Lucas Neill's 2014 FIFA World Cup selection hopes received a boost with the Australia captain playing 90 minutes for Blackburn's Under-21 side in its 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur Under-21.

Neill, a free agent since his contract finished at Japanese club Omiya Ardija in November, has been training with Rovers in the hope of securing a contract.

His appearance on Tuesday (AEDT) in the reserves match, which featured another Australian, Spurs' 19 year-old midfielder Giancarlo Gallifuoco, provides a strong indication he may be given a career lifeline by Rovers manager Gary Bowyer.

Bowyer revealed he and Neill had discussed the possibility of the Socceroos captain making a return to the club where he rose to prominence during a six-year stint from 2001-2007, telling the Lancashire Telegraph in early February: "I've said all along you can never say never, and that is the same situation now.

"Lucas and myself have been very honest with each other right from the start, we both know where we stand.

"If the opportunity for Lucas to join another club comes along, then that is a possibility.

"But at the same time, we would have to sort something out if we thought something suited us."
News of Neill's return to the pitch may come as a relief for Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou, whose options in defence have taken a hit with injuries to Rhys Williams and Trent Sainsbury.

When asked if he'd be seeing Neill during his fact-finding mission abroad, Postecoglou said: "I'm not into having a lot of meetings with players. I never have been and never will be.

"The message has been consistent to all the players about my expectations so I'm not going to be having series of meetings with players.

"Where my priorities lie is to see where players are playing and hopefully playing good football then I can sit down and watch them play and assess where they're at.

"But the message is pretty clear and I don't think it will surprise anyone that I'll only be looking at players who are playing regularly and playing some good football."

Seriously how is playing for some yoof team a boost for his World Cup hopes??

Want to go to the World Cup then get a club and play some football you stupid ****.

The arrogance this bloke displays flattens me. Wants to go to a WC at his age yet can't even be bothered doing something simple like finding a club and playing games.

What sort of role model attitude is this??

The fact the bloke may make the World cup after pulling this shit is a ****ing disgrace and a classic example of all that is wrong with football in this country

Theres like 121 days until the World Cup kicks off. Take off another 20 or so days from that before Ange has to name the squad. By that it means the bloke has 100 days to get some solid football in and find a club.

Can the bloke put his ego aside to drop his wage demands to get the football he should be getting to prepare himself for Brazil??

I reckon not.

If he ain't got a club by the end of this month he won't be getting one IMHO

BLACKBURN Rovers will not be re-signing Lucas Neill after boss Gary Bowyer revealed the Australian had left the club.

Neill had training with Rovers as he attempted to regain his place in the Australia squad ahead of the World Cup in Brazil this summer.

The 35-year-old played 90 minutes for Rovers’ U21 side in a 2-2 draw with Tottenham earlier this month and Bowyer hadn’t ruled out a return for the defender who spent six years at Blackburn between 2001 and 2007.

But the Rovers boss will not be taking up the option of signing Neill, although he remains on the lookout for defensive cover.

“Lucas Neill was training with us and he played in a reserve game and now he is not training with us,” said Bowyer.

“If there was something could have come of it we might have done something but at the same time we were aware of the fact that if someone else comes in for him or if wants to try something else to get in the World Cup squad then that would be his goal.

“We were helping Lucas out with training but the World Cup is his goal and he has got an opportunity to play in that and everyone would want to play in that.

“Different people are interested in him and that is where he is at the moment.”

Neill has not played a competitive game since leaving Japanese club Omiya Ardija in November and Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou is not expected to select him in Australia’s squad for a friendly with Ecuador next month.

Bowyer is still attempting to strengthen his squad and admits central defence is the one area he is looking at.

Rovers have only Matt Kilgallon and Grant Hanley as specialist centre backs following the January sale of Scott Dann to Crystal Palace.

But Bowyer admitted it was at tough task to bring someone in when they will not be guaranteed first team football.

He added: “You try trying to bring in a centre half in to sit on our bench. We have got to be wary of that.

