This rain is sticking around for another month off n on.
At some point clubs will be chopping up their grounds to get games played. It's just a matter of when.
I'd suggest the need for ground preservation is just about gone. The council shutting everything down is the other major problem.
The council in Lake mac do not shut down grounds, they leave it up the clubs, Newy council do the blanket shut downs.
Its not always about ground preservation, i think safety plays a big part in all of this also, if you have never had to call games off before its just not that simple.
We have 3 catch ups and each time games were called the thoughts were:
1: to wet with puddles = 40/60 it could dry out hopefully, depends on future forecast.
2: rip the ground up 50/50 wont be good later on, but that's life sometimes, give it a roll.
3: slippery surface = this is the hardest one, seen to many broken and twisted parts over the years due to this one.

Bad example, remember playing a game at Cahill Oval. The pitch in the middle was an ice skating rink. Fine to walk on. But try changing direction or stopping. Horrendous.
I never really understood the “safety” aspect of calling off wet grounds, until you have a major injury.
The wet and slippery stuff is okay. It’s the sticky mud, especially in combination with long studs many wear to counteract the “soft ground”. They definitely help with preventing slipping and improve grip. But instead of the weak point in any twisting/stopping being the the ground and studs, the weak point is often the ligaments. Especially if you’re not used to wearing longer studs.
The biggest difference I’ve noticed this year, is there’s a lot more cloudy/rain threatening days. There’s not many sunny or even windy days in between the rain to help it dry out. So the overall rainfall might be the same, or less, but the sunshine and wind is also much less.
Edit: oops, off topic rant cause I thought I was in the “are we being too precious” thread

Not to mention full grown adults coming in on each other at 100% intensity without any grip. It's a recipe for disaster. Uncontrolled collisions are more of the danger rather than slipping and twisting in my mind.

So this ground is more dangerous than wet grounds. Yes Ive ice skated on Cahill.
Brem is spot on with potential injury in the wet. But, most injuries ive seen in wet or dry are the dkheads making stupid contact and nothing to do with weather.

you know what, we have tried everything we can to play at Evans on both grounds, but when you walk across the field and you sink into the ground, we ain't playing on that surface.
So Samcan, where's your ground at?

I think the point is that when you look at injuries that don't involve oppostion, occur more often on wet, slippery and soft grounds rather than dry grounds. Some of the worst injuries I've witnessed over the years were on wet grounds with no other players involved.

The red card in ressies (which I didn’t see but heard there was no complaints for the 2 yellows) and the pen and keeping howler in first meant Dudley didn’t help themselves. Suns took their chances and took the points. Can’t be any complaints. First grade Dudley didn’t look up for the contest which was surprising.

If that’s Dudley’s keeper for the whole season they are in trouble
Was a good game to watch not many of the Dudley locals out for the biggest derby in Newcastle Football though which was disappointing.
Ref had a great game also I thought compared to what I’ve seen this season

The ref definitely one of the better ones that we have seen. I guess that’s the difference with a Sunday game, there’s more quality available.

The ground held up pretty well. Seemed a bit softer at the northern end, but all in all it was pretty good.

Cracking day though. Still a hard fought match. Ressies was an exciting one. And the crowd was definitely there in numbers. More there than what you would have seen at NPL fixtures over the weekend.

Don’t know what you’re smoking champ. The home team posts the results (Dudley last week) and they’re all correct. Suns win in firsts and ressies, Dudley win in thirds.
If you’re referring to social media, we ALWAYS post our results, unlike other clubs that pick and choose to post only if it suits them.
You obviously struggle to read, so I’ll clarify todays results to help you out.
First grade; Westlakes 4-3

Fair play to Westlakes and congrats on the win - enjoy it. We weren’t good enough today. If you concede four goals, you dont don’t deserve to win. Gracious in defeat here.

