Dudley are smoking the pipe in Third and Reserve Grade.
The attacking threat of the Suns should pose Dudley some problems in Firsts.

Correct. 3-1 twice in the space of a couple of weeks in the league and Australia Cup. Kotara haven?t managed to find that mojo again consistently, although when WB beat them a couple of weeks back they buried a goal that may be goal of the season across all teams. An unbelievable hit from just outside the box.

Running football clubs isn't an easy thing to do. It's getting harder and harder to find people who are prepared to put in their own time to do so. Some clubs might benefit from having a junior pathway into senior football. While some clubs might find it better for them to just focus on senior football.
The reality is that there is a much larger pool of kids 18 and below playing football than there is 18 and above. Therefor you cannot have all clubs with juniors and seniors because there simply isn't enough teams.
Minmi obviously do a great job managing juniors and seniors, but that shouldn't put preference to them over a club that doesn't.
Just my opinion.

Have to give a bit of credit to the Suns. At the start of the year all the focus was on Dudley and how they had possibly assembled one of the best ZPL teams we have ever seen. And for the most part they have lived up to that billing however it looks like they may just be pipped at the final hurdle. Definitely very little margin for error if you want to win this competition.

Tough year for some clubs as a whole.
Minmi and Westlakes finishing off on least amount of points overall.
Gotta ask the question.Should some clubs go down, to be a bit more competitive over all grades
I understand that injuries and work commitments play a part of results at times too. So does players backing up each week.
Can make retaining players tough to, losing all the time. Doesn’t always motivate players upbeat on retuning.
Every club has there reasons.
At the end of the day it’s not all about winning. But it is nice.

We at Westlakes are quite happy with how we have performed this season, especially the second half. Thirds have come from getting smashed by more than 5 each week to being competitive as well as winning and drawing games. Reserves couldn?t score a goal in the first half but of the season but have done so regularly since and picked up some wins. Firsts have come forward leaps and bounds scoring a lot more goals and with a lot more wins and points than 2022.
So if you retain your players and work hard to be competitive in all grades and successful in Firsts then you are where you deserve to be.
As for Minmi I can say from first hand experience that the first year is very tough for promoted sides and kudos to them for putting their hand up to play up a division.
Bring on 2024!!

So your reserve grade and third grade are on 15 points combined and you think this is a positive experience for your lower grade players.
Sounds like you need a stint in zone league 1 to improve player development and confidence and then take the step back up into ZPL/northern league in 2 years time.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Sheesh, tough crowd in here! It’s not an easy comp to be a part of. Westlakes are sitting in 7th place which is more than respectable for a club that’s so much further away from the rest of the comp and having to attract players out that way.
They sit above Cardiff on club championship who have been an established club for a long time.
At the end of the day, first grade is the focus of clubs and how success, promotion and relegation is decided. As it currently stands, there’s plenty of first grade sides looking up at Westlakes at the moment who have been around a lot longer.

Not everyone defines success based on points. The only grade you do need to base on points is First grade and we have plenty of those this season.
Maintaining a strong club culture, giving players opportunities to play at this level out this way and working on developing and integrating our juniors into Zone League is what we value. So until we aren?t doing those things we are right where we need to be.
Thanks for your 2 cents worth though.

100% it's not a great thing but adding extra teams was always going to spread the quality. I mentioned at seasons start that it wasn't a good time to go to 12 teams as zone league teams were declining. The stronger clubs are only getting stronger.
The post by Chef, did raise some interesting points. His point about retaining players after an unsuccessful year was correct. 10 teams would have been a better number given the numerous points in other posts made. But in saying that the same could easily be said about the NPL competition.
I will say, well done to Westlakes. Their First Grade have certainly made some leaps forward. As for their lower grades, These things take time. I'm sure if their first grade keep moving forward their lower grades will push forward too with greater depth.

Looking at the results in ZL1 and the sheer dominance of Azzurri and Croatia, along side the struggles of the lower ranked sides in ZL, the federation should take in to consideration promoting the two, in exchange of the teams sitting around that 8th-12th region.
Give the option to either Olympic or University to remain, both of whom seem to have struggled with the transition of leagues, creating a less lop sided and competitive 10 team comp.

