Loving this mornings drama!
Compare this to qualifying for the eggball World Cup!
:rof:
I can see 2001 happening all over again although legs are swapped.
We're gonna get more screwed 1st leg 3-0 then come home and
maybe not lose but not go through.
Difference is the class of 2001 were class and actually grew form that
experience in Montevideo. Most of this lot couldn't give a flying f***.
I was actually quite satiated football wise with this qualification phase
with witnessing Timmy's 50th goal in the flesh last night. Had that free kick gone
in I wouldn't have left that disappointed.
Russian bars will be devastated with no USA or Oz there....

Crossbar keepers head and into the net
Lol
Is that falcon an oggie? Clanger!
Get used to those crown scenes. Looks worse than Montevideo
and is from what I've heard. They don't play in the capital but in
San Pedro Sula - out in the boondocks.
A few quick facts:-
San Pedro Sula is a city in the Sula Valley of northern Honduras. It’s known as one of the country’s main transport hubs.
The San Pedro Sula Anthropology and History Museum has exhibits on the region’s past, from pre-Columbian times to the present.
To the west, in the Merendón mountains, Cusuco National Park has trails through cloud forest rich in wildlife,
including many species of bats and the rare quetzal bird.

A few quick facts:-
Montevideo is a shit tip but it ain't that bad a place safety wise
What happened in 2001 was our stupidity going out the front door of the airport and getting harassed by the local yobbos etc
In hindsight we should have stayed in Buenos Aires and jetted in the day before the game or took a ferry over
That was just Soccer Australia being naive dumb ****s
The Uruguayans although passionate about football ain't exactly violent aggressive ****s
This place we going though is a going to be interesting but we.at least not as ****ing naive as we were in the past
Statement released by FFA and Ange
No denial on him going in the future
Reading between the lines he gone
He saying he focused on the Honduras games and qualifying for a WC
Acknowledged the rumours but does **** all to dispell them
Pretty poor media management creating a distraction like this etc

Looks like a fun place
"San Pedro Sula was the "murder capital of the world"until early 2016 when Caracas, Venezuela surpassed its homicide rate.[11] Since the 2009 Honduran military coup "unemployment and underemployment rates have doubled while the number of people living in extreme poverty has skyrocketed."[4] In 2013, the city had 187 homicides per 100,000 residents.[12] This surpassed Ciudad Juarez, Mexico's rate of 148 killings per 100,000, or an average of about three homicides per day;[9] Ciudad Juarez had previously topped the list for three consecutive years.[13][14] Both cities are major operational and strategic distribution points in the illegal drug trade, particularly to the United States, and have significant gang activity.[7][13][15][16] In response, authorities launched Operation Lightning, saturating violence hotspots with police and soldiers.[9] Meanwhile, arms trafficking has flooded the country, with just under 70% of all firearms being illegal. 83% of homicides in the city involve firearms.[8]
According to the Los Angeles Times, "the homicide rate is stoked by the rivalry of the brutal street gangs, mostly descendants of gangs formed in Los Angeles and deported to Central America in the 1990s, including Mara Salvatrucha (MS) and the 18th Street gang. Their ranks are fed by the disastrous economy of Honduras, and emboldened more recently by alliances with Mexican drug traffickers moving cocaine through the country."[4]
Crime and economic stress have led to the migration of large numbers of unaccompanied minors to the US border. The latest data from the CBP shows San Pedro Sula as the major source for Unaccompanied Alien Children (UAC) migrating from Honduras."

When do tickets to this atrocity go on sale?
This shit with Ange
Any chance it just a media beat up engineered on purpose
Until these ****s confirm 100% he coaching elsewhere come mid November he has actually managed to drag the focus off the players ineptness and has actually insulated them from the pressure of the big occasion coming there way in November
This just too convenient to be playing out this way if it not done on purpose
At the moment the entire focus is on Ange Postecoglou and the players are off scot free
As for any argument that Ange's future may be distracting the players. They playing for a trip to a World Cup I pretty certain they be able to focus on the task at hand v Honduras when it roles around
This just smells like a cooked up story that done to keep the siege mentality going

Well, If we qualify he can say he qualified us through 2 playoffs. I’d give him the World Cup to see out his tenure if I was a neutral.
If he doesn’t qualify he resigns and that’s that.

