if he's to be believed he got interest from other clubs and he honestly would've been better taking the risk with his career and giving one of them a go. considerin if he crashed and burned somehwere else we'd probably take him back in a heartbeat i see no reason for him not to give it a run and actually free us up the spot to sign someone a bit better
his biggest asset is versatility but cowburn offers the same thing, you could argue who's better or worse but if ya got one we don't need two
Cowburn is nowhere near the class of Kanta. Never will be. As for versatility it doesn't matter - Cowburn is simply not of the standard we require - at any position. I'm not saying he's not good or doesn't put in the effort - just that he's not proven himself yet and had plenty of time to do so. He'll make a great state league player in the near future. We can do much better - and Kanta with subsidies / concessions is a better choice.
That's not me arguing who's better out of Kanta or cowburn, it's more me saying that we already have Cowbie signed and he offers the versatility of Kanta, plus I wanna see Kanta move on for his own good as well to see if he can grow outside of this club who haven't done much for him the past bunch of years

Let's get speculation going so the herald has some material.
He will get paid though
His club are notorious for late payment
If they don't pay they will get relegated etc
So Kruse will get his cash just a little late
That being said he needs a new club
Now assuming we qualify for Russia he missed out last time through injury
Whereabouts he go will be dictated by where he can play and impress Ange
Being that Bert coached him before we are not as far out of the picture as one may think
A close sauce of I spotted James Holland at the Junction today
Alistair Quinn ? What happened to him ? Went to Holland played for a few years as a junior then in 2nd tier of senior football in Holland - then came back to Brisbane to play in the domestic league.
He's only 24 or so and can play as either a left or right back. Unless he's injured he'd be well worth a trial with the club.
What Plague? You think he is challenged here? Really?
I don't know, you're the one with the knowledge on all things Kanta apparently.
im just wondering how you know this. If hes a mate and has confided in you then great, or if you are in the profession of analysing people from afar on their mental state then thats also cool.
otherwise i think you're observations of him are biased and uninformed.
thats why i asked for clarity.
Who needs a challenge ? It's a job and the idea is to make as much as you need for the least possible effort. So I think Kanta is doing well enough.
Mariners targetting Baro
We are definitely NOT good in the DM space. We have Ugar and a bunch of guys who are not A League standard. Look at every championship team in recent years and they have had absolute quality in the 2 DM roles. O'Neill and Brilliante (and Dimitrejevic), Milligan and Valeri are just 2 recent examples. It is the engine room of every top team
In saying that I don't think Wilkshire is the answer to that problem
In the Attackers in that List Duke, Yeboah and Kruse are definitely players I would like to see in Newcastle
In the Midfielders Holland, Ryan Williams, Chris Herd (although after him backing out on Perth I think there are other issues there)
And out of those defenders only James Meredith is one I would rate highly but we do not really need another left back
We are so not signing anyone decent, bar a marquee
Mark my words, we will end up with a marquee, a stack of older unwanted a-league players.....but will have the best 2nd keeper in the league.
I was thinking of Euopean based Aussies that may be available for loan. Chris Ikonomidis just spent half a season in Denmark. I reckon the Jets could do a lot worse than trying to get a season long loan for him.
Complete speculation but i reckon we resigned Kanta because Merrick knows we won't be able to sign players better this year. Now don't take that as a compliment to Kanta but a sign that Merrick is a realist and knows that although there are better players available we don't have the ability to sign them up for our club other than paying them way more than they are worth. Which is the problem when you win more spoons than games.
I reckon we will have a small and slightly improved squad next season but aren't going to be beating clubs like Adelaide, Perth and WSW to half decent players available. I think we will be signing the Shannon Cole and La Rocca's this off season and hoping for mid table next year.
Which is amazing.. Wait, i mean terrifying! Terrifying is the word I wanted.
Here's hoping Plague is correct and those Bundesliga Giants knew what they were talking about when they took a little gander at young Benjamin. Maybe he could transition into a CB in 3-5-2 and only have to spray passes to Wingbacks and Def Mid's?
The concessions received are probably why Merrick signed Kanta - as he's going to have less impact on the cap than alternatives. Without the concessions, he'd probably be looking for a new club
As far as a improved squad I really don't know. History suggests that the gap between the haves and have not clubs gets greater every season. I think the wooden spoon is a given for the Jets - but if we can at least not make it official until the last week of the new season that will be good enough.
My standards and expectations of this club were lowered several years ago.
I think we can easily achive 7th/8th next season with almost the players we currently have signed if Merrick gets some tactics sorted out early and everyone plays to their level. Add 3 more decent signings and we should be fine to avoid the spoon next year IF Merrick gets the system right AND the players deliver.
Then, in the next off season, we would be able to attract a better calibre of player without burning the entire salary cap on a few players. In order to attract better players we need to be more attractive, we may just have to settle with a few players we don't love and get them to play to their best in order to find better replacements.
Holosko is willing to drop his wages down from marquee just to stay at sydney and play in Asia next year. That's the best thing to happen to the A league for many years and what we should aspire to. We need to improve the club/league enough so that players want to come in here to play, not just to get paid like the Cahills and Bridges and ADPs of yester year.
Clut and/or Kokko & others looked shit because of the positions they were played in. And the people played around them. Hard to judge off little game time.
New season, hopefully new approach and time for these guys to step up their game significantly, regardless.
We got the spoon with the squad we had, so everyone needs to step up.
So much for that....
