-1 with Melbourne Victory at Hunter Stadium last weekend.

Kew Jaliens returns from suspension, replacing Josh Mitchell, while Nick Ward has been added to the squad in place of Nathan Burns who has returned to Korea following the expiration of his loan deal with the Jets.

“Kew will come back in, but it will be a fairly similar squad,” van Egmond said.

“Obviously Nathan has gone so we need to add a little bit further up the park and we’re looking at a couple of solutions.

“We have young Goodwin obviously starting and there’s (James) Brown, (James) Virgili or maybe Ruben (Zadkovich) pushing further forward

“There’s a couple of options for us in that kind of area.

Van Egmond indicated that Michael Bridges will once again be used to give the Jets added attacking impetus off the bench towards the back end of the contest.

“As an impact player, I think Bridgey does a really good job,” van Egmond said.

“He comes on and gives us a little bit of something different and he’s been doing a good job of that.”

Van Egmond said the addition of Ward would give the Jets added versatility, most likely off the bench.

“He’s coming along very nicely, he hasn’t played a game for a long time so he’s probably not ready to be thrown into the deep end,” van Egmond said.

“He can play anywhere in the midfield and he gives you some versatility. He’s a good player who scores goals from midfield and that’s what you want.”

Van Egmond said new signing Joel Griffiths was still a couple of weeks away from returning to Hyundai A-League action.

“Joel won’t play this weekend, he’s not physically ready yet,” van Egmond said.

“He hasn’t done a great deal since the end of November. He’s been for a few runs and as we know he’s a pretty naturally fit bloke, but this week is just too much of a rush.

“The last thing we want is an injury and we won’t be risking him this weekend.

“He’s going to be working hard between now and next week and we’ll play it by ear whether he gets game time against the Coast or the week after.

“As a player you get more confidence when you have those types of players with you in the training group and obviously on the park with you on the weekend.

“He’s a winner, he’s got a good mentality and he scores goals and that’s exactly what we need.”

Newcastle Jets squad: 1. Mark BIRIGHITTI (gk), 3. Taylor REGAN, 4. Kew JALIENS, 5. Ben KANTAROVSKI, 6. Zenon CARAVELLA, 8. Ruben ZADKOVICH (c), 9. Emile HESKEY, 11. Craig GOODWIN, 13. Joey GIBBS, 16. Jacob PEPPER, 17, James VIRGILI, 18. James BROWN, 19. Michael BRIDGES, 21. Sam GALLAWAY, 20. Ben KENNEDY (gk).

The Referee – Alan Milliner
• The last Jets v Heart game Alan Milliner refereed was the last time the Jets beat the heart in Melbourne.
• Milliner recently attained his FIFA badges.
• We have never lost a match under Milliner. We have 3 wins and 2 draws. (W-D-W-D-W)
• Milliner is not a card-happy ref. He has given out a total of 9 yellow cards in the last 3 Jets games.
• The Jets have NEVER conceded a first half goal in any match refereed by Milliner.

GVE has them too scared to be aggressive. Make a mistake, you're off.

Galloway + Virgilli = Aids + Face

His first touch this match (or there abouts) and he dribbles backwards past a player he was ahead of, tries to pass back to Gallaway and passed it out!?

Very negative.

The Dunster

Galloway - Thinks he's Beckenbauer - unfortunately, he's not. Needs to stop trying to dribble the ball from one end to the other and just pass the ****ing ball.
Caravella - Takes to long to work out what to do - spins left - spins right - then loses the ball. Defensively, he's invisible.
Pepper - not a right back.
Virgilli - should have had a sleep on the team bus rather than in the middle of the game.

We are lucky the Heart are shit otherwise we'd be down by half a dozen.

I was going to go and support them away at Central Coast. Won't waste my money now.

Thank God Birra was on form tonight. For those that think Lord Griff is the answer, just take a look at how much ball Heskey gets. I reckon Griff will get just as much and even with his God like (if not match fit) powers there will be sweet FA he can do for us.