Anyone see the interview with Ange and Peadick yesterday??
30 odd mins at a football function
Ange is more or less happy and relaxed about the speculation about his future
Just listening to him talking about the Honduras game and things he don't sound like he going to walk if we win in November
It almost seemed like Ange was quite happy for the bullshit shit storm of media about him to continue for a month like it was actually organised
Not only that for a bloke who is under the pump in the media etc he didn't seem too fussed and seemed remarkably relaxed and self assured
I was interested in his body language etc and I think he feels quite confident of getting the job done in November

I don't buy that his scripted response is anything but damage control.
You correctly point out I don't know the context fully, but I can't be bothered so I'll plead ignorance
For the record, I don't care what he does with his career, go off somewhere, earn squillions.
I think he hitched his horse to the wrong wagon (3 at the back and playing absolutely boring, trying-not-to-lose football) but I guess there's honour in going down with the ship, rather than mending the leak?
Damage Control??
The bloke hasn't given a flying **** about the speculation for over a week
Even now he couldn't really give a **** about it
Don't forget this is still a rumour and not a fact alleged by a journo
The bloke concerned hasn't given two ****s about the rumour damaging his teams qualification campaign, the FFA have also barely given a flying **** about it costing us a WC spot which is bizarre as they hitch the code onto the back of WC Qualification the only thing they have done was offer a press release acknowledging the rumour and none of the Socceroos players have been seen in the media talking about the situation at all
Other than two bit media pundits and social media fans blowing up this rumour to epic proportions this story isn't going anywhere

It a 3rd world country in a tropical area it pretty much the norm for anyone travelling
Same thing was in effect in Brazil for the WC
There you even had to get Yellow Fever shots as they won't let you back into Australia without them
Plus most of that stuff is the usual scare mongering to tourists that goes on to any exotic destination
I would feel safer in Honduras than I would in the UK or USA to be fair . Besides the T word being an issue the gun nuts and other wack jobs in the UK and USA are a bigger threat than some 3rd world street urchin

I spent a few days in Honduras after the 2014 World Cup, can't say I even felt unsafe when I was there but this was mainly in the "touristy" parts (Copan, Roatan Island).
Probably went through San Pedro Sula on the drive from Copan to the Atlantic Coast to catch the ferry out to Roatan. Even on that drive I can't remember anything too sketchy. However, the tour I was on did fly from Roatan to Tegucigalpa as there had been a few hijackings/murders on a particular stretch of road between the two...

I like this because it forces Ange's hand to hopefully try an 'unknown'. Someone like Goodwin in the mix might be an X Factor that Honduras won't have a clue about or have done their homework on.
Then again..it's Ange the sauce bottle we're talking about.
Jedinak got through 30 mins overnight in the Brummie twats derby
Give Ange an option for the away leg in Honduras with Milligan suspended if he can keep it up
Good news
Timmy is on the plane to Honduras
Even better news is that Robbie Kruse won't be on the plane due to injury but is coming to Sydney

Very soft penalty if given but the restart didn’t match the decision. They didn’t take it from the 6yd box did they?
With kickoff, I think the only change to the rule was that you could pass the ball in any direction and the kicktaker can now be in the opposition half.

