Goodwin signs on for 2 more years.
giving 2 year contracts out to young players is a real risky one for me
yes it secures the club if a cashed up club comes in and pays a decent transfer for the player but
they can get complacent in there boots, goodwin after those first 5 games last season just switched off and didn't play well for the rest of the season, middle half of this season last year of contract pulls his finger out and starts playing outstandingly well.
personally would have given him another year than if kept his form than gave him a contract extension.
you mean the 5 or 6 games last season where he was close to best on ground for us... and was then inexplicably left out of a trip to Wellington, given time in the youth then came back a shattered shell of himself after GVE blasted nameless players for not playing to his tactic and then said something about nameless players having too much width, clearly a jibe at Goodwin who was playing as a WINGER and crossing for Heskey, instead of the BS narrow cutting in tactic that GVE had us trying to use?
Yeah, I'd probably turn into a shit player if everything I was good at and doing well was lambasted by my manager who constantly gave me shit for playing the game as best fit my attributes.
**** me, if a player can't handle being dropped then they aren't cut out for being a professional footballer.
Also, sounds about right, person plays well for a few game and gets a new contract. It is good news though if he continues to perform.
Being dropped wasn't the issue. Being dropped when playing well and then (namelessly) singled out as GVE's scapegoat... that's the problem.
Couldn't agree more with you. Goodwin wasn't the only player to be stripped of confidence and dignity by GVE. It was a common theme of his managerial style, and we wonder why the team was shite. Players will take a while to get the confidence back. I'm happy to see Goodwin signed up again.
I think Grimario has nailed it. If we all knew the truth of what GVE did to him I think we would understand the situation better. It didn't make sense that when he was playing well he got dropped and singled out as a scapegoat. I guess we will never know. But since GvE has gone Goodwin it getting back to the classy player that we want to see.
all i think about is
marko jesic, sean rooney, etc.
blokes have been given 2 year extensions after a couple of good games and have had the same level of potential as goodwin and they are playing either in lower asian competitions like india/malaysia or playing in the NPL.
i just think it would have been safe to give him a year deal to prove himself.
BodyNovo, you give him a year to prove himself and he leaves for another club on a free.
Part and parcel of the league, while some people wouldn't want to take the risk, I would
In saying that don't clubs have to wait until 3 months (I think it is this amount) before there contract ends to approach a player
The club surely by than would have made there mind up as to whether he is worthy of a contract extension.
BodyNovo it's not so much of whether he is worthy but of whether the player wants to stay.
This is the club attempting to protect their investment. Youth is an investment and if it pays off you -
A) Have a quality player
B) Have a quality commodity other clubs will have to pay for if he wants to leave
If we signed him for 1 year and he had a stand-out season next year then bigger clubs may come knocking, in that case he can refuse a new contract with us and walk on a free. This means the jets are missing out on a potential pay day.
It's part and parcel of the whole game and is no different for a big club as it is for the Jets, it's just the Jets have a little less cash to splash around and thus need to be even smarter with their investments.
Edit: Although Goodwin has had time to prove his worth it was under the tutelage of one Gary van Egmond. Whether you think that may have affected his development or not is a personal opinion. He's definitely got technical and physical ability, his attitude and mental strength is what might let him down.
so long as hes not on massive coin like jesic was reoprted tio be on this move is a good one.
Jaliens is signing a 2 year contract with us to see his career out
