November 16 2005 - The day Griff took us to the world cup

Can someone start a poll please to find out the best moment of the night.
    1. Griffs goal.
    2. Griffs 2 penalty saves.
    3. Griffs deciding penalty.

If you were one of the 529,000 people who now claim to have been there, post your stories.
    What a great ****ing night.

Also, doc on Fox Monday night at 9pm supposed to go alright. Looks like there is too much Gypo Arnie in it though.

Did i mention it was a great ****ing night?

honestly was there. great night. we were at the non-penalty end, but that gave us a good view of the post game sprint.

when johnny boy nailed it the whole place just went bezerk.

walking out of the stadium trying to get in touch with a mate, mobile system was completely jammed, thought we had no chance of catching up, all of the sudden she's flying through the crowd screaming like a nutter and launching herself at me. lucky she's pretty small.

got some dinner at hungry jacks in the city and then finished off with an impromptu march with a few dozen other people and a police escort down george st. cops were loving it.

    bloody fantastic.

any of the Cooks Hill boys on here that were sitting on the halfway line at the front of the top tier?

anyone else remember almost going over that railing?
would have been happy to have ended it all there tbh.

    genuine euphoria.

Was so nervous/drunk I can't remember much of the first half besides my mate telling me kewell was coming on.

When I finally pulled my head from between my knees to look up he was scuffing his shot to assist the ball to
    Best goal celebration ever!

I've never heared such a noise when aloisi's pen went it.
I was at the far end to it and still remember seeing the net move, and some primal demonic scream escaped my mouth.

Ran round the stadium outside afterwards finding mates who were scattered throughout the stadium, never hugged so many random people in all my life.

The next day at work I was out and about and every radio station in Sydney was wall to wall socceroos for the entire morning.

    Still got my ticket too!

Great night...wuz at the penalty end. Oddly I felt calm at the game. I would have been a nervous wreck watching it on tv.
Memories are like it was in slow motion...being hugged by crying men who I did not know made it very surreal.
For some reason we were told at the stadium to leave immediately or we would miss the final trains so left sooner than would have liked.
Brilliant trip home to watch the recording then straight to work still in my gear....
Jets GF win came close but this was the greatest moment I have witnessed in sport.

really excited for the documentary tonight actually.

they have made the lead up to it really good with the articles

bit mystified as to why they are showing it so late, but will watch regardless.

I also still think we had it won when kewell slotted the first pen.

never seen a bloke walk up so calmly at the start of the such an important shootout.

I reckon the whole team gained confidence from that moment.

Yeah don't you reakon that (aside from Viduka) all of the penalties were never going to miss.

I can't have been the only one a bit bemused when Vidman and Neill stepped up but they handled the moment brilliantly.

Agree with Kewell though he was a force of nature that night.

underrated part: Craig Fosters commentary. Starts out trying to be the super analyst, but by the end he's an unabashed fan just screaming the team on.

    Aaron Kearney on facebook.

    Some saw Phar Lap run...
    Some saw Bradman bat...
Ten years ago tonight, I had literally the best seat in the house for what I believe to be the greatest Australian sporting moment of the modern era.
Not that I used the seat much.
I was on the sideline talking to Australia on the national broadcaster only metres away from THAT goal.

Physically, that night is still with me in the form of lingering tinnitus. I kept turning up my headphones so I could hear the other members of the commentary team, Peter Wilkins and Andy Harper over the ever-louder crowd noise. I failed. I talked when I thought they weren't. They let me.
Those full-bore headphones, combined with the unrelenting din that drowned the Olympic Stadium from so many apoplectic fans left my hearing forever compromised.
The tingling of my skin and slightly bewildered smile did eventually fade.

It is the emotion, though, that is burned into my memory.
Even those who lived it find it hard, I think, to fully recall what a catharsis this was.
Those who loved the game had recently witnessed some of its darkest days but had also seen some undeniably brave decisions to re-invent it for the new millennium.
Brave, but dripping with potential for epic failure.
Even those who didn't love the game knew any claim by Australia to the title of great sporting nation was hollow without success in this code.
Modern Australia is worldly and of the world and this was the world game.
But we needed a blessing from the football Gods.
Gods made immortal in places like Uruguay.
Why would they turn their backs on Los Charrúas?
And yet that night they conspired to smile on a young nation at the bottom of the world.
They sent us back to the World Cup of football.

They say it ended a 32 year drought.
But as I stood among those players on the field at fulltime, dwarfed by a wall of gold on every side, it was evident that it was much more.
A million years of collective pain, lived out day after day by every single person who loved the game and loves this country, came to an end that night.
Football earned respect - home and away - in one explosive millisecond.
    The reluctant conceded.
    The faithful were vindicated.
The game that mattered everywhere else mattered here.
    Fate did a U-turn.
And from that moment, anything was possible.
A decade on, there are fresh hopes and dreams for the game and, of course, fresh fears.
One day, perhaps in the distant future, Australia will lift the World Cup and November 16, 2005, will be a day of misty, mythical folklore.
If I live to see the Green and Gold lift the gold, I will tell my Great Grandchildren all they have heard about that November night long ago is true.
And they will laugh and call me a liar when I tell them Grandad described it for people all over Australia on something called a radio.
    But I did.
And it was like Bradman riding Phar Lap.

Took 20 odd Cookers down in a group.
Proposed to the (German) girlfriend about 5 minutes after the last kick. It was so loud, I had to ask twice!
We had already secured the 3 x 3 round game tickets (missus, her old man and I) going through Germany's ticketing system. (Back door man...)
The gamble? Tix - 45EUR / game. Total $405 Euros
Uruguay win, we lost 40EUR of the total and the rest was refunded.
Oz win and we were in heaven. Lotta envious looks I can tell ya after Alomissi's Pen.
    Best bet I ever made....

    Doco was good.

Shame Neill or Kewell weren't part of it (am sure they were asked).

Thought Recoba was impressive the way he spoke.

Man, he was a super player.
