There will be an article in the Herald either tomorrow or wednesday about the Jets and how Never Tear Us Apart has become our club anthem.
Post up in here your recollections (if you have any) of how NTUA was chosen in foz v1.0, your experiences singing it and how you think it fits as an anthem.

I seem to recall Butcher was the first to recommend it on here. Well that's what my head tells me.

Whenever I think of it beginning I think of the Never Surrender tifo.

And Con. I loved Con, he did so much for this town. He also ran a team that won shit. Then I think of Con's town-blowing-away signing plus the green grass on the other side.

Griff

All of this makes me realise how good our club was, and how shit it is now. We have Michael Bridges as assistant coach ffs.

I once sang NTUA at karaoke in Wgong and felt like I was on top of the world. I backed it up later with Teenage Dream by Katy Perry and the ladies went fxxxing wild. Weeks later I sang Teenage Dream at Wangi Pub karaoke and no one was impressed - tough crowd.

You sang that at Wangi Pub and got out of there alive? Let alone with all your teeth intact? Jeeeeeeeeeesus..

butch & baron were the originators

some gypo once claimed that it was from the players and we copied it. wrong, f°ckface - was the other way round

I'm old enough to remember throwing bottles at INXS while booing them off the stage at the 16 footers. Never tear us apart reminds me of just how crap INXS were and probably still are.

My memories was that it was decided on foz that it should become our anthem. It was lined up with a few other options but NTUA was the clear winner.

An anthem was needed that was started by supporters, not some manufactured anthem by the club. At least, this is what I told The Herald :)

I didnt remember whether the kazes started it first and then it was adopted as the anthem or the other way around. But I do remember that it was their suggestion.

there was initially some resistance against using it.

by the time of the grand final, we had the weight of numbers to carry it on.

Agree.

I sang it by myself in the stand yesterday. Some bloke looked at me and laughed. Sang even louder.

I'll be making sure it's on little baby Jeterpool's playlist to sing it to sleep when it's born along with You'll Never Walk Alone and Fields of Anfield Road.

In pockets. My mates normally sing it, but it's hit and miss. Obviously far better than it being ignored by all but the squadron, but it's not wide spread.

No story, qmon. Just replying to the question posed by furns. Apart from the song that is sung at Jets games, it means nothing to me. I have no idea WHY that song was chosen, nor what it's connection is with the club. No one has ever actually explained why it apparently means so much to everyone. If Zads Lads started singing Tubthumping one week and then a small group of the crowd joined in, I would feel I have just as much connection with that.

As I said, I told the herald that it was started by supporters via an online discussion rather than some manufactured choice that the club might have chosen. I knew it was the kaze, but there wasnt really much point going into that much detail as most dont know who they were.
It was something that has started small and steadily grown, more people are singing it but an anthem is something that takes time to spread its not something that everyone finds an instant connection with.

Regardless of who chose it, the song title says why its our anthem.

All I remember was a thread about an Anthem and suggesting anything by a local act like the Jets!!!!! Or the chair. I was politely as ever told no and NTUA came up. This was in 2007 I'm pretty sure as I was still "working" at the youthie.

Next thing I remember was belting it out at the Gosford Hotel and feeling like a brother in arms with Kaze and Squadron alike.

Last season there was much debate about a fans anthem. Internet forums were bombarded, radio talkbacks were abuzz and the throats of many fans tested the lyrics of many songs. All through the debates, one song, innocently sung for the first time, on an Away trip stood up to all others. Never Tear Us Apart, by INXS was clearly never going to go away, it was after all the one song that grew organically into our anthem - as all anthems should. Now, after much liaising with club, rumours are abound that it will be played on the PA as the teams walk out for us sing with, failing that a moment of PA

When Tinks threaten to hand back the license and we had that rally out the front of the Stadium. That was probably the loudest I've heard NTUA. Definitely think the song connects with the club as the reference to "wings" and connects with fans connection to the Club with the "Never tear us apart" part. For that reason I connect with it.

P.S CONNECT.

Also if anyone in the Squadron can play sax I think it would be a awesome touch if they do the sax solo in the song before games.

Anthems, what are they, why are they important, do we need one? The simple answers are, 1. A rousing song that stirs your heart and sends a very clear message to the team, “we are with you”, 2. They draw people together and create an atmosphere of solidarity and working for a common cause and 3. HELL YES.

Things get complicated when we start to try and decide which song we go with. Whatever we as Jets Fans choose to make OUR anthem once the decision is made, we must all fall in line and unite in one voice. That’s really the whole point, to unite as one.

There are currently a number of views floating around about the process of how we go about choosing an anthem, do we put it to a vote? do the hardcore fans decide? Do we open it up to all the valley to have their say? Or do we just wait and see what happens in the stands? 1233 radio has opened the question up to all Jets fans to put in their two cents and there is a lot to be considered.

Does it need to be unique to us? an original song? do we change the words of a popular or unpopular song? Should it be simple or simpler? To be honest I don’t really care how we come to a final decision, or what that decision is so long as the anthem is adopted by all fans an sends that clear message “we are with you”.

The most famous Football anthem, is without doubt or rival, Liverpool's “You’ll Never Walk Alone” it’s simple, tugs at your heart and makes the hairs on your neck stand on end. Is that what we are after? Or do we go down the self deprecating humour line and sing a song that takes the piss? If we can find one that does both it’s got my vote.

Currently debate is raging on the matter with an INXS song “You’ll Never Tear Us Apart” taking early favourite status, many have already started belting it out in the car park after games and on away trips. I like it, but I know others see differently. If you want to have an input, join the debate, email the Jetstream, call Aaron Kearny at 1233 ABC or log onto the highly charged forums at www.newcastlefootball.net either way when a decision is made and the team walks out, wherever you are in the ground, stand, sing and let the team know we are always with them.

Not a lot getting into it that I notice. I sing as do my kids. Probably not loud enough though.

Its been around the club for at least 4 years. My daughter has been referring to it as her favourite football song since she was 2.

Like most songs that remain special in our hearts it was a Kaze spesh. This was back when Butch and I were going to film Kaze Korner for all your Kaze needs. Downward spiral put a stop to that passion. Sometimes we like to sit on the porch that we don't have, play NTUA and look at slide shows of Griff, Denni, Picken, Corbo and Parisi.

Definitely hearing it "murmured" more around the place now. Slowly picking up momentum. Of course if the fans were excited and gee'd up for the game rather than dreading the probable result that may help!

Nice to see the timing was right against SFC, started before they walked out and finished when they were on the pitch. Pisses me off when it is all finished and the players still haven't been seen. Can't be that hard to organise.