The files I looked at on MF website didn’t help me finding an answer on zpl fees. Perhaps a poster who has that knowledge could enlighten us.
Secondary to that though, now the zones & northern appear to be on the same page, what will the outcome be if a zpl champion doesn’t want to go up to NL1 post 2024?

I don't agree that both ZL1 and ZL2 are on same time at the same venue. Surely these grades are big enough for stand alone fixtures, has an all age feel about it. Especially given ZL1 will have the likes of Azzurri, Newcastle Croatia and Norths united involved.

No wonder why I couldn't find the zl1 and 2 finals. Not ideal at all especially for teams that finish 1st. I agree with more teams in the finals but there is a feel it will drag on too long.
I'm sure they could have got 3 options for venues. Myers Park could have hosted one, I feel Southern united deserves the opportunity to host zl2 as they finished so far in front of everyone else and it would be a little consolation for all the travelling they have done this year.

Warners are the only team who managed to come away with a win at Dudley Park this season. I don’t think any other team even managed to claim a point off the thistles on their home turf. It will be a tight contest but I think the Bay can pull off the upset again.
In the Tiger battle Mayfield have beaten Kotara twice already this season and even though it will be close I expect them especially at home on Mayfield Park to go and make it 3 wins in a row over their namesake.

I think the finals series is going to be great. The new format evens things out and makes it much more fair in ressies and thirds particularly. No longer does the "home" team when you aren't playing at your ground come into it. The top sides are rewarded with weeks off and second chances. Lower placed teams that make the big dance in this format will be thoroughly deserved.

The following question is for the joint zone committee.
Can someone please fix the player finals qualification process? It's a debacle....
Every year the same posts get raised about teams stacking players. The only way to fix this is by tightening the rules.
Correct me if I'm wrong. But the current rule means players that start 66% of a higher grade CANNOT START a lower grade in the finals, BUT they can come off the bench. This 66% refers to the total number of games. So if a first grader only plays 10 games all year, all in first grade he can play in any grade come finals time. RIDICULOUS
How about we make the 66% rule apply to competing in the lower grade match full stop. Further to that the 66% rule apply to players who have played a total of 6 games or more.
I think you will find a rule change will make it a much fairer playing field.

it is 66% of their games and a said player can only drop one grade to be on the bench.
I have said for years this system is faulty and needs to be tightened, coming off the bench without playing a game in that grade is the problem, there needs to be some sort of qualification to the grade.

The old way wasn?t the worst being you had to play 5 of last 7 games in that grade to qualify and if you played 4 and 3 you qualify the highest grade and the grade you qualify in for the finals you can?t play under that even if it?s on the bench. Pretty simple

Hopefully Mayfield and Kotara goes the distance to pens tomorrow and it’s a very physical and draining contest

Harsh is an understatement. The amount of challenges that flew in all day from either side and then to give a red card for something so innocuous at 2-0 with 10 mins to go, knowing that ends his season is a joke. Didn’t speak to one Dudley player or supporter after the game that thought it was a red.

Yeah great crowd and awesome atmosphere. Funny, I thought Dudley’s better chances were before the send off. Their best chance was just before Suns got the 2nd goal. At it’s 1-1 a totally different game.
The football was pretty good and there were some fierce tackles which is expected in this clash.
My comment about the red card - no malice in my opinion. He was going for the ball as he does fifty times a game, but got it wrong. He’s not the sort of player to do that deliberately based on what I’ve seen of him. The bloke rides tackles all game and just gets on with it. Not a dirty player at all, but I reckon he got this tackle slightly wrong and the rest is history.
It’d be a shame if he misses the GF. Don’t know anybody who wish that on him or anyone else

It was the least malice challenge all day. Everyone knows the player and person he is. Was literally trying to get his foot behind the ball and the player was in his blind spot and steps in the back of his ankle.
I can understand that if it was a tackle with intent then you don’t deserve to play the next game, but it’s just not right. I don’t think anyone can honestly say that in those circumstances that a red should be issued.
The only other time that he’s been sent off in his 8 seasons at the club was when he was given a yellow card and the ref had marked him down for his brothers earlier yellow card and subsequently wrongly sent off. He’s simply not that kind of player.
Yes, the miss from Dudley followed by second goal at the other end was a big turning point. That knocked the wind out of Dudley and the crowd.

