when you consider that you career is over not long after your 30th birthday, $50k is quite shit

the only blokes who'd chose this as a career would have to have very few other options

50k is the minimum money for the blokes at the bottom end of a HAL squad.

The blokes higher up get more and then your good players do pretty well.

Add in the opportunity to travel overseas like Taggz and Beard and earn some serious coin if you do well.

Sure there are a lot of failures but those that do succeed can live quite comfortably. Those who do make a career out of being a HAL player ain't exactly eating 3 for $1 home brand noodles their career.

Sure there are plenty of jobs in the world paying more than 50k but to say these blokes are skint is wrong.

$50k a year is a pretty good deal for doing something you enjoy like playing football.
There is also no law saying former players can't get another career / job when their playing days are over either.
Very few people get to retire at 30 years of age regardless of their profession - I don't see why footballers should be any different.
Certain trades are short term as well given fatigue and injuries - but you don't see brickies and so on whining like most pro athletes about the short length of their careers.

pretty much every other job has better job security and longevity

you'd have to be utterly brilliant or an idiot incapable of a profession to try your luck as a professional footballer

So what I have been told they get $200pw during NYL (ffa regulated across the board) and $100pw during NPL but the outsiders get extra not sure how much I think $150 maybe $200 during NPL to offset living away from home. If they sit on the bench or play in ALeague they get an extra match payment of $550 or there about not sure of exact payment.

NEWCASTLE have stepped up their pursuit of Sydney striker Bernie Ibini, as the Sky Blues work through their efforts to squeeze a host of stars into the salary cap.

Ibini’s loan spell with Sydney from Chinese club Shanghai Dongya finishes at the end of the season and the Jets have made him one of their priority targets as coach Phil Stubbins continues a wholesale overhaul of his squad.

    Ibini scores stunner0:36
Though Ibini has a longstanding relationship with Sydney coach Graham Arnold, there remains uncertainty over what deal the Sky Blues can offer in the face of competing pay demands from the likes of Milos Dimitrijevic, Mickael Tavares and Jacques Faty.

It’s also unclear whether a loan fee would be payable for Ibini, who signed a three-year deal with Shanghai in June 2013 but was loaned back to the Mariners in January 2014, and then to Sydney later last year. Under new A-League rules, most loan fees are included in the salary cap, but both Sydney and the Jets are hopeful Shanghai will agree to release Ibini from the last year of his contract.

Though pay talks are ongoing with several players, Sydney’s focus this week is their semi-final with Adelaide on Saturday night, a place in the grand final awaiting the winner.

But it’s believed the Jets are ready to make Ibini a substantial offer as Stubbins looks to establish a first-choice forward line for next season.

Meanwhile Perth have emerged as a potential destination for defender Zac Anderson, who left the Mariners last week. Though a move up the F3 to the Jets remains a possibility, Stubbins already has Daniel Mullen and Nigel Boogaard signed for next year, while Sydney FC’s priority is to secure Jacques Faty for next season at the completion of his injury replacement contract.

Have heard he is being offered a Yoof contract i.e. The same one the rest of our yoof team is on ie $100 a week and match payments for HAL appearances

If true a ****ing disgrace from these clowns
Nick can play across the backline. Has been in our system for years. Has proven he is up to HAL level with his run of games this season. Is local. Can cross, which is extremely rare for a HAL player.

If he isn't worth a squad spot at minimum wage, I don't know what is.
    OK

Someone who can play anywhere across the field, can't cross and comes from Sydney

If Ibini is the answer the question must be "how can we drive away the few fans we have left".

Ibini would be the best Aust Marquee in the HAL if we signed him. A current Socceroo in his prime who isn't looking to play OS due to his family issues. Sign a decent central striker to play as a foil and it's a win win combination.

On the Cowburn situation it's an interesting gamble the Jets are taking. If no other club offers Nick a HAL deal then the Jets offer of a guaranteed deal the following season will be his best offer. And we get a handy backup outside the top 23.

Although Nick will be able to sign for any club during the NYL season. NYL contracts do not lock the player down from a pro deal.

I'd rather Bresciano or Holman as Australian Marquee to Ibini.

    Hell, I'd even rather Bulut.

^ actually, I'd love Bulut at our club. Even if we had to pay him Australian Marquee wages. The guy is a winner, and is an absolutely amazing player.

I don't see him being a realistic option, because I think he has his heart set on a European move, but man could he win us some games.

He doesn't fit into Phil's yes-men philosophy though.
    OK

Bresciano and Holman....sigh...why not Viduka or H is still available I hear.

Both would be expensive geriatric failures and just the type of marquee we usually sign.

Of the younger Socceroos, Jimmy Holland or Tagz would be better but I highly doubt either would consider returning to the HAL. Maybe Bozanic might consider a return.

Of players already here Franjic is an option and Mooy is locked down already. Ibini is a realistic option who is available, and a good player to boot, in a position we need to fill.
