JETS hired gun Joel Griffiths has taken a lead from actor Adam Sandler in the movie Anger Management to help keep his temper in check.

See your ad here

Griffiths had to bite his tongue after being given a yellow card by referee Chris Beath for an innocuous challenge on Mark Bridge early in the Jets' 2-0 victory over Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday.

The match was the former Golden Boot's second back from a two-game suspension for verbally abusing referee Ben Williams in the dying stages of the 2-all draw with Wanderers in round 17.

That sanction followed a three-week stint on the sideline for a similar incident involving a referee's assistant during his brief spell at Sydney FC last season.

The 34-year-old is one of the more passionate players in the league but has often been guilty of letting his frustration boil over, especially with match officials.

Griffiths confirmed he had attended club-arranged counselling sessions after his latest indiscretion, but he revealed yesterday that his main inspiration came from the slapstick comedy Anger Management, and in particular a scene in which Sandler's therapist instructs him to sing I Feel Pretty from the musical Westside Story. (Which curiously features two street gangs, one of which are The Jets).

"I have been doing some counselling, but I have also been watching the movie Anger Management," he said .

The striker then broke into song for the assembled media, crooning: "I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel pretty and witty and gay."I have been singing that to myself when I step out on to the pitch. That seems to be working," he said.

"The counsellor actually told me to touch my ears, but I thought that might come across a little strange on the Fox Sports coverage."

Jets assistant coach Craig Deans was adamant Griffiths's collision with Bridge did not warrant a yellow card but stopped short of suggesting the striker's reputation had an influence on officials.

"The yellow card to me was very strange," Deans said.

"There were four or five challenges that were far worse in the period leading up to Joel getting the yellow card. Personally, I think it was a bad decision. Credit to Joel, he didn’t let it affect him. He got on with the game.

‘‘Everyone has something they need to work at. For Joel, it is making sure he maintains his discipline.’’

Sunday’s booking was Griffiths’s first yellow in three appearances since arriving at the Jets in January.

Yellow cards were reset to zero at the end of the round.

Although it has been wiped, Griffiths said the booking had forced him to change the way he played.

‘‘It was difficult because playing 70 minutes on a yellow card in wet conditions is quite hard,’’ he said.

‘‘To be honest, the second half I was going out thinking about not getting a yellow card instead of thinking about playing football.

‘‘If I had got another red card, I don’t know how I would have reacted.

‘‘I just have to be smart in the future and accept that I may not get as much latitude as other players.’’

Aside from the card, Griffiths was happy with his first start since returning to the Jets.

He was deployed on the right side of midfield and formed an instant combination with front two Emile Heskey and Adam Taggart.

‘‘We had a couple of wet days last week and really didn’t get on the field to work on our shape,’’ Griffiths said.

‘‘The game was literally the first time together. I thought we jelled quite good, and hopefully it is promising signs with six games to go.’’

Deans, too, was confident the combination would only get better.

‘‘Emile now has three people around him who make very, very good forward runs and are positive with their play,’’ he said. ‘‘The fact that Emile is now getting on the ball and is able to make a killer pass a couple of times . . . I think the partnership between those three plus either Andrew Hoole, Craig Goodwin or James Virgili on the other side is positive.’’

Griffiths was on light duties yesterday after a knock to his ribs but is certain to be right to play Melbourne Heart at Hunter Stadium on Saturday.

‘‘With that 70 minutes under my belt, I can go into the Heart game with a bit of confidence,’’ he said.

Feel the need for this song to break out en mass around Stade de Newy for Griffo this Saturday

He fabulous last night. Once Griff left the ground we looked like shit.

My thoughts exactly. Showed nothing once he was taken off.

Bloke needs to be playing in the centre of the park. Why do we have such a useless pos playing in the centre when we have Griff? Him and Tagz need to combine more for sexy times.

That said, I think re-signing Griffo was one of the worst mistakes the club has made. We are such a disgrace right now, I feel embarrassed seeing him having to put on a Jets jersey. They should let him play in his own jersey to make up for this imo.

World game reporting we are going to offer heskey a new deal.

FFS why are we offering players especially visa players new deals when we have no coach. In a salary capped league the marquee & visa slots are the positions where a good coach can really strengthen the squad where he sees fit, but we seen intent on wrapping up all these players then expecting them to do complete 360 under a new manager.

I really hope our "world class exhaustive coach search" which will probably result in bridges getting the gig is concluded before the memberships go on sale, will make it so much easier to not renew.

Griff speaks...he wants a Gypo overlord....

Griffiths keen to work with Arnold

By JAMES GARDINER
April 25, 2014, 10 p.m.

JOEL Griffiths would love to work under Graham Arnold at the Jets, believing the former Socceroos coach could take his game to new heights.

Arnold has been offered a multi-year deal to coach the Jets and has met with club management twice in the past fortnight.

The 50-year-old is scheduled to hold talks with New Zealand Football next week about the vacant All Whites national team job. But, barring a late and significant play by Sydney, the Jets are firming as favourites to secure the 2012-13 championship-winning coach.

