League/Rugby doesn't rely on the pitch being in optimal condition for the game to function, Football does.
It's just that there are more teams in those codes to use the ground more often, so even with lower attendances the value is better.
The game was played on shithouse pitches for over one hundred years in Australia. It has only been in the last thirty or so years maybe less that we have seen flat grounds with an even covering of grass on them.

Geez...just watch some 70s English First Division games to see what pitches used to be like.

And players become overpaid and overprotected pussies - such is the modern world of football.

Watch the 1970 FA Cup Final and Replay for a reality check - poor surface, long ball and extreme violence.

    I miss it - *sniff*

Agreed. Messi and C. Ronaldo would have shit themselves if they faced what Pele, Di Stefano, or Puskas had to back when yellow cards didn't exist. Sure you could get sent off but you'd practically have to kill someone back then to even get a caution.

And you never see any of the current players have a ciggy on the bench let alone at half time anymore ? Far too soft for my liking.

And imagine Ronaldo taking on Gentile in 1982 when Maradona was "the human pinball".

Absolutely. He would have owned Ronaldo. Too smart and too tough. Probably the greatest defender of all time - or top five at least.

Judging by the history of drug use with the local Drugby League team I would say it a very prevalent thing for Newy

maybe go read up on the West Coast Eagles AFL team from the '90s.

They made the Knights look like amateurs.
