Merrick got the nod here because he's out of favour as a coach and would have signed up for not a lot of coin. Nobody else wanted him, he was available cheap - Jets signed him. Game Over.

I also think with higher priced coaches comes higher priced demands. Things like coaches wanting to bring their own staff with them, demanding budget of a certain amount to get certain players, etc. There's lots of factors that would go into it. I think one of the big reasons Merrick was brought on was it seems like he has been happy to come in on his own and work with the existing setup for the most part.
