Speculation is mounting that Football Federation Australia is trying to engineer an early end to its four-year $160 million broadcast deal with Fox Sports *Australia and SBS.
The deal, which includes A-league matches, Socceroo games and the Asian Cup tournament that began on Friday night, is in its second year.
Football authorities are said to be concerned about soft ratings for A-league matches on SBS, which relies on some funding from the federal government for its share of the rights, and believe they can extract more value from a deal with free-to-air commercial networks such as Seven West Media and Network Ten.
It is understood both Seven and Ten have indicated to the FFA they would be at least interested in *discussing a new deal when negotiations open.
FFA chief executive David Gallop would not comment on any move to end the current deal, saying: “Every match that is broadcast, including the Asian Cup, shows the attraction of the sport and points towards the next broadcast deal we will have.”
Any deal before the present contract expires in 2017 would be contingent on Fox Sports agreeing to bring negotiations forward and SBS, which may not break even on its coverage, *giving up its rights. The FFA could move before the third season of the deal or even the end of the current 2014-15 season.
Authorities are said to be confident of achieving a big increase in the value, potentially up to $80 million annually, though such a rise is contingent on networks believing football can gain significantly higher ratings that it does now.
Fox Sports holds the majority of the football rights. It broadcasts all A-league matches, Socceroos’ games and the Asian Cup live, while SBS simulcasts one A-league game each Friday night.
The ABC signed a deal late last year enabling it to show some Asian Cup group games on delay and latter stages of the tournament, including any involving the Socceroos, live.
FFA executives, meanwhile, will travel to Newcastle this week to meet the management of the Nathan Tinkler-owned Newcastle Jets.
*Speculation intensified last week that Mr Tinkler could relinquish his licence to own the team after its CEO Robbie Middleby and chairman Ray Baartz quit last week.
Mr Tinkler has previously indicated publicly he wants to sell the club, although a search for new owners in Europe last year proved fruitless.
However, it is understood the former billionaire placated FFA management, at least in the short term, after discussions on Friday where he indicated he wanted to continue his ownership of the Jets.
The team’s management will use the A-league break during the Asian Cup to undertake a mid-season review. The Jets are in second-last position in the competition, ahead of only the Western *Sydney Wanderers.
Interesting the FFA want to **** SBS off
Double eff aye don't owe SBS anything. SBS treated the double eff aye and A-League with utter disdain when they were trying to get the comp started.
Can't wait to hear Paul Wade and Big Jim Wilson calling the games for Channel 7.
Give it to Channel Ten.
Ten = Mel
how do we seriously support this club when players continue to walk out the door. overseas I can understand but any Jet looking to go to sydney FC should be shot at dawn. Thats just not on. Beginning to think we need to close the Jets down altogether as no team to support would be less painful than losing players and breaking up the team. They are doing my head in. Cant you tell
Juric turned down Chinese club payday to try his luck in Europe. Obviously enough people got in his ear to convince him $$$$ isn't going to make him what he could be!
Who gives a **** who is going?? (Unless It is carney of course)
Lets just all face the hugh penis on the foreshore and prey our thanks that we still have the Griff.
And.....
The contradictions in this place are beyond baffling. You all moan about how poorly the team is being run and when the people in question leave the sky falling.
Don't get me wrong, there are many many things wrong with this club starting with the ownership, but removing 2 board members and 2 fringe squad players is a positive thing.
As far as rumours go, they're rumours. Hardly worth getting your panties in a twist.
If I can sumarise
Carney is signing with SFC.....except that he isn't. Fox sports reporting this morning that he is too expensive for SFC
Hoole, Neville are attracting offers for next season from other clubs........Wow that's devastating news. If none of our players were of interest to other clubs we would really be in trouble.
Birraz interested in a move. Our current No 2 keeper apparently wants to move on.....wow, what unexpected terrible news.
We are running 2nd last and if it wasn't for the ACL I sure we would be last. Keeping our entire squad as is will ensure we get the spoon. I hope big Phil continues to move on a lot more than just the 2 players that have gone before January ends
