Not that he plays the same position but have heard we are signing Matt Millar from the gypos. Be great if true, he’s been far and away their best player all year.
Also Austin has signed for Sydney FC, thought he would be back at the gypos for sure.

without wanting to get into the whole debate about gypos and our club, but isnt it time the Double-eff-aye just signed off on club transfers and at least let these clubs losing players get some cash from the big boys*.
this whole crap about 'player is unhappy, player gets chatted up by the town slut club, player asks for release, club releases him acts like nothings up then signs straight away for other club' just looks silly.
lets make it a proper slave trade and have these fat owners put their paddles in the air in order to sign someone.

We need to allow transfers. Imagine if we had to pay money for guys like Austin or Ridenton? Such a good deterrent to get rid of footballers who aren't up to the standard and a great way for clubs to profit from development.

Hopefully one of them will be moved on. We don't need both of them given their high wages.
Also, this signing is great even just for laughs. Absolutely crushing them with this transfer.

Hoffs got a lot of utility value and Georgevski has been one of, if not our best player this season. If the club doesn't retain them I'm convinced we are severely strapped for cash.

I think we will be balancing the books because I reckon we threw a fair bit of cash to get him (remember at the time we were bottom of the league and he won the Championship and the Joe Marston Medal).
Gorgeous started the season really slow, but has come on strong the last few weeks. Is this a sign of his age? His discipline is questionable too. Will he be tempted to go to Western Melbourne for a few seasons? He'd be a big signing for them.
Millar has shone in a dour season for the mariners. He gets forward and that's what Ernie wants. He fits the profile for I'd suggest much less money. Money we can use to combine with Italiano's wage and be used for....i don't know...Birighitti???

Also, credit where it is due regarding Austin. In the past we would have signed a player like this for 2 years. We did a strong due diligence and I reckon he was on base coin. It's not worked out and we've probably pushed his agent to find him a new club. We've let him go and only out of pocket for 6 months wages. We'd have normally struggled to achieve this.

Who is reporting our interest?
Regardless, it's a move of intent from the club if it's true. We've moved quick on our target with Matt Millar, we've re-signed key players within the squad and those we see as the future. Acting like an aggressive club and I like it.

Well.....our return to the ACL.was without a doubt the most awful example of football I have seen played by apparent professionals in a very long time. We do we start? ODonovan, really? Petratos? The mistakes are comical, the standard is really very poor. Rather embarrassing for football fans locally if this is what we get behind week to week. ET against such a poor opponent leaves me in a tailspin.

Offload George and have Johnny K, Hoffman Cowburn and Miller as RB options. Makes sense to me.
Nothing against George but having a reasonable chunk of cap space being used on a fullback spot is just stupid in a salary capped league.

There's lots of valid arguments for keeping or releasing Georgie. He certainly appears to be a nucleus of squad bonding, getting along with everyone. That can't be underestimated.
The salary capped league argument is also valid. If he is taking up a fair chunk of the cap, is that the best space to spend it. Lots of teams get by without having a dedicated left back - Victory won the league without a left back. However, we've got a decent left back, which is something of a commodity. Why would we let that go?
My sense if this wasn't a salary capped league, we'd look to keep DG. However, we aren't and I think as a result we will see him move on. I'd still like to keep him - it's head vs heart stuff.

Wow, reference to Boogs there... :rof:
I read this part as way more of a reference to Boogs:
During his 56 games, the centreback has only received six yellow cards.
"That is when you know someone is a good defender," Griffiths said. "He doesn't slide in or make silly tackles because he is disciplined to be in the right place at the right time."
I read this part as way more of a reference to Boogs:
How good was Boogaards effort Sunday when Goodwin smashed it into the cross bar though
Dives in 35 yards out and gets neither ball nor man
Blokes standards have slipped
Least Kanta showed him how it is done in the 2nd half when he got carded

I actually think based on his current form this is not a bad thing, he will be able to mentor his successors and hopefully they can keep him on in an administrative role when he does hang up the boots, plus he wouldn't be the only defender in the league to reach mid-thirties before retiring and still be a decent player.

