I can't deny his had a Impact and help turn our season around. The "one man team" comment ticked me off, as I said earlier it's insulting to the 10 other players, my team mates of course I'm going to stick up for them.
Lez and Bobby coming in with Todd and the return of Wes has definitely strengthened us, We lost some very good and experienced players from last year in Andrew and Mat Darr along with Sean Clerk they were always going to be hard to replace.
We done pretty well in replacing those players but up front we were lacking a little Bobby and Lez helped there.

In Wet conditions today Westlakes were hard to get past with the contest going all the way until the 85th min. Nelson Bay scoring in the 30th min from a FK. Clarke the Nelson Bay GK saved the bay with 2 point blank saves in a row stopping certain equalisers. The Westlakes back lines offside trap was working very effective today and the game was finished off in the 85th min with an easy cutback tap in. The wild cats players played great considering a fair few of them backed up.

Yeah that weather was something.. trying to warm up for first grade was pretty pointless, gave up after 5 minutes and went back in and put a jumper on lol. We had 3 players starting with fresh legs in first grade, a couple including our starting CAM were in their third game of the day. The players there all tried their hearts out and were bitterly disappointed not to get a result out of the game. Especially in the second half we had you guys under the pump for long periods but just could not find the net on the day. Hoping soon we can start to turn solid performances from our last few games into some points.

There's been teams in zl1 in the past that would drop their heads if they went a couple of goals down - west lakes definitely aren't one of them. They always put in to the end so credit to them. If half of the teams in the comp had half their ticker they would be happy. A couple of unlucky moments when they hit the bar and had a couple of shots saved from close range

Well done to Morisset. Surprised it's taken them this long to get a point as they are definitely not the weakest side we have played and have battled out every game. I think they'll cause a few problems now for teams up the table chasing a top 4 spot!

Yeah props to Morriset, this is a far stronger team than they had last year and I can't fathom how unlucky they've been. Love you.

Took 9 points away from Westlakes today, for our first time in ZL1. Much needed after our pathetic effort as a club, being totally out enthused by Morisset mid-week, allowing them to take the lot.

Credit to both 1st grade opponents. Morisset game was very ordinary but they showed greater commitment. Westlakes today kept fighting until the end and although we should have scored many more, they kept in the contest.

All the best to both clubs moving fwd.

1sts 2-2
Morisset coming out on top early and scoring in the first 10 mins from a delightful chip and putting Nelson Bay under pressure.
Nelson Bay equalizing in the 65th min catching the Morisset defence with a throw in goal.
The game started to heat up with the tackles flying in and adding spice to the game with the ref waiting until the 70th min to give the first yellow.
From the 70th to the 80th challenges and cards were flying. Morisset took the lead back from a header catching the bay out with there own throw in set piece.
Nelson Bay equalized in the 84th minute scoring from a free kick just outside the box which was first given as a penalty then overturned by the linesmen.
A couple of players were lucky to stay on the pitch especially from Nelson Bay. Morisset will cause teams a lot more headaches with the football they are playing.

One of our better performances of the season beating Kotara 4-0 at Jesmond Park. Should have been more which is pleasing without our most dangerous attacking player. Could be mistaken but don't think our gk had a save to make. Real test will be tonight in lower grades as we have a dozen players unavailable.

The performance and points were much needed after being bent over @ Beresfield on Sunday. They really do deserve promotion in my opinion. Seem to always turn up hungry and have quality over most of the park and seem to be able to cover the couple of weaknesses they do have.

Only been there this year for the first time in years, but certainly wouldn't miss the Sunday drive to cramped sheds and postage stamp field that tapers off that badly it should be re-layed. I do enjoy the crowds "enthusiasm" though. May have been heightened on Sunday as it was an emotional day for them and suspect that may have brought in additional numbers. I suspect they revel in the above and wouldn't have it any other way.

Onto referees.... Felt for the young bloke on Sunday. He did his best and had what seemed like half of the Bero community on his back when the game got a tad fiery. Thought he did ok which I know wasn't the general consensus but ill stand alone. Otto (I think that's his name) did last night and is just about the best in and around our division. Really helps.

Good luck to Bero and GS in the run-in. I know how much promotion means to you both. Our aim is to see one of you in the semis which would mean we've been a success, albeit an inconsistent one.

Yeah we're happy to admit we had 1st graders play in the lower grades which undoubtedly helped our performances. As mentioned in previous post, we had many out (had said 12 but ended up being more) and when our squad is now down to 40 it makes it tough when 12-15 of those are missing. Thanks to our all Age M grade players that were also called upon.

