They released some box contraption that you had to press down on that was supposed to "cut" the glad wrap but that didn't work either. They stopped selling what I used to buy so I had to buy this shitfully designed piece of crap.
Why change it when I worked!?!

I tried that, funnily enough. However there isn't enough rigidity in the lid for it to properly tear the wrap. It bends and folds and the roll is more likely to come out.

Make your own box for it out of cardboard/timber/whatever, specifically to how you want it, and put the new roll of glad wrap in your box each time.