How the hell did he ever get signed by a K1 club like Incheon ?
He rarely scores goals [ 3 goals in 104 appearances] Wellington got nothing out of him and let him go, Gypos had him for two seasons where he did nothing - then ends up playing in the K League for one of their biggest clubs.
Blokes manager must be an absolute genius. He's state league standard not A-league.

it might be his fault, it might be coaches, it might be something else. but it might give a good insight into why the Jets youth system has pretty much been a failure so far.
No problem. Will see how I can get a link to him.

Players Remaining off Contract for next season:
Nick Cowburn
Daniel Georgievski
Roy O'Donovan
Ronald Vargas
Jair Eduardo
Lewis Italiano
Kosta Petratos
Jake Adelson
Patrick Langlois
Kwabena Appiah-Kubi
At the moment I'm keeping Cowburn only. I'm on the fence with Roy because I don't know what we can get that's better - would like us to have a look in Asia. But where do you find a 1 in 2 striker?
One thing is for certain - we need some pace and guile out wide if we're going to keep playing the way we are. However, I get a sense we are moving to 3 at the back next year.

the biggest let down for me signing Boogaard (who ive heard is a fantastic bloke BTW) and letting George walk. Doesnt George want to be a CB anyway? why not have him and Topor back there and let Ivan, Johnny K, Jackson, Hoff etc play the role out wide?

Statistically he still is (goal every 1.88 games for us/ goal every 152 minutes), but I think that paints over what I perceive to be that he "doesn't pass the eye test" - i.e. looks good on paper but not so good in reality.
I'm also sick of hearing from Ernie how good this guy is in training. I don't care! I wan't him to deliver that on game day otherwise i'd be sitting on the hill at the uni watching him slot home zero pressure shots.

As far as I'm concerned we now have the worst defence in the league. George was the only one who could do anything useful anymore.
Topor and Boogs are getting schooled by everyone and are just getting in some lucky blocks. Jackson can't play or defend or pass well. Johnny K isn't a great defender. Great bloke, should move into CM and learn that position better. Hoffman is now a striker according to Ernie. Millar is a winger.
We are not doing shit next year with these guys in defence. We need put it out early that Topor and Boogs are moving on and spend all our money on 2 new CBs.

All the talk on Roy brings up a good point and it's made me change my tune. Does anyone else in this squad look capable of close to 10 goals a season and do we trust the club to bring in someone who can do this consistently. Sadly my answer to both is no and I've realised Roy must stay unless this changes.
Roy's issue is his conversion rate from genuine chances. I know the Facebook warriors want to cite his goals to games stat but the real stat that matters is his conversion rate from genuine chances afforded to him and that has been very poor this season. If we go into next season with Roy as our first choice striker we are aspiring to once again a repeat of this season, mediocrity.
Fold the club if the excuse for not finding a replacement is " its all too difficult ".

I would be ok with him re-signing as long as there are more options. I want 3-4 players fighting it out for the 9 spot and the flexibility to play 2 up top. Either find a Aussie striker (needle/haystack scenario) or use jairs spot to sign a younger more all-round version of Roy.

Yeah that's true but he is the only goal scorer in the squad

The year Taggz won golden boot for us, he scored like 1 in 10 chances. And we adored him for it.
The only stat that matters is goals, and Roy has a phenomenal amount for the time he spends actually on the field for us. And like others have said, I struggle to predict we get someone with a better conversion rate.
Plus I don't see Roy any less functional this season than most others in the squad either. It's not an isolated problem.

I'm not a facebook warrior but I've been spruiking his stats to provide some points for discussion.
For what it's worth, he played 16 matches last season and 16 matches this season (to date).
17/18 he took 43 shots, 20 were on target and 9 were goals. 2 of those were penalties. That's a 47% on target rate, 21% conversion from all shots.
18/19 he has taken 55 shots, 19 have been on target and he's scored 9 goals. 1 was a penalty. That's 35% on target, 16% conversion from all shots.
And before I'm asked, I don't have the data for the likes of Toivonen, Barbarouses, LeFondre, Keogh but I'd be interested to compare when I have time (or if anyone wants to look it up on A-League website).

