We are going to be meeting with the Jets on Thursday afternoon.
We will be discussing issues around active support: the new area on the Southern Hill, ticketing arrangements, security and policing, and any other relevant topics.
To ensure we canvass opinion from a wide a range of supporters as possible, we would like to ask anyone to send us feedback either reply below or via email squadronfsc@gmail.com or via social media.
If you have had a positive or negative experience or you have any suggestions or feedback on how to improve the new active support arrangements implemented this season, please email/post/tweet them through.

we wish to thank all supporters who contacted us with feedback regarding active support issues. We have been able to negotiate the following items with respect to active support:
- anyone holding a jets membership anywhere in the stadium can gain entry into the active support bay at any time without a specialised ticket by simply showing your members card. This negates the need to swap your membership outside the stadium for a specific squadron ticket prior to the match. This will also allow free movement into the bay during the match for those supporters who wish to join in during the game (subject to capacity)
- the active support area will be monitored and access will closed off when capacity is reached. If you wish to join active support, you will need to enter the bay prior to it being closed to prevent overcrowding
- a common sense approach to children purchasing squadron tickets from ticket windows who won’t be required to submit details if accompanied and purchasing with a parent/guardian
- unfortunately we were unable to get any amendments to purchasing tickets online, only single adult tickets will be available via ticketmasters website. This is due to ticketmaster’s system.
- squadron tickets are available for sale at any ticket window at the stadium on gameday, however there will continue to be a dedicated active support window at the southern entry gates.
we hope that these measures remove some of the barriers supporters have previously experienced when trying to join active support, and that this will have a positive effect on numbers for future games. We must also sincerely thank both club and stadium officials for their willingness to work with us to improve the experience and attendances for active supporters.

Recently, many of you would have seen a decline in numbers in The Squadron and the emergence of a new group on the southern terrace who call themselves NCL. We realise that this situation has created a lot of confusion for people, so we would like to clear a few things up.
According to FFA guidelines an active support group must meet the following basic requirements:
– They must be in an enclosed, ticketed area (not General Admission, for example).
– Security must check all ticket holders.
We have and still do strongly oppose the strict enforcement of these rules because we believe it is against the spirit of free and spontaneous active support. However, they are the rules the FFA applies to all clubs and as long as the Jets are in the A-League they have to abide by them.
There can only be one designated active supporter area, and for us that is the seats on Southern Hill behind the goals.
On Tuesday afternoon we had a meeting with the club and NCL about the future of active support for the Jets.
For the record, we are more than happy to (1) combine with NCL to allow both groups to leverage numbers and experience for a united and better active support or (2) step aside and allow for NCL to become the main active support group.
Regrettably, and contrary to previous statements from NCL, they do not wish to become the official supporter group and abide by the previously mentioned restrictions. NCL also made it clear that they do not wish to work with The Squadron or even take over the current active support on the Southern Hill.
While we accept and have always defended the right for people to support the team how they want but we understand there are safety concerns that the stadium and the Jets must manage including the location of active support groups.
We encourage anyone and everyone to form a united front in supporting the team. The Squadron name was never meant to describe a specific group of supporters, it instead applies to all Jets supporters. Wherever you are in the stadium, we want everyone to be united in lifting the team and letting everyone know they are in Newcastle.

It was sad to see the Squadron disperse at the last home game. It's not bad to see the NCL thrive. I think just like in the old days of The Squadron and Kamikaze, there is a place for both. There is a place for people who want to have an official relationship with the club and there is a place for people who want their own space but just want to come on to the games and have fun, without the burden of organising anything. When the two work happily together on game day it can create a great atmosphere. Especially with call and response and player interaction.
Given that the NCL don't want to take up any offical position in the ground and with the club, it seems that the The Squadron needs to be revived. I enjoyed coming behind the goal with you guys for the Mariners game.
Can I ask what you think the problem is? Is every position on the Committee filled? If so, what seems to be lacking? I haven't seen any chat on here about the Squadron for a long time. Maybe some open and honest discussion might show a way forward.