The Jets cleared the decks on Thursday, sacking assistant coach Craig Deans, goalkeeping coach Bob Catlin and performance co-ordinator Karl Dodd.

Clayton Zane is certain to stay as assistant coach, but Arnold is likely to bring in Andrew Clark as performance co-ordinator and John Crawley to work with the keepers.

The trio, along with Phil Moss, steered the Mariners to a championship last season.

Clark, who accompanied Arnold on his aborted mission to J-League club Vegalta Sendai, had great success with veterans Daniel McBreen and Mile Sterjovski.

Griffiths is confident he and David Carney could undergo a similar renaissance.

Both are off contract but are keen to stay and have held preliminary talks with the club.

‘‘I worked under Arnie briefly when he was assistant coach at the Socceroos,’’ Griffiths said.

‘‘My two brothers were at Northern Spirit [with Arnold] and I have a relationship with him dating back 10 years or so.

‘‘It would be exciting to play under him.

‘‘If he does come, he will bring Andrew Clark with him. What they did at the Mariners with their fitness, especially the senior players, I reckon they could have a really positive influence on me.’’

Griffiths and Carney joined the Jets in the January transfer window.

Neither had played in four months and were only hitting stride when the Jets were bundled out in the final round.

Griffiths, 34, scored three goals in eight games. Carney didn’t hit the target in his seven appearances but was a threat and provided a handful of assists.

‘‘I felt like David Carney and I were just getting started,’’ Griffiths said. ‘‘It’s frustrating that we didn’t get a sniff in the finals.

‘‘The way we were playing and the chances we created as a team, I thought we were on the same level if not above some of the top four.

‘‘But that’s is the way it is. Hopefully I’m here next season and we prepare as best possible.’’

Griffiths has been approached by two other A-League clubs but has put them on hold until the Jets finalise their coaching staff.

‘‘I’ve had a couple of coaches ring asking about my plans for next year,’’ he said. ‘‘It was a bit of a surprise. At the age of 34, you don’t expect too many options. My body feels good, and I’m still keen. I want to give Newcastle every opportunity.

‘‘I have sat down with [CEO] Robbie Middleby. They have a budget and I would probably be taking less money.

‘‘First things first, they have to find a coach. Once that is done we will have a fair-dinkum chat.’’

He was disappointed this season’s support staff were shown the door but said it was ‘‘the nature of the beast’’.

‘‘You don’t want to see anyone lose their job. Deansy, especially. I was with him for a few years when we won the title.’’

Michael Bridges joined the Jets coaching staff mid-campaign and is likely to work with the youth team next season.

Yes!!!

Great news. Here's hoping he has a great season and puts all the doubters in their place.

This is one for those who say there is no loyalty in football. Sure, it plays no real part for most players but there is something special when a player's career intertwines with a club and its fans. For whatever reason, Joel has been a Newcastle boy through most of his career. It would have been a shame if he couldn't have re-established his place in club history.

It is great that he has signed on again.

Only thing mentioned in the article about Carney is:
Griffiths is hoping that fellow late-season recruit David Carney also re-signs, explaining: “I just think he’d be a really good asset to have once he’s really fit. The boss has obviously got his work cut out here."

The best thing about @NewcastleJetsFC re-signing Joel Griffiths is that the media gets another season of hilarious & off the cuff quotes!

Some Joel Griffiths gold from this arvo's presser: when asked about Marquees, he suggests Messi, says he may be 'just' out of reach.
Joel Griffiths joked that his bro Adam is a 'panel beater stealing a living over in Malaysia'
and my final highlight of the @NewcastleJetsFC Joel Griffiths presser would have to be when he dropped the word 'tosser'

I don't have any particular issues with Joel being captain. What's going to stop it happening is the role Stubbins sees him playing.

How is he going to fit in with Montano, Neumann, Carney and Flores? Is Joel going to be played as an impact off the bench?

This would be the barrier I can see.

The good decisions keep coming from the Jets and Stubbins. Reckon the next step is to get one of the younger players with a half decent head on his shoulders and longer term future at the Jets as his Vice Captain. While Jaliens is the logical his age and his penchant for the odd yellow card means a fall back and future plan is pretty important.

Regardless of what others may think, I doubt Griffiths was ever in the frame. Too high-risk and Stubby has not come over as a dummy so far. Jaliens seems to possess the tactical nous to lead on the field and was probably the most logical pick for the 'right-now.' That said, I agree with CA's observations as regards the longer-term. Yes, it's early days, but given Stubby's performance to date, I can't see any evidence of the myopic, short-term vision that has plagued us in the past. I'll keep faith that Stubby is looking at the future, and not just the coming season, to make this club consistently competitive. Which is nothing more than what us long-suffering, faithful members deserve.

Good onya G, warming up for the coming season. I'm doing a bit of a pre season in here, getting a few nibbles from the same ol, same ol's ! I agree, I don't think Griff was ever in the picture and common sense was always going to prevail.I don't mind the look of Stubby so far, it's all looking fairly good. The club has ever only had short term captains and they usually are shown the door and I don't see any youngsters being around long enough. Probably, a season at a time is all that we can really look ahead to and with Kew at the helm, I don't think you would get too many that would disagree with that. Enjoy the season G and let's hope it's a good one.