I don’t really buy into the Ange stuff. I think he has just taken one for the team to allow the players to focus on the job at hand. His future is probabaly gonna be decided on The outcome of the campaign. If we qualify, he’s done the job. If not, he has failed, see ya later. I think he’s just taken the spotlight to free up the players.
On formation. I think most people will say the issue was not with 3 or 4 or 5 at the back. It was about selection of players that didn’t really suit what we were trying to do. It’s usually put out the favorites and hope they do good.
Our back 3 on Saturday were well supported with defensively minded wingbacks in Risdon and Behich. They were measured in their approach. Whereas usually we have Leckie/Kruse being relied upon in defence.
This team also had Jedinak who despite his fitness concerns, is pretty much a deep DM. And the industrious Irvine forever running and getting stuck in, with Luongo and Mooy in there throwing themselves around.
It’s a team of players that will work hard and get a job done and win those 50/50 balls.
With Kruse/Leckie we instantly have 2 passengers on the fringes when things get a bit gritty.
Personally, I think our performance was due to selection. I’d like to see us set up in a similar way, with maybe Milligan in for Jedinak and I wouldn’t be opposed to the work ethic of Cahill to go hard for 60. Or the last 30.
We need a decent striker quickly. It’s probably something we majorly lack.
Every team we play seems to have a prolific striker, or a player that is just so so dangerous on the counter that makes watching our defence play possession very nerve racking. Juric should be plopping those 1 on 1s all game long. And we should not be relying on an ageing Tim Cahill to provide mongrel.
dunno 'bout you blokes but im going to Zambos for lunch today.

After watching the post match press conference last night I’m becomming more and more convinced he’ll coach them at the World Cup and do so with double middle fingers to everyone along the way.
I want him to stand on the sidelines in thongs and boardies, smoking a ciggy.
I want him to put Langerak up front for the final 10 mins of a game, and yell all his instructions in Greek to his confused players who have no idea what he’s saying.
Make it so Ange.

Agree on Sainsbury, bloke is a good defender and looks better on the ball than most of our team and can pick a pass.
Also agree with JM, we hardly looked like scoring until the deflected free kick. First pen was lucky, second pen you can say we deserved as we did create a 1 on 1 which they were not able to legally defend.
Hondurans were up for the game and played decently. How their #6 didn't get a yellow after something like 8 fouls conceded, most of which were on Rogic stopping a promising attacking situation baffles me. We were getting yellows (some deserved) for some soft shit but it seemed like they had open season on our blokes to stop any attack without penalty from the ref. Besides that he had a decent game.
Rogic actually looked talented last night (in contrast to most of his performances I've seen where I'm left wondering why there is even hype on the bloke). Still needs to work on the final pass and shot but he did well carrying the ball forward and creating a yard for himself.
I had to laugh a bit when Simon Hill asked how much of an impact we can make at the World Cup. In 2014 I thought we acquitted ourselves very well in a tough group and probably deserved to make it out. If we come at all close to those levels of performance I'll be both surprised and happy. Prove me wrong Ange

Disagree
It about getting there and the journey you take to get there developing your squad etc
I will take our preparation we have had over the likes our 2010 side had where they qualified in a canter and were not pushed to earn it
When we got there they thought they would just roll on where they left off in Germany 06 but the German NT was a massive step up from the Asian sides we had rolled
I actually think we will do quite well in Russia
This side may be cumbersome and excruciating at taking chances etc but
They are hard to beat and are not riding their luck to scrape in
Just takes us longer to get the dominance reflected on the scoreboard than we would like

I think when we get better quality opposition we will benefit
Every nation we have faced in qualifying has parked the bus against us and made us have to play through them
Given better quality opposition who also are going to want the ball and dominate the game more they are going to open up a bit more space for us
I think we will be fine and more than competitive in our group and with some luck sneak out into the knock outs

Easy. Rule got changed in the last year or two so that for the denying obvious goal scoring chance (aka last man etc), you no longer award a red card and a penalty for the same offence. So if its outside the box and a free kick, still a red. If its a pen then only yellow. Reasoning is that a red card and a pen for one incident is too heavy a punishment given that the penalty is a high chance of a goal. It can still be a red if the foul would have been a red elsewhere on the pitch, so for excessive force or whatever the proper terms are.
Given better quality opposition who also are going to want the ball and dominate the game more they are going to open up a bit more space for us
I wondered this during the Syria game actually and you're probably right. We're not really good enough to be Man City or Barcelona and break down anything in front of us. But blokes like Leckie, Rogic, Mooy, Kruse do ok at club level because they're not facing parked buses, they don't play for "big" clubs (maybe Rogic excepted in the Scottish league). Our pace on the wings will become a more valuable asset, so we may actually look better with less ball.

