No getting around the fact that signing Joey Gibbs is already proving to be an awful decision, sheesh.
He was an awful signing from the beginning. Look at who else we can use in his position/s:
Heskey
Bridges
Goodwin
Hoole
Virgilli
Taggart
Brown
Cooper
Kale
That's 9 players we already have, plus Burns if we eventually sign him. Now, does Gibbs offer anything more than any if those players could? We should be looking at improving the squad, not getting players of the same skiłł season after season (the Tarek Elrich effect).
Anything less than a top class playmaker and centreback and we're ****ed and all three of them need to go:
Middleby - for signing GvE and general incompetence since he took over
van Egmond - for being shit and continually signing incompetent players plus his inability to sign top players
Deans - for being Deans
This is me thinking out loud here, but have a look at GvE's thought process for signing Alex Smith.
We have as midfielders:
- Kanta
- Zad
- Caravella
- Brown
- Brillante
- Cooper
- Pepper
- Oxborrow
Out of them you could say the attacking midfielders would be:
- Brown
- Caravella (if GvE wants him there)
- Cooper
- Bridges (including him for AM position)
Out of all those guys, the ones you would think don't have claim to a starting spot just yet would be:
- Oxborrow
- Cooper
- Pepper
- Bridges (IMO)
The rest have a decent stab at a starting spot.
So then you look at Alex Smith's qualities
- Made state league look easy
- Scores occasional goals
- Hard working midfielder
- Probably prefers #10, but would be better used in HAL as a box-to-box
Almost all of these qualities I believe Caravella has. I think we have Alex Smith already in our squad.
If GvE truly believed we needed another midfielder, why wouldn't he look at a cheap local who can score occasional goals, work hard, play for the shirt, and fit in with the playing group? I don't know - someone like Jobe?
We have a bunch of cheap kids on our books. I daresay, ignoring Heskey's wages, we'd be scraping close to the minimum cap spend as-is. Our remaining two squad spots were meant to be for a playmaker and a centre back, both meant to be high profile and "bring an x-factor" to the team. They were meant to be the icing on the cake - they were meant to take us from a scraping finals team to a top 2 team (I'm serious - GvE has had so long and so much support with his system that he shouldn't be considered successful with anything less). What exactly is GvE and HSG hoping to achieve by signing Smith? Do they expect to send out a Jets Insider email saying "we signed an A-League journeyman, if you haven't signed up to #standwithus yet then there's no way you can't now"? They'd get more returning members if they signed Jobe up again ffs.
And because I love the topic - Bridges needs to rip up his contract and let us sign a centre back, playmaker AND Burns.
In summation, tl;dr #bringbackgriffo #bridgesout
Who is the Alex smith rumour coming from? Caravella is not ur typical am, doesn't pose a goal scoring threat but I like what he brings for the deeper mid role. My only thinking with smith is that we may have more spots left than we thought or someone is leaving
ozsportsinsider on twitter.
Last season in various reports and interviews we were told that Chapman, Ox, Cooper, Duncan, Hoole & Brillante were all on the FT youth contracts, where I think the rules on allow 3 or 4 (I think 3). So I'm not sure even if HSG know which players contribute to our cap and squad spaces tbh. But I know that RM confirmed we only had 2 squad spots available currently - he's told us that several times. Bridges needs to free us up another spot.
Yeah remember RM saying we only had 2 spots. I do agree about bridges but seriously not gonna happen till next season. I think we will hear of someone leaving soon, maybe one of the under 20's might have impressed enough at the world cup
We will need more cover at left back then. I wouldn't be surprised if heskey doesn't return either
Burns is official on a season loan

What i think our starting XI should be now

There is only one Middleby, just like Kerry Packer could only find one Alan Bond to fleece.
Oh Middleby. You've done it again.
Tell you what, the Jets have really capitalized on 'Burnsmania' already.
Got a text message 30 mins after announcing we've signed a bloke on loan for 1/2 season to remind me to renew my seats.
Talk about striking while the iron is hot.
I'd best get my shit together.
Dutchy is talking 343 this year so you need to rethink your team. That's an understatement.
Really? I know he's said in the media that he wants to explore the option of a back 3 (with 2 wing-backs I assume), but we did the same thing last pre-season and look how that turned out.
Pfft. Square peg round hole.
Biraz
Chapman - Regan - Gallaway
Rubez-----------------------Brillante
Caravan - Brown
Taggart - Heskey - The Unit
That will probably translate to Calamity Mitchell at the back with Gallaway on the left and Hoole on the right with no Caravan or Brown in the team.
Yeah, let's take one of our histories leakiest defences, and take one bloke out of it. kutgw gary
It was in The Herald that Pepper will play Right wing back
I think you will find boys the 3-4-3 is Garys gibberish for a 3-6-1 formation of sorts or a 5-2-2-1 or whatever crap.
The 3 at the back they have been doing pretty religiously in the NBN of late. The 3 at the back are central though so more 2 stoppers and 1 sweeper(spare man). The full backs are also dropping back. Not that you can tell from their results cause individually defensively most of the NBN team are piss poor hence why they have not had a clean sheet all season.
1 positive with this set up is it means we have 3 back centrally when we have the ball and the full backs are pushing up. So instead of having 2 back there when we lose the ball to stop the counter we NOW have 3. Not ideal and still pigheaded as it isn't fixing the main issues but at least a positive adjustment being put in place for the Achilles heel of last season with the umpteen goals we squandered when coughing up the ball in our own half and seven shades of shit rained down on Birraz
Imagine how good a squad they could put together if they put as much into signing players as they do into shitty emails and text messages about becoming a member before the deadline even though i renewed weeks ago!
But every email they send out to the 15000 emails addresses counts as 15000 contacts in their community engagement plan.
Or maybe that's all automated so really doesn't take much effort at all and is completely unrelated to the lack of signings?
I'm on a rampage against football at the moment.
National team manager not giving 2 shits about football in this country, being an Arsenal fan and the continual negativity surrounding the club even though we've got it bloody good, constant negativity with Jets etc. FFS we had Heskey kicking about at EAS lol, even if the manager has no idea how to utilise him correctly. The "you are Heskey's bitch" entertainment factor was worth it alone.
Terrorgraph reporting that Milwall (where Scott McDonald just signed, I think) are chasing Zadkid.
Take him. Too old.
I'd be disappointed to lose Zad.
Should this happen it would open up the opportunity to pursue Matt McKay.
Hindsight is great and all, but if Zads leaves it makes the whole idea of forcing Jobe out even shitter. This coming from one of Zads biggest fans.
Something tells me GVE isn't exactly the right kind of person to kiss & makeup with Jobe, either.
Wouldn't care if he left, would be good move for him but he wouldn't get replaced well enough
Suffered many injuries in his years in the uk which he seems to be over. Superior league, unfinished business overseas, prove some doubters wrong, more money, only negative would be, how much game time he might or might not get
don't leave.
one of the many few who actually play for the shirt.
hopefully zads lads can become bridges bobbleheads or gibbs gronks next :)
Honestly Zads is pretty ordinary.
Suits championship play, run run run like a headless chook.
Agree with his love for the shirt though.
So long as we have a player ready to fill the hole.
I've always thought he was a red card waiting to happen.
Love his work rate and effort though.
We need a clever attacking midfield to replace him should he go.
