Vrteski in as cover for injured goalkeepers Thursday, 22 November 2012 2:59 PM
The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets have signed former Perth Glory goalkeeper Aleks Vrteski as cover for the Club’s injured shot-stoppers.
Vrteski made 13 appearances for the Glory during two separate stints at the Club in the 2006/07 and 2009/10 seasons.
The 24-year-old former Young Socceroo arrived in Newcastle on Wednesday after playing 18 matches with Persija Jakarta in the Indonesian Premier League last season.
With Ben Kennedy already missing with a knee injury, Vrteski was given the opportunity to link up with the Jets as injury cover after Mark Birighitti fractured his cheekbone during last Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Wellington.
Vrteski said he would be looking to put his best foot forward during his time with the Jets.
“It’s really unfortunate what has happened to Mark, especially considering how well he was playing,” Vrteski said.
“He’s a Perth boy as well and a good friend of mine and you never like to see that sort of injury.
“I’ve got a good opportunity now and I just need to train well and do the best I can to help the team. If I get a chance to play I’m confident I can do a good job.”
Scott Neville and Josh Mitchell were teammates of Vrteski while he was at the Glory and he said knowing them had made it easier to settle in.
“Scott has been great since I first made contact with the Jets and he’s offered to let me stay at his place,” Vrteski said.
“It definitely helps having familiar faces like Scott and Josh here to help you settle in.
“It’s a good environment here and even though the last result was not what they wanted, I can see the way they've trained today and I know they’ll be keen to bounce back.”

is he still fat?
Whens Kanta due back from his injury??
Should be getting close to returning by now shouldn't he??
Almost be relieved to see Kanta back in the side if it forces the Egg to dump James Brown ( Never thought I would ever say that)
Would love it if the Jets could get Harry Kewell on a 12 week guest stint and a 1 year contract for the following year.
He could probably do a decent job in the no 10 role that we seem to be missing and would more than make up for my disappointment over Griff.
Make it happen Tinks.
we need fat ronaldo.
It's a circus already.
This Corey Brown looks dead set 12. Is he signing for Firsts, Youth or Emerging program? :gent:
Brillante and brown are that ****in shit it really grinds my gears.
Yeh agree, Brillante is quite good without being spectacular.
has corey brown actually signed?
if so he will be great for us
had huge wraps on him in u17 world cup
I've been thinking for a couple of weeks now that it does not make sense that James Brown and Heskey play in the same team. They perform a very similar function and it doesn't make sense to have two people on the field doing essentially the same job (although in somewhat different styles).
I could understand a Brown/Smeltz combination or a Heskey/Joel combination but not a Brown/Heskey combination.
Browns a waste of space at present. Don't quite see how Heskey is that bad ??
Well that is the formation the Egg has us playing. Heskey ain't gonna get a strike partner up front come what may.
The Egg sticks to his pattern on this pretty solidly. Playing 2 up front in a standard strikeforce of yesteryear just will not happen.
Better get used to it and work out who we can get to do Browns job a bit better than he does
Agree with this.
Playing the way we do I feel we do need a bloke to play up front to run in behind and stretch defences by playing on the last man's shoulder. Unfortunately Heskey don't play this way. Once the in behind threat came Brown Chilli Goody etc would offer more of a threat with the opponent having to worry about more about dropping in to cover the forward runs from us.
Bloke in my Avatar would have been perfect for this
Maybe we could have a front four of:
Virgilli.......Heskey......Goodwin
...............RyGriff
Playing Heskey behind Griff will be an unexpected ploy, and would allow Heskey to roam, while keeping a Striker at the point.
Won't happen though, can dream.
Not exactly the worst idea. Heskey has shown himself quite adapt at coming short controlling ball laying off to teammate. Also play him here he would be quite hard to mark. Assuming he had the fitness to make some late runs in the box would open up a world of possibilities particularly if GVE paired him with Taggz. Taggz would offer the in behind the line threat and Heskey would have a pile of room to play in
Put it in the news thread but also kinda belongs here, Marcelo Fiorentini talking on his fb about a possible return soon.
can anyone believe that ruben zadkovich is our captain now?
No
Pretty sure u can forget about song coming back, he's debuted for South Korea recently and can't see playing in the a-league as a good platform for more national team appearances.
Would love gve to somehow unearth another gem from Asia tho