Didn't see the 3rd grade game but the reggies one was entertaining. How the instigator stayed on the park is beyond me and all I can say is initial incident must have been missed. Feel for Kotara bloke who did see red as got wrong man, what he did coming in 3rd didn't warrant it. It was interesting to see the reaction of the instigator when his teammate was sent, he knew his actions were the catalyst. No complaints with our bloke seeing red for retaliation. Whilst a couple of red ones (to the correct people) were probably warranted. With the officials clearly unsure of exactly what had happened, maybe throwing a few yellows to everyone involved may have been the go.

C'mon man
18-07-2014, 11:10 AM
I agree with yellows should have been issued and a few minutes everyone would have calmed down....i was on the field and totally missed the intial incident but our player didnt need to come in like that - it was his first ever red card and he was gutted afterwards as it was a vital game for us
in the end it was a competitive game both sides had chances you took yours we didnt

Westlakes v Bero

Bero won every grade. Reserves may have been 1 nil and firsts was I think 5-1. In firsts the ref just suffocated the game and made it quite boring to watch. Bero should have been given a penalty in the first half and westlakes one in the second. Bero were pretty tidy, a handy team and it was probably unfortunate they didnt have a bigger lead at half time. The little midfielder for Bero, number 8, was the pick for me.

Westlakes v Bero
3rds 1-3
Reserves 0-1

Bero got a goal in the first few minutes from a sloppy pass into midfield from WL, then a nice run from the forward who beat a couple of blokes then made a tidy finish, game was pretty even from there.

Firsts 1-5
0-1 at half time, Bero maybe shoulda had that penalty, hard for me to say as I'm biased, I thought the tackle got the ball but I wouldn't have been surprised if it was given as the angle he came in did look untidy. Bero scored again early in the second half, we had what we all thought was an obvious penalty and keeper probably lucky not to get a card from a 1v1. Nabbed a scrappy goal off a corner to take it back to 2-1. Game felt like a fair contest for the majority but the wheels fell off for us in the last 15-20 minutes and they blew out the scoreline a bit grabbing 3 goals. Was an enjoyable game though, as pv4 said, Bero looked like quite a tidy team and something for our new team to work towards.

What happened in Suns WB game?

Warners bay scored in the first couple of minutes and suns equalised not long after. Suns got two more towards the end of first half to be up 3-1 HT. sexy half suns had chance after chance. Some were taken, some weren't. WB had a played fairly sent off for a silly challenge on the penalty spot - the penalty was converted after the first attempt was hilariously shanked before the whistle was blown. That made it 6 or 7. Then a few more goals to make it 9.
Really solid performance in a must win game!

There sure is, I'm pretty sure Boz has the format on how points are given. I'm not positive on how it works but 1st grade wins are worth more than 3rd grade wins, I'm sure you could find the info on the Newcastle Footballs site.

FYI we've come close but from memory I don't think we've won it, Wallsend shat it in last year and I think Suns took it out the year before last, I could be wrong but.

I don't want to rain on the parade of other clubs but do that many within actually care too much about the club championship? Sure it's nice if it compliments other achievements and it goes hand in hand obviously with success across the grades as a club, but surely it does not compare with a minor or major premiership? Or does it?

To offer a genuine argument against it being the basis for promotion, in 2012 we won the club championship on the back of an undefeated reserve grade (I think ours and Mussy were both undefeated) but although making a good run for the 4, we missed out on the semis in 1st grade on the final day of the season.

It was slightly embarrassing to receive the trophy as the best performing club and to have gotten promotion would have been nothing short of ridiculous.

Anyway, there my thoughts - happy to be shot down.

Interesting run-in for these last 2 semi final spots!

I tend to agree with your points. I don't think it's fair for promotion to be based on club championship. Although, with ZPL & ZL1 having three grades that are all performing well, it is a nice achievement for the club. I play Suns ressies and if we are to not make the GF or lose the GF, I won't be looking back and saying, but hey, we were club champions (if that were to happen) and feel great about it.
I think we are all here to win grand finals. We all know winning minor premierships is a great achievement, but you really want to be winning that last game of the season!

Shaping up to be some very exciting fixtures in the last two weeks for finals places!

I agree that Club Championship shouldnt decide promotion, it should be who crosses the finish line first (in first grade) in the regular season as that team is the most consistent team for the year. I use Bero as an example. If they finish first, they deserve promotion and shouldn't be penalised for weaker lower grades which are affecting their club championship position.

Also in regards to the importance of the club championship, it is a nice reward for those clubs that show consistency throughout their grades. With three grades, it is unlikely you can win the club championship and not have your first grade in the semis (not impossible but very unlikely).

It's going to interesting. Kotara, N Bay and Suns all still have a realistic shot at 4th place.

