Almost mid way through the season and it?s already quite clear that the top four are panels ahead of the chasing pack.
Fully fit, Azzurri are the only team I could see making a run outside of the four. Teams that came up from ZL1 not handling the step up one bit. Cardiff lacking from previous years unfortunately.

I need you to explain how you think Azzurri can make a run and who they are missing that can help them to go almost undefeated the second half of the season. And hope someone in the top 4 loses 4 games. They are 4 wins behind 4th place. This explanation should be good

It?s top 5 isn?t it champ? They just have to make the 5 which is easily doable considering the lack of quality in the bottom half of the comp and who knows?

From what I’ve seen I don’t think Dudley, Suns, Warners Bay & Kotara are going to drop many points outside of playing one another. I think the incentive for finishing at least in 3rd place will be very high though to avoid an elimination match in the first week of the finals.

This finals system is a much fairer system for the lower grades as the emphasis and advantage is definitely around your finishing position more so than home ground.

On the subject of home grounds, Myers Park is looking good. Was that grant money or is a council job? Regardless it’s looking like a real football venue.
Just need some stands and it’ll be the business.

It's coming along now. A shame it took so long to kick off! It's a mix of state grant, council and club contribution.
There will be 2 x 12m, 4 tiered covered grandstands on either side of half way for both Myer 1 and Myer 2. The perimeter fencing for each field is also just about complete. It's going to make a huge difference to the facility.
Without any hiccups, we are hopeful that our first home game will be 24 June against Kotara.

There is a new Sun God to Worship and his name is William McMaster.
I hate to say it but the ZPL Bad Boy is back better than ever, the injury prone menace to society has managed to get 90 minutes under his belt for the first time in 732 days.
I normally roast the bloke but today, but I cant. There was no gorilla slaps, no bullshit, just a man on a mission going out of his way to destroy the Salary Sombrero Suns.
After a quality cross from our own Tommy Turbo, the ZPL bad boy scored a bicycle kick to which the keeper appreciated so much he watched it go into back of the net.
Once scored there was sighs all round from the crowd knowing that The ZPL Bad Boy is never going to shut up about this.
It was a quality end to the day, unfortunately the day started poorly in 3rds with their #11 Luke decided to use a homophobic slur. First Azzurri with the crap last year and now the Suns, there must be something in the water in Newcastle. Be better

no names, Dudley player tangled with Cardiff player, a messy tackle, they both fell down, a bit of a headlock was put on the Cardiff player, Cardiff player then lashed out on the ground, wasn't much but enough to be sent, i think the Dudley player received a yellow.

I find that attitude from refs infuriating. Wasn't in ZPL but had a guy on our team in a similar position, dodgy tackle from the opposition followed by that player holding our guy down. Our guy shoves him to get free of the headlock and he gets a red and 2 weeks for violent conduct (although thankfully the opposition player copped a red as well). Apparently if someone is pinning you to the ground while his mates come in for a go as well you just have to lie there and take it.

Cardiff player went off as directed, took his shirt off, just about to neck a brew, ref came over, rescinded the card, player went back on.
2 minutes later after more discussions with Dudley players and liney, gave the same player the card again and sent him off.
Conversation was they thought they sent the wrong bloke off the first time...

Nah mate it was the liney that dropped him in it. He got the right bloke and the liney told him it wasn’t. When he came back out the players confirmed he was right. Can’t blame the ref - this one’s on the touchy

Does anyone from Croatia even want to try and justify why they are spending that absurd amount of money on a single player? If you’ve got that amount of coin to throw around why not invest it into the grassroot resources of your club and try and build something respectable for the long term? Correct. That's been the story for Azzurri all season according to a few of their boys I'm mates with. It also helps keep games tight when you have a gun keeper and line up with 6 defenders like Azzurri do; some quality defenders in the backline too.

Between a former NPL goalkeeper, NPL field player and young guys that give it 110% every week such as the blonde Englishmen, Azzurri will always give a creditable account of themselves in defence. A tight one with the benchmark of the league does not come as a surprise.
I will agree with The Hacker for once, Azzurri lack polish up front, something they have had plenty of in previous years.

Dudley arguably have around 20 first grade players. With the few boys out, they still had Pichaloff in ressies not able to find a first grade starting spot. The depth they have this year is as strong as we have seen in ZPL.
Not arguing that they dont have quality in abundance however 5-6 changes to a team is still quite significant and of course theres a high chance the team will be a bit disjointed until they have played a few weeks together.

Very surprising that they are 4th. Cardiff out muscled them in the second half. And yes constantly winging to the ref but what can you expect they are a team full of 20 year olds.