I still think Newcastle has a massive issue of people wanting to enjoy the atmosphere, but not contribute to it.
I haven't attended many games over the last few years due to work commitments in Sydney, so can't really comment on recent happenings, but the handful of games I have seen, there's a distinct, "Can't be bothered" amongst the general population. NTUA plays and even when the words are in front of people, they don't sing. Their choice.
I've been to a handful of Wanderers games, as people from work have had spare tickets, and I'm a fan of football regardless of level or team in most situations. A lot of people use them as a benchmark, and its simple, everyone gets involved. The blokes I go with are 40+, and they are jumping around doing the Poznan, screaming the chants, all from the non-active areas. They just want to be involved, and for whatever reason, 90% of the fans are on board to create that atmosphere. Kudos to them for that. Time will tell whether this is a long term thing, if their results drop and plateau as ours did, maybe their membership and atmosphere will drop. But nonetheless, everyone contributes, whether they be 10, 60 or 20 and in the RBB, they all contribute.
I remember some of the best nights being in the Squadron watching us beat Roar in the Semi, playing the Scum and Sydney, and Grand Final day. It was just the place to be! I'd take mates along and they'd have a blast, and want more.
Everyone that runs the Squadron over the years has done an immense and thankless job. Nobody deserves more plaudits than you guys for your continued and dedicated support.
I guess the challenge, as most companies/businesses/services/everything face, is staying relevant. I'm not sure how to become more relevant. I guess the most challenging thing is getting in new people, and keeping them. It's hard, i don't doubt that. And i'm not sure there's an easy fix.
A Squadron "open day" for games vs Sydney/Mariners could be an idea. A presence out the front of the stadium, people distributing flyers with a few of the specific to Scum/Smurfs chants on, targeting the groups of Teens/20s. Those games are the best to showcase the fun and possibilities of active support - supporting your team and making life a little difficult for the opposition and having some fun doing so.
I don't want to sound like an armchair critic, or a WSW fanboy, I still watch all the Jets games live or on replay and attend when I can. It would be truly sad to see the Squadron cease. I know there's only so much you can do with liasing with other groups. LFC have a myriad of separate groups within the KOP, who are quite proudly part of their organisation and the KOP. It would be nice if NCL or any other groups, could maybe sit/stand near eachother and learn from one another and evolve the Squadron and NCL and others into something bigger and collective as Furns has commented on.
It's all a pipe dream and the people involved with the Squadron can only do so much. But seriously, I think everyone appreciates the effort you guys put into active support and I truly hope that everyone can unite to get behind the team and club, and hopefully with improved results, bolster those numbers and thrive like the earlier years.

Bay 55 is very lethargic and a number of people in the central bays get on the team's back really quickly if things aren't going well. There are audible groans when Hoffman makes an incomplete pass, for example. I've got to admit I participate in this.
It's as if the whole Jets crowd is sufferring from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and poor performances take us straight back to the horror years.
I have concerns that if the current state of affairs between the 2 supporter groups continues that Newcastle will be left without Active Support.
I hope that sense prevails and some common ground can be sought, because after a long battle with ineptitude on the field and in the board room - the club actually seem to be turning things around.
At the end of the day, I hope we all want the same thing - to support the team and be there for them.

BTW I hate that marketing slogan "Together We Can Soar". IMO any club that relies on propaganda to speak to their supporters doesn't have a genuine relationship with them. It's treating them like arm's length consumers, which is probably why the Jets have a "Consumer Operations Manager". Eergh!

Getting out of the sun in Bay 2 was a good idea but the corner just didn't work. I couldn't hear from Bay 55. So now the Squadron is back to those very seats that I was going to use in the first place. I went down there against the Mariners and it was great. I've been able to hear the Squadron from behind the goals in Bay 55, even though there weren't many of them. So the original problem on the grass hill must not apply to the seated area.
I personally don't begrudge anyone returning to Bay 1. But active support has been wandering the stadium like the Jews in the wilderness. I think "active support" with organised tifo can work from behind the goals. It's worth a try. That is the traditional home for the loudest fans and I loved giving shit to Izzo. I also think that two groups working together in goodwill could be great for the club. I can see two distinct roles that each fulfill, and it always was the case. Even in Bay 1/Bay2. Each attracted different people.
So in the name of propaganda. Come join the "RAGE IN THE CAGE!". For those who are inclined to tifo, create your own standards and bring them. That's what the cage is for. Parents, feel free to send your teenage kids there to have fun. The Squadron has always been accused of being a bunch of teenagers, but they'll be safe in the cage and maybe a year down the track they will migrate over to ncl, or come back, or whatever. i don't care.
