Look at our defensive setup and structure under Stanton and how backwards guys like Natta are going. Who the **** wants to join that mess as a defender

Apparently we reached out to Lachy Jackson but were unable to afford what he was asking
Also saw a rumour that we’re trying to move on Welli in this January window which seems nonsensical to me
Makes sense only because of what Stanton is doing.
Last season and this it is obvious he prefers younger players, that he knows, who will do as they are told. The list of experienced players do not appear to have been utilised properly. As soon as he dropped Hoff and Carl first go last year showed he didn't have much time for them, same with O'Neill and invisible Frenchman. He is sticking to a Plan A with no flexibility and I don't think he supports the older heads much, probably because they stick up for themselves.
This may sound left field, but I do think it would be worth starting with Rose up front, Welli on the left, Kota on the right and Charlie in the mids with Kosta back where he was. Might not work but worth a try showing some confidence in these guys. And how much worse could it be??? Doesn't fix defence but may get us some more goals and fire the team up.
What is obvious is that Rose and Welli have passion and Kota showed more passion in 30 mins on Saturday than most of the first team did all season. Honest, some of these kids would back down like a Colombian president if you hit them with a wet wipe - they look that fragile. I do think there is a player in Welli, but he looks like he is low in confidence and support.

Story on why Joey Champness left Auckland
Jackson?s signed with Victory so that?s the end of that rumour. Real shame, seems like he was most interested in us but we couldn?t make a deal on the financial side of things
Any other CBs people think we could look into
Dead to me - nobody from 2018 should play for the cheating filth of MV...
Welli isn't up to standard and neither is the person that recruited him.
Feel sorry for Welli though moving halfway around the world to not be suitable because recruitment got it terribly wrong.
Heard on A-League video Alex Grant is available but I'm getting the sense from articles on A-Leagues that he is signing for Sydney FC to replace Matthews.
I think he would have been a handy pick up too.
Grimaldi gone. (Plus Bowling and Piazza.)
Considering we've been playing a CM there instead of him, I think he must have known he wasn't going to get a starting gig anytime soon. Hopefully he kicks on elsewhere, he seems athletic enough and strong in the tackle, just needs to work on positioning and ball playing a little if he wants to be starting at this level. Both of which things that come with age anyways.
Really? This list posted at the start of the thread had him down as expiring next year hence that assumption
Double checked as well and this article from Feb 2024 says he’s signed a 2 year contract - https://newcastlejetsfc.com.au/news/...aldi-re-signs/
That quote (in regards to Welli) rings true for tonight. imagine flying half way around the world only to be kept on the bench in your teams one of three biggest games of the season in a game we were never winning. At this point I’d rather we move him on for our sake and for his, and give what few minutes he gets to Nunes or Bracco who could use the experience
Maurice was on NBN the other day saying that in the future they hope to have the bulk of the team made from local players. That would mean the total dismantling of the current talent development system, which I would be in favour of because it obviously doesn't produce anything. It's a nice vision but would need Trumpy to make it work
He hinted as much on the Podcast.
My impression was basically ?the guys have don?t a great job with no support or money BUT when the time is right we?ll dump some coin in there as well as bringing in more people?
I hope that means that Ryan Campbell and the Zane Brothers (the 3 he mentioned by name), will be looked after and a role will still be there for them in some form or fashion. Maybe promote Ryan to the Senior Men?s in an Assistant role and give Zane a role in our currently non-existent scouting department.
Gotta look after some locals.
Maurice seemed to be a fan, I don?t know much of him tbh other than he has risen up the ranks over the last couple years.
Didn?t realise there was some negativity towards him.
Hey, see that kid at Adelaide? We should sign him. Archie Goodwin is his name apparently.
Wanted to go somewhere with more stability and a track record of bringing players on?
Well with no football for a bit just wanted to post an up-to-date squad list in here and put some thoughts next to those coming off contract who is worth resigning at this point in time.

