might as well throw in my 2 bobs' worth.

got a lenovo t series laptop (i5 with beefed up ram etc.) about 18 months ago and have had no issues with it . ordering system is similar to dell but at the time i could get what i wanted a bit cheaper with lenovo. t series is their standard/middle of the road series, some people at uni have the cheaper ones and they do look/feel more flimsy.

don't have a tablet but from what i've seen/used i would go with a samsung i think. i don't like the whole apple "ecosystem" and also think macbooks are a bit of a ripoff, and windows 8 seems to have negative reviews all round.

personally I am looking at the Clevo range from LogicalBlueOne. Basically the same parts you get in the mainstream ranges (ie Sony, Dell, etc) without having to pay the premium for the name.

Love how everyone thinks any new Windows such as this time Windows 8 is a nightmare. Yet seems to forget that in 12-24 months when the bugs are ironed out /or people have adequate equipment for it it will run alright.

Could never understand the furore over Vista. Vista was built for 64 bit systems. Nearly every dick on the planet tried jamming it on a 32bit system and then wondered why it wasn't good. Built a 64 bit system for Vista and as soon as Vista SP1 came out it ran sweet

My problem with windows 8 is I get windows popping up randomly all over the place all the time and I have trouble finding my way back. Absolute hate it.

Windows 8 is for kids to play with on their smartphone, it's the worst Windows in history if you actually want to do some work. Classic shell will give it a more Win7 look

Haha this asshole (the HN guy not you)

Tried to pull it with me and openly argued with me as to which tablets do and don't have Foxtel Go (Q is right, one Samsung model does and so do iPads but that's it).

The only thing Apple / Mac do well is promote their 4th rate woeful products. Phones are junk, music devices - junk - inability to run databases such as Access natively - Disgrace, and they are about one tenth the speed of an intel at similar clock speed if yer lucky running Mathematica.

I also don't buy the better for music crap either. Plenty of good programs such as Sonar do it just as good for a lot less money.

I'm not against young girls having their own brand of computer or phone but lets not pretend apple make products for men. Because they don't.

Made by Intel. You could get a PC with the same power running natively for a lot less.

yeah but it's a lot of dickin' around, plus half of our stuff runs on OSX and the other half on windows - parallels is the answer and it works out of the box.

Acer Aspire V3 571G fanboi here too - running Windoze 8 SP1 with i7 core. Also recommend Classic Shell to bypass that apps shit.

Great laptop - only downer is the battery could last a bit longer.

Got a tablet to show PDFs to clients and just general surf whilst lounging around - I'm "anything but Apple" and went for a Chinese Android. Apart from getting around the Chinese hyraglyphics it is taking everything I throw at it, including streamed media from my home server.

So much easier to discretely w*** with a tablet btw.

How long ago did you get it??

I bought mine about January last year and at the shop had the option of getting it with either Windows 7 or Windows 8

I took the Windows 7 option as I thought it would be more stable.

Just wondering what it would have been like if I went the other option and went Windows 8???

what's good for the computer dork out there isn't always good for the high-end user who is not au fait with the building of systems from scratch (i.e. biologists, clinicians, anyone who is not an engineer (or economist, obviously) )

the mac pro is popular because it works out of the box, and you don't have to put it together yourself

given the choice between ****ing around building a system, or knowing i can get one that does the job with a minimal amount of fuss, most people with a bit of wedge to spend will opt for the mac.

but horses for courses - dunster's machine is probably useless for what i'd want to do and vice versa, and mine would probably send him into apoplectic rage