“Why is somebody going to leave a club where he is playing n their reserves to come and sit on your bench? It is a difficult one but it is something that everyone has to deal with.

“We have not got mass cover there but we have got people like Jason Lowe and Tommy Spurr that can fill in there short term.”

Clubless Lucas Neill has been overlooked by Australia coach Ange Postecoglou for next month’s clash with Ecuador in London, according to sources.

This would leave the erstwhile skipper’s 2014 FIFA World Cup hopes in grave doubt.

With the Socceroos to play their tournament opener in Brazil against Chile on 13 June, the 35-year-old defender has less than four months to find a new club and re-ignite his stagnant career.

Postecoglou, who names his 23-man squad for the 6 March duel at Millwall's home ground The Den on Wednesday, has made it plain he will only select players for the match against fellow World Cup participant Ecuador who are playing regularly for their clubs and that reputations count for nothing in his new order.

His stance leaves Neill - whose recent training stint with Blackburn Rovers failed to convince coach Gary Bowyer he was worthy of a contact offer - on the outside looking in as Postecoglou gets set to assess the merits of a new breed at the back.

Neill, who turns 36 on 9 March, played a single game for Rovers’ under-21s with Bowyer saying: ''If there was something that could have come of it, we might have done something.

"'But at the same time, we were aware of the fact that if someone else comes in for him or if he wants to try something else to get in the World Cup squad, then that would be his goal.

''Different people are interested in him and that is where he is at the moment.''

Unless Neill finds a new home soon it appears the 96th cap won for his country last November in the 1-0 win over Costa Rica will be his last as Postecoglou puts pragmatism over sentiment.

The two-time World Cup player has been without a club since parting ways with J.League outfit Omiya Ardija in November and may now be usurped by a new wave, with the likes of Eredivsie recruit Trent Sainsbury (unavailable through injury for the Ecuador game), Preston’s Bailey Wright, China-based Ryan McGowan, Western Sydney’s Matthew Spiranovic, Curtis Good and Alex Wilkinson all pushing hard for Brazil.

Neill’s presence in the squad has been a source of heated debate since South Africa 2010, with many calling for a change of the guard back then but despite the conjecture he has often reserved some of his most commanding displays for his country.

But Neill, who has captained Australia for seven years, has played just 15 club games in the past 12 months during spells with Al-Wasl, Sydney FC and Omiya.

He has made a further eight appearances for his country in that time having been cut loose by his past five clubs – Omiya, Sydney FC, Al-Wasl, Al-Jazira and Galatasaray.

I am more interested in success in this not so much for any point scoring with WLG. More so as I feel our mentality as a football nation needs to actually change.

I find it ridiculous that we have continued to carry the blokes of 2006 for so long. I also find it baffling that people say the new blokes ain't good enough, they may not be as good as our 2006 side but they need the chances the chances we haven't given them.

I have no problem with Lucas wanting to play in the World Cup. After all who wouldn't want to go??

I just have a massive problem that the bloke has a level of arrogance where he thinks he can get there when he can't find a stable club side for the best part of a couple of years. I also find it baffling as to how/why it has taken him so long to get a club. Surely if Brasil was his main target he could have got a HAL side in January. He has done very little to warrant selection in recent years and his sense of entitlement he feels to the Socceroos position sickens me.

Interesting to note their is another bloke of Lucas's generation flying under the radar for WC selection. Generally this bloke is also quite good at talking it up. At least this bloke has stayed quiet on the subject and knuckled down found himself a club and is starting to build a case that Ange will actually have to seriously consider him on form not reputation. Considering this bloke has made a name for himself for being a bit self centred prat in the past I have to take the hat off to him for going about it quietly without any fanfare. By this bloke I am referring to Harry Kewell

Going over there to watch them all I want to see is eleven blokes on the park giving a 110% for the cause. I don't give two ****s really who gets selected just that I want to see 11 blokes dying for the cause to make me think the shitloads I am forking out to see them was warranted. I don't buy into this shit that we are certainties to get thumped every game and I think the rest of us in this country need to actually wake up and see that we can be a threat and not disgrace ourselves.

