They are both the same person anyway
You look at our options in attack now; Kokko, Nordstrand, Haliti, Brown, Hoole, Nabbout, Clut as compared to last year we definitely have more depth and coverage in positions. Unless we are hit with injuries/suspensions I don't think we will be seeing much of Cooper, Pavicevic and Brennan.
Players aren't performing this season, they need to be subbed, dropped. To a certain extent Miller's options were fairly limited last season, definitely not the case going into this season.
So James Gardiner has posted on Twitter that the FFA have confirmed Brennan is a mature age rookie. That leaves an additional squad position because that position sits outside of the cap.
I found this quote in the Herald from Miller very interesting
Kokko’s signing brings the roster to 22. The Chinese player chairman Martin Lee wants at the club will take them to the A-League maximum of 23, and Miller still must sign a third under-20 player. But an FFA spokesman said Andy Brennan, who signed from the Tasmanian NPL, was classed as a mature-age rookie and not counted in the squad limit.
“It comes down to finalising the under-20 spot, and identifying a Chinese player, and possibly moving some players out,” Miller said. “If we can get to 16 starting options this year, I’d be very pleased, considering we only had 10 to 12 last year.”
And striking options of Kokko, Nordstrand and Haliti is by far the most depth we have had in many years.
So Brennan signs a 2yr deal with the Jets in May 2015 and the FFA announce changes to the salary cap in August 2015 to include a mature age rookie.
So I can see the FFA allowing us to then designate Brennan as the mature age rookie once the rules were changed in August. Similar to shifting a contracted player to marquee.
But the problem then is we did not have enough players in the squad. We signed the minimum 20 + Lundy as Pro contracted NYL. You take Brennan out of the cap as a mature age rookie and we have 19 and the FFA could have breached us for not meeting squad requirements.
Plus you have the club making numerous statements that we weren't going to use these additional allowances due to the player budget.
So, on face value it seems like we are rorting the salary cap by now signing a 24th player, if in fact the unquoted FFA spokesperson is correct. If the FFA are happy, then fine. This rort allows us to sign the Chinese player which brings exposure to the league. Not sure other clubs would be too worried unless we make the 6 or this Chinese player is any good.
I am happy to be proven wrong, and nothing surprises me with the FFA, but I still doubt we will be allowed to shift Brennan to Mature Age Rookie.
I doubt the validity of Pariss's FFA source and question why Miller or McKinna has made made no such comment.
I think it's more likely we are trying to move on 1 or 2 players and then exploring loopholes if that is not successful.
brennan is already a mature aged rookie. if he wasnt then kok would be 23, chinese 24, no room for 3rd under 20
Who are our 2 under 20 signings? Is it Vujica and Alessi? I remember reading Vujica had been signed as on a "full A-League contract" in the club announcement and assumed he wasn't filling on of these spots.
We also have the chance to sign an injury replacement u/20 for Alessi.
