That to me seems heavily slanted but I will note for the purpose of this I will be looking at simply numbers and not the nature of each foul or discretion.
Now it's more likely that a player will receive a booking while the team are defending, not attacking, which is something we have been doing a lot of this season. Unfortunately I don't have the figures to use this data, but it's just a theory.
I decided to look at fouls drawn and committed by the teams. Jets players have been fouled approximately 283 times this season, while a Jets player has fouled an opposing player 336 times. If we are looking at frequencies, a Jets player is getting booked approximately once every 6 challenges while the opposition are booked once approximately every 11 challenges.
So maybe the opposition are spreading the challenges around? Not the case, the Jets have had 174 "players" commit fouls, while 167 opposition players have committed fouls.
And how many “warnings” should the players get? I thought after a players 4th foul it would be enough for a booking for “incessant fouling”. Of the 10 opposition players who committed 4 or more fouls, only 3 received a booking. Similarly of the 20 Jets players with 4 or more fouls, 11 received a booking.
What can’t be measured by the analysis is, as I mentioned earlier, how bad the challenge was which earned a booking. Nor can the reason for it – I don’t have that information. But just looking at the data what’s obvious is that despite a minor to moderate difference in the number of fouls committed, the Jets may be getting a raw deal. But then it’s always been like that. We’ve always received more cards than the opposition but I’m really starting to wonder why. Are we thugs or are we getting a raw deal? Happy for people’s thoughts.
