Think it's called 'I'm on fire' or something. Yes, catchy indeed.
Funny random fact: When I went to the Emirates earlier this year one of the pre-match songs was 'Sweet Surrender' by Temper Trap. Thought that was cool (Aussie band) but weird (surrender? Arsenal? Aren't they tortured enough already?).
Gunners won 7-1 though so crisis averted.

Jets draw with Sydney FC

Sunday, 9 September 2012 3:53 PM

Jets draw with Sydney FC

The Newcastle Jets drew 1-1 with Sydney FC in their pre-season friendly at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets adjusted their shape for the clash, playing with a back three of Scott Neville, Josh Mitchell and Dominik Ritter. This allowed Craig Goodwin to play on the left side of a diamond midfield featuring Jobe Wheelhouse, Ruben Zadkovich and Ben Kantarovski.

Sydney started the stronger of the two teams with Paul Reid and Ali Abbas both getting shots on target which were easily dealt with by Jets shot-stopper Mark Birighitti.

The Jets responded through Wheelhouse who sent a warning shot with a 25-metre volley that sailed over the crossbar.

As the Jets began to do a better job of keeping possession, they were able to fashion a couple of goal scoring opportunities.

Firstly Zadkovich flashed a first-time effort with his left foot wide of the post, before Griffiths headed over the bar under pressure from the Sydney defence.

It wasn’t long though before the Jets found the breakthrough. After Marko Jesic was brought down on the edge of the area, Zadkovich stepped up to expertly dip a free-kick over the wall and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead after 30 minutes.

With their tails up, the Jets almost made it 2-0 a short time later when Goodwin found himself in a goal scoring position.

Scott Neville worked his way into the box before the ball fell to Goodwin who was unable to get his shot on target under pressure from the Sydney defence.

Goodwin, relishing the opportunity to play further up the park, was a constant threat to the Sydney defence. Minutes before half-time, the 20-year-old forced a turnover before squaring the ball to Jesic who has his shot blocked.

The ball fell to Virgili but his follow-up effort was also blocked and the score remained 1-0 at the end of the first 45.

The Jets carried their momentum into the second half and were on the attack early as Sydney were forced to clear a goalmouth scramble.

A short time later, Virgili picked out Goodwin with a cross the to back post, but he was only able to steer the ball into the upright from a tight angle.

Not to be outdone, the Sky Blues had a golden opportunity to draw level minutes later when Mitch Mallia’s cross to the back post picked out Christopher Naumoff whose first time shot was desperately cleared off the line by Josh Mitchell.

However, from the ensuing corner Sydney managed to get back on level terms with Mallia heading home at the back post.

As the match wound to a close, half-time substitute Bernardo Ribeiro began to find more space and time on the ball.

The Brazilian almost put the Jets back in front when he was put through on goal by a lovely lob pass from Ryan Griffiths, but he hit his shot straight at Sydney FC goalkeeper Ivan Necevski.

Ribeiro tested Necevski again with a long range shot from 30 metres out, but Necevski was up to the task, tipping the ball over the crossbar to ensure the match finished 1-1.

Newcastle Jets 1 (Zadkovich 30’)

Sub not used: 20. Vedran Janjetovic.

The report seems to indicate we were the better side on the day.

MFKS
09-09-2012, 07:23 PM
I wouldn't believe the report on the Jets side is a true indicator of how the match panned out and where we are at. They are probably a fraction biased.

Team I follow in Europe got relegated 2 seasons back and done **** all last year to avoid relegation just. Read one of their match reports and you would swear we were Barcelona in full pomp despite getting rolled 4-0.

That's the level of bias you can see in these things

Ribeiro looked ok and showed some good combinations in attack linking with Bridges and Virgili, but I think its too early to tell on him yet.

Ritter had a blinder of a game, this bloke is going to be a beast. Goodwin also carved it up and Neville and Virgili had strong showings. Jobe and Kanta kept the back three protected, Sydney only had maybe two or three forays into the box in the first half.

GVE is ramping it up to be ready for the kickoff so this saturday against WSW should be good, our boys could be in for a strong performance against a team still finding its feet.

The only drawback for this weekends members only event - no away supporters.

And media reports here in sydney seem to think they may switch the closed event against SFC the following weekend at Budgewoi, to Gypo Stadium as this will be Del Pieros first match. Why are the two major rivals of the coasties playing in their backyard ffs? We played one fixture against SFC in Sydney, the second one should be in Newy somewhere.

so the member woke up at around 8, a sleep-in for the members standards. the member had the choice between scrambled eggs or Vegemite on toast, and whilst the eggs would have been grifflicious, the effort required wasn't warranted. etc etc, kale bradberry, griff, tarek, etc

Just to confirm, the Member and I are sweet despite the rocky start to our relationship.
Although I too am getting concerned at his habit of referring to himself in the third person.
Plague finds this disturbing.

Speaking of which how did Tarek Elrich play today?
Also, anyone have any thoughts on the WSW in general?
and how was the crowd?