Good game today, Swansea were the better side in the first half, but in the second it was the opposite with Azzuri coming out firing.
The game got a bit fiery in the end with some poor challenges from both sides. [comment removed]
Quite disappointing with a small amount of Azzuri supporters on the sideline. They were heard by the whole ground yelling homophobic comments towards the ZPL Bad Boys shit haircut. Poor form from 'The Peoples Club'. A Swansea player gave them a spray so hopefully a few Azzuri fellas can grab a dictionary and learn some better insults.

Agreed very disappointing with the individual that made those comments. We are dealing with that person internally, sincerest apologies from a club perspective. We have moved on a lot of players from previous seasons that have caused us similar headaches and it’s not what we want at the club.
Two wrongs don’t make a right, however it must be noted that it is equally as disappointing that the “ZPL Bad Boy” wasn’t pulled up for slinging similar slurs from the bench at several points throughout the game. Hopefully Swansea deal with this internally also.

For me any ground as long as it’s a ZPL club keeping the money in ZPL and that hasn’t happened for a long time..

Yes

Dudley - Lydon
Maybe
Mayfield - Mayfield Park
Westlakes - Rathmines
No
Suns - Myer Park
Azzurri - Hexham/Tarro
Cardiff - Evans Park
Warners Bay - John St
Swansea - Chapman Oval

Zero ZPL grounds are suitable.
The Athletics track is exactly that.
Dudley would have to bring some toilets that are actually accessible and bring in additional catering facilities.
Mayfield sadly is concrete in the middle. Nobody wants to play on that.
Westlakes too far.
Myer Park too open.
It's not worth continueing with the rest.
Needs to be hosted as it has been in previous years at likely an NPL facility or I guess a left field option would be a joint venture ZPL thing at No. Sportsground in town.

We will have a proper electronic scoreboard on the hill come finals if that sways anyone 😇

Certainly not having a dig at Westlakes, because I think the facility and club is great. But you are absolutely having a laugh. 25 minutes from where exactly? It's 45 minutes from Wickham which is the centre of town. People are not going to make the treck out there on a Sunday to watch the grand final there. If they drive, they can't drink (bad for Westlakes). Getting taxis and ubers from all around Newy is just nonsense. So yeah, like I said, it's too far.

I just can't stand the idea of everyone being at the game all on one side of the pitch with a running track, long jump pits all between the supporters and the players. The positives for Ath Field is the surface and location. That's about it.
A fenced off rectangluar ground that you can sit around on all sides is needed. The ZPL grand final day is a stand alone event, always pulls a great crowd. I strongly stand by that fact that ZERO ZPL grounds is up to the requirements to host such a day.
The previous days at Magic Park and Adamstown is what you need. There's no two ways about it. Great facilities, central location.

It's all well and good to start the discussion in here. I guess we will just see who is actually prepared to do the work and put in an application. Running grand final day is bigger than what a lot imagine, which is probably why the last 3 grand finals have been hosted at Magic Park. I don't know if there have been more than one application any of those years?
I'm sure if there's a decision to be made between a ZPL ground or an NPL ground, there will only be one winner. As mentioned, I strongly do not feel any of our grounds in the comp are suited.

Cookers v Cardiff has been called off at the athletics track to much rain.
Refs called NPL off today, so the committee called tomorrow off also.
I called it.
Walked it around 11 after work this morning. Puddles all over it.
Talking to Cam Burns after the Lake Macquarie saga a few weeks ago, the issue is with surface water and whether the ball will stop.
Seems to be what a ref call is based on and going on the condition of the ground this morning, the refs called it. Not the club.
However, if it happens in an A-League game and jnr Griff scores from the assist from Puddle, then it's all good.
Since our friends at BOM last night predicted 3-8mm for today, we've had 5.5mm to 24h rain fall (Fri up to 9am Sat).
9am onwards stat is at the time of writing for N'cle is 18mm...and rising. 25mm @ Merewether.
I must say I was surprised when the message came through from our canteen person that refs had called it, hence my immediate need to inspect.
I sent a photo to Boz. It's worse since then. I was at the ground Friday too for the record. All good.
I'm wondering if people still have this illusion that the ground is what it was when Smithy used to train there 3 x a week with Magic: rain, hail or shine.
We've had 3 large topsoil events since those days on the pitch. The first was when I acquired the overburden from the stadium when 'the hump' was removed for Asian Cup game preps.
The 2nd was when NCC needed to offload a few hundred cubes about a year later in an emergency.
We've had the ground resurfaced and profiled with Santa Ana that was planted. That's probably another 150mm in places all over the field.
I can tell you, after 13 years of consistently working on that field, it doesn't drain like it used to.
Who knows? Maybe the ref looked up BOM or some app and looked at the field and also considered what was coming.
I just had a photo sent from our founding President of Adamstown Oval - screenshot from BarTV? Looks trashed....

