You would have to think that if Boogaard goes around again next year the Jets plan to stick with the back 3 system long term. With 4 decent centre backs on the books, you would think that must be the plan.

Herald on Noah James' chance to show his keeping claims
    JUNE 26 2020 - 10:30PM
A-League: Jets Rookie gets chance to prove he's a keeper
    James Gardiner

NOAH James has represented Australia at youth level and has been earning his stripes behind the senior goalkeepers at the Jets for the past three seasons.

Now the 19-year-old scholarship player is a chance to make his A-League debut.

James has moved up the pecking order after the departure of veteran shotstopper Glen Moss. Lewis Italiano will start in goals, with James next in line.

Moss had planned to retire at the end of the season.

However, the COVID-19 enforced interruption to the campaign has brought the former Kiwi international's end forward.

He and his family have moved to Sydney in readiness for the next chapter of his career as goalkeeper coach at new A-League franchise Macarthur Rams.

Rather than sign a back-up keeper for the Jets' four remaining game plus potentially finals, James will get his chance.

The talented shot-stopper, who was sidelined for three months with a hand injury earlier this year, has sat on the bench previously but it has only ever been for one or two weeks.

"We won't be bringing in another keeper," Jets chief executive Lawrie McKinna said. "Lewis had been in great form before the league was suspended. We also wanted to give Noah an opportunity. We all know the potential that Noah has. It is a great chance. All of a sudden he is sitting on the bench for the next four games and he might get an opportunity."

McKinna coached James in the Jets youth team and said he has all the ingredients to be a top gloveman.

"He just needs to play games," McKinna said. "With games comes confidence on when to come out for crosses and things like that. Playing against men [in the A-League], you've got less time to make decisions. He came on last season in the preseason and played a few games. Even two years ago in Spain [on a pre-season tour], he played in a couple of games.

"It is up to him now. Mossy and Lewis put pressure on each other. Now it's up to Noah to put pressure on Lewis."

The Jets resume their campaign away to Sydney FC on July 21. They back up three days later against Central coast (July 24) before back-to-back home games against Western United (August 3) and Wellington Phoenix (August 11).

As well as Moss, foreigners Wes Hoolahan and Bobby Burns, who was on loan from Scottish club Hearts, have returned to Ireland will not complete the season. Kaine Sheppard has his contract mutually terminated.

"We have five youth team players training with the senior squad," McKinna said. IWe are going to look at bringing in a couple of players to have a look at for next season, possibly from an NPL club or the youth team."

Former Welsh international Joe Ledley was to leave Cardiff on Friday en route to Newcastle and will have to spend 14 days in quarantine.

Ledley on way back to Aus
    JUNE 26 2020 - 7:30AM
Jet-setting Joe Ledley packs bags for return flight
    ROBERT DILLON

WELSH inernational midfielder Joe Ledley will be back to bolster the Newcastle Jets for the final four games of their A-League campaign, but Irish playmaker Wes Hoolahan will delay any return until the start of next season.

Ledley and Hoolahan, the former English Premier League veterans who have appeared in a combined tally of eight games for Newcastle, both returned to the United Kingdom during the A-League's coronavirus shutdown.

Players at all clubs have now resumed training in preparation for the competition re-start on July 18.

Jets officials were hoping Ledley would board a flight out of the Old Dart on Friday, and the 33-year-old will spend two weeks in hotel quarantine before he is able to rejoin his Newcastle teammates.

Hoolahan, whose wife is expecting their third child in October, has decided to stay in Ireland for the birth but has indicated a desire to return to Newcastle next season, at the age of 38.

Having spent much of his time with the Jets on the sidelines after surgery to repair a pre-season ankle injury, Hoolahan feels he has unfinished business and the club believe his experience and class will be an asset.

Jets chief executive Lawrie McKinna said Hoolahan was "keen" on going around again next season and the feeling was mutual.

Like Hoolahan, Ledley, who played alongside Newcastle coach Carl Robinson for Wales, is a free agent at the end of this season.

But his decision to return for the last four games of 2019-20 - plus the finals, should Newcastle qualify - suggests he is hoping to extend his tenure.

"It will be up to Carl and Joe to work out," McKinna said. "But Joe's got great experience - he's played 70-odd games for Wales, scored goals in the [European] Champions League - and that last game he played for us when we beat Melbourne City at home, he did very, very well.

"I think he really liked it out here before the league was shut down, and if he's interested in coming back, we're certainly interested."

Meanwhile, McKinna was awaiting confirmation of how many spectators would be allowed to attend Newcastle's remaining home games, against Western United (August 3) and Wellington (August 11).

The Newcastle Knights have been cleared to host 8000 fans when they return to McDonald Jones Stadium for their clash with Parramatta on July 12.

"It's still being worked out, but we're hoping it will be in line with the Knights' crowd," McKinna said.

It's Michael Neill. Now plays LB for Sydney United 58.

So we've increased our Sauce Bottle numbers and NPL level players numbers at the same time.

    Quality move Lawrie.

This is by far our worst signing in recent memory, no squad type left backs locally??

None of it adds up with respect to Michael Neil. He's had every chance to prove himself and couldn't get a run at the mariners in a team that was full of state league standard players.
The notion that he's all of a sudden come good and nobody else noticed just doesn't make sense.

James Virgili must be phoning the Jets as we speak.

Signed for four games as a cheap backup, probably cost a meat tray, O'Toole will finish the season.

    Who cares?