What the scariest part of that is the Member did get up at 8 am this morning as I felt the need for a sleep in. I was tossing up on having Bacon Eggs for breaky but couldn't be ****ed and stuck to the Sultana Bran. Did see Takka at the game, Kale was spotted running around the ground giving out balloons to kids and by Griff I assume you are talking about the impending Newy no 9 and the Member spent all game thinking we should sign Griff we are shit.

Goal from Neville was a belter. Hit from about 25-30 yards out and never looked like missing the top corner. Absolute waste though and would have been much better saved for training at Ray Watt or games at Shittounge V Gypos and not wasted in pre season hitouts.

Is it just me or does anyone else notice the correlation between the form of Kanta and the sides success going forward??

Kanta played well for the first 20 mins and we went well. After that he was back to his usual self and we played like our usual selves.

Zadkovich was a huge disappointment. Quietest game I think I have ever seen him play. Only tried hacking one bloke. Heart didn't look in it.

Ritter looks a beast though and was quite impressed with him.

Bernardo nice touches but appears to not be blessed with any great speed/acceleration. Couple of times got into good positions but got chased down much too quick.

Did notice in the first 20 mins we seemed to be moving the ball around at speed and with a lot more one touch football than normal. Good idea GVE!! Only problem was after a couple of stray passes were played we seemed to stop the one touch stuff and slowed the tempo down. Let WSW smother us.

Still not convinced about Ryan Griff as our Central Striker. The pre season games I have seen and to me it just don't look right and Griff juniors form hasn't been as high as it could. Do like the idea of GVE playing Griffo in the no 9 role but FFS sign the right one.

Craig Deans was hopeless again

WSW were slow in the first half, but found more of a rhythm in the second. They have a lot of work to do before the season starts, but I don't think they will be easy beats.
For the jets, I was impressed with Ritter and thought that Ribeiro showed promise.

not sure bout Ribeiro...actually just watched him tbh seing if he had the goods...still undecided but think he needs to get his foot on the ball more.ryu is not a striker and zad to me looks more dangerous in a wide role. Mitchell is quality

Why did we only have 3 outfield players on the subs bench for a trial match????
I read last week that Sydney gave Robbie Slater's young son Tom (16 years old) a run last week in the 2nd half against us. Yesterday we had the likes of Bradbery, Hoole and Campbell (all local lads from the Youth team) giving out balloons!!! Yesterday would have been an opportune time to give a couple of these lads who are all about 19, 20 minutes or so against A-League opposition. Bradbery's speed in particular would have been handy when Ryan had to come off and we only had 10 men and Hoole>>>>Oxborough. My optimism about the coming season has gone down a peg or two after yesterdays WSW trial in a few regards.
Agree that Ritter looked good and Bernardo showed some promise.

I think GVE was trying to play the way he would in the A-league. Seeing as he only has 3 outfield players as subs there, he did it here.

I've got a good feeling about Ribeiro... reminds me of Nicky Carle but a step or two quicker. Some of his passes went astray but who's doesn't?? When he gets used to whatever our front line is, the combinations will form and I think he'll be a real important player for us this season.

at least they kind of alternate in colour to their home & away (which clash with each other).

btw i understand the fans said they wanted red/black/white as the colours for wsw, but it doesn't mean they have to force all three colours to be existent for EVERY kit - from looking @ those pics, that kit would look a lot nicer overall with white or black socks.

Jets defeat Mariners 2-1 Wednesday, 19 September 2012 4:16 PM

The Hunter Ports Newcastle Jets defeated the Central Coast Mariners 2-1 in a trial match at Tuggerah on Wednesday afternoon.

Jets head coach Gary van Egmond used the fixture as an opportunity give extra game time to the Jets players who haven’t featured heavily in the Club’s recent trial matches.

The Jets strongly and opened the scoring in the 13th minute courtesy of Brazilian midfielder Bernardo Ribeiro.

Michael Bridges showed some silky skills to beat two defenders on the edge of the area, before squaring the ball across the face of goal. Mitch Cooper was unable to reach it, but the ball spilled out to Ribeiro who comfortably tucked it away.

The Jets continued to control the mainstay of the game and had a chance to go two goals up when a one-two between Marko Jesic and Ribeiro put Jesic through.

Jesic squared the ball to Bridges but his shot was blocked by the body of Mariners goalkeeper Justin Pasfield.

Mitch Cooper doubled the Jets’ lead minutes before the half-time break with Bridges again the provider. The Englishman played in Cooper with a sublime back-heel and the 18-year-old finished expertly into the bottom corner.

Not long after the half-time break, Jacob Pepper had a golden opportunity to make it 3-0 when he forced a turnover and found himself in a one-on-one against Justin Pasfield. Unfortunately for the Jets, Pepper hit his shot straight at the Mariners shot-stopper and the score remained 2-0.

Both sides gave the opportunity for a number of their National Youth League trialists to be tested in the second half, changing the flow of the game.

The Mariners were able to cut the Jets’ lead in half in the 74th minute after Aaron Peterson capitalised on a mistake at the back by the Jets to make it 2-1.

That was the way it stayed in what was a good hit-out for both squads.

Newcastle Jets 2 (Ribeiro 13’, Cooper 40’)
Central Coast Mariners 1 (Peterson 74’)