Sure we are gonna have to play well and do the little things right and we are definitely up against but I like the fact that we are underdogs as it will fit the Aussie ethos perfectly to dig in and have a go and drag the contest down to a scrap

Luca$ trying to apply the old it's better to be only training with an English side than to be training and playing on a regular basis in the A-league trick made famous by Pim Veerbeek.

Slightly off topic but I wonder if Oganovski's SFC contract included a guaranteed spot in the Socceroos for Brazil 2014 ? It would certainly solve any salary cap issues.

On a positive note Lucas Neill had a really good game tonight, definitely finding his feet now! #drfc

Been a critic of him of late but Dean Furman was excellent today, as was Lucas Neill and David Cotterill. Shame about the rest. #drfc

Lucas Neill is absolute class too! #drfc

Don't see how Husband deserved motm, Johnstone, Neill or maybe Cotts should've got it #drfc

either Neill or Johnstone should've been man of match #drfc

However...

If Lucas HAS really been killing it at Doncaster, why wouldn't you take him?

Though it does make me wonder how a) rubbish Doncaster are or b) how much he actually gave a shit when he was at the smurfs.

Also, considering he has been playing right back (apparently), that gives us some experienced versatility as well.

Blokes played 2 and a bit games. Hardly solid enough grounding to say his form is killing it.

If that bloke was serious about playing in the World Cup he would have found himself a club to give him regular football. The fact it took him as long as it did is a disgrace coz if you were that desperate for game time coz Brazil was what you wanted anyone with half a brain would play on a deal well below their worth just to get the games in to warrant selection.

The bloke is taking the piss if he thinks he can make a WC side and play 6 -8 games in a season to justify selection.

Opportunity should be given to those who warrant it and he don't

Anyway reality is Luca$h will make **** all difference in Brazil anyway.

Good isn't playing currently, is injured or not getting selected for Dundee.

Spira I agree with, love the man to death.

Milligan is self-confessed to not being a CB, and by no means could he do anything close to a job there at the WC.

Og has only played 6 games for Sydney, some good some bad. Worth more than Lucas performing at Doncaster?

Bailey Wright will need to get parole before anything else. Srs though I think he's playing for PNE but is that kind of young liability worth taking over?

Didn't Wilko have a stinker last game for the Roos?

Topor, really?

I've quite rated Kisnorbo & Smith in the HAL though, but I don't think the standard is as good as many believe.

McGowan maybe. More of a RB though?

Aleksander Jovanovic maybe, apparently going well in the K-League.

There's no senior defenders in your list (apart from Og). We need at least one older head, even just to keep the younger guys in line in camp and show them the ropes.

Prepare your avatar, MFKFC

BTW apparently Neill's substitution was purely precautionary, and he should be fine. He has 3 games left in his loan deal (which by my calcs will very roughly put him at the same amount of games played in the last 2 months as the Og). Apparently his killer game the other day was at RB, too.

MFKS

Actually WLG Bailey Wright played at the weekend for PNE after his run in with the cops. Being that Preston are in the playoffs already he will be playing until mid May anyway. If Preston make the play off final he will be basically playing all May. Bloke has been playing in a solid defence all season with him being a big part of it. Normally with the amount of points Preston have you would be competing for Auto Promotion at this time of year but there is a bit of an anomaly in that division this year with 5 sides head and shoulders above the rest and in the mid 70points or more with 6 games to go.

You can slag Division One off all you like but I will point out Luke Wilkshire as an example. Bloke spent the year in the same division before Germany 06 and Guus pulled him from there and put him in the team and the bloke has been a cornerstone of our team ever since. Not to mention most of the HAL players wouldn't cut it in that League anyway over the full season

It is the time for Opportunity so we should give people the opportunity to seize it

Doncaster will send Neill in for scans on Wednesday to determine the extent of the injury, although it’s understood the strain was only slight and his substitution was mainly precautionary.