Last year Hoff got 6, Roy got 9, Dimi got 10 and Nabbout got 10 (i think).
so yeah, id trust that if the whole team gets back to playing well, we'll have many many.......ok maybe 2 players able to get into double figures.
Dimi back to his best, Joey with a full season, Hoff back, Thurgate with extended playing time.
sure, why not.
FWIW, i dont think Roy is hopeless. At the moment I dont think he is value for money based on his playing time, which is mostly due to his (lack of) discipline.

All those stats you quoted are south of where he was the previous season not north to indicate improvement or status quo to indicate on par with last season, That was my point nothing more nothing less.If one was doing a performance presentation it does go south. Throw in the sitters he missed and i see no reason to keep him. Offering him a deal for next season makes a statement about our ambition for next season unfortunately a bad one. A club with serious ambition to improve on the previous season would not go into the next with the same striker IMO.

You are correct i personally do not have faith in this clubs ability to recruit an adequate replacement hence why about a week ago i said those charged with the responsibility off the field with that job description need to move on also if they can no longer add value in doing that job properly. There are plenty including myself who continually call for Gallops head for a just cruising mentality and accepting the same outcome season after season, why should our club be the same where middle of the road is a pass mark. Signing and accepting average is exactly why where we are as a club.

For anyone watching the Shithole Derby, that Giancarlo Gallifuoco in DM was quality. Plays as a CB or DM, can spray a forward pass very well and has a better touch than almost everyone on our team. He's only back as an injury replacement for them but I reckon we should start sniffing around him to bring him here.

True.
He's still only 25 yrs old, which suprised the heck out of me. It was only one game and I was very much being a couch coach. But he looked like he had a better touch than the other 3 CMs out there at the time. He has legs to get around the park, although he wasn't troubled defensively much as Corica had set up for a draw??? even though they effectively handed the toilet seat to Perth.

Since Perth won the season is over now, can someone post the list of off contract players from all the other teams so we can start our yearly ritual of playing football manager on here and arguing over "signing the unwanted players who can improve" versus "**** the salary cap, sign Bobo, Brilliante, Ronaldo and Messi!!"
Probably needs its own thread to capture all the shit talk in one easy to clean location.

Kinda with you on this and what i was alluding to in my post. His saving grace in a safety first approach salary capped league is his A League experience. Ability wise i maintain he is a dime a dozen player on par with many " smarter than most types " running around in State League. Lets face it the current rubbish standard of the A League means most players on a clubs roster outside of the first 16 for arguments sake are that type of player Min wage bordering on average A League to looking smarter than most on a State League pitch.
Cowby's versatility and experience in the league make would him a safe choice for most clubs. Sadly it is that safety first approach most clubs take that deny plenty of others an opportunity. To the best of my knowledge he has had 4-5 seasons to establish himself and prove to others he should be regarded as a first 11 player as opposed to a squadie to fill a hole every now and then.

This isn't Football Manager / FIFA where you can play a 17yr old for a few months, hit the training button a few times and they become world class.
What sort of pool of young players do you think we have in this country? Because I can burst your bubble very easily and inform you that we have no proper youth systems in place and therefore very little knowledge about young players anywhere. We rely on other countries finding our youth and taking it early or, late bloomers like Mooy/Ryan/Degenek to move overseas and improve.

I thought this season Cowburn played some very good football. Delivered some wonderful free kicks / passes as well with very limited opportunities [He kicks better corners than Dimi].
He's far too good for state league gigs but in that Virgili type vortex of not quite being able to make a name for himself at A-League level.
Would I keep him at the Jets ? No. But I think at another club with more opportunities for him he just might surprise a few people.

I think he's good enough to play in the league. His set pieces are his strength.
I think we have let him go because we have adequate numbers in that position (CM) and other prospects coming through that could block their progress.
Fair play to Nick that he wanted to play centrally, but I think had he kept playing as a fullback he'd still have a Jets contract.

Interesting off season ahead.
The writing was on the wall for RV and Jair. I think we have players that are as good, if not better, in their preferred roles.
So if Roy re-signs, our currently signed players best 11 is something like the below:
GK - Moss
RB - Millar
CB - NTS/Boogs
LB - Vujica
CM - Sugar/Kanta
AM - Dimi
RW - Hoff
LW - JOWIC
ST - Roy
Fringe players
Italiano
James
Sheppard
Thurgate
Ridenton
Koutroumbis
Jackson
Simmons
Langlois
Kosta
Where should the Jets be targeting their marquee? And where else should we be looking at strengthening or adding depth?
Personally I would love to see us follow the NIX's lead from this season and sign an excellent GK and/or CB.