I was at Adamstown game. Ball stopped after most pas’s .One instance Crowley beat keeper only had a tap in and ball stopped dead just before entering net….Ref called a stop in play at about 25m mark to talk to skippers and after discussing tried to continue but after another heavy shower they pulled the pin. Seen ball boys drop the ball at head hight from side line and didn’t bounce once … just flopped on the ground… too wet unfortunately

A lot of football to come still. A lot of clubs hammered with player availability at the moment. Today was far from one way traffic. Hopefully Cardiff can keep climbing and crack the top 4. Then we can have another crack later in the season.

I love our first grade more than anyone does, but our 3rds are our highest performing team in terms of ladder position.
Ressies have been competitive in a lot of games but just not able to grind out results, which you need to be able to do if you are to be competing at the top end of the table. Whereas our firsts have managed to win games without hitting our straps yet. That’s football I guess though.

Yet somehow their 3rds are running 2nd and were up 2-0 at one stage on Saturday?
And both goals for Dudley had a huge bit of luck involved with the first goal being a clear handball missed by the Linesman and the 2nd goal was a rebound off the post that their striker literally fell on...
The ground actually looked like it held up reasonably well from the stands. Might have been a different case playing on it though?

Disappointing that speers point complex was made unavailable Friday night until Sunday for use with the Women's State Cup on there.
With the wet weather making training and games not an option, hiring a court would have been the next best thing.
But the women's State Cup has the whole complex. Surely football 5's courts could have been made available on Friday night at a minimum, especially given the fine weather on Friday and Saturday.
Football should have made a bigger play for Pasterfield sports complex at Cameron Park. I don't think the AFL have missed a game there this year, even playing yesterday. Great facilities, good pitch and enough room for 2 grounds. Football's loss is AFL's gain.

Women’s State Cup is booked well in advance and has teams travelling decent distances to participate in the weekend. Lots of organisation goes into it, it deserves priority.
NNSWF need to make Speers Point more readily available during the week though instead of prioritising teams training there. Couple of games a night on each field would sort a lot of issues.

I understand that and it does deserve priority, It's possibly nnsw footballs best attended weekend competition. But I also find it hard to believe that all football 5 fields are being used. Especially on Friday night

Disappointing that speers point complex was made unavailable Friday night until Sunday for use with the Women's State Cup on there.
With the wet weather making training and games not an option, hiring a court would have been the next best thing.

Comes down to useless Northern and Councils not spending the money to upgrade facilities on the sport with the highest participants but we continue to have the worst facilities.

Hopefully not. Surely they would be looking to play the full ZL round of fixtures from the weekend in one of the two washout weekends, and leave the previous reschedules for clubs to sort out midweek?

State Cup is a NNSWF competition champion, ridiculous suggestion to play it in Sydney.
Would love more synthetic pitches up here, however seeing as the "2 or 3 more" that you mention don't exist, NNSWF could help out a bit by making their fields more readily available seeing as just about all competitions in the region are in a bit of a state.

I went past just before to have a look at it. The majority is quite good, but there's a big section right through the guts, box to box that isn't great. If there was no more rain coming, you'd get on this weekend and it would probably be pretty chopped up. But if we get this 15-30mm they have predicted the next 48 hours it might be tough. I guess we will just see what comes and re-evalufate after that.