I disagree with your interpretation of the new rule change. The way I understand it:
- Deny an Obvious Goal Scoring Opportunity (they even abbreviate it to: DOGSO) outside of the box = red card and freekick.
- DOGSO inside the box, but making a "genuine attempt" to play the ball = yellow card and penalty.
- DOGSO inside the box, but NOT making a "genuine attempt" to play the ball = red card and penalty.
The only way to explain the Robbie Kruse penalty being awarded a yellow last night is the ref believed the defender made a genuine attempt to play the ball.

Our most potent attacking weapon across the two legs was the left back which tells you all you need to know about how poor we are.
The midfield set up last night was horrible and people falling over themselves to praise the captain for being a 4th fullback against a team spraying long balls then ok.
We don’t have any strikers in the squad who can beat a player one on one, and no one in the front half of the field has any composure in front of goal.
This team will suck in Russia and no doubt it will be the group opponents/injuries/global warming to blame.
The only true team playing football at the moment is the Jets yet you all wanna cheer for Gypos.

As for the Kruse foul no red card
Forget the aspects of the last man penalty double whammy send off etc
How was he not sent for a tackle from behind??
How was he not sent for common assault??
As it wasn't exactly anything much short of violence on the pitch rather than genuine attempt at playing the game going wrong

Glad we qualified but we aint troubling anyone in Russia. This system is ****ed. Stack the midfield to create chances for good football, Only create crossing chances, Have no one that can cross. Playing Cahil upfront gives us no movement and leaves Mooy and Rogic with no one to play balls through for.
Leckie at RWB WTF Ange, Bloke is scoring goals and whatnot playing on the wing in germany and you play him as a RB. We saw how this system goes against WC level opposition at the Confeds Cup. Germany and Cameroon shouldve beat us by 5 goals both games and Chile for what ever reason were off their game allowing us to play.

Personally I just don't think Portugal are very good, I thought their Euro win was pretty lucky and if that same tournament was played again another 10 times I don't think they'd win it. Yeah there CB andreas christensen who would destroy our Strikers easy. We do not want denmark
The funny thing Stanny, is that you probably believe their 3rd choice CB is their best player just because he played for Monchengladbach for a few years. We get it, you love Monchengladbach... You don't have to bring them up all the time.
Bendtner is actually catching up on Michael Laudrup on the goal scoring charts, that is genuinely impressive.
A front 3 of Fischer - Lorde Bendtner - Eriksen is pretty solid. Jorgenson and Cornellius off the bench is better than what we have to offer.

So do I....will ride a wave of "Kanemania" and usual media proclamations of "this time we will win it".
And as usual they will implode, sack a coach and see Kane off to Madrid.
World cup mock draw, damn it

The countries that get Russia as their pot 1 team will be cheering.
I’m just looking forward to seeing us play some competitive teams that are skilful opposed to pragmatic and diving and time wasting that we have endured in Asia.
I think we play a hell of a lot better against good teams. And our players are somewhat better suited to counter attacking style. Just want the draw done so I can plan.
Would welcome Portugal. Would love to see Irvine put Ronny on his bum and post a pic about it later.
Brazil and Germany are definite no thankyous.
Would like to avoid Switzerland and Spain. Would have a pretty good shot with an always imploding English team. Or a marketing dream against Uruguay.
Personally don’t want Iceland or Sweden from pot 3 as I’d like to see them separately.
I’d like to avoid pacey strikers.
And I’m chucklinh to myself now thinking about other teams looking at us and thinking Leckie is gonna be very dangerous, especially when they find out his pace is like 93 on fifa.

As long as we don't get Germany yet again and maybe Brazil I'll see it as a challenge.

Wow,
How good with this have been.
So mad that we are going to get bum-touched in the draw and never get to witness the joy of a nil-all draw with Tunisia.
