They would have beat Hungary and finish top 2 if best third didn't qualify. They went down 3 times in that game and manage to come back each time. Portugal have benefited from the restructure of the tournament.
Generally speaking, if you have the poor performances they had in the group stage, then you will be knocked out.
Personally I don't like it. Every team has to qualify for the finals, so having 16 there should not be an issue.
Although with the 24 team finals, we have seen some of the smaller teams do rather well, we have not seen poor group stage performances punished.
In saying that, I think they have to stick with it now or increase it again to 32. It's a reasonable and feasible option when you consider some of the countries that missed out in qualifying this time around.
It will go to 32, especially if the World Cup goes to 40 as they were discussing this morning.
