In my opinion, they are perhaps heading in the correct direction. Initially, the Solo Cup or whatever it was, cost a fair bit of $$$$ for clubs to enter, so, to increase the participation, they doctored the draw a little bit over the years to guarantee representation. As, hardly anybody from lower leagues would pay for a $$$ trial game. SO, they needed numbers.
I'm not sure what bigger clubs would give up a crack at reaching the final 32...Really, the opportunity is there for the 9 NPL teams to push forward in this competition and make a bit of a name for themselves now.
As and aside, isn't the FFA Cup final 32 draw rigged so A-League teams play each other?