Northern NSW Football and the Joint Interdistrict Zones are delighted to announce the return of promotion and relegation to NNSWF’s senior men’s premier competitions from the 2024 season as well as the connection between NNSWF’s premier competitions and the Zone Football League for the first time. This follows on from the forming of a working group at the beginning of 2023, after the Northern NSW Football board made promotion and relegation a key priority for football in the region.
The new structure for NNSWF’s senior men’s football has been designed to enhance player development, increase overall club development, improve fan engagement and provide more competitive matches. NNSWF will continue to fully administer the NPL Men’s NNSW and HIT106.9 Northern League competitions while the Interdistrict Member Zones, Newcastle Football, Macquarie Football and Hunter Valley Football, will remain responsible for the Zone Football League.
But with the connection of the Zone Football League to NNSWF’s premier competitions there will be a fully- functioning football pyramid in northern NSW for the first time, allowing aspirational clubs to move up to higher levels based on sporting performance.
How it will work
The 12 clubs competing in the 2023 NPL Men’s NNSW will remain in the competition for 2024, while HIT106.9 Northern League One will remain a nine-team competition at this stage.
The Zone Premier League, Zone League One and Zone League Two will remain 12, 10 and 10-team competitions respectively, but will be renamed Zone League One, Zone League Two and Zone League Three.
At the end of the 2024 season, the team that comes 12th in NPL Men’s NNSW will be relegated to HIT106.9 Northern League One, while the team that finishes first in HIT106.9 Northern League One will be promoted to NPL Men’s NNSW.
Promotion Play-off
The team that finishes 11th in NPL Men’s NNSW will join the teams that finish second, third and fourth in HIT106.9 Northern League One in a promotion/relegation play-off series to determine the 12th team in NPL Men’s NNSW in 2025.
This will involve the 11th team from NPL Men’s playing the fourth team from HIT106.9 Northern League One, and the second and third teams from HIT106.9 Northern League One, playing each other in two-legged home and away matches. The two winners will then meet in one match to decide who will play in the NPL Men’s NNSW competition.
Connecting the pyramid
The team that finishes ninth in HIT106.9 Northern League One will not be relegated to Zone League One at the end of 2024 due to the current bye. Relegation from Northern League One will commence from the 2025 season. But the team that finishes first in Zone League One in 2024 will be promoted to HIT106.9 Northern League One to make a 10-team league in 2025.
There will remain five-team finals series’ in the Zone Football League, with a straight one club up/one club down promotion-relegation model to come into effect between Northern League One, Zone League One, Zone League Two and Zone League Three.
Draft League Criteria
With the introduction of Football Australia Club Licencing later this year, the new criteria – which can be found HERE – outlines the minimum base requirements for each level of our football pyramid. The NPL level of this criteria is required to reflect the new National Licensing Criteria for NPL developed in conjunction with Football Australia. As the NPL criteria will be our highest standard, the criteria for all levels will remain in draft form until the national criteria is confirmed.
The criteria focuses on five key areas: sporting, infrastructure, personnel, legal and financial.
For NPL Men’s NNSW and Northern League One clubs this criteria, while formatted differently, will be similar to the previous criteria in terms of key requirements with some more flexibility given in relation to matchday venues and coaching requirements.
For Zone Football League clubs, this criteria will simply formalise many of the things your club are already doing and provide a more solid framework for running your club. This criteria is included to assist club development. Northern NSW Football and the Interdistrict zones will help clubs meet this criteria over the coming years.
Further Information
NNSWF have developed a specific landing page which includes an explainer video and graphic and in depth answers to FAQs, which will be live on the NNSWF website on Wednesday morning.
Collectively, we genuinely believe this a hugely positive step for football in northern NSW and will work with all clubs involved to help them thrive in this new league system.

Years ago when clubs had two different teams running around the comps and pro/rel was a thing there always had to be 1 grade between the two teams. So if one team was in newfm the other couldn?t go higher then ZL2. But the easy way to solve that is to no longer allow clubs to run two teams in these competitions, now that it is a full pyramid from top to bottom.

You can bag thirds all you want, but it's no surprise that the clubs that value thirds sit at the top end of the table year in, year out. Those same clubs have a great club culture which stems from longevity of players being in and around the club.
It would be interesting to know which club you are associated to so that we could have a full understanding of your thinking. I'm sure everyone will be happy to hear your arguments that are pro no third grade rather than just bagging out clubs that do find value in it.

Interesting to see what happens next season if Hamilton Azzurri hold onto the promotion spot they are currently sitting in ZL1. The ZPL Azzurri dont look like they will be getting relegated so would we have two squads from the same club in next years ZPL competition?
Or do Croatia take one of the spots by default?

