admitedly we at christmas time, so wasnt exactly off peak, but a WC will drive uup demand into the continent.
Flights in sth America arent cheap either as there is essestially only one decent (and safe) airline - LAN Chile.

Id be genuinely suprised if you can get to STh America for a world cup, and then fly internally on the continent for 4K

but that was 5 years ago.
I work in the Flights Department for a well known international wholesale travel company, so apart from knowing a few tricks of the trade I'll also be getting the flights at nett cost.

PROTIP: Internal flights in South America are very expensive on their own, however if purchasing an international ticket (which we all obviously will), you can purchase the internals on an "air pass" and get them very very cheap.

what's the itinerary on said numbers
This is the spiel from the guy organising it:

Greetings fellow World Cup junkies! This will be my 4th World Cup, hopefully 3rd following the Socceroos around, and I know I speak for all the guys and girls who have come on our tours previously, that the World Cup is by far the biggest party on the planet! We’ve danced with the Japanese in Kaiserslautern, sung at the Brazilians in Munich, cursed the Italians, been in awe of the Germans on the beaches of Durban, sworn at Referees, partied with the Serbs and much much more. As well as seeing some of the great countries that have hosted the event.
Brazil is the home of football, so we can’t wait for you to join us on our next adventure.
We have secured two island paradise bases, where we are going to set up camp and enjoy a safe local environment enjoying the sun and sand that Brazil is famous for. One is about 2 hours south of Rio de Janeiro, the other is just outside of Salvador in the north. Both these cities have great flying access to the other cities of Brazil.
As you know, we can’t confirm the full itinerary until the draw is made in December 2013, but what we can do is give you a taste of what to expect. This is obviously a budget camping tour, and this time we do ask you to bring your own tent as well. What’s nice is we only anticipate moving camp two or three times, so once set up, you won’t have much to worry about

    What’s included:
    • 20 nights camping in awesome island destination, campsite and surrounding town includes plenty of bars, big screens, English commentary, beaches, etc (need to bring your own tent/mat)
    • 20 breakfasts, which given the warm weather will usually be made up of local produce like fruit, cereals. We will do cooked breakfasts on some mornings when we have time
    • All transport (excluding flights), such as coach transport to/from Rio de Janiero, Sao Paulo (should we draw a game there) and Salvador. Coach transport within cities for other matches where we have to fly there. Ferry crossings where appropriate.
    • City tours of Rio and Salvador, including all the major sights (entries included) and a local guide fluent in English
    • Two special boat cruise days, one from our Northern Island and one from our Southern Island. These will include all food and drinks.
    • 3 special highlight dinners in local restaurants to be confirmed depending on the draw.
    • A local Brazilian tour guide who will escort us throughout, and be our local knowledge expert.

    What’s NOT included:
    • Tickets to matches (available at www.fifa.com)
    • All flights. Once draw happens you will need to finalise these. But tour will start in Rio on June 11th and finish in Rio on July 1. We will need to fly to/from games that are in cities that aren’t close. Brazil is a massive country, so sometimes we may be required to do an ‘all nighter!’ after the game and fly back next day. Hotel accommodation in this case is at your own expense (if you want it!)
    • Brazilian visas (need to get these before you go)
    • Vaccinations, need to check with your doctor or clinic
    • Meals where not indicated in the itinerary
    • Optional tours which we will offer from time to time, like scuba diving, fishing trips, etc. A list of these will be provided after the draw.
    • You can extend your trip and stay at the World Cup, our campsites will be available after the round of 16 which is when we officially finish the tour.

We're going… thinking of flying into Chile mid-May and having a look around Chile & Argentina beforehand and then Peru afterwards - 2 months all up.

My research has indicated flights to Brazil to be approx. 4k return. Anything less and consider it a bonus. The extortion has been going on for hotels already so expect it to continue when airfares come out in a month or so's time.

I am expecting to even have to take an obscure route there and not just take the logical solution over the Pacific Ocean.

I will be looking at even going Emirates to UAE and then across Africa and Atlantic Ocean to Brazil. Or even to South Africa and then across the Atlantic.

Not expecting the simple option to be the one I will have to take

Tickets for next year's World Cup in Brazil will be "cheapest ever", football's governing body Fifa says.

