These types of events aren't about the music Stanny. If it's about the music you are better off going to a smaller / indoor venue.
Yeah its about doing pills and shit but. Still a good lineup would be nice. At least Download looks good and we have the hella mega tour coming as well

I'd be impressed if they could pull off their recorded sound live in an open venue. Getting the mix right not to mention all the fx working would be a nightmare.

Yeah, muddiness in particular can be a real issue if the venue isn't right..

And this is the Edwards / Rodgers track the Sugar Hill Gang used for Rappers Delight.
Man... It's just such a good bass line.. haha
There is a property out near Sandy Hollow (that I go past every few weeks for work) that is named Sugar Hill, and I always end up getting this bass line stuck in my head for hours after driving by..

I've got a lot of respect for Sugar Hill Gang but I really can't see that being an enjoyable experience for a few thousand teenagers to try and connect with 2 of the 3 original members, both of which would be 60+ years old at a guess, of a band that blew up and then fell away very quickly during the formative years of Hip Hop.
That said, with Supergrass, Darude, Kelis and the Veronica's to an extent, they are definitely catering to a middle aged crowd. So maybe they'll have a better idea of why Sugar Hill Gang are as important as they are.
I'm guessing the older bands will play during the day or something.

Kelis has plenty of good songs, but that crowd will just want to hear Milkshakes and then leave as well.

I was going to ask if that is all she would play, but didn't want to appear ignorant or to be bagging out on the festival.. haha.. (Well, no more than usual)

Kelis had a great run when she was working with The Neptune's (Pharrell and Chad from N.E.R.D.) but I assume those kids will only know her as the Milkshake Girl.

Big Bank Hank Jackson passed away in 2014 and yes the remaining two are in their 60's. One of my friends in the 70's to early 80's was right into rap / hip hop when it all started - I can't remember the other bands names at the time but the Sugar Hill Gang were sort of viewed as being too commercial and far from innovators in a genre that wasn't expected to last any longer than the Punk Movement [2 years or so]
I guess they got that wrong.
I liked the Sugar Hill Gang at the time but was more into Talking Heads, B-52's, and Joy Division at the time.
I agree 60 year olds at Groovin the Moo would be a bit disconnected from the crowd or teens - but the fans rarely have anything in common with bands other than being a pill away from an overdose.

There was a scene trying to break on to the radio with little success, then the Sugar Hill Gang came out with a really radio friendly version of Hip Hop that went big. So the scene didn't like that the first one to take off wasn't really representative of what was happening at the time.
That said, it was still what was needed to get Hip Hop on to the radio and help it become a viable career, so it still deserves all of its praise.
Hip Hop is actually fascinating in its formative years, it kind of latched on to other music styles (because of sampling) and then had multiple scenes running separately for a while and it took decades to finally form one giant scene, which is the juggernaut that is currently on top of the music chain.

Bands only do Festivals if they are on their way out or got conned by their management / label to do them possibly in support of a new act they are trying to break / promote.
These types of events have been a shit show since before Woodstock 69 and I doubt that much has changed.
As for prices they are out of control but it's probably due to insurance / security and every other prick putting their fingers into the ever shrinking pie.

No. But I avoided them as a young bloke as well Stanny - not my thing - would much prefer a more intimate setting like a pub / small theatre.
The bands hate these events and when people don't enjoy what they are doing - their performances usually suffer because of it.

But for $200 you could probably go see 3 side shows of the band's you want to see on better stages?
That'ss what I used to do when BDO went above $120 per ticket. 3 X $40 side shows was a better investment IMO.
Those Download tickets make Splendor look reasonably priced. That's a worry.

Actually I just checked, and...
A) the side shows aren't even in Sydney. Download must demand exclusivity in their contracts.
B) the tickets for Deftones are $100, which is also ridiculous. So you'd only get 2 sideshows.
Thankfully I've seen all the bands on that lineup that I like in their prime. So I'll save my money. But I feel for any kids coming through wanting to see live music. Gotta take out a personal loan just to go see a few bands.

I mentioned this in the famous dead peoples thread but thougth it worth noting here.
It's 40 years today since Ian Curtis of Joy Division chose to leave this mortal coil.
Glass - A classic example of the raw, driving energy this band created, polished off with Martin Hannett (https://www.nme.com/blogs/nme-blogs/joy-division-unknown-pleasures-martin-hannett-producer-2508983)'s visionary production.
His mixing and subliminals are the icing on the cake.