There's a FAQ up on the NNSW website.
Sounds like no teams in the same division from the same club, if the lower team earns promotion they would offer it to second place.
They don't mention the possibility of a team being relegated down to a division with an existing team, unsure of the scenario there.
No teams from the same club allowed in NPL and NewFM due to the playoff tournament arrangement.
Sounds like NNSW is not mandating Zone comps to drop third grade, however on promotion to NewFM a team would be only be able to field the two grades.
Control over whether ZFLs stay with existing setup of three grades or otherwise would be under the control of the Zones, as I read it.

But assuming the current ZPL Azzurri do somehow miraculously avoid relegation that would still mean we have two Azzurris in next seasons competition if the Crabs do earn promotion from ZL1. Just swapping them for one another would mean the ZPL is still one place short.

Newcastle Football needs even more new/revived clubs throwing money/rewards/favours at higher level players and being promoted without winning leagues. It's genuinely entertaining and provides great value to an otherwise fairly stale competition. I'm excited in a few years when we all forget what Croatia are doing or have done, and focus on the next club to do it. The cycle continues.

With what appears to be promotion/relegation among us across the 5 competitions, I assume over the years the current zone premier league sides will continually be promoted with current northern league 1 sides continually relegated as I have read on these threads over many of years that the zone premier league is a far superior league and it will be great to see the competitions in the right order for once, even if it will take a while. Or is it easier to just swap the competitions to begin with?

I have a feeling there will be a number of current ZPL clubs that would turn down promotion if that is even an option. There's already a stretch on volunteers across the board. I don't know how many ZPL clubs are ready for the step up, more so off the field rather than on the field.
On the field, I think the top 5 or so ZPL teams would give themselves a good showing.

The original name was going to be Northern League 2, with the next two tiers in the pyramid to be called Northern League 3 and Northern League 4, but because the zones keep admin control can't call it Northern League besides there is already a Premier League in the system, can't have two Premier Leagues.

So let me put this to you. If Cardiff do finish last. And azzuri in ZL1 win the comp, what happens here? Azzuri can?t have 2 teams in the same competition, do Cardiff survive the drop?
We have already determined that Cardiff will be relegated and Croatia will come up and take their place.

It appears that way yes haha
If Azzurri ZPL survive and Azzurri ZL1 get promoted do both squads maybe remain in the ZPL but the ZL1 lads go and associate with a new club that doesn’t currently have a Zone licence?

How does everyone see the top 5 finishing?
Swansea 4 points adrift of Mayfield in 5th.
Olympic 3 behind them and Westlakes a further 2 points with 7 games to play.
Mayfield don't play any of those 3 teams again. So that doesn't really give any of the teams below a chance to steal points of them.
Kotara and Warners Bay a point ahead of Mayfield.

I still think the top 5 will remain as is. Pretty clear Dudley & Suns will be fighting it out for the premiership but third place is definitely up for grabs and Im sure the teams below would want to avoid a first up finals elimination match.

I mean no disrespect to Minmi, they’ve been in good form, albeit I’ve not seen any games. Dudley have won their last 5 games by a single goal. I just think they’re due for a big performance on a sunny Sunday at Lydon. Minmi not quite the same on the road as they are on their home slope.

Bay had a penalty saved early in second half which would have squared it up at 2-2 and Bay with all the running. That was the key moment in an entertaining match. Ref did well to stay out of it even though it was very physical at times, and ultimately it was Kotara who took their chance when it came and they deserved the win. Went down to Dudley to see the scheduled ?drubbing?. 1st half was all one way traffic with Minmi losing two to injuries. 2nd half Minmi were arguably the better side. Maybe it was dudley taking the foot off the accelerator or maybe Minmi actually turned up for the second half. Either way Dudley showing why theyre the cream of the crop.

To be honest nobody that has been within the club for a long time has talked us up on here nor considered ourselves to be finals contenders.
Most of us old boys at the start of the were eyeing a 5-8 finish as acceptable, which yep, we are still currently failing in that department.
Still two teams below us on the table but everyone writing us off as relegated already.

Excellent point. This doesn't get talked about enough IMO. Absolute turkey behaviour last year from that coach. From what I've heard, during preseason, he told the azzurri squad that he almost went undefeated a couple years ago conveniently missing the year in between that year and this one where he led Merewether to almost relegation.

Went out to see Westlakes vs Warners Bay as a neutral fan today.
4-1 full time. Westlakes denied a stone cold penalty then conceded 2 soft goals (one should have been disallowed for handball)
Somehow ended up 4-0 down at half time after creating multiple chances in the first 10 minutes.
Game ended in controversy with a westlakes lower grade player and Warners Bay?s #10 having a go at each other with Warners Bay?s #10 calling him a fat autistic **** after a couple of heckles from the Westlakes player.
Warners Bay then tried to blame the westlakes player for the heckles and saying he started it. Very short memories from those lads with their ressies players going to the WPL game last year after their grand final win heckling Women at their game. When someone from Westlakes mentioned that game their coaching staff got very defensive.
Westlakes somewhat unlucky on the day to not pick up a point. Also the field was barely playable down one flank and absolute mud pit.