Kotara have a tough game against Suburbs next weekend still chasing top spot and promiton, Bay tough one away to Jesmond and Suns at home to Morisset. You would think favourites in those three are Suburbs, Jesmond and Suns? If that happens, it comes down to Kotara v Suns on final day with Bay against Bero fighting for top spot also.. It's close and exciting, may the best team win.

Hi Lukee_f, i dont think your figures are correct. Sporting pulse is showing Kotara with 32 - 24 (Diff +8) and Suns 33 - 29 (Diff +4). If Suns win 2-0, we will have equal goal difference but Suns will have better goals for (35 vs 32) so you Suns will progress on better goals for.

You sir are correct. Definitely forgot to add the score from yesterdays result (SP wasn't updated an hour ago when I looked lol). That answers the question anyway. Kotara can afford to draw or lose by 1 goal and still progress to the final 4.

Serious comment? Surely there wasn't much thought with your response?
It's great for higher league clubs to allow Zone League clubs use their facilities for the grand final. Why would NBN want to host their grand final at a zone league club? It's bad enough they have to go out to Edgy this year.

Why does that matter? Pretty sure a few years ago suns hosted the grand final at Magic Park with no grades in the gf and it was a fantastic day. About 30 suns boys were there cheering on the other games too from the start until end of the day.
Besides that, it's not just about first grade. There's a good chance that Kotara and suns will have more teams in the gf than anyone else that day..

I have no doubts you guys will host a great day.
Yes I agree it's not all about 1st grade but they are the main grade, so why should Suns get the advantage of a "home" GF when other clubs have finished above them to deserve a advantage. If you want to go off all 3 grades then should it not the go to the Club Championship winners?

Let me point out I've got no gripe in you guys hosting it and I'm glad it's a ZL1 club hosting it instead of a NPL club, just purely bringing it up for conversational sake as others may think along the lines of what I've stated.

Suns did a great job hosting a few years back it's a great venue. If it was done the "fair" way we would have to play on a postage stamp or on a concrete dust bowl. The seasons show piece should be played on the best ground available and it will be.

These kinds of things are said every year. I don't see why it gives the suns, if they make it, such a big advantage. It's in a central location to everyone and if bero were to win and it meant they host the gf, well what an ordinary place to end the biggest day of the season that we all look forward to. My prediction is that the grand final ground will be a neutral venue for the first grade fixture anyway and that's quite fair.
I'm sure all clubs that were keen, applied for the gf. Those that didn't get it this year only have a better chance next year. I know the guys in the suns committee and around the club will make sure it's a great day for all that attend regardless whether any suns teams are there.

Let's just get back to the football chat anyway because these kind of pointless discussions are exactly that. Especially when there's such an exciting final round of football to be played. First grade has two teams fighting for club promotion and first place. While three teams are in contention for the final place in the top 4. Good luck to all.

harsh. I'd bet all of Bero would have a blast hosting their own GF. Not forgetting that nelson bay, weston has hosted ID GFs before which was a long* travel for most.

On the other hand happy with Broady hosting cause can travel by pushy.

I didn't mean for this to come across in a bad way about Bero. I'm sure whoever and wherever it was hosted, that club/s would do their very best job.

My main points that I was responding to were the fact that someone said the ZPL GF shouldn't be at a NPL ground..
Secondly, that because the Suns might not make the finals in first grade, they shouldn't have the rights to host the GF..

I seriously can't understand why there would be any serious complaints that the GF is being played at Magic Park..

Anyway...

Any predictions for the weekend?

Saturday is promotion day..
N Bay v Bero - Dolphin Messenger seems to think N Bay will park the bus to ruin Bero's hopes of finishing first. I know if I was playing for N Bay I'd be chasing the win so that I could play finals football! I still think Bero will come out on top in this one. (Bero 2+)
Westlakes v Suburbs - Lakes with next to nothing to play for after Morissets win last week moved them 3 points clear with a much better GD. Suburbs will win comfortably here hoping that Bero drop points at the bay. (Suburbs 4+)
Morisset v Jesmond - Pretty much a dead rubber. Morisset can't advance higher up the ladder and Jesmond will be looking for a good performance going into the finals - unless they're wanting to rest players and keep them fit and save the trip out there.. (Jesmond in a close one)
'Potential' 4th place play-off
Kotara v Suns - The results on Saturday could impact the mood in first grade here.. A N Bay win rules both these guys out. A draw or Bero win opens the door for either team to take 4th place. Kotara in the box seat here and can afford to even lose this game and take 4th. Suns must win by 2 goals or more to take 4th. hopefully the rain stays away and then depending on the Saturday results, a big day on sunday!