29 Justin Vidic - 24/25
24 Alex Nunes - 25/26
44 Ben van Dorssen - 25/26
28 Will Dobson - 25/26
18 Kota Mizunuma (option to sign on for next year) - We need to trigger the extension. He's proved his capability and he offers more through his on field organisation. I would expect he is also supporting with off field leadership too.
14 Dane Ingham - I struggle to see how Dane fits in the team since the move to 3 at the back. He doesn't replace Mizunuma. He doesn't replace Aquilina/Cancar in the RCB role either. As a NZ international, he will be wanting to play. I think Dane moves on.
19 Callum Timmins - I think he moves on with Charles taking his place. Had his best game of the season last week, mind you. I could see him as a handy pick up for a team but when Susnjar comes back I think Grozos replaces him (and partners Bayliss)
20 Charles M'Mombwa (option to sign on for next year) - Handy option off the bench.
01 Ryan Scott - As Mark325, he's a very handy keeper. It would all be about money and ambition, I suspect. Scott is better than many of 1st choice keepers in the league at the moment so I don't think he will be short of offers.
23 Daniel Wilmering - I disagree about getting rid of him. His energy and athleticism on the left is incredible. He's reliably available. But where I do agree is that he needs competition. We're lacking in this space. I could even see a world where he explores overseas too but regardless we should attempt to re-sign.
10 Wellisol - I don't see a world where we activate the extension clause in his contract.
06 Matthew Scarcella (Loan from SYD) - I disagree with Mark325 (and because they're the only one to have shared their position so far - sorry Mark325), I wouldn't retain Scarcella despite his versatility.
13 Clayton Taylor - He's a priority re-signing. He's a valuable asset in the business plan of Maverick. If he was playing like he is now earlier in the season I suggest we'd have lost him in January. I'd be surprised if he's playing in this league next season.
I'm pretty much of the same mind as Jeterpool, but i'd be happy to see Timmins retained as a bit of investment for 2 years down the track. Grozos ain't getting younger.
What about Bailey Wells surely he is as good if not better than some vying for midfield spots now
I get the vibe if Zads keeps his brissy job he’ll be going there. But, for one I don’t think Zads will keep that job, and surely if his local club offers him as good of a contract, and said local club is performing at a higher quality then he would surely be interested.
Now the season is probably over (unless we fail to retain 9th) and with the news confirmed Stanton isn't staying around, are there any changes to anyone's squad retentions above?
I think we're a change to sell a few too. Wouldn't be surprised to see Aquilina and Adams attract some interest, myself.
Expiring 24/25
18 Kota Mizunuma (option to sign on for next year) - Valuable squad addition just for the vibes.
14 Dane Ingham - Keep if reasonably priced, useful squad player, versatile.
19 Callum Timmins - Has grown on me particularly the second half of the season. For presumably a reasonable price, worth keeping.
20 Charles M'Mombwa (option to sign on for next year) - Potentially OK as a squad player, doesn't suit our playing style as part of a starting XI.
01 Ryan Scott - OK to keep.
23 Daniel Wilmering - Serviceable is about the biggest compliment I can give, I think/hope we can do better at left back.
10 Wellisol - Haven't seen enough to know really, but assume he is lacking in either quality, fitness or attitude to have not gotten much of a run. Look elsewhere.
06 Matthew Scarcella (Loan from SYD) - Look elsewhere, we should not be taking loan signings unless they are guns and improve our starting XI.
13 Clayton Taylor - Still rough around the edges but has game breaking quality, definitely the style of player we should be targeting. Keep.
Expiring 25/26
15 Aleks Susnjar
21 Noah James - Did OK, happy to keep, but does need to work on catching, cost us a few goals at times.
17 Kosta Grozos - Still needs to work on the defensive side if he is going to stay in CB, but has been OK there.
39 Thomas Aquilina - One of our best this season and a big improvement from last year.
04 Phillip Cancar
33 Mark Natta - Similar to Kosta, needs to work on the defensive side of being a CB. His passes to break lines are top notch however.
09 Lachlan Rose
37 Lachlan Bayliss - Thought he was anonymous at the start of the season, has improved a bit at the CM position. There is a good footballer there, but not sure he currently has a position where he is starting XI quality in a top A-League team.
22 Ben Gibson - Thought he did decent at the start of the season, seems like a smart footballer.
25 Oscar Fryer
Expiring 26/27
07 Eli Adams
Scholarships
29 Justin Vidic - 24/25 - Would have liked to see a bit more of him, hard to say either way, but he did provide something different.
24 Alex Nunes - 25/26
44 Ben van Dorssen - 25/26
28 Will Dobson - 25/26
An assortment of thoughts on the Squad.
Important upgrades I would like to see would be LB, and 1-2 players in the middle, a dominant 6 and/or a more dynamic/creative 8/10 to fill the Piscopo/Penha/Dimi role.
