do we have many game of thrones fans on here?

season 4 was pretty great. it's hard to see where things will go from here with so many seemingly key characters being killed off.

Just started watching last night as I can't stand having to wait between episodes, really wish I'd read the books before I'd seen this series as it would have been great to follow the world in depth however watching the show is great at the same time as you just can't guess what will come next. The George R.R. Martin parodies on the interwebs are hilarious too.

Yeah I have just finished watching the latest season..
One of those shows that I didnt start watching until about a year ago, kept avoiding it cause of all the wankery that accompanied the show (as in all the pricks non stop talking about how great it is, spoilers, etc etc)
Pretty amazing show, definitely need to read the books..

The Show is deviating away from the books quite a lot now. the main outline is still there but they're changing a lot of the story to suit their own ends. I got sick of it and stopped watch around season 3 ep 4.

I think by reading the books I wanted a direct copy of what was written and they've just not felt obliged to do as I want (****ers). I think you'll enjoy it more by not having read the books first otherwise you'll be sitting where I am going Where the **** is that character, or why did they cut out that, why is that character even talking to that character.

Just got Arrow season 1 though, interested to see if it's any good. there's a lot of hype around it and talk of integrating it with the Justice League Movie (2017?) or at least mention of Green Arrow in BVS:ROJ but wouldn't be surprised if he made a cameo with Batman, Superman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman already cast.

Fargo is still the best show on at the moment.

Interesting that GoT seems to have gone the opposite way to The Walking Dead, which took an entire season to bring itself back inline with the comics storylines.

Arrow is awesome I'm up to date with it and I'm fairly confident it will integrate with the Justice League movie. It starts off slow but it's worth the wait.

I'm looking forward to the new Flash starting.

May have spoilers but if you havent watched you wouldnt know what im talking about anyway.
I got dragged kicking and screaming into it
(im not a fan of movies/tv set in the forest with magic and shit).
gotta say though, its pretty darn good. thought the season finale was pretty cramped though. got through a heap of storylines in such a short space of time.
things i like:
Hound
Big chick who punched on with hound
the alcho queen chick
giants
moon door

things i dont like:
the dude with no penis
the dude who cut the dudes penis off
dragon lady (clothed)
the cripple kid
the shady bloke (littlefinger?) who was the mayor in the wire and in the batman movie. terrible actor, drives me insane. possible pedophile though (but i think thats what they all did back in the day).

will watch the next season for sure

You say this as if it's a redeeming quality.

I think he's brilliant. Some of his key powerplay moments have been the best of the show (think back to towards the end of season 1).

Yeah yeah, character is good, slimey bastard.
Plus you gotta admit the oldest Stark daughter looked pretty hot last time we saw her (boobs!!!).
Just think he's a bad actor. As mentioned, I'm scarred from his performance in The Wire.

Started watching Arrow, quite good, the action sequences are good, the slow build to the back story (what happened on the Island) is annoying, but hoping for a full run down soon.
They have the soap to action mash up down pat to keep both the male and female viewers interested. There is still a little campness to it though with how some of the events are unfolding and some serious storyline issues in regards to character relatability but over all a show I'm willing to stick with after 3 episodes.

Shows that didn't make the mark:
Prison Break
Blacklist
Revenge

I'd put Game of thrones on their but I persisted into season 2 before giving up.

Arrow real is awesome the Island back story takes time but it really needs to without going to much into it for spoiler sack much of the current links to the Island.
As I've said before it starts of slow but really does get interesting and addictive. Also helps if you're a comic nerd like me.

Yeah, massive comic Nerd, really digging most of the newly rebooted DC stuff too. recently picked up Frank Millers Batman Origins, Earth One Superman Year One, and the parallel Red Son (what if Superman landed in Communist Russia?)

I'm up to ep 8 I think, and I've found it to be quite entertaining all over, even my wife seems to some what like it even though she likes to take the piss more often than not. I've looked around and got a bit of Spoiler info on it as like all Comic Nerds it's the Anti Heroes we love and Deathstroke is one of the best. Can't wait to get into Season 2 for that and the back story of the Island with Deathstroke complete.

I didn't really enjoy the first episode of S4. Hope it improves.

I quite like Falling Skies, Season 1 was pretty hard to get into with its America the great ideals, season 2 was solid and season 3 kept the momentum going. Season 4 just seems a bit odd, there was too much crammed into the first ep setting up the different plot lines, with the Joy division, peaceful plaza, prison camp and Resistance, not to mention the fact that the Volm apparently abandoned the war on Earth and now Cocheez is back but also apparently a prisoner to the espengee doing their bidding I just think that a longer season order and this ep split into 2-4 eps to allow for a more natural feel to the storyline. The Special effects are still hands down the best in any show going at the moment though.
Those Mechs are awesome.

Things that I'm have dug recently: Fargo, best show I've seen in a long time, Arrow, a little bit soap opera-ish but great action and a cool take on a little known DC superhero. Like Batman but more vengeance than symbol, Always Community, Fringe is the bomb for Sci-Fi TV 100 Eps of awesomeness, Ray Donovan is pretty well spoken about.