Neill has played three times for Rovers, impressing at centre back in the weekend’s 3-1 loss to Birmingham City.
The veteran reverted to right back on Tuesday night, with the return from injury of regular centre half Abdoulaye Meite.

Lucas Neill has suffered a minor setback in his bid to make a third straight World Cup after limping off in Doncaster’s 2-1 home loss to Bolton Wanderers on Tuesday night (U.K time).

The 36 year old, who according to local reports was said to be in excellent form once again in his third game for his new club, felt a twinge in his hamstring in the 65th minute and came off out of precaution.

Will injury jeopardise Neill’s chances?

Lucas Neill was taken off with an injury against Bolton. Source: AAP

He’s set for a scan on Wednesday and is now in doubt for Saturday’s trip to Ipswich but the club is confident he’ll be able to return for the Easter weekend fixtures against Derby County on Good Friday and his old club Millwall on Easter Monday.

With only five games left in the Championship season, Neill will be hoping that’s the case as he tries to win a spot on the plane to Brazil.

Neill (Doncaster) - Out
Shane Lowry (Milwall) - Out
Bailey Wright (PNE) - unused substitute
Aaron Downes (Torquay) - subbed on in last few minutes
Trent Sainsbury (PEC Zwolle) - Out
Alex Wilkinson (Jeonbuk) - 1-0 win, full 90 minutes
Luke Devere (Gyeongnam) - unused sub
Robbie Cornthwaite (Joennam) - subbed on in 83rd minute
Ryan McGowan (Shandong Luneng - still think he's a RB though) - 2-0 win, full 90mins
And at home I think (didn't watch) Og & Spira (the only real 2 centrebacks I consider WC worthy in the HAL) both played full 90s for their HAL teams, with Og seemingly only having 1 game left before he hits offseason.

Weird to think that our centre-backs are rated so poorly on the international scene these days.

I thought CBs always had the reputation of being physical beasts (tall, strong), which pretty much goes hand-in-hand with the stereotype for Australian footballers. Why is it that our defenders seem to be less valued than our midfielders and strikers?

Points I could think of:

- The stereotypical defenders are not really being picked here in the A-League either. Chapman, DeVere, Sainsbury, Milligan (former), Galloway, all pretty physically average blokes and definitely in the majority compared to the bigger units.
- New national style has emphasised the need for technical CBs as opposed to physical ones. This has made us 'soft'. tbh I hate this line of reasoning (goes for other positions on the pitch), but I guess it could be partly true.
- Other countries can now produce CBs who are just as big, but probably better on the ball.

Any thoughts?

MFKS
19-04-2014, 11:47 AM
I think this mainly goes back to the issues the whole country faces with the dismantling of the NSL the start up of the HAL. The lack of Yoof league for a few years and the fact the clubs haven't been developing players for national league competition.

This is slowly being rectified ie emerging jets etc but the damage has been done and as a result we still haven't replaced the 2006 generation as the new guys haven't reached that level yet.

Good news is we are starting to send more and more out of the League and in a few years time I think we will be catching up to where we were 15 years ago

militiamon
19-04-2014, 12:25 PM
Good point MFKS, I didn't consider that.

Still doesn't quite explain why we have seemingly produced quality attacking players (Oar, Kruse, Leckie, Vidosic) and even decent midfielders (Rogic, Holland, Bozanic, Milligan) but very few defenders who have really made it since 2006 (Rhys Williams? Lowry? who have barely featured for the Socceroos or not at all).

Could be part of what you're saying MFKS and the fact that we don't have many defenders is just a random result of that, but it seems completely odd that we don't have a single defender playing at any half-decent standard right now.

MFKS
19-04-2014, 09:35 PM
Other thing also may be that clubs are also more likely to sign foreign attacking players rather than defenders. Think you will find in most Leagues the amount of foreigners are heavily weighted in the Attacker/ midfield roles. Generally speaking you can find better value there to make a difference.