AS a receptionist, Joel Griffiths makes a hell of a striker.

The evergreen Jets No.9 and 2008 Johnny Warren Medal winner has taken the first step towards life after football.

Griffiths, wife Bianca and childhood friend Jeff Sawtell have opened an Aussie Home Loans franchise at The Junction.

Though prepared to be the face of the business and man the front desk when available, Griffiths’ main focus is the Jets.

And top of the list is making amends for an ‘‘unacceptable’’ 4-1 capitulation to Wellington Phoenix.

‘‘We were pumped by Wellington Phoenix in all aspects,’’ Griffiths said.

‘‘Everyone is to blame.

‘‘I’m pretty sure the 11 players who started and even the ones who came off the bench would say they could have done more, whether through their actions on the field or something they could have said in the dressing sheds.

‘‘We weren’t compact enough and played as individuals rather than a team.

‘‘The fans have every right to get on our backs. That was unacceptable. That is not the way Newcastle fight for their jersey. Every player would be thinking the same.’’
Despite the inept display across the ditch, Griffiths believes it is not all gloom and doom.

‘‘Everyone is predicting us to get the wooden spoon,’’ Griffiths said. ‘‘That’s the challenge for us – to prove people wrong.

‘‘Yes, we have a lot to work on, but it’s only the third game.

‘‘The first two games, especially, we showed that we can compete.

‘‘I spoke to [former Jet] Andrew Durante after the Phoenix game.

‘‘When they lost to Perth in the opening game – they had ended the pre-season with a four-game losing streak – he was thinking, ‘I’m over this. I don’t know what to do. I am out of answers.’ He didn’t want out of the club, but he was down in the dumps.

‘‘Then they beat Central Coast 2-1 and pumped us.

‘‘All of a sudden he is on top of the world.

‘‘They are sitting fourth and he feels like his team are in contention.

‘‘That is what it takes. A couple of wins, a couple of things to go your way, a bit of self-belief, and all of a sudden you are back in it.

‘‘That is the good thing in sport: you always have next week to make amends.’’

Next for the Jets is a trip to Perth, where their lone A-League win was a 1-0 triumph in the inaugural season, nine years ago.

Before meeting the Jets on Saturday, the Glory host Melbourne Victory in a quarter-final of the FFA Cup at nib Stadium on Wednesday.

Although the west has been a graveyard for the Jets, Griffiths has fared well, scoring four goals in seven visits.

‘‘It is a tough place to play, but I enjoy it,’’ he said.

‘‘The main thing is we have to be a team against Perth, otherwise we will cop the same result.’’

Griffiths opened his season account with a header against the Phoenix.

‘‘I know I’m 35, but my body feels good,’’ he said.

‘‘I’m not as quick as I used to be, but I still have an eye for goal.’’

After starting on the right wing, Griffiths was moved centrally when Jeronimo replaced Edson Montaño in the 54th minute and coach Phil Stubbins reverted to a 4-4-2 formation.

‘‘It is nice to get a goal,’’ Griffiths said. ‘‘In a situation like that you have to try and get something out of the game, some confidence.

‘‘I have played alongside Jeronimo before and it worked OK.

‘‘He is lacking confidence at the moment, but we all know what he can do from his Adelaide days.’’

Off contract, Griffiths intends to play on for at least another season. He is also a realist. ‘‘My body feels good, but I’m 35, and at the end of the day that is what people look at. That is the reason for opening the business.

‘‘ Initially Bianca will be doing most of the work. She is a licensed mortgage broker, has a couple of degrees and is multi-talented.

‘‘Days off I will devote to the business.

‘‘I will be learning off Bianca and our business partner, Jeff.’’

All could have been resovled by retaining Goodwin. That would have pushed Carney up and moved Hoole right

Yeah, the goal against Wellington after subs were made. Griff scored, pointed over at the bench in what seemed to be a "PLAY ME UP FRONT AND I SCORE GOALS, YOU ****ER" gesture.

Imagine if we had kept Goodwin? Carney left wing, Hoole right wing, griff in the middle. But no.

Was thinking more from the start of the game. Last year from memory it was Taggz up front with Griff on the right every time he started.

This year it has been Montano/Jeronimo up front and Griff on the right

Very much taking an active leadership role in the team.

Probably because the decision not to appoint him as captain is nothing but a ****ing disgrace and a classic example of the ineptitude of those who make the decisions at our club.

The bloke is a born leader who inspires people (look at the love we have for him)
Is the most respected player in the club (won us a comp singlehandedly/Scored winning goal in GF etc)
Tries his arse off (Even though last Friday was not his best night he was at least trying to get something going)
Actually looks like the only player who gives a **** about the fans and the shirt

Why in ****s name would you not have him as captain???

We talk about getting our players playing in their best position and getting our best XI on the park yet we need to address the issue of appointing the best bloke to lead us on the park