Fifa Secretary-General Jerome Valcke said 70% of the matches would cost less than in previous events; ticket prices will be announced on 19 July.

Mr Valcke and Fifa President Sepp Blatter praised the Confederations Cup in Brazil which ended on Sunday.

The tournament was marked by protests against the high cost of the World Cup, corruption and poor public services.

Mr Blatter said the Confederations Cup was a success despite the demonstrations which took millions to the streets.

"I am happy we come to a conclusion now with a sporting result and the impression that the social unrest is now resting - I don't know how long for," he told reporters in Rio de Janeiro on Monday.
    'Some uncertainty'

The head of Fifa also admitted there had been fears that Brazil would not be ready for the World Cup in 2014.

Building work at some stadiums was finished shortly before the start of the Confederations Cup and there were doubts about how the country's infra-structure would cope with a large scale event.

"When we started the competition there was some uncertainty what would happen," Mr Blatter said.

Fifa officials avoided commenting on security issues, saying they were a matter for the government to deal with.

During the Confederations Cup there have been several clashes between protesters and security forces, who fired rubber bullets, pepper spray and tear gas into the crowds.

There were reports that the public was affected by the gas inside the stadiums, including Rio's Maracana, where Brazil beat Spain 3-0 in Sunday's final.

Fifa was one of the targets of protesters, who complained that football's governing body gained profits exempt from tax and that high investments of public funds in the preparation for the international football events would have been better used for hospitals or schools.

Believe that when I see it

Haven't been beaten at home since I think 1975 in a competitive game. Only takes 1 bad day though and they are out. To me it is pretty open

As for the prior discussion of Internal flights in Brazil

Tam and Gol both do air passes. Both have to be booked after an International Flight. Both require this ticket number. Both also require you to book all flights/dates/times etc at once

    http://www.tam.com.br/b2c/vgn/v/inde...005f05a8c0RCRD

    http://www.brol.com/air%20passes/?gc...FQRcpQodN3gA5A

Probably gonna need to wait until the actual draw is done before booking one. But can make some good savings with this

I work at a local Travel Agent and was myself looking at travelling next year but have decided not to. I also have an interest in the ZPL3 competition and have been reading this thread out of interest to see what everyone was thinking and doing about the travel next year.

The flights I was looking at were with Swiss and/or Lufthansa and the airlines they partner with. It does mean that you would have to travel through Europe to get there or come home. The fares are basically a round world fare, although you will need to purchase a one-way flight between Santiago and Rio (either way).

As an example of the route you could take and airlines that can be used, if you chose the Swiss Air option you could fly Sydney to Dubai on Qantas. Dubai to Zurich on Swiss. Zurich to Rio on Swiss (via Sao Paulo). Santiago to Sydney on Qantas. The bonus with this fare is the fact that you are allowed a return flight form Zurich to basically anywhere in Europe, which breaks the flight up a little.

If you chose to fly Lufthansa the itinerary would look pretty similar but your main stop in Europe would be Frankfurt or Munich.

I thought that this information would help a few people and give you guys some more options. These fares aren't generally used at a lot of agencies.

If you want some more info let me know and I can give you some contact details.

What's the dollars on a around the world ticket like this roughly going to cost?

The fares are year round fares and start at about AUD1600-1800 plus taxes. Round it up to about AUD3000.00 (Taxes will vary depending on the airports you fly in and out of)

Obviously this is subject to availability to the correct booking classes being available on each of the flights.

The way I looked at it was going to Brazil via Europe for two reasons 1) I am assuming that there will be a larger amount of seats form say Zurich to Rio as European qualifiers are not completed and we can book flights in a couple of weeks time and 2) I think it will be cheaper and easier to fly out of Rio on a one way fare then it would be into Rio.

I thought about doing an LX or LH round the world, but have decided to just do return flights with LA. I've got my outbound SYD-SCL sorted but SCL-GIG is going to be the hard part. Have only been able to secure Y class at this stage, which is about $1400 plus taxes. I'm hoping more availability gets released (I'm pretty sure it will) so I can at least ticket it on an air pass for a couple of hundred bucks.

All going well the flights should only cost me a bit over $2000 including tax, but have to add on the internals depending on the draw. Fingers crossed!