Suns coloured glasses on here. Innocuous and least malice challenge of the day? Those comments suggest you don't think it even warranted a yellow.
He went studs up to win the ball after losing it, missed the ball and his studs collected the Dudley player half way up the back of his lower leg. To suggest he just tried to get his foot behind the ball and just stood on the back of Dudley players ankle is rubbish. There's a photo on the Dudley boys chat showing the stud marks half way up the players calf.
I agree it may not have been a straight red, but to suggest it was innocuous is incorrect. He's obviously not that sort of player we all know that, but with the mistimed studs up challenge, he put himself in that position and the refs eye, and as we all know that?s football.

Never said it wasn’t a yellow. A yellow is the most it should have been. All that I’ve been clear about is that it was not a red which we both agree on, along with what seems everyone else I’ve spoken to.
And I’ve seen the photo and that hasn’t changed my opinion. So yeah, yellow card but a red card no? And a red card knowing it makes someone miss a grand final? No. We all play this game for fun, nobody deserves to have that opportunity taken away from them in a circumstance like that.
At the end of the day there was worse challenges in that game that were given yellows and rightly so. The fact this one challenge was given a red does not sit well with me whatsoever. That’s my opinion with Suns glasses or not. I can show you the messages received from multiple Dudley players and coaches that all said it wasn’t deserving of a red if you’d like too.

I think what a lot of people outside of Dudley and Suns don’t realise is that the playing group on both sides have quite a few mates between them. Many have played together over the years. Most of the animosity comes from outside the fence.
The two clubs have been the strongest two clubs for years and play hard, but there’s certainly no bad blood on the field.

Didn?t see the game so can?t really comment on the challenge but sounds like a fair few people (including those not involved with the Suns) agree that this wasn?t a red card. Will the association or referees reverse the decision to allow one of the more influential players in the competition to play the Grand Final? Would be a much different game without him.

However a bit of credit to Warners Bay they are the only team to have won at Lydon this season so they obviously have the capability.
My prediction is a tight contest with a sole goal separating the teams. The winner will be from a set piece.

You must have your eyes painted on. Dudley were awful and what a disappointing end to the season finishing up with zero silverware especially after last seasons efforts.
Warners Bay defended well, waited for the chances to present themselves and took them. I think they will give Suns a game next weekend. Credit to the Panthers though. Second time they have won at Lydon this season so today was definitely no fluke.

Well the Suns were always going to go into the GF as clear favourites whoever they faced and the last few recent matchups have shown Dudley dont have what it takes to beat them so its good that a different team will actually get a crack at it now.

Missed so many? I can only recall one clear cut chance which drew a great save from the WB keeper. Other than that they never looked like scoring. WB had two chances and took them both.
The football all round was a bore fest. I know it was hot, but I expected way better from both teams but it just didn?t happen.

Dutch courage? All I did was reply to a very boring comment from another poster who again felt the need to single me out. Never do I post about other clubs misfortunes or bag out other clubs which is unlike a few of the keyboard warriors in here.
It was a fantastic weekend of football and a massive effort from everyone involved at the Suns to put on such a top weekend. The first time an event like that has been put on to host all grand finals at the one facility. The work from all our volunteers to put on the weekend was huge. The main pitch was in brilliant condition over the two days, just unfortunately couldn't have the second pitch the same due to the traffic on there.
The behaviour from everyone over the weekend was great and no incidents to report which is awesome considering there would have been close to 3,000 over the two days.
Congratulations to all clubs on another great ZPL season, especially Dudley who were so consistent across the three grades all year. Unfortunately for them, they'd be disappointed that didn't continue through to September, but a top season still.
Well done to Warners Bay on getting to the last day of the season also and to Kotara for their win to stop a near perfect day for us. Super proud of our club for the season, it was very special to have all three grades there on grand final day.
Thoroughly looking forward to the offseason now! Excited to see what comes in season 2024!