Huge weekend of games to finish the regular season..
Obviously us Gardo boys are looking to beat Westlakes and can only hope that Nelso can get Bero to drop some points (of which a win for Nelso can secure them a semis spot).. If we win, but Bero still win, then that will be the third year in a row that we have come second by a single, solitary point..
Very interesting that the minor premiership will be decided on Saturday, I imagine there will be a lot of texts or checks to the foz for results on Sat arvo..

Mo-town will be looking to spoil Jesmond's finish to the season even though Jezzo will definitely get third or fourth..
While Kotara vs Suns is going to be a cracker of a match out at Nesbitt, Suns will be hurting a bit after their loss last week but are techincally still able to pinch 4th spot depending on goals and other results..

Good luck to all teams, bring on the weekend!!

PREDICTED SUNDAY WEATHER
On Sunday, the deluge unleashes on the east coast as the low moves towards it. If you live between southeast QLD and Victoria’s East Gippsland, now is time to get the washing and gardening done or stock up on your DVDs and board games as Sunday will be a super soaker. Widespread falls of at least 25mm and as much as 100mm are forecast for some parts of the coast between Port Macquarie and the Gold Coast. Brisbane and Sydney are likely to see their heaviest rain in at least five months.

what happens if we cant play sunday at Kotara??

3rds 1-5 Jesmond comfortable winners.
Reserves 4-1 Morisset boys did well for the win. Good game of football.
Firsts 6-2 Morisset came out of the sheds fired up and got 4 goals in about 15-20 mins. Jesmond got a penalty and another from a free kick near half way (straight through our keepers legs). Morisset finally switched back on and scored another two. Missed a few chances and in the end it was a pretty solid win. 15 points from a possible 18 taken from Jesmond for the year. Its a good feeling.

Mor 6 Jes 2.

Smashed us out of the blocks 4-0 inside 20 min. One harsh handball, one may have been offside (although their club linesman overall was very good and fair) but saying that our keeper made a couple of saves he had no right to make. Could have been anywhere from 2 to 6 inside that 20min. Some tactical changes and a substitution and from there game was competitive with pretty even chances at both ends but damage had already been done in the early stages.

If perform like that on weekend, no matter who we play they will be rubbing their hands together!

Onto who we play - have Kotara and Suns put their heads together on when they might be playing their blockbuster for a spot in the semis?

I haven't heard anything other than whispers so far. I don't think there is any need for ressies and thirds to play, as positions can't be changed (unless Suns thirds were to win 9-0 making them minor premiers haha - but that's just a little unrealistic). So I think just first grade will play, hopefully tomorrow night? I did hear something about possibly tonight to give the winning team more rest for the semis, but the fact I haven't heard anything yet, it doesn't seem like tonight will be happening.

Will keep the foz posted if I hear anything.

Rates up with a few years ago that Week 1 of the finals Jesmond Reggie's played a knockout game at Muswellbrook and 1sts played the same day at Barnsley and then the second week we were forced to move the 1st Grade Home game to 1pm to allow the opposition players to attend a wedding. This has been bought up in conversation a few times over the last few weeks. A few of the senior players are planning on having meeting in the next few weeks to discuss the future of the club I'm sure this will be on the agenda

This is true..

Burbs have every right to revisit their previous decision around promotion and make a call based on the best interest of their club for 2015. I don't think anyone would begrudge them taking the opportunity for promotion if it were given to them.

It's such a rubbish decision from the federation. Not much can be done about it now though.

The Federation have nothing to do with it. Zone Leagues are administered by Newcastle Football on behalf of the three zones.

Federation, association, Newcastle football.. Same thing. The point was that the 'decision makers' decision to give preference to ZL2, rather than ZL1 was poor. I understand there weren't a lot of options, but that's just my opinion.

wouldnt imagine them looking the best with the rain we received this week, both grounds seemed to be called off pretty quickly. but maybe an exception will be made for the semis.

will only be called off if ground is deemed to be unsafe for play.. it has all summer to recover from being chopped up

I've just heard from our president as he was leaving Jesmond Park and it's still pretty bad, although seems to be improving as what he described sounds better than what a group of us witnessed last night. As was stated by Bero, we'll be looking to get it going as long as it's not dangerous and obviously approved by the referee.

Having spoken to the powers-to-be at the association a couple of times this week, note there could be an email go out later in the day with more information for the consideration of hosting clubs.

FYI Garden Suburbs - we are going to inspect the ground tomorrow afternoon and will aim to keep you posted.

3rd Grade Result From Bero
Kotara 4 - Nelson bay 0

Nelson Bay battled well and had some chances, but in the end it was a relatively comfortable win for Kotara.

Bero played liked bero. Never going to be a good match when one team clearly isn't there to play football. Tactics back fired for them and suns missed a decent 1 on 1 chance at the end. How bero ended with 11 men I'll never know. Next week should be fun.