I don't know the identity of Undertaker but I don't believe they are a part of Westlakes.
A Warner's Bay official told us they don't condone the actions of that player and will be dealing with it. I don't see any positives in dredging into the particulars of what happened, I don't think it necessarily needs to be aired out in this forum.
Football wise we felt a little hard done by with some of the decisions, but end of the day WB took chances and we didn't - the scoreline is hard to argue against. On to next week.

Yes a player retorted to a heckle, yes it was dealt with, yes the crowd were dealt with and yes both parties(clubs)have parts to play in it.obviously more here than just ?one quote? however wbay did not ?blame? one particular player nor action.
As for the shade being thrown for last year I believe your apples and oranges analogy here fits as not only untrue but not even close to comparable to the weekend.

Unplayable is a bit much. It was decent deck to play on for Thirds and Ressies and a bit of ice skating in Firsts just made it that bit more interesting.
Perhaps our Thirds and Ressies rain dance was that bit better so they could play in the dry!
Macca is right it was a game of chances and Warners Bay took theirs. Credit to the W Bay goalkeeper as well, made a couple of outstanding saves to keep us from getting into the game.

Cog - great read and we all thank you.
Mindblowing how much teams seem to struggle with away games!
Just a couple of small ones, feel free to ignore. I just wanted to let you know incase they were oversights - Azzurri has two R's, and Westlakes is just one word without a cap.
Kind regards

Or just how much stronger and more comfortable teams are at home. There's a massive difference in ground quality, sizes, slopes.... etc. Certain grounds suit certain teams. We don't have massive crowds in local league, but home support always helps a little too.

The run of no draws continues!
Swansea closing the gap on the top 5 and with massive games against Dudley, Kotara, Westlakes and Warners Bay. Should they get the points required in those games it will be a big effort and deserving place in the finals.
Kotara with just 1 win from their last 6 games face Olympic, Swansea, Minmi and Suns. The big game at Swnasea will have a lot to say on how things finish.

Premiership race could have a potentially exciting finish as well. Suns will have to win out for the rest of the season (which will include having to beat Dudley) and hope one of the other teams can at the very least jag a draw off the Thistles. Will then come down to GD.

I can't see a team winning the Grand Final from 4th or 5th. That would require winning 4 straight games including beating both Dudley and the Suns. You also have to factor in the more games the higher chance of injury and suspension with card hungry referees around finals time.

What about the race for the wooden spoon and the relegation battle? Azzuri are safe. The Uni could find themselves in trouble if Cardiff defeat Minmi this Sunday.
Cardiff lose and they are odds on to be relegated..

Azzurri ZL1 might save Cardiff from being relegated anyway. They need just 1 point from the last two to confirm the Premiership. Unless the Automatic spot goes to second who currently is Croatia

If Azzurri ZPL end up safe and Azzurri ZL1 finish first, is it more fair to still enforce the bottom team to be relegated and bring up a team that didn't actually earn promotion?
Or do the bottom ZPL have their blushes saved since the ZL1 winner is unable to come up?

No one will go down, unless they ask for it this year. Promotion/Relegation comes in next year.
Or have I missed something.

Completely agree with this. Personally I think the grand final winner will either be Dudley or Suns however if the likes of Warners Bay, Mayfield, Kotara & Swansea are to have any chance they will need to finish in that 3rd place position.

If you finish last in a 12 team competition you should be relegated no matter what.... Azzurri ZL1 might go and play somewhere else? Their socials do indicate they label themselves as FC Novacastria. Maybe they could just play as FC Novocastria and stay under the Azzurri banner to allow the both to stay in the competition.
I ?with card hungry referees around finals time.
I reckon they give fewer cards in the finals, especially reds.
Maybe it?s the bigger crowds, but I reckon they?re a bit less likely in the semis

ZL1 Azzurri play at Smith Park and from my understanding have no real desire to leave. Smith Park has already been deemed by the joint zones as unacceptable for ZPL, which is literally the whole reason ZPL Azzurri play at Hexham currently.
Just a conversation point worth consideration.

I?m hearing there is a push for the new Myer Park facility.
Darling St were brilliant hosts last year.

Agree on Darling St, but with the work they have going on it might not be available. Myers Park set up is good with the stands, but the playing surface needs time.
Magic Park is a good venue, and so is Adamstown
On Promotion/relegation for 2024"
As of next year if a ZL team goes into Newfm the Joint Interdistrict Zones will work with any promoted club to find an appropriate position within the all age competitions for any displaced third team.
What happens if a ZL team doesnt want to go up?