It was a very well run day so credit must go to your club Lofty and congratulations on winning 2 of the 3 games.
I thought the main game wasn’t exactly a classic but grand finals very rarely are in all fairness. The opening goal was worthy of winning any big match though. Suns deserved the win and I don’t think got quite enough credit just how strong and ruthless they were especially in the 2nd half of the season.
As for Warners Bay I can see why they don’t lose too many games. They are very workmanlike and defend quite well. I think if they are to take the next step though and win a major trophy they need to introduce or develop a little more polish especially in the final third. Congratulations to them on a great season though.
Suns deserved the win and I don’t think got quite enough credit just how strong and ruthless they were especially in the 2nd half of the season.
Preach it brother. They’re just relentless. They may have been a shade unlucky in ressies too, in what was a very even match.
Considering last year’s captain out for the bulk of the season, Aden P out for a while injured, A Tserapas out for a fe games injured then away, it’s an impressive season. All the talk early was about Dudley and rightly so, but minor premiers and GF winners with I think only one loss all season…that’s a super season.
Re the ground, Suns did exceptionally well with what they had to work with. I hope the club cashed in, as there was no shortage of fans there both days.

No issues with Croatia or any other club coming to ZPL. This year we saw Olympic, Minmi and Uni come up. There were no complaints then and there won't be with whatever decision is made.
There's inevitably going to be plenty of movement next year and the following one would assume with the restructure. All of those decisions are out of our hands as clubs, we will play whoever is in the comp.
Plenty of clubs have been promoted without finishing first. If Croatia do next season, I highly doubt they will be the last.
Croats should go up if even if 1st also went up. I bet they'll recruit even stronger for next year.

It was very long I thought. And with the weather gods being very favourable too. We had one washout during the season. With no spare weekends, I think it could become very tricky to get through and tough on players when you have a season with a few mid week games.
I didn't mind the 5 team finals series. Definitely a better reward for the teams finishing top 3. Especially in the lower grades. The home/away finals series for ressies and thirds is actually stupid.

Hard to see Terrace rejoining. They have a very good committee, but it didn't finish well for them in 2022 with a lack of numbers. I can definitely see them back in zone football at some stage, but 2024 maybe a little early. For the competitions sake, I hope I am wrong.

And even if they are, are people aware that from next season promotion relegation comes in? I know a lot of people on here have a small club mind and are afraid of stepping up comfortable to stay where they are but others have a bit of ambition, like Cooks Hill and New Lambton who had to get themselves promoted with more than just on-field success.

It?s not that hard Newcastle Football, why would you wait till December, you will shut down for Chrissy 2 weeks later which will mean nothing till mid Jan.

Must be waiting to see what new clubs apply and then make up the divisions. Rumor that Terrace and Charlestown are wanting to come back. Also with Azzurri ZL1 moving to belmont/mt Hutton and playing under a new name all 3 would have To start at the bottom zone.
Might be looking at 3 comps of 12 teams.

My mail is Cooks Hill zl2 have moved to Charlestown, happy to be corrected if not true. So that isn't an extra team.

Can anyone confirm the Zone Leagues structure and league format for 2024 before I close this thread and start the 2024 ones?

The numbers per league are, but not the names of the leagues. Promotion and Relegation and new names of the leagues start in 2024

I would be highly surprised if 5 new clubs joined zone football next season. I have heard of one club joining next season, but intending to join and competing is a different thing.
Hard to see Terrace rejoining. They have a very good committee, but it didn't finish well for them in 2022 with a lack of numbers. I can definitely see them back in zone football at some stage, but 2024 maybe a little early. For the competitions sake, I hope I am wrong.
I hear Terrace have appointed the bloke that used to coach Stocko.
Big catchment up there and a strong football history.
They?ll have a few RAAF personnel to bolster their ranks.
There?ll be some substance to them

Would have been a good appointment about 5 years ago. The Les shine has been and gone for years.
