SBS understands that it is no longer going to be able to compete with other media outlets for the rights to big sporting events without raising the ire of taxpayers.
FFS the ABC and SBS were in a ****ing bidding war over the Asian cup games? Why are 2 taxpayer funded stations competing (and driving the price up) for the same thing?
SBS isn't a sports station, was never designed to be, but took advantage of the lack of focus from commercial TV on soccer.
It no longer has that advantage, the popularity of the national team/a-league/overseas leagues means that everyone wants a go at it.
It is no longer a fringe sport, and that's what we all want yeah? We want our game to become what it should be. Well with that comes the fact that for premium content comes a premium price.
Oz public just has to get used to paying for thier big events.
Rightly or wrongly that's how the world works now.