I would be filthy if we wasted our Foreigner quota at the Jets on central defenders and fullbacks rather than No 10's and strikers.

Maybe this is the case elsewhere where the opportunities ain't there as often for defenders to go to Europe as for an attacking player

I reackon Barca turned the tables by not giving a toss who their CBs are, they played the semis of the Champs League with Mascherano and Song back there.
Even Pique was considered rubbish by Man U and he's like the best in the world and stuff.
I think we think that CB's need to be a certain type of player (well 'ard and all that) but once they get to a decent level they get found out through lack of technical skill/awareness etc.
When Barca eventually field a team of 11 centre mids everyone might wake up to the simple fact of picking your best 11 and letting them go.

FFS Ange should just pick Griff back there for Brazil, I reackon he'd go alright.

As what I think is an inverse to your argument militia - I still can't fathom why Newcastle United bought Curtis Good originally. He wasn't necessarily a standout in the HAL, and was more of a physical than technical player IMO. Don't England have a production line of centrebacks in the same mould as Good? It made zero sense to me why they went & bought someone who from what I'm led to believe there are 50 of in their home country.

Update for you, MFKFC.

Firstly, Curtis Good is in a club v country worry:

GOOD is in with a chance of making the Australia squad for this summer's World Cup but the Aussies' preparations begin at a training camp on May 19 - a day before the cup final.

Also this week:
Neill (Doncaster) - Out
Shane Lowry (Milwall) - Out
Bailey Wright (PNE - Football League 1) - Played two games, both 90mins. First was a 1-0 loss, second was a 5-2 win in which he scored a volley
Rhys Williams (Middlesborough) - Out
Chris Herd (Aston Villa) - Out
Trent Sainsbury (PEC Zwolle) - Out
Ryan McGowan (Shandong Luneng - still think he's a RB though) - Out
Dylan McGowan (Hearts) - 90mins. 2-0 win.
Spira (WSW) - continues his finals run
Og (SFC) - played last game

MFKS

How is the situation with Curtis Good a worry??

Either FFA will be entitled to him for a NT call up or they won't be entitled.

If they are entitled then it will come down to whether Ange is prepared to let him play for Dundee Utd in the Cup Final at the expense of the WC preps or not.

If he is allowed to play barring injury playing in a big game that he is in a side who could win surely this experience plus benefit of competitive game time wouldn't really be a big concern to Postecoglou??

Either way whatever happen with his situation will not be an issue.

On another note simple question for you WLG disregarding any desire to win the bet we have and what not.

How do you feel about Luca$h and the lack of game time inability to find clubs etc and how this would damage the NT and football in this country if he was selected for the WC??

Do you also feel he deserves to go or not to a prestigious event like a WC with what he has achieved in the last 12 months as a professional footballer???

pv4
23-04-2014, 10:46 AM
I don't necessarily think Lucas deserves to be there in the context of minutes played in a season or two, no.

But in the context of being Socceroos captain for so long, being at so many World Cups and general Socceroos camps, etc that Lucas HAS to be there. He's too valuable an asset not to have around. The Socceroos have kept Archie Thompson in the squad for years now not due to his form at national league level, but due to how important he was to training camps as he was so fun and happy to be around.

Getting the squad setup for the Asian Cup and 2018 WC is great, and I agree we should focus around our youth to make this happen. But letting a bunch of "kids" run around in Brail for four weeks is not the best thing for them IMO. They need older heads there to just watch over them, teach them, get them used to being in such camps, etc.

Lucas was one of, if not our best player in that run of 3 qualifiers in a month that saw us qualify for the WC. He's not past it at all.