I think the hardest thing would be team have already paid for the use of the facility for training and it is used every night I’m pretty sure
So would northern just refund and say we are playing catch ups all week or how would it work ? Because I’m sure magic train there so they are using their training slot to catch up tonight along with also edgeworth. Would be interesting to see what northern can honestly do.
With the state of Broadmeadow Magics pitch currently would be good to maybe see them go synthetic I don’t see any other club but them having the financial means to do it and actually having their own ground.

Firstly, I honestly don't think there's a single club who doesn't want to play.
Secondly, you can't jujst play on a ground that's ****ed already, just because.
With all due respect, maybe you need to just go and have a walk on some of the grounds and see how water logged they are.
I promise you that all players are itching to get out and play. The only thing standing in the way of that at the moment is mother nature. One or two days of sunshine doesn't fix the hundred's off mm rain we have had. Just as grounds start to dry out, we get further downpours.

Can't understand why anyone from ZPL would want to go up to a higher grade. I think ZPL is in as strong a place as it has ever been. It's evident that not everyone wants to be playing at the higher level with that commitment and happy to play with mates in a very competive league.
I'm sure every club is in the same boat, where there is just a few people that all the work for the running of clubs. Volunteers are getting harder and harder to find. The expectations and demand for NPL is now becomming a joke where it could sadly end up like Sydney and Melburne where you need to start paying volunteers to run the clubs.

I’m sure someone will shit can me but anyway….
There’s some clubs in NL1 that want to be NPL standard & will work hard to make the standard from u9 to 1st grade.
There’s some clubs in NL1 that are happy where they are and do the youth and JDL/youth thing to tick the box
There’s some clubs in zone league that aren’t having a bar if the “elite” pathway, know that competitive footballers will come out of community football & others will be churned out of NPL/nl1, along with clubs developing their community pathways.
The thing about football is that it’s big enough to accomodate all of that, plus community football (aA/o35). The biggest problem with football in the region is the lack of structure that leads to the empire building that zones, clubs & northern all try to achieve individually but refuse to collaborate on. If they all worked together instead of fighting each other, progress might just follow

It can be tough. When things don't go your way with regards to injuries and player availability, it tends to snowball and just get worse. With the flu season and covid still floating around, the stacked fixtures list, it's hard to deal with and manage injuries and everything else. Hopefully for them, it's something they can turn around.
We have been in that position before and I think it's better for everyone involved to bite the bullet on thirds and get two fit sides out on the park at least. Nothing worse than expecting 11 players to play two grades every week (or twice a week at the moment!).
Looking at their results, they have been competive in quite a lot of games, despite registering just one win. Although it's always best to get the games played, I don't think them forfeiting third grade does anything to question their commitment or the integrity of the competion.

Pretty much summed it all up in one neat message Lofty.
It is our second forfeit in thirds the other was against Dudley.
Sunday games are always going to be a battle for us due to a high number having work commitments on that day so that they can be available on Saturday.
Add the COVID and Flu situation this year (not just for the player personally but being a big family club it’s also down to their kids being ill etc)
And as Lofty said it’s one thing to double up on a normal matchday weekend but when we have 3 midweek catch-ups in succession we can’t have guys doubling up. We already had a bunch play 2 games midweek and then again this weekend just to get the midweek games on and then it’ll be the same again this midweek most likely.
We go out of our way to use our multi registered players or bring our U17 up to get them used to the mens game so we can put out competitive sides every week.
Hopefully we can keep putting in competitive performances for the rest of the season especially with our Old Boys Day this weekend against the Suns 😊

Some guys have been doubling up midweek too, a handful will be playing their 5th game in 7 days tomorrow night.
For whatever reason, when it rains, it pours and we seem to either have 40 or 20 blokes available.
Dudley apparently back in form just in time to play us this week, good result for them over the weekend. Looking forward to see how the top 4 ends up and who can put it together in the finals.