If that's the case, I don't understand the decision to lose Cowburn. Local, average, covers multiple positions. If the plan is to go budget, he's almost an ideal player to have.
The only player we can replace with a significantly cheaper player is the marquee (forgot we only had one)... we still have to spend to the salary floor, so unless we are going to get inferior players in at super inflated wages, the step down for everyone except Vargas isn't going to be huge.
Basically, what I am saying is that we may miss out on 7th next season.

If that turns out to be the case then this club will burn through every gain it made particularly with the local football fraternity from turning the shit show around in 17/18. I said to my young bloke i have real concerns about just how invested club ownership will prove to be next season and for the first time i may very well wait til the eve of the new season to decide whether to take up membership again.
I just never quite got the short sightedness of this season and loathe in planning for the first 8 weeks. If this club had of been able to go deep into the finals for a second season in succession who knows what next seasons membership and overall general interest in the club would of and could have been and just how many dollars that could have been equated to through increased sponsorship and membership revenue.
Either incompetence or penny pinching robbed the club of the best opportunity it has had in 10 years to turn shit around make this club a club of choice. Somebody at the club needs to be accountable for not capitalizing on that. I don't disagree with your summation on the running of the league. Gallop and co are clearly in it for there drive cars , inflated income and corporate cards.
If Gallop was fair dinkum he would have resigned long ago but the way the international schedule is he gets a free ride/junket to Asian Cups and World Cups every couple of years. I was fortunate enough to spend a week once with the CEO of the company i was working for. He had held similar roles for companies in the US and Europe for very familiar names in there respective industries and made it very clear in his opinion more often than not a CEO is a 4 year proposition. He considered this time frame long enough to appraise and then design and ultimately implement changes to reinvigorate or freshen up a organisation to sustain continued growth. He made a lot of a CEO being flexible to market changes and attitudes and not one new employee got away without reading a book called " who moved my cheese " I was skeptical at first but it is a great read for anybody charged with the responsibility of increasing revenues and growth by expansion, In any industry not just sport. Gallop and his hide behind Head of FFA Greg O Rourke could do well to read this book as opposed to this head in the sand everything is alright attitude we get from FFA season after season. And put simply Gallop has had long enough as a failing CEO. He has had his approx 4 years with no real measurable improvement to the game i can see.

yeah, i understand your resentment of Gallop and Co and aint here to defend them.
but
There is a lot than be wrong with this type of attitude as well. In the life of a business, 4 years is nothing. The amount of people who take these jobs knowing they are after another one in the short term tend to perform in a certain way that isnt conducive to the long term success and sustainability of the company.
The biggest change in the history of the A-league (letting clubs contro it) will be the true test, and thats gonna need Gallop to get out of the way.....which is a skill in itself for someone in his position.
Gallop is a real problem, He just turns up week after week season after season overseeing mediocrity measurable by just about any meaningful KPI yet there seems to be this reluctance from financial stakeholders ie owners to generate a necessary and much needed mood for change.
I read some viewing stats just recently , i think from from the weekend the Jets beat City at home with the under strength side and Fox sports viewing numbers were frighteningly bad across that entire weekend. If the game continues on its current trajectory funding from sponsorship and corporate partners will decline to a point where there may not be a HAL type comp to worry about.

Did I read it right that Lawrie is or has been in China visiting the boss and sorting out the budgets etc?
If so, comments upon his return will be very interesting.
One thing we can expect is the usual 'patience' theme that Lawrie and Ernie run with the last 2 offseasons. Therefore our 'major' signings will be signed late in the preseason again and again they will arrive 'not as fit as aniticipated' so they will take the usual 6-8weeks to get fit.
FFS we should already have our list of targets and budgets should be known. We need to have the whole squad fit and firing for Rd 1 next season, not this waiting until a few weeks out from the season to finalise the squad.