Start the season with 1 rb and 1 rookie left back, maybe a little cover with Goodwin but still, neither proven at a-league level.
Combine that with a young center back and it's a recipe for disaster.

Pepper put absolutely no pressure on the crosser for their second goal, you can tell from his body language that he really was not making any serious attempt to block the cross, he didn't even chuck out a leg ffs. Before the balls hit he's turning around to see where it goes.

Bon

Few thoughts on last night:
- Ward and Brown actually looked alright when they came on.. At least they were giving it a go..
- When will GVE realise that pepper is NOT a fullback.. poor bastard is being played out of position and made to look a goose..
- FFS we can't start games with BOTH Goody and Virgili on the field. Two blokes who look down on confidence, weak in defense. I don't mind them coming off the bench and running at tired fullbacks in the 80th minute..
- In that first half, we didn't even look like scoring, you could have fit a jumbo jet in the gaps in our midfield..
- I'm not sure where all the bagging of Caramello is coming from. I thought he actually did alright compared to most of the others (which isn't saying much!). Yeah he held on to it a lot, but when noone else around him was making movement, what else was he supposed to do?

Anyway, I'm trying to forget this shit. I'm going back to the mindset that I started the season with - No hopes = No disappointments..

Look at the team we started with, a rookie LB and a young CM playing at RB. Our two wingers are both young, pretty much un-proven at a-league level and lacking confidence..
These are critical areas for the team both in attack and in defence.

It was a completely make-shift side, yes you can say we're missing key players at u21 or what ever that comp is, but you also have to say our squad is just not up to scratch.

Leaning on youth is one thing, you need to mix it with proven experience though in order for it to work.

Edit: I can't help but keep wondering why we didn't keep Ritter ffs.

The problem with Caravella is that when he receives the ball he stops dead with it and turns left or right or a combination of both, stops, and then starts the procedure all over again.
This makes him a sitting duck for defenders because they know he's not going to release the ball straight away.
It also gives defenders time to close down any player that were in free space, making it near impossible for Caravella to find someone to pass it to.
If Caravella does manage to pass the ball, the player receiving it will either be surrounded by opposition players or forced to play the ball defensively rather than attack the opposition.

At GCU it was never an issue because Caravella had Culina who was very strong on the ball to dig him out of the shit. Although Caravella was better then than he is now.

This is probably why Adelaide couldn't get rid of him fast enough given the style of football they now play would not have worked with Caravella on the pitch.

Losing Hoole, Brillante, Taggart, Chapman, and Burns was never going to be ideal. I'd even be happy to play Chapman ahead of Caravella as a mid.

Chapman played most of his junior football as a mid.

Brillante, burns & neville are far more important to this team than first thought

The bloke will have no one around him and he'll turn himself inside out just to lose the ball, give someone a hospital pass or best case scenario pass the ball backwards.

Who died? Who are the armbands for?Ando's grandmother passed away according to FB. Wearing the armbands was about the only thing the Jets did right all night.

Throw Ward in ahead of Caravella… he actually had some energy, and played some nice quick passes to keep the flow going. Caravella isn't exactly a defensive asset so it's no loss if Ward can't tackle - at least he provides something going forward.

I don't expect A-league players to perform at Serie-A or La-Liga standard. Just the intention to actually try and release the ball quicker would be enough at this stage. Caravella doesn't even look like he wants to pass until he's surrounded by the opposition.

He seems to be holding the ball trying to draw a foul - but its not working.

The only time he's ever looked like a professional playing for the Jets is when he combined with ADP for a goal by tackling Chapman.

We moved the ball quicker in All-Age M last year.

I reckon Tinks rang GVE a few weeks back.

"Here's the deal Garry. I'll get griff if you throw the heart game, I'll dump millions on it from Singapore, I'll stay rich, club survives etc etc"

Tinks to use winnings to buy out GVE's contract and get Ian crook to take over.

What chance Ian crook announced as new jets manager?