As for Orange is the New Black, I personally think it sucks but if you liked all of Weeds you'll like it. I think it is some absolutely wasted effort and the writing is just clichés and regurgitated drivel best left to a bygone era. Oz is the only Prison Drama worth a damn.

Watched Fargo enjoyed. Got over Arrow, same thing every week. Ray Donovan superb. It's hard once you've seen good ones the shit ones (mostly ones you'll see on say FOX8 and shit) are even shitter and almost unwatchable. Not much of a sci-fi man when it comes to TV series. I've had to go and watch some older series lately like deadwood (great show but worst ending in the history of TV). Well as for great writing Freaks and Geeks is excellent, Set in 1980 middle America, the life issues of American teens staring the future of American Comedy in Seth Rogen, Jason Segal and James Franco.

I've been hankering for a little Californication lately (though I'm reading Charles Bukowski who Hank Moody is clearly modelled on) and I only watched about 4-6 eps of each season, but found each to be well written and self deprecating in a good way.

One of my favourite shows is Psych, it's about a guy with well trained skills of observation and an endemic memory who sets up a fake Psychic Detective agency. It's a quippy show full of 80's pop culture references and a black white buddy show with a weekly who done it. It'll never be held up like Fargo or American Horror Story (though another brilliant show) but I watch it regularly and it never gets old.

Parks and recreation is fantastic, I love it and can binge on 10 or so eps without getting sick of it. I've not watched the first season but it is sold from season 2. Ron Swanson is a hero to me.

When I was a baker I used to like to come home and just binge on the Kids cartoons, Avatar the last Airbender, Dragon Ball Z, Yo ghi oh, these are great little shows with cool Ideas. Dragon Ball in its self ran for near 20 years from its original series, to Z and on to GT.

Check out Childrens Hospital (Comedy), it was a Internet show before getting picked up and is a great little comedy with some bizzar ideas

Other than that my other shows are mainly: Inbetweeners, IT Crowd, Doctor Who, Arrested development, Death Valley (think cops meets the walking Dead), Oh and if you watch and like Freaks and Geeks follow it up with Undeclared set in present day (though that is 2001 I think) staring that bloke from SOA, Seth Rogen and Jay Bershedual (Sic) and Jason Segal, coming of age Sitcom set in a College.

Treme.

By the same lot that did The Wire, based in New Orleans post Katrina. Has a hot violinist in it. And John Goodman. Can't lose.

Suits is good. Have only seen first two seasons but enjoyed it. From all reports, season 3 just turns to shit.

Touch is reasonably decent. Kiefer Sutherland with an autistic kid who sees patterns in numbers and how it all connects the universe. Or something. If you get past the premise, the show is pretty good. Only goes for 2 seasons.

Elementary is surprisingly excellent, if you haven't seen it. Had zero real interest in another Sherlock Holmes show after the awesomeness of Sherlock, however it is really good.

Burn Notice... basically a modern day MacGyver. Has Bruce Campbell in it so it's awesome anyway.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, the basic premise of the show is to get comedians/celebrities really drunk and then they act as narrator explaining particular events in history, while actors play out and lip sync the pissed-out narrators story..

Newsroom is by Aaron Sorkin, same guy that did The West Wing. If you loved that show, you will at least like this. Plus it has Olivia Munn in it as a smoking hot finance journalist.

OITNB is about a pretty clean cut (these days) white girl who gets jail time for drug running she did as a stupid lustful youth (whilst hooking up with Donna from that 70's show). I don't know if it gets gruesome in the second season or if the format changes, but mostly each episode focuses on the story of one of the other inmates. It's won a bucketload of awards (as a comedy...) but it's those awards that made me think it was completely different to what it actually is. Definitely one of the best shows I've seen in the last 5 or so years.

I definietely read there will be Fox 1-5, Fox Footy and Fox Sports news, plus further development of the red button function. It said there will be 7 sports channels.

Perhaps Fox Sports 5 won't be HD?? It'll all come to the surface soon.

Fox Sports News long overdue for the HD treatment. Thankfully they are doing something about it

IQ3 out before year's end apparently, which will incorporate FTA channels (via the antenna as you might already use, as seen in Austar's last STU), ability to record 3x live programs whilst watching a 4th, bigger capacity.

A few changes to the channel packaging (Platinum subscribers get 2x free Box Office films per month), and also a BoxSets feature, basically a library of select shows (Sopranos, Girls etc.) available to download via internet-connected STU

Bit of smoke and mirrors I reckon. I got the idea that SPEED (and possible Eurosport?) was being moved to Fox Sports 4 and 5.
And for us long suffering existing subscribers, I get the impression it won't necessarily be cheaper.
The official spin was that you'll get more content without having to ask (details unknown), but I'm pretty sure they'll package it is someway to make it "difficult" to reduce your monthly spend if you do ask.

So Netflix is due to launch March31 in Australia (I know you can already get it through service that remove geo-block).

What I want to know is how many people think this will change their viewing habits?

I know for me I already watch more of ABC iView, SBS OnDemand, BeIn Sports, iTunes Rentals.... and then the other channels if they are showing something that I can't rent from iTunes.

