Would be wasting a spot if he signs without someone leaving, still need 1 more u/20 and hopefully the last 2 spots would go to quality attacking players.
I would have Chianese over Nabbout. Chianese can use both feet quite capably.
Mckinna in the Herald on record we are signing 2 Visas, but one is now going to be a development player from China. Which will smooth the way for a major sponsor.
Not sure how happy I am but I guess the long term viability of the club comes first. Would be happy if the sponsorship paid the way for a high profile guest player.
This means the only way Nabbout could be signed is if someone leaves.
I guess it depends what is considered a "development player" Song for example was great for us, he was here at a youngish age to develop his game to move to Europe. There are plenty of great 20 - 21 year olds we could sign from Asia.
And if it means we have more money to put towards the other Visa player, it might not be a terrible thing!
Expect a few whingers but we had to expect this in return for financial stability.
Not sure young Chinese players are as technically advanced as are young koreans or young Japaneses...
Like any player in this squad, they won't be signed to a long term contract. I'd suggest given the importance on a Visa player they will be signed for 1 year.
If it's for two and they turn out to be a great prospect we would get a transfer fee for them, just like any player.
And realistically, if they didn't work out it wouldn't be any different to many of the league's Visa spots. For example, how often did the Roar see Polenz and Solórzano last year? Hughes for City? Rodriguez for Nix? faty for Sydney?
We normally have a 4 out of 5 success rate.
A couple of key quotes from the article:
Quote:
“He needs to be able to play a part in the team this year,” McKinna said. “There is no good just signing someone for the sake of it. He has to be good enough to compete for a position.”
McKinna said they have had talks with clubs about potential loan deals and were most likely to target players who play in wide areas.
“That would be the easiest transition,” McKinna said.
McKinna said if the Jets can find the right player in China, it would free up more funds for Miller to spend on the other import.
Im ok with it as long as it means the striker we sign up as the other visa is a step up to what we are used to.
Lets hope for a song type acquisition.

Combine that with a local league that drastically overpays players. I have real doubts about this as its at odds with Lee's desire to make top 3. Your Visa players are what makes or breaks your squad. And as we know our squad is not up to scratch with the rest of the league. We were relying on these Visa Players to lift the quality of the playing group and in my opinion we don't have the room for a development Visa player.
Remember Miller left these 2 positions aside until the playing budget was known. I doubt he expected to effectively lose one to a development player.
Lee should offset signing the development player by using some of this sponsorship to secure a year long guest player who can be an additional Visa player. Then everyone wins.
Jets are garbage.
Anything would be an upgrade at this point.
I was going to have my 2 bobs worth but pretty much I am thinking along the same lines as Borat here.
If he is a gun, happy days but if he is a dud it is not going to go down good at all as a PR exercise.
A-League squads are small and really there is noe space for a "development player" whether he is from Charlestown, China or wherever....
Developmental player identified:
Ban Wun Yin.
From the Chinese second division. Plays along side Tak Ng Pis.
Thought it might be Ni Shin-to.
No issue with a token squaddie to get shirt sales and sponsorship revenue from OS. Not like the whole plastic league isn't already the epitome of modern Football. It's the logical next step.
Chinese kid who's dad does business with ledman, dad's business throws a gazillion dollars at the club to get his kid a gig. Club sells a millions shirts in China and uses the gazillion to sign Cahill. Club then also sells a gazillion Cahill shirts.
This game is now all absolutely it money, this deal will help us make money.
We only blow up if the money is then only returned to Ledmans pockets not the club future development.
We've been wanting some shrewd business to be done in our favour.... Best we enjoy the ride!
Don't Ledman have strategic ties to the CFA?
It won't be a token player, I fully expect it to be someone that the CFA has high hopes of developing into a proper star. Similar to how Ki Sung-yueng grew up in Brisbane... Newy might be home to some bloke who goes on to bigger and better things.
(dreaming)
The words "developmental" and "compete" don't exactly inspire you with confidence that we are signing a player who is ready to perform as the proven Visa signing we need. That and China aren't renowned for producing technically gifted players.
I get why we are doing this and what the advantages are, but just sign a guest so the team doesn't suffer as a result because we own't be making the top 6 with a passenger Visa signing
I reckon.
And I reckons its not at all dependent on how good the player is.
Business is business.
While it probably doesn't involve gazillions or Cahill it will involve building cash flow from China.
Lee wants a presence in the ACL. So will sponsors. The aleague is a cheaper way to get there than through China.
If wants bang for his buck then he be better off getting us a Heskey or an ADP or a Dwight Yorke etc
Some ****er that people in this country have heard of and some ****er people in China have heard of
What's the point of bringing in some Chinese Yoof player that no **** in China has heard of either??
No value in that unless he signs us the 17 year old Chinese Lionel Messi of the future. Who lets face it ain't coming to play in this country if he is that good
Maybe we should get a young chinese keeper, we can tell him which way to dive each time Boogard concede a penalty
Reft, go reft
Chinese kid costs 58K, you sell 58K shirts.
ADP (type) costs 580K you still only sell 58K shirts.
Chinese player "might" be "bought" back by a Chinese club for 58K and you've profited by selling 58K shirts.
ADP (type) moves to Chinese club on free. You make no profit.
Also Chinese kid attracts Chinese sponsors.
The short answer - it's less risky trying a no name Chinese kid than trying to sign Jamie Vardy.
But this Chinese kid your talking about. Is he gonna sell shirts when in China??
Is he gonna have enough of a profile in China that people will follow his exploits in Newy??
I am backing no
If he cracks it a big Euro Club then yes.
Asians are prone to jumping on the bandwagon of successful teams and big name players
Go there and they all wearing Man U Chelsea Barca shirts
They barely follow the local stuff and are Euro snobs of the highest order
fait point, take shirt sales out of it and just keep the sponsorships and it's still a less risky deal.