Stanny... I've gotta say.. That was pretty damn good..
Some nice meat-and-potatoes chunky metalcore.. Reminds me a lot of some older Hatebreed (but with a bit more production value)..
The whole time I was listening, I was waiting for the melodic sing-a-long whiney chorus, and it didn't come!!!
Meanwhile whilst working from home I've been re-visiting some classic Swedish melodic death metal..
In Flames before they "did an Opeth" and went soft - not that there is necessarily anything wrong with it, I just prefer their harder stuff..
Production obviously isn't the greatest (it was 1999 after all), but there is just something about the riffs and tone of the guitars that are really evocative to me..

This got recommended to me on Spotify about 6 months ago, I'd heard of the band but never really listened to their stuff.
This version of the song is amazing, such a good quality local band that I've been missing out on over the past years.

Jeeeeez mate, where you been? hahaha..
I would have thought you would have been all over them.. (Admittedly, i really only got in to and enjoyed their first album, Themata)..
Tis a good day for music..
New song dropped for Silent Planet.. Real dirty and angry.. (I'm pretty sure its all nasty bass.. haha)
No clean vocals, which for me is great, they let that bassist sing too much on the last album..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYIyUiunobk
Also, new album from Between The Buried And Me came out today..
This is the newest clip (that came out today too), got a strange almost 70's prog feel to parts of it.. Going to need a few more listens to take it all in though..
Think they've been partying with some "experimental" stuff during the last few years.. haha

Ahhh mate.. I didn't mean to sound so negative about it..
I think it's the highly glossed production (which isn't necessarily always a bad thing) combined with the standard basic Amity songwriting formula of melody, angry metal riffs, whiny melody, angry riffs and screaming, high clean whinging melody, breakdown for the kids, finish with melody.. etc etc..
In the end, if you enjoy it and really dig it, thats awesome, go for it.. It's just not for me.
(I realise a LOT of the music that I post isn't for everyone, which is fine.. Kind of like Grim with his Disc Golf posts.. hahaha)

From what few singles I've heard, I haven't liked anything after "Count Your Blessings". I absolutely loved their first EP "This Is What The Edge Of Your Seat Is Made For", some good early deathcore..
From where they started to where they are now is just an immense leap in musical style - which some would argue is good. (I wouldn't, haha)

That's just a copout from salty fans on the most part IMO, But then if you don't change it up you get bands like Nickleback who get hated anyway

You reckon? I don't know.. Bands can change their style without being considered sell-outs..
Nickelback, I'm not defending them. I don't rate their music, but they are successful. I don't know who, but someone is buying their fvcking albums..
I would say people (at least, in my circle of friends) hate Nickelback for a lot of reasons, like their style, their songs, their attitude, their crap picture frame clip, their look, the singer and his poodle haircut, being best friends with Pantera but not being heavy, haha the list goes on and on..
People wouldn't necessarily hate on them for sounding the same on every album cause the Foo Fighters are damn successful and pretty widely loved..

Bring me the Horizon got to the top by always jumping off a scene right before it dies out and wherever they end up is almost always the next big thing. Jumped from Deathcore to Postcore to Alternative Hardcore and then to basically Pop Metal on the latest album. They have continued to polarise their older fanbases but keep finding new fans every album.
Whereas bands like Foo Fighters stayed exactly where they started and honed that sound for a few decades. (Although they did just record a Bowie style dance rock album, lmao, so even they got bored of it eventually.)
Both are huge, but took different approaches. I'd say whatever keeps you getting paid is the best way to keep you making music if that's what you want to do.

Well as I said on the Jetstream (or will say when it releases tomorrow morning) I fell down a rabbit hole in the offseason on yewwtube of reaction videos of overseas people to our aussie artists. I am someone whose musical tastes are very wide ranging, but must admit I think I underappreciated at the time how good we had it here in the 80's and 90's with our bands and singers. I was too busy being into TripleJ alternative stuff (and EDM/trance/electronica) at the time to give more than a passing interest to the more rock stuff.
If you want to lose yourself in people being absolutely blown away by John Farnham - search for the reaction videos on his performance of Help that he did live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. I didnt really came across it until recently and Ive never appreciated the vocal range that man has. He really should have been a worldwide star except he didnt want to be away from his family.
Then again, the American record labels apparently "couldnt do anything" with either him or Barnsey. Stupid.

Not actually a musical question per se but who would be the modern-day equivalent of Led Zeppelin or Pink Floyd. Not musically but as the band or performer name on a t-shirt worn by some mong that couldn't name more than three songs by that band or performer.

Definitely bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, Rolling Stones and Nirvana.. Actually, i realise these probably aren't the "modern day" equivalents that you might mean.
Pretty sure they sell shirts like that in your K-Mart or Jay Jays or places like that which are pretty accessible for your average Joe..
It also doesn't help when you see articles online like "the new celebrity trend, band tees!" (google it)