So for me I suppose this just opens up a whole range of new content for $10 a month that I wouldn't already have. While the Australian version will lack some big titles due to exclusivity agreements here in Aus (Orange is the New Black is the big one in this list, others like Game of Thrones and other large scale HBO titles will be included), I still think this is going to help progress the change in my TV viewing habits, and I probably will stop watching ten, nine, seven completely.

I have netflix over here in switzerland launched about 5 months ago... slow start but now getting alot more content... the old geoblock and saying in USA or the UK is really good (until i guess that catch up on it and yeah....)

crazy the difference in the content re uk and usa... yeah the us has the most contents generally speaking, the uk version has say alot of good british stuff the us doesnt so thats always worth a shout...

In my WG we have a tv but the system here you have to pay for tv in anycase and we havent as we wouldnt watch much normal tv anyways... mostly streaming online on various sites (not illegal here) and now netflix has added another better quaility dimension....

Better Call Saul, i can watch on netflix, watched first 2 episodes and i like it.... Its not breaking bad and its not marketed as such...

Caught the odd random episode up til S.5 back in the day.
Am currently up to the start of S.4.

It's both entertaining and pretty awful all at the same time to be honest.

Ari Gold is the only one who can act, and the Johnny Drama character has to be the worst ever.

Finished it up last and now I'm hanging for season 2.
Although it could be some time for season 2 as Marvel have committed themselves to Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist origin series before the Defenders Mini-Series. Weather or not they will fit a Daredevil season 2 in there somewhere I don't know, but I think they have to after they drop the massive Elektra reference in there.

As I stated earlier I'm so keen to see where they will go with the Defenders concept (although I think I know where they're heading with it) it's just a matter of them actually proceeding with it.

I only just discovered Nathan Barley, amazing show!! Made in 2005, but everything in it is so relevant today.. All about the rise of the fashion trendy hipster wankers and a writers hatred for them, basically the more he hates them, the more they worship him..
Written by Chris Morris and Charlie Brooker, its got Noel and Julian from Mighty Boosh in it (pre-Boosh), Richard Ayoade (It Crowd, Garth Marenghi, etc), Benedict Cumberbatch, whatever the blokes name is who plays the new Q in James Bond and a heap of other now famous English comedians/actors..

Has anyone read the books? Was any of that stuff last night in them? The big death at the end apparently has already been 'explained' on the internetz so probably won't turn out that shocking.

pretty meh season but a couple good episodes at the back end of it.

16-06-2015, 10:11 AM
There are a gazillion theories out there about his death. The return of Melisandre to Castle Black (she never leaves in the book) links in with one of the theories... with her being a Red Priestess and bringing him back to life (same happened with Thoros, the dude with the flaming sword from S1/2 and Lord Beric Dondarrion). The big nerd theory out there is that Snow isn't actually Ned's bastard, he is actually the offspring of Rhaegar and Lyanna. So he's actually a Targaryen... and the ultimate nerd theory is that him and Dany get hitched and save the world from the white walkers.

Or something.

parksey
16-06-2015, 10:49 AM
yeah i've already spoiled myself by stumbling across those theories.

the main problem i have with the show this season has been the writing. it's either been slow and boring or rushed and devoid of any logic.

i dunno if i liked the first ep

there was a bit too much going on for me. one of the first series' main strengths was its subtlety before a big reveal of a character flaw or plot twist.

and old mate just happened to find the body randomly while going for a motorbike ride with his lights off. seemed a tad hamfisted to me.

I know I'm years behind but I managed to get through the entire of Breaking Bad finally. Great show.

The Mrs and I are currently midway through S02 of Orange is the New Black - we resisted it for what seemed ages, but it's surprisingly better than expected.

I'm also in S03 of Bon's favourite - Peep Show. And far out, I can't believe I didn't watch it earlier. Absolutely hilarious British comedy! If you like IT Crowd, Mighty Boosh, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, etc then you'll love Peep Show. All of its seasons are on Stan, if you want an easy way to obtain it.

I'm catching up on BB as well... I got somewhere through S03 originally then the copy I had off my mate had two episodes mislabelled (was S02 not S03) and in a rage driven from some OC tendencies, I deleted the whole lot.

I've been watching this since season one and it annoys me. I'm glad it's one ep away from ending as it is just too farcical at times. Hal should have died at least once a season and so many other main characters too. Why they have to keep on living rather than doing the right thing.
Though in saying that this season has had better episodes and more tension than the past.

Just finished Jessica Jones on Netflix.
If you liked Daredevil then you will like this, I absolutely loved it and the Netflix part of the MCU has got it absolutely right. Now the long wait for Daredevil season 2 and Luke Cage next year.

As for Jessica Jones, from the outset it hits the ground running with its darker tone. The writers have used the source material perfectly with their own little spin on the story. There are a few little difference from the comics that have been changed to fit into this story and I quite liked them, although to the casual viewer you wouldn't notice that. Without going into it to much for spoilers in my opinion the villain in this series is exactly what you want to see and since the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe he has been the best villain yet.
A few of the episode drag on with necessary but boring dialog but all in all a solid 9.5/10 and a must watch.