And TBH out of all our CB options, only one stands out as a must-start to me - Spira. I don't rate Curtis Good - I've always rated Connor Chapman higher at every tournament I've seen them together. Bailey Wright is playing a league underneath Neill's current one, and has issues personally. That list I'm attempting to update on playing times - barely anyone is actually playing (and especially - no one is playing at a decent level)! There really doesn't seem to be any great candidates to claim Neill's spot in my eyes.

It does and always has made sense that Neill should be on the plane to Brazil. Maybe not as a starting CB, but as an experienced 3rd-to-4th choice that guides the young guys at camps and handles the media pressure well - absolutely.

http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/neill-omitted-from-socceroo-world-cup-squad/90345

Socceroo coach Ange Postecoglou has announced that long-serving national team skipper Lucas Neill won’t be selected in Australia’s provisional 30-man squad for June’s FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The defender, capped 96 times, was overlooked for the Socceroos' last friendly against Ecuador in March after being left without a club since departing J-League club Omiya Ardija in November 2013.

Neill secured a month loan deal with English Championship side Doncaster in late March but Postecoglou felt the 36-year-old would not be ready for a World Cup campaign.

“In the end I just had to make a decision not so much about the recent history but the last six months in terms of form and fitness,” he said of Neill, who made his international debut as an 18-year-old.

“There just wasn’t enough evidence there for me to say he’d be able to hold up in a World Cup.

“It was both a combination of the lack of regular football and the little niggles he got that made the decision for me.

Postecoglou felt it was important to inform Neill personally of the decision prior to the World Cup squad being announced given what he's achieved at international and club level.

Neill broke the Socceroo record when he pulled on the captain’s armband for the 61st time in his last international against Costa Rica.

“I had a conversation with Lucas regarding the World Cup squad and obviously before I announced the 30-man squad next week I thought it was important for me to speak to him directly,” said Postecoglou.

“I informed him that he hasn’t made the 30, from my perspective paying due respect to the fact that he’s been the captain for six years and the captain of the World Cup campaign so far.

“It was difficult, he’s worked damn hard to get himself ready and available; he’s shown an enormous determination to go to this World Cup.

“You can see why he’s played for his country as many times as he has and why he was a leader, he’s gone down fighting.”

Postecoglou indicated that his decision was purely based on the World Cup.

“My discussions with him were purely about the World Cup and he has every intention of continuing to play on and play next year, probably in Europe,” he said.

Just a FYI, I have narrowed my selection of avatars for you MFKFC to three options. When that final squad is announced & Neill is in it, I'll be ready..

You do that:roflz: :violin:

Regardless of what Ange has said and regardless of what bet we have I will actually be filthy if you get to pick my Avatar.

Only reason being is it will be a dark day for Aussie football if we choose to take a 35 year old to a World Cup who has played under 4 games in 8 months. Basically saying we are ****ed long term if we can't replace him adequately with our talent development programs and we are that short sighted we can't see the big picture.

Aussie football has done some pretty dumb things over the years. Taking this bloke would be right up there in the top 5

Rightio

When is this bloke gonna come out and do the honourable thing and apoligise to the young players from this country.

About 15 months ago when the **** was still dragging the NT through the mud with his desperate hanging on he proceeded to come out and bag the younger players out there for not doing enough to step up and fulfil the requirements to be a corner stone of our NT.

In light of Ange sending this bloke into retirement and actually giving the Yoof a ****ing go all I have seen is one massive upward spiral from our NT.

The same ****s who Luca$h were bagging have stepped up and delivered us a respectable fighting performance at the WC with an inexperienced side against world class quality opponents and have since delivered us a confederation title the same thing that Luca$h and his mates from 2006 were unable to deliver.

I feel this bloke owes all and sundry an unreserved apology. Who knows what could have been achieved if we had a decent manager in 2011 who actually ****ed Luca$h and co off then and actually blooded blokes for a WC campaign like they should have just as Ange will do with sending Timmy and Bresc Out before 2018.

All I remember from your last couple of games for the Socceroos Luca$h were you getting beat 6-0 6-0 like it was a tennis match and then giving Socceroos supporters the bird
